[Sursound] ChatGPT & Ambisonics

2023-01-22 Thread Courville, Daniel
What is Ambisonics?
Ambisonics is a technique of sound spatialization that uses multichannel
recordings to reproduce a three-dimensional sound image. It is often used in
films, video games, and virtual reality experiences to create an immersive
sound environment. It typically uses multiple speakers to reproduce sounds at
different locations in space to create a sense of real-world space and depth.
There are different Ambisonic formats, such as 3D Ambisonics.

What is the SoundField microphone?
The SoundField microphone is a type of microphone that uses multiple microphone
capsules to capture sound in different directions. It is often used in
Ambisonics to capture a full sphere of sound around the microphone, which can
then be used to create a 3D sound image. The microphone typically includes a
main microphone capsule, as well as several other capsules that are positioned
at different angles around the main capsule. These additional capsules capture
sound in different directions and create a more detailed and accurate sound
image. The SoundField microphone has been used in various applications such as
film and game audio production, music recording, VR audio and more.

Re: [Sursound] Sursound Digest, Vol 173, Issue 4

2023-01-16 Thread Courville, Daniel
Hi David,

I relayed the info to our students, hopefully they will submit something.

That being said, I’m a bit perplexed by the “6th order” specification. I don’t
know the details of the hardware and software involved in the Sonosfera, but I
would imagine that it should be able to playback and decode 3rd, 5th or 7th
order files.

Is it because it was determined that the Sonosfera number of speakers was ideal
for 6th order?

Thanks,

Daniel

Re: [Sursound] Ambisonic UHJ Stereo decoder to speaker feeds

2022-02-25 Thread Courville, Daniel
Maybe it's a question of terminology, but you need:

ATK UHJ *Encoder* (will convert UHJ to planar 1st order FuMa B-Format);
followed a B-Format decoder.

I have retired my Onkyo SV-909 receiver with a UHJ decoder after many years
of service. Over the years I have transferred my LP and CD surround recordings
decoded into multichannel flac files for playback on a computer based system. I
did manage to do a couple UHJ recordings using the Onkyo a while back but
wondered if their might be a computer based solution.

I am currently using Reaper as my DAW. I did a search for Ambsonic VST
plug-ins and found The Ambisonic Toolkit for Reaper. I played with that but
found that that The UHJ decoding it could do was from UHJ W,X,Y,Z to stereo and
what I am looking for is UHJ stereo to a speaker feed. I really do not need the
ability to adjust to different 4 channel layouts like the Onkyo provided and
could just live with a square.

I could be I simply missed something in the ATK as maybe a signal chain
that could provide the decoding I need to convert my old CD's and LP'sbut
thought why not see if the knowledge base here might be aware of a solution

Re: [Sursound] Reaper performance issues.

2021-10-19 Thread Courville, Daniel
Hi,

The problem is that you have, say, 30 mono audio files * 16 channels = 480
channels.

You could use IEM MultiEncoder and have the 30 mono audio files sent to a
30-channels aux bus (with the MultiEncoder on that bus) = 60 channels

That's the way I would do it.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to get an idea of your experiences with Reaper running large (ish)
ambisonic sessions.

I mostly work in 3rd order ambisonic and use the Blue Ripple plug-in suite
and Rapture 3D Advanced for decoding.

I?m decoding to a 25.2 channel speaker array and could have up to 40 odd
tracks, each with a 3rd order encoder/panner on.

When I reach about 30 tracks Reaper performs very badly - laggy response
when moving play head around, lots of clicks and pops when muting/soloing,
random clicks and pops when just playing the session. Sometimes if I need
to record arm a track playback is completely glitchy.

I understand that 30 odd tracks each with a 3rd order encoder, and decoding
to 27 channels is a lot to ask of the computer. BUT I?m using a 14 core
iMac Pro with 64gbs ram. The sessions are running off an external TB2 drive
(not SSD).

I?ve played around with buffer settings which don?t seem to make much
difference. Also the perf monitor in Reaper and the activity monitor in OSX
don?t show that much strain.

Any optimisation tips greatly appreciated. Or any other similar issues with
Reaper?

Cheers

[Sursound] Re : Zoom H3-VR anyone?

2018-11-18 Thread Courville, Daniel
Hi there,

Use the Zoom software for A to B-Format conversion.

Once in B-Format, the choices are numerous. For 1st order to binaural decoding,
there's Harpex, of course. https://harpex.net

But also have a look at the IEM plug-ins https://plugins.iem.at

And the AALTO SPARTA plug-ins http://research.spa.aalto.fi/projects/sparta_vsts/

Harpex and the binaural decoder in the SPARTA suite can load SOFA files. The
IEM suite will soon include a binaural decoder that can also load SOFA files.

Cheers,

Daniel

Le 18-11-18 12:00

The sound seems OK but the post-processing software from the Zoom
website is nothing to write home about. Essential features like level
control and normalising are lacking and I'm not too happy with the
conversion to Binaural.

So, if anyone has suggestions for better Mac ambisonics software or
plugins I'd love to hear from you.

Re: [Sursound] Rode NT-SF1 and Zylia ZM-1

2018-10-19 Thread Courville, Daniel
Hi,

First off, I didn’t have the opportunity to test neither the NT-SF1 nor the
ZM-1.

But, I would point that the NT-SF1, like other 1st order mics, can benefit from
spatial resolution upmixing/upsampling using plug-ins like Harpex or the NT-SF1
own « SoundField by RØDE ». According to this page
http://research.spa.aalto.fi/projects/sparta_vsts/plugins.html, there should be
an eventual upmixing plug-in in the SPARTA suite.

So, if one is really enamoured by the timbral qualities of a particular 1st
order mic, but needs the added spatial resolution, there’s a solution for that.

Cheers,

Daniel

[Sursound] Nuendo 8.3 update

2018-10-09 Thread Courville, Daniel
New in Steinberg Nuendo 8.3 regarding Ambisonics:

Panning audio in Ambisonics
Mono, stereo or surround channels can be routed to Ambisonics buses with the
new VST MultiPanner to position the audio in the Ambisonics sphere

Monitoring Ambisonics Audio
Nuendo 8.3 includes an VST AmbiDecoder plug-in. This decodes the Ambisonics mix
to an immersive HRTF-based binaural sound for headphones or to an immersive
sound speaker configuration. Besides being able to import an HTRF file
containing the information of individual head and ears shape, the AmbiDecoder
also offers YouTube and Facebook monitoring modes.

Re: [Sursound] realtime 5.1 streaming over hdmi ?

2018-03-08 Thread Courville, Daniel
A 2012 Mac mini will work fine. The screenshots I posted two days ago are from
a Mac mini with OS 10.12.6.

It's connected to Yamaha CX-A5100 and no tweaks were needed on the Yamaha for
the Mac to see it or to enable eight LPCM channels via HDMI.

Some apps, like VLC, can either send the audio to the Yamaha as LPCM (VLC
decodes the Dolby or DTS track) or as bitstream (the Yamaha will do the
decoding).

I also used TwistedWave, Reaper and Pro Tools connected to the Yamaha via HDMI.
That's in classroom/projection room. Very reliable.

Hi,

Just recently a number of companies seem to be offering basic ambisonic
plug-ins with a binaural decode for use in VR audio.

https://www.audioease.com/360/

https://www.waves.com/hardware/360-ambisonics-tools

https://www.gaudiolab.com/product/works

Obviously they are all aiming at the 3D video market.

All seem to offer the use of a head tracker.

The last seems to provide a way to prepare audio files for use in the Unity
games engine, like the TwoBigEars/Facebook Spatial Workstation.

https://facebook360.fb.com/spatial-workstation/

They will all work with ProTools HD, the last only with ProTools, and the
first two with Reaper. Not all alternative hosts would be suitable, though
Nuendo and Cubase should work.

The Waves version seems to work with their Nx Virtual Room plug-in,
originally offered as a way of monitoring mixes binaurally in a simulated
studio environment.

All seem to be first order ambisonics only. No loudspeaker decoders are
offered as yet.

It had to happen,

Re: [Sursound] Double MS to B-Format

2016-07-17 Thread Courville, Daniel
@ Billy Wirasnik: You can try my DMS to B-Format converter, part of this suite
of plug-ins http://www.radio.uqam.ca/ambisonic/b2x.html

Basically, the recipe is M Front + M Back gives you the W, M Front - M Back
gives the X and the S is the Y. There's some gain adjustments to be done on the
resulting WXY, but DMS and WXY are equivalent.

In your case, there's also the extra step of converting to ambiX which can be
done with the converter plug-in in this

Thanks. But I'm curious: any reason why you don't want to use the term
"B-Format" in HOA?

People working with HOA in the last ten years or so have kept the B-Format
moniker for the spherical harmonics stage in Ambisonics.

This looks great. My only concern is regarding terminology: you seem to use the
term "B-Format" only for 1st order (and I presume it's of the FuMa kind), and
you drop it for HOA.

So, on the GitHub page, we read:

• HOA_bf2acn: converts a B-format stream to an ACN/N3D HOA stream
• HOA_acn2bf: converts the first-order channels of a HOA stream to B-format

This could be confusing for ambisonic newbies, I think...

At the output of the H2n in "spatial audio" mode, it's B-Format, but ambiX
flavor. Put the Matthias Kronlachner B-Format converter before your usual
decoder (Surround Zone? Harpex-B?) and you're good to go.

The first Ambeo prototype used a Sennheiser e 945 grille: at its widest, that

A good bet for the capsules is the 14 mm Sennheiser KE 14-234 that's found in

It does work in Logic Pro X 10.2.2.

I selected "Quadraphonic" as the surround format for the LPX project and I
dragged a quad file in the audio track: without a quad file in the track, the
track will stay mono and the Ambi Head plug-in won't be available as an insert.

Every Pixar animation movies have panned dialogues.

Since the voices are recorded in individual booth, they start audio
post-production with separate tracks for every voices, making panning easier
and more effective, although making the mix more time consuming.

Interesting that in the video, the first word out of the Sennheiser
representative is "Ambisonics".

Maybe now AKG will reconsider making their Ambisonics mic with triangular
capsules...

[Sursound] Sennheiser Easy 3D Recording and Modeling

2016-01-06 Thread Courville, Daniel
« Sennheiser realizes that content is king and that for any new technology to
gain traction, it must be easy to develop in. Sennheiser is therefore looking
to help content creators take advantage of their 3D audio platform with
easy-to-use recording and modeling tools.

On the capture front, Sennheiser will feature a virtual-reality microphone.
Unlike traditional microphone designs, the new mic will capture high-quality
audio in four quadrants. Sennheiser says the mic was designed in coordination
with VR content producers. The VR mic is scheduled to launch in the third
quarter of 2016. In 2017, Sennheiser will ship a software plug-in that will be
bundled with the same mic for VR content post-production. »
