It's curious, yes.

I don't follow the security bulletins very closely, but it's entirely
possible that a new security issue (affecting Java 7 update 51
inclusive) has come to light recently.

If this has in fact happened, Mozilla is right in listing J7u51 as
vulnerable. But where the page fail is in suggesting there is an
update when Oracle has not released one yet.

The problem is that the plugincheck page apparently has only two states
for known plugins -- up to date and vulnerable. It does not have the
ability to list a plugin as vulnerable, no update available, best
remedy is to disable the plugin. Perhaps it should.

I wonder why it lists several fairly common plugins, such as Google
Update, Google Talk Video Renderer and Microsoft Office as unknown.
One would think that by now someone would have figured who is supplying
those. Perhaps those plugins simply don't offer a convenient way to
check versions

I noticed it lists WCX plugin as unknown and says it is a Chrome
browser extension. That had me scratching my head for a bit as I don't
have Chrome browser and what is a Chrome extension doing in my Fx
plugins list? I had forgotten that when I recently updated my used for
many years WordWeb program that the new version installed this Chrome
extension seen in the Windows 8 registry as a Chrome browser extension
(even though I don't have Chrome browser) but seen in Fx as an unknown
plugin.

No I hadn't, since the Java site didn't say anything about a major

uses daily with heavy Java--updates have broken the games on more than

I'm not sure I want Java 8.

I put two Web sites in Java's whitelist. With Java 7, however, I
nevertheless have the annoyance that those Web sites still require
manual OKs to run unsigned Java applications.

Supposedly, those applications will be blocked with Java 8 without any
option to run the applications. These are two Web sites that are
apparently no longer being updated, both of which have unsigned Java
applications.

I read a thread in the Mozilla forum at dslreports.com where the OP
stated that he had used Mozilla's plugin check for his Firefox 27 and he
was puzzled because it said his Java 7 update 51 was outdated. He was
told by others that Java 8 was available and so that must be why Mozilla
was reporting his version as outdated. I was puzzled because
Tools/addons/plugins isn't blocking the version I have so I clicked on
check for updates and there was Mozilla saying I have outdated Java
just like the OP was told.
