That's a lot of effort. Unless you have reason to believe system
corruption, you can get the same effect by using the Profile Manager to
set up a new profile.

Getting a list of preferences from the provider isn't a bad thing,
especially if there's any possibility that they've made changes. One
easy place to trip up can be the methodology of user ID on the server
side. It's common that mail servers use email address as the user ID,
but it's not universal, and if the server uses a different ID, that can
be harder to figure out.

The one twist that I've found is that some providers are doing more
things with 2-factor authentication. I found that with my provider,
when I set up a mail client on my phone, and I couldn't authenticate.
It turns out that there is a different password that is used for
POP/IMAP/SMTP than the normal password.

In that setup, I can use my normal password if I'm accessing via a web
client, but if I've configured a new account in an offline client, I
have to use the alternate password. The thing that confused me is that
it looks like my account has been grandfathered, where I have not have
to reconfigure any existing connections. Among other things, I do have
my POP and IMAP settings (but not SMTP) set not to save passwords, where
I have to enter the password once per session (to ensure frequent-enough
usage that I don't forget a fairly long password), and I use the
password that I know. The alternate password is randomly-generated, and
I have no idea of what that is. Additionally, when I changed the
user-facing password, that's still the password that I enter when
prompted, and it's still the password that I use for SMTP.

From further discussion up-thread, I do see mention of use of ports 110
or 995 for POP. Even if you've used 110 forever, SSL connections are
getting to be very common, and it's not impossible that your provider is
requiring use of SSL and port 995. If that's the case, then for port
995, you generally want to set Connection Security to use SSL/TLS and
Authentication method to "Normal Password". The same applies for
outbound mail on port 465 or 587 (depending on which the provider uses).
Although there's other methods for encrypting credentials exchange, if
you have SSL active, the connection is encrypted, and there's no need to
encrypt transmission of the password -- and any setting other than
"normal" will cause the server to not see a valid password.

Close and restart SeaMonkey.
Attempt to get email for that account.

I tested this with my Verizon email account and it only asked for my

It could be that the port, connection security or authentication method
need to be updated in SeaMonkey's account settings (Edit > Mail &
Newsgroups Account Settings > [Account Name] > Server Settings).

Although you may not have changed anything in SeaMonkey, mail providers
sometimes change what they require.  It might not be a recently
announced change either, if they brought in new settings some time ago,
but still supported the old method until recently.  Most providers give
the details needed somewhere on their support pages.

Also, as others have mentioned, check that the username is definitely in
the right format - depending on the provider, sometimes it needs to be
the whole email address, sometimes only the part before the "@" (I even
once had an account which needed the whole address but with "@" replaced
with "#"!)  Again, providers sometimes change what they expect, so worth
checking even if it's previously been working.

I was thinking along those lines. I'm setting up another physical

Tools-Data Manager -> Passwords only in Listbox. Click on the mail domain and
you should see a url starting with e.g. imap smtp news and a username as your
mail address. Remove it and you password should be gone. Close and reopen
SeaMonkey to be sure this is picked up.

Nrute force is to remove logins.json when SeaMonkey is closed but that will
kill all saved passwords.

Many ISP are changing to imap.

When I contacted them by phone I mentioned that I was served by their
POP server. They are a local company and I've been a customer for three
decades since they were a storefront in a strip mall.

In any case I need to know how to locally change the password it sends
to the server.

I think the way to go is to try and retrieve your emails using the
old password.

It will fail, and ask you for the new password.
I think it should then ask you if you want to replace the old with
the new (in Seamonkey).

You can't do it directly in the Password Manager.

That is what I expected to happen.
It *DID NOT*
When I select the account name and then click "Get Msgs" the response
is:

Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server ** responded:
Invalid format for plain response.

Since the last time I used the account [less than 1 hour earlier
today], *nothing* has changed on my end.

My connection sees the other end as a Pop Server using Port 110.
and the password being sent insecurely.

110?  Did your Mail provider tell you that the value had changed?
Mine are all Connection Security = SSL/TLS  which maps to Port 995.

I've been on Port 110 for years (decades even ;)
I had updated password on one account and at next login got the reported
error message.
Immediately before telephoning my provider, I had checked email on a
secondary account with no problem. While speaking to the tech about the
1st account, I had her reset the password on the secondary account.
After I hung up, the secondary account gives the identical error message.

There must be a method to change SeaMonkey's copy of the password.
I *DID DO* it LAST year. Just don't remember how.

Pop3 on port 110 is the older of the two popular protocols used to
retrieve eMail from remote mail servers. (The newer protocol, imap, the
Internet message access protocol, uses port 143.)

I see nothing on that page mentioning changing *EMAIL* passwords.
I'm connected to a Pop Server, *NOT* a web page.
