I'm curious about the status of the Renesis SVG player. Nothing seems to be hosted at examotion.com anymore. Does anyone have any information about this? The company Examotion no longer exists. The people that were behind the company are discussing Renesis ownership. [svg-developers] a general SVG fallback page? (Re: SVG support detection in browserland)
As a final note, I believe that using an HTML fallback with a static image (if applicable) or a link+instructions on how to install ASV (or any other alternative) plug-in is a simple yet effective approach. :-) A friendly fallback helping people to install SVG capabilities, maybe the time is right. Next to that it should be friendly to end users, it should also be friendly to the many different SVG implementers. End to make it friendly to the SVG content creators maybe something like svg.org/IEfix.php?uri=http://myServer.com/myContent.svg (404, read the URL to catch the idea) is a good idea. It also occured to me that there were no courses on GIMP, Lynux, SVG etc.. If you want to touch up holiday snaps, then GIMP is a lot cheaper than even Photoshop Elements. Alternatively, if you work for a high powered computer company, or are an unemployed geek, you can modify GIMP or Blender or something and do very complicated things with it. I suspect that part of the problem with getting acceptance for fee software and non-propriatory formats is that you can't get certified for them (or can you). Is anything being done about this? However There are multiple options for viewing SVG in IE, next to the ASV and Renesis plugins there's also Mozilla-in-IE, SVG-through-Flash, Batik-handles-SVG, but those are not a double-click away solutions yet. [svg-developers] speed up fixing of SVG's loose ends and IE=broken (...stinking standards....)
Just like we managed to get Adobe to postpone the End-Of-Life of ASV, there's more we can do: On HTML: First everybody blamed 'other' browsers (but it works in IE), now even the broader public is starting to understand it's usually broken HTML (or just broken websites) being the cause, though you now also sometimes hear IE is broken or more often IE sucks. The broader public has mostly never heard of SVG, that's no problem. If something doesn't seem to work they first blame the things visible to them (the vehicles of SVG), a product name like for example Inkscape or Firefox or Google Maps. These might be bad examples though, as these are considered to offer significant added value or to be just COOL, mostly because they seem to just work. Improving the general it just works factor of SVG with some easy community effort (can start with just a few minutes) would speed up both the growth of SVG and IE is broken: - Fixing the MIME-type: Some content that is meant to result in an image on screen, shows up code or a saveAs dialog because it is not served as image/svg+xml This problem is definitely shrinking (and goes away once IANA adds it to THE list), but could shrink faster. Especially content that is linked to a lot, could use a polite report of needing a simple fix to stop it from being invisible to many (customers). Send along http://wiki.svg.org/MIME_Type You'll get thanked. - Not forgetting the namespace declarations: similar - Updating SVG Wiki: Join in. Use Wiki URLs in answering on this list - pimp SVG Visually of course !! clipart of the week on http://openclipart.org/cchost is a nice little example. Looking forward to many more, addicting (mobile) games maybe, screensaver pieces of art, etc. When you blog about them, also be visual, just use SVG (possible fallback: your browser can't handle SVG directly; see it indirectly through Java (Batik Squiggle WebStarted)) - report bugs: On viewers, editors, generators, content, documentation - ask for SVG as a feature: This is often covered already, if not: just ask - help Xbrowser projects: There are useful validators and Xbrowser scripting libraries that can use some help or promotion I'm sure the small minority already doing lots or all of these would very much appreciate your bit of help, as will you yourself. [svg-developers] Re: Will IE 7.5 or IE8 offer a browser with built-in SVG support?
Since Adobe will discontinue support for their SVG viewer, I am wondering if I should abandon SVGs for Flash? ASV is not the only SVG viewing option for IE. Not now and certainly not in the future. Why is Adobe discontinuing support for the SVG viewer? Only the decision makers know. Here 2 (extreme?) thoughts :-) short term: -Adobe owns Flash. Income. vendor lock-in. long run: -Adobe thinks it needs the open format SVG is, to be able to stand Microsoft competition. As more and more people understand the advantage of a real open format, but too many people think SVG is an Adobe(-only) format, Adobe is taking a lower profile to give room to other implementations. And after all it's editors that are Adobe's business, editors that still have significant SVG support. Will they release that code as open source? They said they won't ASV, in my opinion, is a fantastic viewer for SVGs. For its time it was. Some bugs of both the forgiving and non-forgiving type are rather annoying though. Creating cross-viewer multi-namespaced SVG full off event-handling is no picknick with ASV being one of the viewers. I like Opera's native support of SVGs, but right now, I have to focus on what my customers will use and they are using IE. As i said ASV is not the only solution with IE. Other IE-solutions are premature for technical or availability reasons at this moment. That is changing quickly enough, in time for when ASV is no longer to be downloaded form adobe.com more than 2 years away. There's a difference in what your customers use now and what they use more than 2 years from now. Some gentle education can make a difference, make sure to at least mention it. Talk money: the develop to standards, adjust for IE-way, the mobile web soon to explode (maybe your customers already have phones running Opera), semantic content making sure your customers can find you through Google, etc. And well, even Microsoft uses SVG, for example in a big product like Virtual Earth. Just make sure to now start adjusting (mostly only small changes) your SVG code so it conforms to the standard and where possible (the popular Firefox for example doesn't do all of SVG yet) also works in other viewers. Cheers, Ruud http://svg.startpagina.nl (loads of SVG links) PS: what about Adobe putting out a new version of the Flash player on 01/01/09, that also does SVG (only as a fall-back for lousy browsers) through a deal with Renesis or one of the companies delivering mobile viewers, not making any fuss about it ? [svg-developers] Re: OpenGL SVG rendering engine
What about Amanith? (Google result #2) --- In svg-developers@yahoogroups.com, aneurin.price [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings, I'm looking for an (Open Source) SVG rendering engine that can render natively to OpenGL; using OpenGL drawing commands rather than doing software rasterization and then converting the result to a texture or such. So far I've not found such a thing - all I've found are software like librsvg which uses Cairo as its canvas then converts the resulting image buffer to a texture. Possibly Glitz could be used here, but the documentation seems sparse and I think librsvg does a lot of its rendering internally. Other software I've looked into seems to be similar in this respect. So is there actually any software that does what I want? I can't really see any reason why it wouldn't be possible, though I imagine it would require rendering each element to an offscreen buffer, such as a texture, before compositing. The difference here is that the rendering would still be hardware accelerated as all the drawing and compositing would be done by the graphics hardware, rather than simply the final compositing. If I've missed something that makes this impossible/impractical, I'd appreciate being put right :). Similarly if there's already something out there that does that and I've somehow missed it. I hope that all made sense; I'm desperately tired so if I've missed some crucial point of the explanation, let me know. [svg-developers] Re: SVGs, JavaScript and Adobe Illustrator CS2 and SVG RoboHelp
1. Adobe SVG Viewer will discontinue support as of Jan 2007. After complaints from the world, Adobe postponed this to Jan 2008. You can download it from adobe.com till Jan 2009 You can still use it after that, you can't spread it outside your company however. 2. Both IE7 and Netscape 8.1 do NOT support SVGs natively. Netscape 9 will, IE 7.x might And next to whisperget rid of IE/whisper there are indirect options like the Renesis plug-in, or Batik either as an applet or Web Started on its own. Good would be to make sure your content is really SVG up to the standard and test it in different viewers. If a customer only uses IE or Netscape and they require SVGs, then a work-around is the only course of action. A gentle remark about other options like for example Opera or Firefox never hurts, if only to weaken the stubbornness :-) Let's hope that Netscape and Microsoft will join Opera and Firefox, in support of native SVG (within their browsers). From a business standpoint, I think it makes sense to fully support SVGs. Netscape is based on Firefox these days. If Internet Explorer shows up with good XHTML+SVG more (contrary to the continous dropping marketshare of now) people might use it for other reasons than it came with the machine, plus Microsoft might not mind putting a dent in Adobe's Flash. - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! [svg-developers] Re: ASV Replacement for IE
Since Adobe SVG Viewer won't be supported in the near future I would like to replace it. Adobe stops supporting it 1/1/8 stops offering the download 1/1/9 still allows you to use it (not spread it outside your company) after that It is wise to make sure your content is at least valid SVG to start with. Currently we've developed our application with IE and ASV. So I'm looking for any viewer compatible with IE: For plugins there's the Corel one (which is old and not being improved) and the Renesis one (which is new and being improved) You can also use Batik in an applet setting. A new version of IE might support it natively, as SVG is growing steadily. Plus you can of course gently let people know there's a world outside IE.. Opera, Firefox, basically anything but IE within a few months http://wiki.svg.org/Viewer_Implementations But none of those above are free. There ARE a few mentioned there that you don't have to pay for. Did anyone found something? Hi!, i have a question, is it possible insert a image into svg document when for example I do click in a link? Yes I tried with a java script function like this javascript is correct and makes the chance of confusing with Java smaller. im= svgDocument.createElementNS(svgNS,image); im.setAttributeNS(null,id,imagen+con[7]); So now you have a javascript object named im referring to an image element with the id image+con[7] im.setAttributeNS(null,xlink:href,mapa.png); I think you should change this to ..(xlinkNS,href,mapa.png); where you first define xlinkNS=http:// ... ; (look it up) svgRoot.appendChild(imagen); I think you meant ..(im); I think this quick reaction and maybe some Googling will get this sorted out. I'm assuming this has to do with either different coordinate spaces, the order of the transforms, or scaling performed at (0,0), but I'm not sure which. going from mouse coordinate to target coordinate in some viewers needs some scripting, see Holger Will's script on http://wiki.svg.org/Starter scaling works from the current (0,0) origin transforms are read right to left, upwards, for example: g transform=scale(9)g transform=translate(7,8)scale(5,6) stroke=none fill=redrect x=1 y=2 width=3 height=4 //g/g renders as g transform=scale(9)g transform=translate(7,8)rect x=5 y=12 width=15 height=24 stroke=none fill=red //g/g renders as g transform=scale(9)rect x=12 y=20 width=15 height=24 stroke=none fill=red //g renders as rect x=108 y=180 width=135 height=216 stroke=none fill=red / Good luck - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! [svg-developers] Build an SVG Developer extension for Firefox?
A 99% copy of my http://svg.org/story/2006/5/6/102519/5869 : SVG Webdeveloper extension or shiny donkey ? As with any technology, developing SVG content can too easily go wrong on little things in multiple places. I believe it's a small number of exactly those little things that many people creating their (first) pieces of SVG keep encountering. Though there are lots of helpful bits in tools and documentation around they are too scattered for especially the novice SVG developer. Therefore i think it would be incredibly useful if, just as the widely popular Web Developer extension for HTML, CSS, etc., a SVG Developers Firefox extension would come into existance. There's already the nice SVG Switcher extension that allows you to choose between 2 renderers. But what about the following functionality? Check/overrule MIME. Validate SVG. Check browsers compatibility. Advise workarounds for bugs. WebStart Batik. save raster. detect common coding errors. specialized search. links to spec(s), svg.org, wiki and svg.startpagina.nl. and we can probably think of much more functionality. Maybe cooperate with Chris Pederick of the award-winning Web Developer extension? If you're the one to start this off, ask for the mythical shiny donkey on #svg for some help. Yahoo! An XML language for coding-shortcuts to more Model-View-Controller separation in building visualisations in for example XHTML or SVG. Primarily it is meant as a learning and helping experience for beginner to expert developers, no matter which of the similar, but different 'flavours' of XBL you're targeting. Secondarily, it might also give writers and implementors of those different XBL specifications useful feedback on use cases, misinterpretations, valuable examples, missing documentation, etc. Because often whatever works for me now is what counts this list is meant to be a valuable adddition to what is already on the web for the specific XBL flavours. - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! [svg-developers] Re: SVG wiki at Wikipedia?
I spoke with Wikipedia developers yesterday !! (at Holland Open conf. in Amsterdam) to get them to allow SVG as content. Though they liked the idea they had a (security)problem with, but no solution implemented yet for, javascript possibly being contained in the SVG. If there's more people asking them for it (which would be the case when we want 'our' wiki to go there), or maybe even SVG people helping them out, that of course could help. And when the option is there, it means extra exposure for SVG. So i like your idea. So all i missed was the semi-colon in between couples of controlpoints in keySplines= ; thanks Heiko --- In svg-developers@yahoogroups.com, Heiko Niemann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Ruud, if you use keyTimes and keySplines together you need to define a set of bezier control points for each interval. - if you have keyTimes=0;.6;1 that's two intervals so keySplines would be e.g. keySplines= .7,.1,.2,.9 ; .5,.7,.3,.3 - if you don't use keyTimes you can use just one bezier function that controls the pacing for the whole animation modified sample: ... values=1,-1; 0,0; 1,-1 calcMode=spline keyTimes=0;.5;1 keySplines=.7,.3,.2,1;.818,.5,.9,.9 ... [svg-developers] Re: Anybody seen a dartboard in SVG?
I thought the tripple 20 would be almost white rgb(240,240,240), and the scale (right side of the board) would go from rgb(0,0,0) to rgb (240,240,240) (maybe but hopefully not with increments of rgb(4,4,4) ) It still isn't fully what it should be, but now at least i have visual feedback http://svgopen.steltenpower.com/darts.php?board=points Yahoo!
