It's getting embarrassing. You've said in another reply the problem persists with previous 2.48 as with latest 2.49 versions as well. It could very well be a problem specific to your SeaMonkey profile settings – you may try reproducing it with a new clean profile, for example. In the mean time could you have a look at your SeaMonkey settings: Preferences / Mail & Newsgroups / Text Encoding and the "Default Text Encoding" in the "Server Settings" for specific Mail/News accounts – if you have changed any of the defaults it might lead to such unexpected results. Google sent me messages that (1) someone tried to access and I got an error message and to allow access to less secure apps and then when I allowed it (2) got another message that access for less secure apps has been turned on and telling me it will be easier to break into my account and I could undo the change and switch to apps made by google such as Gmail. I am going to try to go back to 2.49.2 and see if they get over the insecurity issue, but regardless, it got rid of the random punctuation!! Thanks to everyone and let's hope that 2.49.3 resolves the issue. If you get a gmail warning for something you've just done intentionally, it's generally okay to just say yes and let it pass. Frank-Rainer Grahl's suggestion to go to about:config and toggle mail.strictly_mime to true in 2.49.2 does seem to work with the spurious characters and I can also switch between smtpe servers and have it stick. I'm also reading in this thread that yahoo may have just changed its settings. Currently this points to a yahoo mail server issue and not to a SeaMonkey or Thunderbird problem. Try setting mail.strictly_mime to true and see if it solves your problem. My best thought was that BBC was intentionally using nonstandard 'lookalike' characters, to make copying more difficult, with characters from non-English character sets that the online browsers couldn't deal with. This is a note I just sent to myself: This is followed by two spaces.?? This is followed by a single space. This is more text. Lem Johnson Something similar Happened a while back to a post that I made. I am in the habit of using two spaces after a full stop (period) before a new sentence. I don't remember who it was, but someone asked why I was putting, I think, x'0A32' before the new sentence. IIRC, we never did figure out what was going on but either the first or second space somehow got changed to a non-standard character. All of the sentences in this message (except the first, of course) are preceded by two spaces like here without the full stop (period).
