RE: [biofuel] Question's
Martin, I mean increase the initial vinegar during the initial wash stage. I found that I got crme during wash. Much of it settled out but end result was lower BD yield. Increasing the acid/water ratio and lowering agitation helped to increase BD yield. Hope this helps. Mike -Original Message- From: Martin R. I mix for one hour also when working out the titration ,I was told that the PH should be between 8 and 9 is this correct ?? Most of my batches are around 8.3 to 8.7 PH the trouble that I had with the bubbles in my BD was with the PH of the mix being 8.35 PH and still got all the extra soap in my fuel . How low can you go on the PH scale for the oil mixture to react and form BD and what is the least amount of Methanol one can use , say in 100L. Many thanks Martin R. Re: [biofuel] Methanol recovery ???

If you use a vacuum pump, where do you get one , and how do you set it up how much can be recovered from the glycerine ,or can one recover the Methanol from the entire BD batch , after the BD has been formed ??? I make 22 liter batches using a mixture of about 25% methanol and 75% ethanol. All the methanol gets consumed, and some of the ethanol. Since I do a glycerine wash with added water (15% of oil), one batch gives a glycerine layer containing about 2.2 liters of glycerine, 3.3 liters of water, and 4 liters ethanol. I only bother to distill the glycerine layer -- no vacuum, just a fractionating column with reflux. The ethanol comes over with water, of course, about 90% cuz my still is not real efficient. I get about 2.5 liters of the excess ethanol back, which is worth about $3.30 counting my freight costs. My methanol is only $3.00 a gallon, and I probly wouldn't bother recovering it, but it would work even better, since it would come over anhydrous. Yahoo! [biofuel] Remember White smoke!
You may remember a while ago I posted a request for help on a problem with a ford transit spewing white smoke, after doing a clutch change and replacing main oil seals. You will be glad to know I now have it running again, however its not perfect. I have had to advance the timing (about 1.5 teeth on the toothed belt) So it runs but is a bit noisy and smokes a little (greyish). A mechanic friend of mine suggested that the pump (Lucas / Cav) might be over pumping hence the need to advance the timing so much. Could this be the case? If so, can anyone tell me how to turn down the pump, I've taken a look at the adjuster and it looks more complicated than a simple mixture adjustment screw on a petrol carb! This is only a temporary measure as I am getting this pump and another for a spare engine, rebuilt with Viton seals; which brings me to another question, can anyone give me the name of a company that can supply factory rebuild kits containing Viton seals who will export to the UK? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Malcolm Biofuel at Journey to Forever: http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel.html Please do NOT send unsubscribe messages to the list address. [biofuel] WVO Hazardous?
Hello, Just a few thoughts. Why is waste vegetable oil considered hazardous in some areas? As in how do some companies get away with charging restraints money to take away the waste vegetable oil but you and I can just throw out used cooking oil? If I convert my vehicle to run on waste vegetable oil will I have a hazardous substance in my vehicle? How do most of you get away with transporting it away from the restaurant? If I have waste vegetable oil on my property and the tank springs a leak do I have to have a hazardous team come in and clean it up? I am helping my dad convert is generating system to used cooking oil. He operates an outfitters camp in the remote north. His generator set runs 24 hours a day. Re: [biofuel] WVO Hazardous?
It isn't hazardous or dangerous. However, 5 gallons of it will make quite a mess, if spilled. So like any garbage, there are regulations for disposal. Most restaurants will give you a bit, and you can keep your collections under official radar. Re: [biofuel] WVO Hazardous?
Good questions Vegetable oil is a hydrocarbon oil, disposing of it in the quantities that restaurants use would be very bad for the sewers and septic systems. This is why it is hazardous. As far as having a hazardous substance in your car, would you cook french fries in gasoline? Probably not :) Having a tank on your property 'spring a leak' probably wouldn't happen with WVO, it's rather gelatin-like. If you leaked some out you could clean it up yourself, if you leaked 500 gallons out you probably couldn't clean it up yourself.
