Hangouts

2020-01-02 Thread Francois LE COAT

Hi,

I have an iMac hosted with macOS Mojave, and SeaMonkey 2.49.5. I
have downloaded and installed the Hangouts plugin located at :

I would like to use Hangouts with SeaMonkey, but when I test it,
the plugin is locked ... I would like to know how to unlock it.
Hangouts is working with other navigators, but I would like to
use it in SeaMonkey. Is it working for someone else ? How ?

Thanks for any help.

Best regards,

Thanks for your advice I will test the browser. There's very few for SL.

Hi Francois,
The underlying Mozilla code that SeaMonkey uses no longer supports macOS
10.6.

Well, it "free sofware" ! Why wouldn't it happen under GNU/Linux ? I've
bought the worse computer on earth ? Only Apple is concerned ! I'm sad.

Perhaps you need a more recent version of Mac OS X ?

Recent versions of Mac OS X are not intended for my hardware. It would
be awfully slow. I won't upgrade my OS version. I would lose all my
work on this computer, the Rosetta virtual machine, only 64bits
versions etc. I'm not living on this planet ! Apple and Pears ...

I don't know how to unlock the Google Talk plugin. I searched in
"about:config" section without success. How to unlock this plugin?

I searched in the "about:addons" section and both "Google Talk Plugin"
and "Google Talk Plugin Video Renderer" v.5.38.6 are "always activated".
When I want to open a Hangouts window, SeaMonkey 2.40 tells me :

It is not supported on Seamonkey, only earlier versions of Firefox.
Also, Google stopped developing this plugin in 2015. It is abandoned.

Since Google Voice and Video / Hangouts is essentially integrated into
Chrome/Chromium, I'd suggest using Portable Chromium if you need that
functionality
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/osxportableapps/files/Chromium/).
Nothing to install, self contained and you can use it only when you need
it.

Thanks for these advices. Because Skype will no longer be supported
under Mac OS X Snow Leopard, I am searching an alternative to it.
Maybe Hangouts is not the best replacement for it. The best way to
use it except as a navigator plugin may be a standalone application.

I will investigate ...

What do you mean "2.35 version is unusable for me"? What problems did
you have with 2.35?

It's very hard to describe because English is not my mother-tongue.
With E-mail, when you want to login an account, there's no way
because the password box is reduced to 2 pixels height. When you
want to navigate, the backward and forward arrows are not active.
Etc. I passed the 2.35 version, and I don't want to see it anymore.

Someone under Mageia 5 described the same broken version in French :

<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/fr.comp.usenet.lecteurs-de-news/2WjiYhPXzxw>

That's very strange behavior under GNU/Linux is not the case with OS X.
I use SeaMonkey 2.35 under OS X without any problem. The broken version
maybe either caused by French version or depends on its integration to
KDE. Bad experiences happened for French, and under Kubuntu and Mageia.

I wish I'll never have such a broken version ...

Wow, he even tried with the version from SeaMonkey (translated from Google):

I waited for weeks to update to 2.33 Iceape
2.35. Today the 5 Mageia finally proposes, I hasten to comply and
is the cata: In the browser all my bookmarks are gone and
no way to reopen the windows and tabs from the previous session. In
messaging, can not enter the address of a recipient, the cursor
refuses to appear in the "To:" and "Subject" field is
reduced to the stub status. (About two pixels high).
I tried the version of Seamonkey 2.35 direct from at Mozilla,
installed in / opt: Idem.
To use my mail reader and news writing this
post, I had to reinstall the rpm of the 2.33 release. Phew, I had
hot, everything works again as before!
Someone else he has the same problem? How to solve it?
Thank you in advance for your advice, explanations and suggestions.

I've not had any such issues in Ubuntu 14.04 or 15.04. Perhaps a
language pack issue? Do you have a language pack installed? If so, can
you please try just running directly and without a language pack?

Yes. That was caused by the language pack version. I had to restart in
safe mode, install the latest version of the language pack, and then
restart. I now use SeaMonkey 2.35 under Kubuntu 14.04 LTS successfully.

SeaMonkey 2.29 is a bad update, that I have to cancel back to 2.26.

I hope you're understanding ? There's a problem with the parser :-(

The problem is your profile, not your SM.

Please notice that I use SeaMonkey 2.26, with two different machines,
a Vaio and Macintosh, with two different OSes, Kubuntu 14.04 and
OS X 10.6.8, and two different profiles, and there's the same problem
with UTF-8 character encoding. The problem occurs with plain text
messages, but also when I receive HTML formated messages.

If I set View-Character Encoding to Unicode it displays correctly.

The problem must be somewhere in the default configuration of SM,
or a bug detecting the UTF-8 character encoding.

I always have problems with UTF-8 character encoding. Is there something
else I can do ?

Yes. Start your SM in safe mode. Easiest way to this is by choosing
'Restart with Add-ons Disabled' from the top Help menu. Or you could
start SM with the parameter -safe-mode. Then press 'Continue in Safe
Mode' without checking any of the boxes.

That sounds very radical. I'm afraid I could corrupt my data.

Is there somebody else using accentuated languages ?

Not here, but i am using umlauts. ;)

Ho, yes ! I always use ccdile because my name contains this character =)

Yes. Hartmut Figge helped a lot to find out what was wrong with
character encoding. Now posts on the Usenet are correctly
displayed, and a lot of messages in my email inbox also.

I always had to correct accentuation when I replied to messages.

Why was it set to True?

It is a default configuration of SeaMonkey 2.26. I never had
to modify the default configuration before that. That was
causing big troubles reading every days messages, indeed.

Many thanks for your patience. That helped a lot using SeaMonkey.

Fwd: Character encoding since v.2.26

2014-07-04 Thread Francois LE COAT

Hi,

Francois LE COAT writes :
I've used successively Mosaic, Netscape, Mozilla then SeaMonkey
for exactly 20 years on the Usenet today. I never had to complain,
since SeaMonkey 2.26 appeared ... Well, the character encoding
is working or not, you never can tell ... Sometimes accents
in French are correct, sometimes they're not, randomly. I understood
that a bug was supposed to be fixed with SeaMonkey 2.26 version. But
in facts, character encoding is not working correctly whatever type
of message you're sending, via SMTP, NNTP etc.

Is this a known issue ? That's rather embarrassing, really.

In facts, the problem that still persists with SeaMonkey 2.26.1
with the French accentuation, is a problem with the UTF-8 encoding.

I can't read or reply to messages that use the UTF-8 character
encoding. It doesn't depend on the host system under which SeaMonkey
is installed, because I had to face the same problem with OS X 10.6.8
and Kubuntu Linux 14.04, with SeaMonkey 2.26.1. I adopted the
ISO-8859-15 character encoding, because UTF-8 has a visible bug.

That's a major problem, because UTF-8 is set by default with SeaMonkey.

I've never had the problem you describe, so I wonder if it's a pref you
set in your profile. What happens if you create a fresh profile?

I don't want to lose my messages, creating a profile. I'm not expert.
Anyway, I'm using SeaMonkey 2.26.1 with two different operating systems.

On my systems, Unicode just works. Period.

The problem with UTF-8 encoding happens when you talk in French forums.
Because I register to some newsgroups on the Usenet, I frequently
have the problem with users adopting the UTF-8 character encoding,
and using accentuation. Of course it is not a problem here. Every
accent is badly displayed with 2 unreadable characters, in the message,
and when I reply to the corresponding message, I have to rewrite it.

This happen since the following bug was corrected :

Fixes in Beta 1
The en-US locale now defaults to UTF-8 for outgoing emails (bug 941545).

at http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.26/changes

It happens on the Usenet, but also when receiving or sending emails
with a SMTP server, whatever host system I use (OS X, Linux ...)

I don't know if it's a known issue, but it is embarrassing for foreign
users of SeaMonkey like me, using accentuated languages.

I will write some chars with accents é Ú ê and try to send this message
as utf-8 via Options-Character Encodings. Not sure about the success
though because of recent changes to SM.

Examples can be very useful. Do you see the problem in the first line of

You wrote I will write some chars with accents ... And 3 separated

Hi,

Hartmut Figge writes:

Hrm. I have to guess from my half forgotten knowledge of Latin. *g*
Occidental should correspond to Western. You should have selected
Unicode. Assuming Unicode means also Unicode in French. :)

That's right. I can select Unicode in French in this box.

But that doesn't matter anymore. Dennis was more attentive than me and
has pointed to the solution. I am assuming now that you also see the
unreadable chars in this way:
http://www.triffids.de/pub/screenshot/sm140705-3.png

That's true. That's what I'm reading.

I hadn't noticed that before Dennis mentioned it. It looked like utf-8
displayed as iso-8859-x. You can verify by yourself. Select my message
with the unreadable chars, go to View-Character Encoding and choose
unicode. The result should be readable chars.

Setting View-Character Encoding to Unicode displays it correctly.

Repeat that with your
reply to my message and the chars should also be ok.

That's correct. Unicode is already checked, but when I select it twice
the characters are then correctly displayed. But in this case the ç
character from my signature (François LE COAT) appears as a unique
unreadable character (a sort of diamond with a question-mark).

You have made a selection to force SM to ignore the charset of a message
and to use iso-8859-15 instead. Where? There is a problem.

I don't know myself.

The handling for chars was changed recently for SM in Trunk and there
are still bugs. I am hesitating to use an older SM and am hoping, you
can find the selection yourself. :-D

Well, but it is not easy reading messages, and select View-Character
Encoding-Unicode for every message ? You suggested me to select

Unicode, that is a synonymous variant of UTF-8, though my encoding
character is ISO-8859-15. Isn't there an incoherency ? I'm confused.

The situation hasn't be so complicated since I installed SM 2.26 =(
