REPORT: CHINESE WALKER FAILS TEST

BEIJING (AP) - A Chinese race walker has been kicked off the
Olympic team after failing a drug test, an official newspaper
said. Liu Yunfeng, who was China's top prospect in the men's
20-kilometer walk, tested positive July 13, the China Daily said
Saturday. Liu's fate hinges on the result of tests on a second
sample, the newspaper said. It did not identify the drug found in
Liu's first sample and did not say when the second result was
expected. If Liu's positive test is confirmed, the head coach of
China's race walking team, Zhang Fuxin, also could be prevented
from going to Sydney, the China Daily said. It quoted Zhang as
saying he knew nothing about Liu's suspected drug taking. Liu
made remarkable improvements in competitions this year, but
"there has been nothing abnormal in any postmatch tests," the
newspaper quoted the coach as saying.

JONES, GREENE WIN 100-METER RACES

BERLIN (AP) - Maurice Greene ran the fastest 100 meters of the
year, winning in 9.86 seconds Friday at the ISTAF meet, the last
major track and field competition before the Sydney Olympics.
Marion Jones won the women's 100, finishing in 10.78 to match her
world-leading season-best that she ran in London on Aug. 5. Both
marks broke meet records. Greene, who had the previous meet
record at 9.94, got off to a fast start out of the blocks and won
by a large margin over fellow American Jon Drummond, who finished
in 9.96. Tim Montgomery completed the sweep for the United
States, clocking 10.01. Jones trailed Savatheda Fynes of the
Bahamas for the first 40 meters, before accelerating to an easy
victory. "I feel real great after this race," said Jones, who
will seek a record five gold medals in Sydney.

I agree with another post which indicated that the coverage was generally
good, but that the camera angles switched a little bit too much.

As usual, there were a few comments that were way off base, most notably the
statement that El G. had a much harder time winning the five events than the
others did because it was a distance event. I'd actually say the distance
runners have it the easiest - they can afford to make mistakes and still
win.

But overall, much better than the NBC or CBS coverage I have seen over the
past few years - more action and less fluff.

You probably should be pleased by this, because it's the bad coverage that
really brings out the commentary on this list. And then the "praise" of it
comes in the form of people responding that it wasn't THAT bad.

As usual the ESPN coverage was pretty good.  Same day coverage is great;
it's as good as live. On the other hand, two day delay is as good (bad) as
two week delay. Once you already know the results the amount of the delay
doesn't matter that much - the thrill is gone.

Given the time limitations I thought the coverage of the actual events was
pretty good too. There was minimal fluff. And full coverage of distance or
field events is just not in the cards, so I don't expect it.

Memorable Minor Mistake: The comment that during the Brussels 100m that
Jones had "already made up the stagger" on her competitors. Huh? What
stagger?

Nice touch: scenes of the various cities shown during the commercial
cut-aways - gave a little flavor of the town without actually expanding into
a puff piece.

Overall, a good job.

Attention all people without a life (i.e.. those who are reading this instead
of doing major Labor Day beer-busting): you've got 24 hours (i.e., until noon
PDT Sunday) to cut yet another Sacto champion from the dinner table.

If you didn't vote previously, doesn't mean you can't vote now. And no, you
don't have to say the same thing two days in a row.

Here's the 6-pack of remaining potential dinner guests to choose from:

Pascal Dobert
Adam Goucher
Allen Johnson
Charles Austin
Adam Nelson
Lance Deal

gh

recap: day 1 eliminated Seaman & Mo, day 2 Greer & MJ, day 3 Gabe & Everett,
day 4 Lister, day 5 Howard, day 6 Capel, day 7 Meb & Lojo, day 8 Taylor, day
9 pappas, day 10 Setliff

OK, after all these days, the bubble finally burst for Adam Setliff. (so who
you gonna kick around next?)

most stunning development of day 10 was that a guy i had guessed as a
possible/probable winner suddenly jumped up to a solid No. 3 on the ding list.

(this being done a bit early, given as i have 75 people coming to the house
tomorrow, so much prep to be done; tomorrow will prob. be similalry truncated)

Lance Deal - STILL not a distance runner

how pissed am i going to be if this distance dominant list picks dobert or

goucher over johnson and austin- two OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS and u.s. record

holders.

my female nomination for dinner-- Natasha Kaiser

After reading Tim Layden's story about Adam Nelson in SI, I hope he's the
Survivor. I'd love to hear his stories about his evil twin during his days at
Dartmouth (Used to walk around with a Viking hat, looking for parties)

Alright, i give in. After days of voting for nelson i'm
now switching to the anti distance camp. May be Johnson, the one i want
to win, will get get lost in all the different vendetta's.

7 left and three are Adams? Eve should have offered apples to all three of
them.

Give Setliff the boot. I've given up my campaign to get rid of Deal because I
figure it won't work. Here's why: he's a veteran (people are suckers for the
old
warrior giving it one last shot) and he's from Eugene (half of the people on
the
list probably live next door to him). Go Goucher.

OK, here goes. I watched the Brussels and Berlin within the past week. Comments
on Brussels:
W100 - One of the announcers says, "Watch the center of the track," after which:
they show a closeup from the side
then they switch to a wide-angle shot from outside lane 9 - (I focus on lanes 3,
4, 5 and 6)
then they switch to a closeup on lanes 3 and 4
then they switch to a side angle, in from lane 9
THE GUN
just as the runners are leaving the block, they switch again to a wide-angle shot

Now, pray tell me, how is one supposed to watch the center of the track when they
keep changing the camera, including right after the start?

The men's 100 start was similar, but not quite as bad. BTW, Lewis Johnson, during
the rerun of the race, said that Maurice Greene had "already made up the stagger"
on the rest of the runners. He also called the 10K a "27-lap race."

During the 10K, Larry Rawson, who is usually pretty good, said Tergat was running
like a metronome, at the same time that the lap splits superimposed on the screen
were showing the pace dropping off dramatically, to almost 68s laps. Then he
completely missed the fact that Tergat was passed, by a non-lapped runner, on the
last turn and had to sprint to win the race. Pay attention to the race, Larry!

The camera work has always bothered me more than anything about track coverage.
Shots of the runners' feet, straight-ahead closeups, etc. do not allow you to
follow what's happening in the race.

Overall, however, this coverage showed a lot more actual action than NBC's
coverage does, which is great.

Cheers,
Alan Shank

t-and-f: Comments On/After Berlin

2000-09-02 Thread Bettwy, Bob

Just some comments after watching the Berlin meet and reading the latest
digest post (#3167).

First, who is Willy Beamon? Obviously from LA, is this really someone named
"Bill Beamon"? Coach, official, agent, athlete?

Thank goodness for ESPN and the Golden League series. I was really looking
forward to hearing Larry and Lewis (LewJo?) present us the meets this year.
They did a great job all year.

I am still not convinced that Donovan Bailey lines up for his race thinking
"nah, I don't need to try and win this race". Now, Ato is the one that has
me scratching my head. However, just like Capel, I expect to see him on the
stand in Australia.

I agree with someone's comment that the start lists could stay up longer on
the TV coverage.

Boy, I thought I was watching the Giovanni Evangilisti re-make in the
Women's LJ. Although it is dangerous to use the "distance boards" as a
guide, especially when you only watch one jump, but it looked like Kotova
went about 6.85 on the final jump! But, lo and behold, she got 6.96!! Just
enough to win some gold???

As far as the men short relay goes, I have no problem with the USA selecting
the HSI group to run. Ever since 1988, I have been a huge advocate of
keeping the same 4 guys together in all rounds. At the TAFWA luncheon this
year in Durham, USA Team Coach John Chaplin made it crystal clear that his
intention was to keep he same four runners in all rounds! Of course, if you
assume a gold medal, he acknowledged that we may leave two medals "on the
table" (as other can run in the rounds). For this reason, he said, he will
be getting pressure from athletes' "coaches, agents, trainers, wives and
spiritual gurus" to include "their guy" on the team. Resisting that
pressure was going to be a full-time job. My take is this: Gold for 4 is
WAY more important than other colored medals for 6 - and I think everyone
here agrees with that. The time run by the HSI group (37.65) says good
things about what they might be able to do down under.

The resistance, from the track cognoscenti, will be allowing the HSI group
to "brag" about their "relay gold in Sydney" should they win. It may sound
a little "un-team-like" to the entire American squad for them to say "look
at how great we are, we (HSI) won the gold by ourselves". Although I like
the HSI group and what John/Darrell/Emmanuel are doing, who here thinks we
wouldn't hear that in the months (years?) that follow? Bottom line, the
politics of keeping that group together or breaking it up just "because they
all are on the HSI team" worry me.

Hey, 38.18 for our second team. Each country gets two sleds in bobsledding
("bobsleigh"), so can we have two relay teams? Okay, okay, okay, no other
country would EVER agree to that. Well, maybe we could get the Chinese to
concur after we dangle the "Beijing 2008" carrot in front of them!!

For those of you that are not impressed with my posting here, I am sorry.
But age-graded, it is a personal best!

See you in Sydney,

Re: t-and-f: ESPN Coverage

2000-09-02 Thread Thomas Pinckney

Walt and Larry:
(1) Same day coverage is vastly superior to coverage delayed by a couple of
days. I'll rearrange my schedule to watch a Golden League meet if broadcast
the same day. If delayed by a day, I won't -- just tape it and look at it
at my convenience. Same day, it's easy to avoid results. Next day or later,
almost impossible.

(2) OVerall, coverage has been quite good, just rushed. THe women's 5k last
night looked like a great race, and I'm glad that you all squeezed in the
last 2 laps. How much better if we could have seen Gaby's break, and then
the pack catching her. But I'm sure you all would have much preferred to
have 90 minutes or 2 hours to work with. Given the time limitations, last
night's show was good.

(3) Minor beef: Don't rush the start lists! Sometimes the startlists are
posted long enough to read only 3-4 names. If watching from tape, I always
have to go back and pause on the start list.

(4) Commentary has been good, with the notable exception of the last lap of
Tergat's 10k.

(5) Second minor beef: This summer there was more switching of camera
angles than I remember in the past. Too much, IMHO. Sometimes it was hard
to follow what was happening in a race because the angle kept switching.
And switching to a crowd scene during an important part of the race (which
only happened a couple of times) was really annoying. I don't know how much
of this ESPN controlled -- perhaps the problem was the feed you received.

Overall, good shows. Much, much better than anything NBC has shown in
years. I >never< watch NBC live anymore -- I'll only watch taped coverage
so I can FF thru the fluff. But, if possible, I'll watch ESPN at broadcast
time.

t-and-f: my thoughts on ESPN coverage

2000-09-02 Thread Kebba Tolbert

I thought the coverage of the meet was pretty good. I was in Europe for
three weeks during August and got to watch Zurich, Brussells, and a few
other meets on Eurosport, DSF adn other chanells. They basically all use the
same vidoe feed though. Anyway, it seemed as if the pot of gold jackpot was
almost played up too much last night. (just my opinion). One criticism --
more of a diff of opinion -- i felt Larry really blew it when he said it's
much easier for the sprinters to take golden league money home than the
distance runners. A distance runner has won every year. When is the last
time El Guerroujj or Haile lost a race. Maurice has lost twice this year.
Marion is just Marion - and almost lost to Inger a few weeks ago. whereas
for people like El G and Haile the win is usually a forgone conclusion --
you can tell because even when the pace slows most of the rest of the pack
still backs off as if they're afarid to get in the mix.

Two things that I've seen the Europeans use that are cheap and would hel the
viewer a lot are:
1) when they show each athlete at the starting line they also list on the
screen their seasonal best and yearly best. The other is that in the
distance races they let the clock keep going after the winner has crossed so
that you can see what time the others ran. Also when they show splits in the
distance races a graphic comes up to show how far behind ech of the next
runners are.

the praises I have is that they you guys didn't talk just to be talking. you
kept interviews short and to the point. the meet was quick and had a good
feel to it.

just my .02,

Kebba

My participation in masters track predated the development of age-grading
tables, and nearly predated development of the metric system. :-) I
remember some agreement among jumpers that a reasonable target for masters
was their best high school mark in the event.

Age-grading may be useful for ego-stroking and bar-boasting, but it
probably doesn't have any place in media reports for general consumption.

would this be an legal competition in the imperial world? The bar was
raised by 5 - 5 - 4 - 3 cm

So if we start at 2,15m (7' 0 1/2"), what will be the raising in
inches, and would this raising be alowed?

I do not think, that the raising in the way they did in Berlin would
be alowed in i competition measured in imperial units.

This drives me to one conclusion: It doesn´t make any sence to
convert the results of a ( highjump and pole-vault ) event measure in
SI units into imperial units...

    My
take on the ESPN coverage of the Golden whatever series is that it was both good
news and bad news:

    Good
news in that we saw, with certain limitations (time element mostly) what the
rest of ther world gets.

    Bad
news in that we won't be getting it from Sydney.

    Once
again, the problem with US TV coverage of our sport has seldom been techical
experteise (at least not since the cameras stopped automatically following the
winner and left us to wonder who placed behind him/her) or commentary (with some
obvious exceptions). It has always been with the approach taken by the networks,
their insulting display of taped coverage with "live-type" commentary,
the infuriating up close and personal items, etc.

The coverage has been excellent. No need to
comment. On monday morning every office place in
America is talking about the NFL game the day
before. The is no mention of the "coverage"
because they show the game therefore people
simply can talk about the game. They don't have
to worry about the "coverage". ESPN shows the
meet. Therefore we can talk about the meet and
not have to be concerned about the
"coverage".Larry and Walt (behind the scenes) and
Lewis are doing an excellent job as always.

Unfortunately, the NBC "coverage" at Sydney will
be an absolute disaster which is why this list
will be forced to talk about the "coverage". I
predict there will be more talk on this list
about the "coverage" than the the competition,
which is unfortunate.

ESPN has always been good covering the meets.
They are owned by ABC. I wonder if ABC would do
as well if they ever telecast a meet. I wonder
if their "focus" groups would say we need the
crappy coverage DWIGHT's NBC "focus" groups say
we need? We will never know because of the
monopoly stranglehold NBC has for the next
decade.

t-and-f: Oztrack 100,000

2000-09-02 Thread Steve Bennett

The Oztrack Website
reached 100,000 visitors yesterday.

http://www.oztrack.com

Based in the Blue
Mountains west of Sydney,
The website was
started as a novelty in July 1996 as a way to meet and exchange ideas with other
coaches and flush out more Australian Athletics results onto the Internet. The
site has been periodically updated and about a year ago it looked like it could
make 100,000 by the Olympics.   The last few weeks have seen upwards
of 500 visitors a day to the main page which is indicative of the interest that
is building in the World toward Athletics.

The Oztrack Email
List now has almost 700 enthusiasts from around the world.

The International
Athletics Coaches Network is a directory that includes a large number of active
coaches and their interests.

Being in Europe I don't get to watch ESPN coverage. In Europe, because
each country has its own TV station covering the meet, and other
countries are therefore taking a feed they cannot control, commentators
keep saying something like "the local director keeps switching cameras,"
Now, maybe the commentators shouldn't tell you to watch the centre of the
track, but I figure (Americanism) that that's something you should be
able to work out for youself.

Re: t-and-f: my thoughts on ESPN coverage

2000-09-02 Thread Arthur Snoke

I wrote a comment to this effect during the NBC coverage. Hopefully it
can get into the job description for their camera crews. It is most
important to keep the camera fixed and clock running during heats so one
can see who qualifies.

In the heats, it wuold be nice if they told us for the later heats what
the cut-off time was for moving on.

But that assumes we will see heats of anything other than sprints ...
Maybe the women's 1500.

Another wish-list is that when they post the results, they include the
wind information. Rarely is it there.

I don't understand why I should lock my eyes on the center of
the track ANYWAY- I'm not that interested in whether it's a blue or red track,
or Mondo or Tartan or whatever-
I want to see what the ATHLETES are doing ! :-)

Kind of like a photographer saying 'watch the birdie'. I've never
yet, after 44 years, been able to figure out what darned birdie
he's talking about. If I ever find that danged bird, it's
fried chicken time.
