I typically bcc myself and so I see replies and messages I have sent.
Lately, SeaMonkey seems to be inserting random punctuation or
graphics, sometimes where I had entered spaces.  For example, I typed
this correctly, but this is what appeared in the copy I sent to myself:

No.?? They went up to $100 per, effective -- I believe -- January 1.??

Another example:

?? I am sorry that when I wrote the email the other day about the
cost of PHV, I did not realize that the PHV fee had been doubled, I
suppose effective as of January 1.?? I still think the money is worth
spending rather than having issues at deposition or later for not
having gotten admitted.

Any ideas what to do about this would be largely appreciated.  It's
getting embarrassing.

You've said in another reply the problem persists with previous 2.48 as
with latest 2.49 versions as well.  It could very well be a problem
specific to your SeaMonkey profile settings – you may try reproducing it
with a new clean profile, for example.

In the mean time could you have a look at your SeaMonkey settings:

Preferences / Mail & Newsgroups / Text Encoding

and the "Default Text Encoding" in the "Server Settings" for specific
Mail/News accounts – if you have changed any of the defaults it might
lead to such unexpected results.

Have a look at specific Mail/News folder Properties (right-click a
folder), also:

     Fallback Text Encoding: [_]

[ ] Apply encoding to all messages in the folder (individual
message text encoding settings and auto-detection will be ignored)

Also, have a look at the page:

mailnews.force_charset_override false

If you have it changed it to |true| instead – it would cause problems
for sure.

Don't know why you are still using smtp.att.yahoo.com Just my 2 cents. However,

Because no one ever told me that. And I don't know either.

Also POP3 is incoming.att.net It was covered here:

Interesting. Nope, nobody notified me, and all the old settings are still working.
Frank-Rainer Grahl's suggestion worked today with the smpte server. It was a SM
configuration problem.

The problem occurs in both current TB and SM.  But ONLY if I send through the

So I'll be using 2.48 at least until 2.49.3 arrives. This is sad!

I just tried to reinstall 2.48, but the problem persisted for me.

I am still on 2.48, and had to add gmail outgoing smtp info and delete the
outbound.att.net. Google sent me messages that (1) someone tried to access and
I got an error message and to allow access to less secure apps and then when I
allowed it (2) got another message that access for less secure apps has been
turned on and telling me it will be easier to break into my account and I could
undo the change and switch to apps made by google such as Gmail. I am going to
try to go back to 2.49.2 and see if they get over the insecurity issue, but
regardless, it got rid of the random punctuation!! Thanks to everyone and
let's hope that 2.49.3 resolves the issue.

If you get a gmail warning for something you've just done intentionally, it's
generally okay to just say yes and let it pass.

Frank-Rainer Grahl's suggestion to go to about:config and toggle mail.strictly_mime
to true in 2.49.2 does seem to work with the spurious characters and I can also
switch between smtpe servers and have it stick. I'm also reading in this thread that
yahoo may have just changed its settings. So I don't actually know... :P

I will try going back to 2.48. I had the problem using 2.49.1 and hoped 2.49.2
would fix it, but evidently not. I am not sure about changing servers as I am
concerned it will mess up my phone and tablet email, but I am willing to try to
live with 2.48 for now.

I don't really know how to do bug reporting. Beyond my skill set, I am afraid.

Re: Strange punctuation randomly inserted in email

2018-02-22 Thread cmcadams
Thunderbird menus (as in the link) are different from SM, but I solved the problem of
switching to smtp.gmail.com in 2.49.2 by the expedient of deleting smtp.att.yahoo.com.

2.49.2 doesn't seem to like being required to use multiple smtp servers, any more
than switching default search engines.

As an experiment I reinstalled SM 2.48. End of problems. 2.48 has no problem sending
through gmail's smtp without needing to delete anything. Or with sending through
Yahoo's smtp without producing spurious characters in the final result.

So I'll be using 2.48 at least until 2.49.3 arrives. This is sad!

The problem occurs in both current TB and SM. But ONLY if I send through the
ATT/Yahoo SMTP server. The issue does not appear if I use my hosting company
(Bluehost) server.

This is bad. The last time I went down this road it took MONTHS for them to

Change the SMTP server for the email account itself. It may be set to
use a specific server instead of the default.

Perhaps the problem is because both mail/clients did not use the same

Yes to both, so we shall see. No obvious category for the email component, so
categorized under General.

Bingo! I was getting this last night sending quotes from a story on the BBC website
in an HTML email. In my case single quotes "'" and double quotes '"' and hyphens
"-" were also being converted to multiple question marks in both the Yahoo and
Gmail web browsers.

I reverted to SM 2.49.1 to see if the problem was solely with 2.49.2, but it
wasn't. The problem also occurred when sending from 2.49.1.

My best thought was that BBC was intentionally using nonstandard 'lookalike'
characters, to make copying more difficult, with characters from non-English
character sets that the online browsers couldn't deal with.

Happened to me today as well.  Looks like it's every time I double-space
after a period (not breaking that habit).  This is a note I just sent to
myself:

Something similar Happened a while back to a post that I made. I am in
the habit of using two spaces after a full stop (period) before a new
sentence. I don't remember who it was, but someone asked why I was
putting, I think, x'0A32' before the new sentence. IIRC, we never did
figure out what was going on but either the first or second space
somehow got changed to a non-standard character. All of the sentences
in this message (except the first, of course) are preceded by two spaces
like here without the full stop (period). This is written with the
latest, just downloaded and installed version of SeaMonkey, 2.49.2

Not happening with 2.49.1. But I have noted an annoying tendency to
eliminate the blank line after quoted material before my new text. I've
gotten in the habit of saving to Drafts to inspect before sending.
