True, but the actual 'going rate' seems to be lower (spotted a boxed talkie
that went for $45 a couple of months ago). Adventures seem to react even
more strongly to sudden demand than RPGs. The best example is probably
Duckman, which peaked at an incredible $275,... and then a bunch of people
became aware of this gold mine and flooded the market, so we're down to
about $30 at the moment (I know one guy on the GameTZ that made a small
fortune that way; he was _the_ source before others caught up). Playing
Games Interactive still has a few copies left:
http://www.playinggamesinteractive.com/item.html?PRID=988178

BadBen: I'm considering to snipe The Silver Seed, and also the GT Software
release of U6, as I need shrinked copies of both.

I suspect they'll go for more than I want to pay, so don't worry about

[SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Lee K. Seitz

I went to my local Wal-Mart today and dropped by the software aisle.
My internal reaction went something like this:

Gah!!! What are these?!? Are these PC games??? [Picks one
up.] Yeah, I guess they are. They shrank!

The boxes are about the size of DVD movies, but two or three times
thicker. They're still cardboard boxes, though, not DVD-style plastic
cases. I presume they still have the same ol', plastic CD cases
inside.

I'd heard some talk about the software game industry standardizing
their boxes a year or two ago, but didn't realize a decision had been
made. So will I start seeing all games coming out in this packaging
from now on? (If it's not a budget, bare CD case, that is.) Or is
this primarily some new requirement that some of the big stores (like
Wal-Mart) are imposing on companies if they want them to stock their
games? Regardless, I'd guess the effect would be for all companies to
start selling all their games in these boxes because it would be
prohibitive to print two different styles of each box.

So, now the Infogrames and Hasbro Interactive releases of the same
(Atari) games are different for more than just the HI logo changing to
Infogrames. Do I have to collect both versions? 8) On the bright
side, the smaller versions of Pac-Man: Adventures in Time and Revenge
of Arcade are about $5-10 cheaper.

I'd forgotten about that discussion. I guess 'cause it was so short
(comparatively). 8)

I'm not fond of the standardization, but I do welcome smaller boxes.
Let's face it, so many software titles today are nothing but a big box

waste of resources. I'm suprised the software industry hasn't gotten
the flack the recording industry did with CD boxes when CDs first came

But I'm curious, how many of you guys are going to buy two copies of a

Yes, but that speaks more to the pathetic lack of physical media that comes with
today's games. I no longer have the same anticipation when picking up a title
these days. All but gone are the neat extras, the elaborate manuals, the cool
maps, the trinkets, the stack of advertising, the catalogs.

Case in point -- Thief I came bundled with my former video card. It included the
manual in electronic format. I liked the game so much that I bought a retail
version just so I could support the company and get the extras. Aside from a
trapezoidal box the "extras" consisted of a 3 by 5" keyboard map and a 15 page
manual inserted into the jewel case. Oh yes, there was a registration card and a 4
page "catalog".

I HATE THAT!

Re: [SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Chris Newman

Yes, but why should this be restricted to limited editions? I think it should be
the norm, as it once was. I think this paucity of physical components falls under
the same category as companies releasing barebones documentation to virtually
require that the player buys the strategy guide (aka real manual). It's another
way to generate revenue.

Am I being too harsh here?

RE: [SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Hugh Falk

Yeah, I hate when you HAVE to buy a strategy guide to get what should be in
the manual in the first place...that is really lame and not right. However,
I generally find that the best strategy guides are available for free on the
net...so I don't buy the official ones any more.

As for saving all the doo-dads for limited editionsI'm okay with that.
Not thrilled, but okay. Sure, I'd like it more if they came standard. But
I also understand that most people aren't like me (that is Joe Consumer).
When faced with the choice of paying $10 more for doodads, Joe Consumer
usually buys the cheaper version. The game companies have to make money or
the games won't get produced. If this strategy works and keeps the games
coming, I'm for it. I still get the goodies...when I'm willing to pay for
them. Again, kind of like a toll road.

Yes, but why should this be restricted to limited editions? I think it
should be
the norm, as it once was. I think this paucity of physical components falls
under
the same category as companies releasing barebones documentation to
virtually
require that the player buys the strategy guide (aka real manual). It's
another
way to generate revenue.

Am I being too harsh here?

No, you're being quite accurate. Many consider Outpost to be the start
of this downfall; the manual blatantly omits pieces of information that
were necessary to play the game -- only to be included in the strategy
guide. Personally, I consider it to be King's Quest V, which included a
puzzle so "out there" that you *had* to buy the hint book to win the
game (my memory is fuzzy, but IIRC you have to catch an elf with a
feather and honey, but nowhere is it suggested you even need to capture
him in the first place, nor how to do it!).

Re: [SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Chris Newman

What's odd is that Sierra actually started the trend! I was impressed with Sierra's
packaging,
especially in their Golden Age of the late 80s to early 90s. Then Outpost happened.

Outpost was a bad boggle on several fronts. Version 1 was so bug-ridden that Sierra
actually advertised "version 1.5" on their game boxes (which supposedly addressed
them);
add to it the infuriating manual, and gameplay that was far too cumbersome, and you
have
a product destined for infamy.

That's too bad because I liked the concept, and the visuals. No to knock Sierra too
badly, but
this was the first step into an age of darkness.

I don't know. I think the Babel fish in Hitchhiker just about
qualifies. 8) I managed to figure out everything except the final
step before I got the hint book.

RE: [SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Hugh Falk

Yeah...wow...that just brought back an interesting memory for me...

Ma Bell had been broken up just long enough that the major competition
(Sprint, MCI, ATT) were all giving away whatever they could afford to get
your business. They would constantly try to one up each other. I switched
a few times just to get the benefits. Shoot...AT&T was giving you $50...not
$50 credit...a check for $50 to sign with them with no obligation to stay.
Anyway, Sprint had a promotion -- sign with them and get 2 free Sierra
games. One game immediately and another after 4 months (I think). The
first game I took was Outpost. At least I didn't have to pay for it! I
don't remember the second game...I may have switched again by then (and I
certainly didn't want another game the quality of Outpost).

RE: [SWCollect] New SKUs

2001-11-13 Thread Hugh Falk

That's one I figured out on my own. I didn't find HHGG as difficult as
other Infocoms...but plenty of other games stumped me...the first stumper I
remember was my first Adventure game...Scott Adams' Pirate Adventure on the
TI-99/4a. I couldn't figure out how to get past the alligator without a
hint book...wow lots of nostalgia for me today.
