I wouldn’t call BVE a consumer show, really. It’s aimed at broadcast, film and
TV professionals and most of the gear on show is pretty high-end stuff. The
chap I was talking to was a fairly high-up exec, but obviously not fully clued
up on Ambisonics and at least he asked to be informed of what was available.

John

BVE is a consumer show (where ignorance is bliss)... The R team
probably knows a bit more about Ambisonics. If the microphone is good
and affordable, then it'll be fun to "hack", unless obscurantism
(as a common industrial design pattern) makes it too difficult.

Yes, and although the signals can fairly simply
be converted to A format, there is a perhaps a
difference in practical pick up and maybe this
configuration actually gives better Ambisonic
results than the SF mike. Unlike the SF mike, it
is completely "symmetrical" in the horizontal and vertical planes.

If that's the case, it looks like a copy of the SF Mike. How can the
article say: "This is the first VR Mic we've seen..." ?

Perhaps because it's written by someone very young and inexperienced?

Or perhaps because the lay person doesn't equate "VR" with "surround."

Another major element of the system is the hardware used to capture

hardware, including a line-array microphone comprised of 31 individual
capsules — the individual elements that capture sound — as well as a
little multi-capsule ambisonic directional mic (below) of which only a
few exist in the world right now.

If you look to the video: Is this a new form of (spherical array) HOA

Fair enough, I would say.

Luvly : "audio in four quadrants"
my latest composition has sea noises in three tridents,

at least 'three hundred and sixty degrees' sounds less (?)tautologous.

I fully agree! A "four quadrant mike" might sound impressing for some
"VR journalists" or cheerleaders, but not for us. This expression is
unclear, to say the least. (Could be a form of IRT Cross, or anything

Sennheiser/Neumann should abstain from any such PR speech, IMO. (They
don't have to cheat. :-D )
