2.50 has some problems especially with mail. If they don't bother you stay on
it for now. The codebase is at least newer than 2.48. 2.51 is the same.

Thanks, Ray

I have had no problems with 2.50, all of Adrian's versions have worked fine.

Keep as many versions of SM on the HDD as you would like to try. Use
the same profiles for each. When there is a version you no longer
want, delete. Never get rid of something that works until you like
the replacement better - including OSs.

Starting SM empties profile data files

2017-08-04 Thread Ray Davison

HP Pavilion dv7

The as-shipped plus updates W7 home is on one partition.
W7U is on another partition.

The following SMs are on an apps partition. I started using 2.50 a few
months ago. I just got 2.48 and am using it now.

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/49.0 SeaMonkey/2.46

Build identifier: 20161213183751

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48

Build identifier: 20170707010522

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:53.0)
Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0 SeaMonkey/2.50

Build identifier: 20170424091539

The profiles are on a data partition. Mail is in a separate tree on the
same data partition as the profiles.

OSs, apps and data structure has been stable for a few years.

*

I mostly use the W7U partition. I took the machine on the road for
forty days, and all seemed OK. When I got home the first time I ran SM
2.50 under W7U there was no personal data. Prefs.js had been replaced
by three zero files numbered i,2,3, and one basic prefs.js file. Later
I noticed other data files were also empty.

I replaced the profile, booted W7 home, and everything was OK. I tried
all three of the above SM versions, and if I run any SM version under
W7U it trashes the data files.

I have had a file manager open and watched the files being changed. I
have a monitor that catches the activity, but most of the files are
changed before I can click block.

Whatever is causing this seems to only effect the profile, but is not
located in the profile, nor the app, because replacing those has no effect.

Ideas?

TY
Ray

PS: Things like this is a primary reason I have redundant OSs.

Nope. Just found out the OS X bug wasn't fixed for 52. TB took it into a
branch. We need to do the same or maybe use the branch from the next TB which
should be due soon.

There were some real problems in early 2.49 builds. The last ones got just
fixed last week. Browsing was usually fine but mail had it share of them. Look
at reports for early TB 52 versions. A lot of unhappy campers out there. Most
were caused by changes in mozilla code which tightened security or just
changed something... Thankfully the TB devs fixed the nasty ones so that we
can profit from their work.

I downgraded to 2.40 because it was the latest that I had already downloaded
and had saved. I must have done the 2.46 update automatically.
I see that the 1350152 bug is marked as resolved as of 11 hours ago.
I assume that means that I must wait for the next release beyond 2.48 for the
fix to be active? If so, I will download and manually reinstall 2.46 in the
meantime.

You can get some idea of the future from the minutes:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey/StatusMeetings/2017-07-23

For a while Seamonkey will be based on Firefox ESR which is currently
52. 52.8 will be hanging around in mid 2018.

The world could change by then.
