Re: Newsreader and blank messages

2010-05-12 Thread BevHoward
I have a similar problem which I assume is due to the same bug...

I use the Mozilla Threads with Unread option and can't live without
it. When this happens (a message is lost during download) the message
pointer for the missing message is apparently retained in the overall
message data location (where ever that is)

Since the missing message can't be seen, it cannot be read, marked as
read, deleted, etc, it remains as an unread message as far as the
newsreader is concerned, so the thread it was associated with will
always display when Threads with Unread is used.

I've tried everything I can think of, _including_ unsubscribing then
resubscribing and even deleting the newsgroups folder to no avail

 Advance-Cache-Clear Cache

Unfortunately, did not work,
Beverly Howard

Re: Newsreader and blank messages

2010-05-12 Thread BevHoward
update... since this is a newer version of Seamonkey, I closed
seamonkey, then went to the news folder under the profile, deleted the
newsgroups msf file in the news folder and deleted the folder for the
newsgroup.

While the newsgroup was retained, I had to go back in and re-subscribe
to the sections I participated in and re-download, the thread finally
stopped displaying when Threads with Unread was set.

Alex, it's not just you. Me, too! I've tried Reply but nothing shows

Yes, I hadn't tried that but I get the same response when I do.

It is as if there is no code that says NNTP body retrieval failed :
alert user.

Aplogies, I deliberately left the top post for the newsgroup, although
clearly I won't be looking at the post!

Just as well you did post to the group, because my email address is
mugged, so I haven't got your email yet!!

And don't worry about it now, better to be dealing with this problem on

I looked for a bug report before I originally posted, but couldn't find it :(
Good catch, and thank you dominique.

Do you think maybe it is really three bugs?

1. The reproducible behaviour the original bug reporter showed.

2. The not so reproducible behaviour when the connectivity is just so bad that
NNTP doesn't work, but SM/TB does not tell the user.

3. The failure to repopulate when the cache is empty after something (1. or 2.)
has gone wrong?

Strikes me, something tricks SM/TB into thinking it has received the
message, but in fact it has received a blank message, so it's not a
connectivity thing (2) and if it (SM/TB) believes it has received a
valid message, why should it try to repopulate (3)??

Your number 1's the problem.

IMHO, of course.

I see this bug all the time. it happens at least once a day. Mark it as
unread. The shut down SeaMonkey and restart and you ca read message

Also note in some cases rather than being highlighted. the item is
outlined in a rectangle (the subject). SM 1 never ever did this. SM2
since inception always had.

Someone need to post a Bug about it in SM Bugzilla even if it Duplicates
one in Thunderbird.

I've just read the bug commented on it and voted for it to be fixed.
In Comments I noted it applies to SM as well as TB and for me its a
daily occurrence. At least one Message is affected each day, and there
is no certain News Server. and in my case a sure sign that that it will
show as empty, it that instead of being fully highlighted will show as
an outline around the subject (header info).

Note: this was not added;but, I read messages from Mozilla,
secnews.Netscape, Annexcafe, msnews.com, and eternal September. and it
happens in all of them.

its never on the same server and randomly happens between the servers.

Oh, this was added to comment in Bugzilla. This never happen in SM1, and
has always happened in SM2 since day one.

shut down SM the open and go back to the message.

Newsreader and blank messages

2010-04-28 Thread Alex Strickland

Hi

I'm using version 2.0.4.

When I click on a newsgroup the number of new posts is retrieved, they show the
subject, dates, number of lines etc. When I click on a message, it briefly shows
Connecting to xxx, Connected to xxx and Loading Message... and then a
blank message is displayed.

I have tried flagging the message and the retrieving flagged messages, same
deal.

I deleted all the .msf files, with no change.

I then deleted *all* the files and directories under:

C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\k9xxylit.default\News

and set up new accounts and resubscribed, with no change. I am trying with three
different news servers, so I can't blame the server.

This is not a new install or anything, and seemed fine last week. I have had
this problem very intermittently before but generally simply clicking on the
message again got it back, but now, nothing.

*Sometimes* I try Print Preview and the message detail appears in the print
preview!

I am not set up for offline reading.

Any ideas (besides installing Thunderbird)?

I know South Africa is having connectivity problems with a undersea cable being

get the summary info then? Clearly e-mail works.
