Running SM trashes it's data files

2017-09-01 Thread Ray Davison

HP Pavilion dv7

The as-shipped plus updates W7 home is on one partition.
W7U is on another partition.

The following SMs are on an apps partition. I started using 2.50 a few
months ago. I just got 2.48 and am using it now.

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/49.0 SeaMonkey/2.46

Build identifier: 20161213183751

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48

Build identifier: 20170707010522

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:53.0)
Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0 SeaMonkey/2.50

Build identifier: 20170424091539

The profiles are on a data partition. Mail is in a separate tree on the
same data partition as the profiles.

OSs, apps and data structure has been stable for a few years.

*

I mostly use the W7U partition. I took the machine on the road for
forty days, and all seemed OK. When I got home the first time I ran SM
2.50 under W7U there was no personal data. Prefs.js had been replaced
by three zero files numbered i,2,3, and one basic prefs.js file. Later
I noticed other data files were also empty.

I replaced the profile, booted W7 home, and everything was OK. I tried
all three of the above SM versions, and if I run any SM version under
W7U it trashes the data files.

I have had a file manager open and watched the files being changed. I
have a monitor that catches the activity, but most of the files are
changed before I can click block.

Whatever is causing this seems to only effect the profile, but is not
located in the profile, nor the app, because replacing those has no effect.

Ideas?

WFM - video and audio (in French).

That video works only with Safari for me. I tried with (old) Firefox,

Update: I can watch DM if I activate Flash, but HTML5 just
doesn't work for me.

My profile is pretty old and deviates a lot from the default,
so I probably have a setting or 12 that upset the HTML5 dance.

Dunno if it's worth investigating... all I've ever watched
on Dailymotion is the uncensored version of Blurred Lines
with Emily Ratajkowski strolling topless...

I haven't been able to use Dailymotion for several months.
I'm pretty sure they converted the site to HTML5 video,
but for me it seems to try to fall back to Flash, which
is disabled...

Trying to load a random video, I get these errors on the console:

Yes, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other
"founding fathers" owned slaves. However, they created
a nation. Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Thomas
"Stonewall" Jackson and other "heroes" of the
Confederacy tried to tear the nation apart. Statues
and other monuments to those "heroes" of the
Confederacy actually celebrate traitors and treason.

Are the popups the one telling you there are so many message to download
and offer you the choice of downloading them all or just a certain amount?

You could disable the "Ask me before downloading more than" setting in
the accounts Server Settings, or adjust it to a higher message count.

In folders pane of Mail & Newsgroup window right-click on root of
account and select "Settings..."

Server Settings >
[x] Automatically download new messages

You will also want to have checked:
[x] Check for new messages at startup
[x] Check for new messages every [10*] minutes

IIRC 10 minutes is the default, but you can change it to whatever you
are comfortable with.

I'll blame the rain, Edmund. :)

Perhaps we should all just learn Italian . . . .

Reading from News, I think I've seen one or two of the Italian spams in
the last week or so. I've got a filter rule in place for that stuff that
seems to be reasonably effective (including killing threads), although I
had to add one more new term. Logs indicate that there were 3 threads
killed on the 27th, and that's it.

I'm not sure what that all looks like for those reading from mailing list.

Smith

The only way that I've found to effectively filter out all of the spam
is to filter Google Groups. I filter it on news.mozilla.org so it
catches all groups - example:

[8/28/2017 4:44:27 PM] Applied filter "Injection-info: googlegroups.com"
to message from ORIANO...at 8/28/2017 3:30:13 PM ignored subthread

Unfortunately this also filters out a lot of valid posts, including some
developer posts from googlegroups, but that's ok with me.

Not okay with me. That's why I use snippets from the Subject Line.
