This is why the use element establishes a new viewport. You decide how
big you want this particular use of the symbol to be. You can re-use the
same symbol multiple times at different sizes.

No, that would defeat the point of reusable symbols.

You just type the unicode characters for arabic and the
contextual shaping and ligature formation happens automatically. There is
no "code" to crack.

Well, there is: I still have it, for example, and it still runs and can
still be installed. It hasn't been updated in quite some time and is
unlikely to ever be updated, I agree. What difference were you trying to

Ronan made a good point that content developers should examine their
dependencies and avoid assumptions (eg sniffing specifically for ASV, or
using techniques that are specific to ASV extensions like the
right-click menu stuff, or taking advantage of looseness that ASV allows
for historical reasons (eg defaulting the SVG namespace).

But that is good advice in any case; content that looks specifically for
ASV will fail when someone accesses that content with any other of the
increasing number of SVG implementations.

Thanks for the positive statement, Jon. Now that the merger is finalized

You note there that Opera "plans to support CDF in a big way, which is
fantastic news.". It is, I agree; part of the point of SVG being in
XMLis that it can be used as a graphical namespace - something that knows
how to draw itself - in compound documents.

I put together a quick test, used in a recent CDF WG meeting; it serves
a compound document as a bogus unregistered media type,
application/foobar+xml with an unknown/unsniffable filename extension of
.foobar

Thus the only thing that is known about it, per RFC 3023, is that it is
in XML.

Opera 9 happily renders it, finding both the XHTML and SVG namespaces in
there.

Yes. This sample was presented as a test, not as good practice. A WICD

Like Flash-Lite did in version 1.1, where to get any traction in the

Its not clear that the Flash underlying engine is capable enough to do

I agree they are a key aspect, and that there is a need for a good

I have been discouraging people from making ASV-specific content for
years. Some people just don't get it, presumably the same people that
make Win IE x.y-specific content.

I mentioned that animation and fonts are the two big issues that stick
out for me. However, having seen other static-only implementations add
scripting and then attempt to add declarative animation and then decide
a big rewrite is needed to get decent animation performance, I can
understand if developer builds take a while to get animation.

I agree there is no point sending in a bug like "there is no smil
animations support". They know, and there already is such a bug. Bug
reports on detailed areas are helpful though. For example I sent in some
in the beta phase (Deerpark 1 and onwards) on problems with gradients
(repeat and reflect on radial gradients,and problems with degenerate
gradients). The former turned out to be a GDI bug that does not affect
Cairo builds, and the latter they fixed; both were dealt with very
promptly.

Its a limitation of the Win IE plugin architecture - fragment
identifiers are stripped from the URI before sending to the server (this
is correct) and the fetched local copy of the content is given the
stripped, fragment-less URI instead of the real one (this is broken).

Its been reported since IE4 and has been promised to be fixed several

Right. It just has to make the linked-to object visible.

(Of course, it could have been implemented by ASV and Corel too, in
theory, but we wouldn't know because of the browser those are hosted
in).

Yes (this is something XML specifies, its not specific to SVG)

At the time we specified that, it seemed that XPointer would become the

happen.

If its not well formed it isn't XML. I agree that the majority of stuff

If its not valid, though, well, valid to what? As Michael

Its not a compression format, so a decompressor won't help you. But I

Its actually expanded data :) is base64 encoded. If you were to decode

Yes. But the other contenders seem to be non-open, single-vendor ones.

[svg-developers] FireFox native SVG, Hats Off!!!

2006-04-06 Thread Chris Peto
Hi All,

I have been recently working on a large project that must run in FireFox
native SVG and IE (ASV). And, I just wanted to say that FireFox native SVG
has come a long way and is really great to work with.

There may be some small quirks, but all-in-all, Hats off!!! To the
developers that have made it possible.

Keep up the great work!

Well, no. I'm sure there are system like that, with a small number of
op-codes like insert, delete, replace etc. REX is not one of them. its a
much more general system to transfer DOM 3 Events originating in one
tree, usually but not always to a copy of that tree stored somewhere
else.

If the events are mutation events then the effect of insertion and
deletion (or more generally, holding the second tree in synchronization
with the first) can be obtained.

And a particular reason to note that difference is that the France Telecom
patent is specific to a graphical scene representation and to a system with
four op-codes (amongst other specificities which make it unlikely that it is
essential to REX).

I therefore find your implementation interesting but your warning to be
premature.

Thanks for that, Paton. I think those are much more realistic timescales for

The background rendering time will consist of the svg rendering time, s,
plus the per-image copying or blitting time r, which is
proportional to width times height of the image, iw ih,multiplied by the
number of horizontal and vertical copies ch cv.

s + (r * iw * ih * ch * cv)

if you have a 10x10 svg image and your window is 1000 square, then you
will have 100 copies horizontally and vertically

s + (r * 10 * 10 * 100 * 100)
s + 1,000,000r

If you have a 500x500 svg image you will have two copies horizontally
and vertically

s + (r * 500 * 500 * 2 * 2)
s + 1,000,000r

You may well get some slow down with animated backgrounds, but then you
can currently go crazy with animated GIF backgrounds, too.

Hopefully nothing, per:

  Scalable Child Element, used as a background image, will not provide
  support for scripting and interaction, such as zooming, panning,
  linking and user interaction events.
  http://www.w3.org/2004/CDF/specs/CDR/wp-1/wicd.html#scalable-background-image

Right. An SVG used as a background image will not receive user interface
events.

if you need an interactive image behind HTML text, make it a foreground
image and use CSS positioning.

[svg-developers] SVG 1.1 test suite updated

2006-12-14 Thread Chris Lilley
Hello svg-developers,

The SVG Working Group is pleased to announce the release of an updated
SVG 1.1 Test Suite. This release has more tests - 275 test slides,
most with multiple subtests - and a particular focus on improving the
number of SVG Tiny 1.1 tests. Also new in this release is an HTML
'object' harness, as well as the legacy 'embed' harness.

I see Antoine covered some of these already so let me address this one.

Yes, the intention is to prevent anyone changing the tests and then
claiming that the changed test is still the W3C SVG test suite.

(As an example, a vendor who altered the tests so that they passed more
of them. )

Or, indeed, removing the W3C copyright notice and selling on the
modified test suite as their own.

(Thats also why each test slide includes the cvs revision number, so
we can check the test and the reference PMNG are from the exact same
version of the test).

Also, the tests themselves (the svg files) and the test harnesses
(html or svg files used to navigate between tests, display information
about the test, etc) have different licenses. The tests can't be
changed. the harnesses can be hacked around as you wish or discarded
and a different harness used. For example, an implementor might like a
harness that displays their current rendering from todays daily build,
the reference PNG, and a third PNG which is their rendering from the
last released build (to check for regressions in their code). Or,
someone might make a script that loads the tests one by one. Or
compares the result bit-by-bit with the last released rendering on the
same platform with the same fonts.

If someone wants to look at the source of the tests (well, we would
expect they would do that) or use the code as an example and modify it
to do something similar that they want to do - that's fine, as long as
the modified code does not claim to be a W3C SVG test suite test.

Note in passing that the way some of the tests are written is
non-obvious - they are designed to test a particular feature and in
some cases are deliberately fragile, giving multiple opportunities to
get the rendering wrong. Its the opposite of 'graceful degradation'.
So they are not necessarily good real-world examples.

That article is broadly correct, with the exception of:

  Unfortunately the SVG DTDs are a source of so many issues that the
  SVG WG has decided not to write one for the upcoming SVG 1.2
  standard.

The problems with DTDs are entirely unrelated to whether they are being
used to describe SVG or some other grammar. There is in general a
transition away from DTDs and towards W3C XML Schema (for data-like,
especially database-like XML) and RelaxNG (for document-like XML)
which gives greater expressive power for constraints, better typing,
can do namespaces without hacks or magic prefixes, and so on.

So its certainly true that for SVG 1.2 and on, startng with SVG Tiny
1.2, there is a RelaxNG schema and there is no DTD. Which means a
DOCTYPE is only needed if you want to declare your own entities in the
document.

For SVG 1.1, the important thing is to have namespace declarations in
the document; and to have a version number and baseProfile.

TK> Is this the correct ways ? So as authoring tools, do we need to
TK> still to generate DOCTYPE declaration or not generate anymore ?

Its optional. Its not incorrect, and its not required.

TK> Any comment on this matter ? what is the WG comment regarding this ?

Hi,

have you tried in another SVG user agent?

Opera, Firefox, Batik?

You have to be aware that the Adobe SVG viewer 3 is old code (not
seriously updated since 2001 or 2002, except for security reasons)
and it won't be updated in the future. So the Adobe SVG viewer is a
phase-out model. If I were you I would look into the alternatives
like Opera, Firefox, Safari and Batik.

There is even the possibility to run Batik as an applet inside
Internet Explorer, see http://xmlgraphics.

(Thanks for the kind words Antoine :) ). In any case, yes we are working on
performance (and on even better support overall with stuff like SVG in CSS
backgrounds for HTML)

RE: [svg-developers] passing javascript variables to another page

2007-02-27 Thread Chris Peto
Hi Harvey,

What are you using as browser. I remember there was a problem with FF and
onload being called to soon. I worked around it by trying get something
that I knew was in the svg. If it was not found then I did a timeout and
tried until everything was loaded.

Cheers,
Chris

Subject: [svg-developers] passing javascript variables to another page

hi,

my app uses javascript to change the color attributes of an svg image.

after these attributes have been changed by the user i want to be able to
send these color variables to another page where they can be used to create
another svg. my page is php and i can collect variables from a url or by the
POST method and pass these to the svg with an onload function. i'm ok with
this last bit.

my problem is sending the 'updated' variables from the first page. when i
send the variables using window.location or post the original variables got
from the svg file 'before' manipulation are sent, not the updated variables.

however if i change the function to an alert, the updated values are shown.

it seems like the page is being refreshed before the variables are passed
into the new page.

i've spent the best part of a day trying different things so i guess i
missing something fundamental, any ideas anyone?

cheers

harvey

RE: [svg-developers] Re: SVG on Dual Core Machines ?

2007-02-27 Thread Chris Peto
Hi Andreas,

That is great to here. I have a few clients that I would like to switch
over to native svg implementations, but they were just to slow compared to
ASV. Plus, little things like getComputedTextLength and getBBox were
missing or incoorect implemented, which was not a killer but made for a bad
looking UI.

I will check out the suspend functions, but again I like to show objects
being moved and only ASV did it smooth. The memory does not bother me so
much as performance. I will be looking forward to getting rid of ASV and
it's non standard implementations.

Does anybody have a converter from Adobe font format in svg to SVG standard
fonts? That is one of my biggest problems right now.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

It is true that for many things ASV is still the fastest SVG
implementation. But this is changing. ASV

Regarding Opera: it is funny, but performance for Opera on MacOSX is
often better than on Windows, and also, people forget to turn on
optimizations when developing SVG. As an example, people don't use
document.documentElement.suspendRedraw(time); and unsuspendRedraw,
simply because this wasn't implemented in ASV. So, if you change a
lot in the DOM, it is always better performance wise it is always
better to use suspendRedraw()/unsuspendRedraw() because otherwise
Opera will draw stuff continuously during script operation, which of
course slows it down compared to ASV.

I am testing upcoming SVG builds in Firefox, Opera and Safari and can
say that all the upcoming versions are faster than the previous ones.
Safari on the Mac is f.e. very fast when creating new elements per
script, often faster than ASV. But in some cases ASV is still faster.
Depends ...

Hi Everybody,

Just wanted to let you know I have been working on CGUI again. I have some
examples online:

Http://www.resource-solutions.de/cgui_widgets_mac/mac_widgets.svg

Opera - 100%, FireFox - 97% (animation by edit), IE 6 + 7 ASV - 100%

Http://www.resource-solutions.de/cgui_widgets/sliderzoom.svg

Opera - 100%, FireFox - 95% (animation by edit, problem with use), IE 6 + 7
ASV - 100%

Soon, it should be showing up in SourceForge.

Hi developers

I have a problem with the HTML-to-SVG communication in Firefox. I made a
simple example:

html_svg.html:

From HTML to SVG
<!--
function init()
{
var svgdoc = document.getElementById("mySVG").getSVGDocument();
svgdoc.getElementById("datetext").firstChild.nodeValue = "30";
}
//-->

HTML to SVG Test

Is this test working?

svg.svg:

http://www.w3. <http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd>
org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd">
http://www.w3.
<http://www.w3.org/2000/svg> org/2000/svg">

Firefox 2.0.0.3 (WinXP SP2) says, that getSVGDocument is not a function.
In other browsers like Opera 9.10 and IE 7 the example works.
Can someone of you give me a hint, why the error in Firefox occurs?

Thanks
Olaf

Yes, evt.preventDefault(). See the table at the bottom of the article[1],

It would be great if it has his own API.

Thanks for your time
Michael

Long time lurker, first time poster. I must say, the messages in this
group has done wonders in bringing me up-to-speed on SVG technology -
thanks! I've been a member of this group for probably 9-12 months now.
I'm not an SVG developer, but instead a program manager in charge of a
team that is working towards migrating raster images to SVG.

I'm looking for a WSIWYG SVG editor that can be embedded in a web
browser - any suggestions?

Hi,

I get a bit confused about modifying the content of a element.
The more I read, the more I feel confused. :-s
I would like to write a SVG code that will launch a countdown when cliking
on a rectangle (whatever the object).
Here is my code :
begin

http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd";>
http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"; width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0
400 250" onload="init()">

<![CDATA[
var sec = 20; // set the seconds
var min = 00; // set the minutes
function countDown() {
sec--;
if (sec == -01) {
sec = 59;
min = min - 1; }
else {
min = min; }

if (sec<=9) { sec = "0" + sec; }

<!-- time = (min<=9 ? "0" + min : min) + " min and " + sec + " sec "; -->
time = sec + " sec ";
if (document.getElementById) { document.getElementById("texte").innerHTML =
time; }

SD=window.setTimeout("countDown();", 1000);
if (min == '00' && sec == '00') { sec = "00"; window.clearTimeout(SD); }
}
]]>

Cliquez sur
le rectangle pour lancer le décompte

end**
I think that I need to replace the "innerHTML" by somethnig else like
:objet.getFirstChild().setData(countDown()) (doesn't work).
Any idea ?
Thanks.

RE: [svg-developers] Question about Opening and Saving a SVG file

2007-10-30 Thread Chris Peto
Hi,

It all depends on which database. MySql uses "Blob" for Binary Block Data
and SQL Server uses IMAGE. Then you have to create your sql statement and
download the binary data with functions like ODBC's SQLPutData (MSCV),
should be something similar in ASP.net.

Hope this helps.

Hello, Everyone~ :)

I have a trouble about saving SVG files to DB, whatever the platform.

I've continuosly tried to figure out how it worked, but
I didn't get any idea about it.

I want to prefer to use ASP.Net but it's no problem even though you use
Java or any language.

If anybody knows how to make it, plz help me out :(

Thank you for your help in advance.

Have a great day.

[svg-developers] focusHighlight must be inheritable

Hi,

I have over 500 planes that I import into a svg program, because the
focusHighlight is not inheritable I would have to go and reedit all 500
planes. Sorry, I will not do this nor my customer pay for such an act.
This leads to the fact that none of the browsers that support this new
feature can be used, so back to IE and ASV. Not good!

Yes, sorry about that. It was waiting for the SVG 1.2 spec to settle
down.

We have a much more recent (edited in the last few weeks) internal draft

Hello. I am new to the world of SVG and came to it because of a specific
task in mind.

I am currently working with a fellow student for a professor on an
online database that currently uses javascript and PHP to create a SVG
graph of datapoints from the database on the fly.

The issue we're currently faced with is that the person who created
this script is no longer with us and we're looking to have a clean
start after a number of stumbles that has littered our site with
unused code.

This bring me to the reason I am seeking aid. We would like to adapt
an already made (aka currently maintained) SVG script/program to
handle our graphing needs and we're wondering what are the top
recommendations out there.

We have discovered GraPL.Net, but we're currently housed on a Linux
server and have more experience with PHP than ASP. Of course if I've
misunderstood the flexiblity of GraPL.Net, please inform me.

Based on my search there are a number of SVG desktop programs and
converter out there, but every little internet/server-side (or psuedo
server-side) ones.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Lorraine

Subject: [svg-developers] evt and setingt new location after winXP
SP2...

hi

i read about the problems with local files after winXP/SP2 update
(<http://www.markme.com/jd/archives/005836.cfm>), but now i saw another
problem:

in many applications i do set links with something similar to

  onclick="location='/path/term.pl?letter=A&lang='+lang"

on or elements. after winXP/SP2 i get "Access denied, line 1
column NN" on all those elements. varying "location" with
"window.location.href" the alert may be different but the result stays
the same.

has anyone a clue to repair this behaviour?

other things i observed:
- switching winXP firewalls and so on off doesn't change anything.
- it makes no difference where the onclick-link goes to
- no difference if there's no string joining within the attribute value.

thanks
andré

I would play with the viewbox. The right click and other features like

Hi Tony,
  I don't know about such a problem, but you can return to the
original view by clicking on the "original view" from the ASV3 pop-up
menu. You don't have to reload.
  You access the pop-up menu by right-clicking on the svg image.
Cheers, Samy

Yes.

Perhaps you could point to the DHTML specification, its associated test
suite, and the implementation report on that test suite.

We can then examine, on a comparative basis, the interoperability and the
'fattiness'.

Google does not see the need to index XML content on the grounds that
there is none out there.

And indeed, if you use Gogle to look for it, there isn't :) nicely
circular.

Google has been asked to index XML content and W3C staff even showed
them how simple that was for any +xml media type, and even volunteered
code (which is trivial). But, little response.

Maybe they need more customers to ask them. Hint.

RE: [svg-developers] source for Chris Peto SVG editor/run locally

2004-10-22 Thread Chris Peto

Hi,

What do you want to do with it?

You probably did not get all the js files and to work well it also needs
php.

The currect version only works in IE6 sp1 ASV3/6.

I run it locally over apache with php.

Subject: [svg-developers] source for Chris Peto SVG editor/run locally

Hi all,

Can anyone (or maybe Chris himself) provide me with the complete
source of Chris Peto's web-based SVG Editor please or tell me
how to make it work locally?
(http://www.resource-solutions.de/svgeditor/main.svg)

I've tried to download the .svg file and all the linked
.js scripts and run it local, but it runs into many
microsoft jscript errors.

Thanks

Wil

RE: [svg-developers] Re: source for Chris Peto SVG editor/run locally

2004-10-22 Thread Chris Peto

Hi,

The php and apache are needed to write/read from the harddrive. If you
plan on not read and writing then is will work without the server and
php, which is pretty useless.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for replying.
I would like to study your example to make a webbased visio-like
diagrammer in SVG.
I didn't realise that you needed PHP and a webserver too.
Is it possible to run it without this? (e.g. by replacing the php
actions with local commands)

Thx

Wil
