t-and-f: dellinger update
August 4, 2000 Former Oregon Track Coach Bill Dellinger Recovering From Stroke MONTCLAIR, N.J. Former University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Dellinger was transferred Friday afternoon to a cardiac monitoring floor at Mountainside Hospital, as he continued to recover from a stroke suffered in his sleep early Thursday morning. Dellinger had been in intensive care for much of the past 24 hours, until doctors moved him late Friday morning because of concerns about a potential embolism a potential blood clot or air bubble in the bloodstream near his heart. Tests proved negative, although he may remain in the unit for the near future. The head coach of the Duck mens track and field program from 1973-98, Dellinger had traveled to the East Coast earlier in the week to visit friends before lecturing at the Newport Running Camp in Newport, Rhode Island, scheduled for Aug. 8-13. His wife awoke Thursday morning, and found him in a near-paralyzed state on the right side of his body. He was immediately admitted to the hospitals emergency room just north of Newark, N.J., before he was transferred to the hospitals intensive care unit. He remained in the ICU ward until Friday afternoon when he was transferred to the cardiac monitoring unit. Family and friends reported Friday morning that Dellinger had feeling and some movement among his left extremities and was able to move both his left arm and leg, but the muscle control of the right half of his body was still seriously affected. He was able to move his right leg slightly, although he was still without feeling in his right arm, and his right eye was still closed. Visitors noted he could understand others when they spoke, although he could only see through his left eye, and his ability to communicate verbally was severely impaired. Doctors will continue to evaluate his progress and will run tests in the upcoming days to try and determine the severity of the stroke. The 66-year-old Grants Pass, Ore., native is regarded as one of the nations foremost authorities on distance running as his distance pupils broke 18 American records, made 15 Olympic appearances and won 12 NCAA individual track titles. On the team front, his track and cross country teams won five NCAA and 14 conference titles. The former Duck athlete was a three-time Olympian and bronze medalist in the 5,000 meters in 1964. t-and-f: dellinger rehab hospital address
if you would like to send a card, flowers, etc. to bill dellinger as he recovers from a stroke he suffered a week ago thursday, he was moved yesterday (thursday) to an area rehab center where he'll spend several weeks beginning his rehabilitation...i'm sure he and his wife Marol would appreciate any support they can get, although she has been bombarded with calls, so please limit these if you can... the address is: Kessler West - 1199 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ, 07052 as far as updates on his condition - he can understand people just fine and can speak fairly well considering although he often times has problems finding/remembering a word or two to finish off a sentence or complete thought and gets frustrated...physically, he can sit up in bed, and even tried to walk a few steps with other peoples' support yesterday when they transferred him..his left side (arm and leg, etc.) is basically fine, but his right side (arms, legs, etc.) will need a lot of work in the upcoming weeks..there's an lengthy list of tests they're running the next few days to get a better idea of how much coordination/motor control he's lost and how much he will be able to regain... please keep him in your prayers... sincerely, g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
t-and-f: dellinger update
somebody last week asked me to give an update to bill dellinger and i apologize for my tardiness, but here's a quick update... since he suffered a stroke in the beginning of august, he spent about five weeks in his initial rehab phase in west orange, new jersey (at the renowned kessler west rehab center) before being flown back to eugene on a generously-provided nike corporate jet (with former pupils and american record holders alberto salazar and rudy chapa at his side, as always)... since then he's progressively improved, and it's obvious he much prefers the familiar surroundings... as his legs have gotten stronger, he's almost walking completely unaided (although still very slowly) around the house, although he has a cane available if he needs it...his left arm (the side barely effected by the stroke) is getting stronger and is now probably 50-60 % of its former strength which is fine, while his right arm is still swollen and just starting to regain feeling (some minor movement in the fingers, but more so in the upper arm)...he can left his right arm (the side of his body initially paralyzed) to nearly mid-chest level but it takes some time and a fair amount of work (although he could barely lift it at all 3 weeks ago when he got back into town)...his hearing/seeing or cognition of others is fine, and his speech is coming along...he can now get about 1/4 to 1/3 of his sentences out without any problems (and his cadence is progressively returning to normal), although he has trouble remembering how to pronounce certain words due to the stroke's effect on the brain activity paths, and he'll get tripped up on about half of his thoughts... all in all, his rehab therapists have been very encouraged by his progression the past 3 weeks and think he should be back at full walking/speaking/arm movement in less than a year...although i would think his golf days, woodchip workouts, dart throwing adventures maybe a long ways off the toughest thing for him is the fact that several post-collegians have moved into town to train under him -- among others including steepler ray hughes (who's been piling on the mileage), 10k runner nolan swanson (just getting back into it) and former duck 5k/10k'er matthew davis...he wants to be coaching them so badly and his communication obstacles frustrate him, although the limitations give him incentive to work that much harder...with his recent success with olympian 5k'er nick rogers, it goes to show that there are few if any coaches who know as much about bill about training/speedwork...when he's ready to start giving workouts/coaching them (probably in a month or so) it'll be fun to see how quickly the others improve... and please, feel free to drop him a card, media guide, t-shirt, or anything at his home address to keep him motivated and working at the rehab (1993 fircrest drive, eugene OR 97403) -- i try to stop by several times a week to keep him updated on track news and always throw as many numbers/times/splits/etc. at him as possible just to challenge him, and he gobbles it all up just fine...for someone who's he's being forced to completely start over and relearn how to pronounce words/thoughts, those close to him in eugene have been impressed with his improvement in 3 weeks and have all the confidence he can soon regain everything he needs to continue to coach at the highest levels... btw, thanks for all the kind words/cards/concerns already passed along the past few weeks... sincerely, g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
t-and-f: oregon men's regular-season record
taken from my weekly Oregon cross country press release ...On the other side of the coin, the Duck men posted a solid, fourth-place showing at the NCAA Western Regional, but did not receive an (NCAA Championships) invitation since third-place Cal Poly failed to garner an at-large bid. During the year, the Mustangs beat only one NCAA qualifying team, Indiana, and appeared to be at least one win short of qualifying via the at-large process. Prior to Monday, the Duck men's team had positioned themselves with one of the nation's best head-to-head records nationally with wins over 19 of the 31 eventual NCAA qualifying teams, including automatic qualifiers Alabama, Arizona, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Missouri, South Florida, William & Mary, Villanova and at-large qualifiers Air Force, Colorado State, Dartmouth, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Arizona, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Weber State. Trying to improve their at-large potential, Cal Poly had appeared at one of the nation's top regular season meets, the Roy Griak Invite on Sept. 23, but were hurt when they finished a disappointing 15th as a team with 369 points, beating only one NCAA qualifier, the Hoosiers (17th, 380) while losing to Providence (first, 104), Wisconsin (second, 147), BYU (third, 166 ), Arizona (fourth, 171), Colorado State (fifth, 176), Weber State (eighth, 204), Eastern Michigan (ninth, 318), Wake Forest (10th, 322), Minnesota (12th, 353) and Missouri (14th, 356). In essence that performance ended up negating any regional effort that was third place or worse (since only the top two automatically qualify). Mark Conover's squad was only 15 points away that day in St. Paul, Minn. from another regular season head-to-head win against an NCAA qualifier (Missouri) and another three points from a third victory (Minnesota). Looking back at last Saturday's misfortune, it's hard to lay blame on the Ducks' regional performance either. Sophomore Jason Hartmann and senior Michael Kasahun, second and fourth overall, improved by 14 and 22 places, respectively, from last season; junior Adam Bergquist (34th) scored his first regional points for the team, and was 27 places better than his only other regional appearance in 1998.; senior Lincoln Nehring (45th) also scored his first regional points and was 15 places better than 1999's race; and a trio of freshmen --two of which were walk-ons -- ran fourth (John Lucas, 38th), sixth (Noel Paulson, 60th) and seventh (Brett Holts, 74th) with Holts collapsing at the line after running fourth and fifth at prior meets this season. Cal Poly on the other hand, went from having its third man behind Oregon's sixth man at the Roy Griak Invite on September 23, to having its fifth and final scorer ahead of UO's fourth runner and only seven seconds behind the Ducks' third man . The Mustangs certainly rose to the occasion, but were penalized Saturday for not traveling to multiple, large regular season invites (probably in part due to a limited travel budget), and running poorly at the one they did travel to (while coincidentally handing other potential qualifiers an extra win). -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
t-and-f: correction to oregon/cal poly post
i have a correction to my recent post about oregon & cal poly's at-large ncaa qualifying record (and hopefully it didn't sound like i was in any way detracting from mark conover's fine program)... the mustangs actually had a second head-to-head win (i was told by somebody on our staff that they only had one, so i didn't completely do my homework) against nebraska at the roy griak invite, and actually ran that day in minnesota without two of their top runners due to sickness... regardless, the mustangs ran tough at the regionals and again showed that mark conover is one of the best coaches on the west coast, and certainly develops more out of his team's talent than 99 percent of the coaches in the nation do ... regardless of who's racing monday, some congratulations need to be directed towards coach conover and his team for a fine effort beating four other teams that were currently or ranked prior (oregon, arizona state, portland, washington)... g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

The winding road along Pea's Creek offers motorists breathtaking views of the "canyon" and the Des Moines River Valley. The sandstone "Ledges" rise nearly 100 feet above the floor of the streambed. Thirteen miles of hiking trails lead up and down steep slopes to scenic overlooks and provide access to spectacular views of Pea's Creek "canyon". While most of the trails include steep portions, a fully accessible interpretive trail around Lost Lake is located at the southern part of the park. BRUSHY CREEK STATE PARK (northwest of Ames about 40 miles, between Lehigh and Fort Dodge) With approximately 35 miles of multi_use trails, there are trail activities for everyone including horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and mountain biking. Mountain biking was introduced recently on a trial basis. Mountain bikers are asked to ride the 20 miles of trails north of the lake project area. A map of these trails is on display at the information kiosk located in the northern equine campground. GREAT WESTERN TRAIL __ The trail runs from southwest Des Moines in Polk County to Martensdale in Warren County. The Great Western Trails is a popular rail trail route that runs 17 miles from a suburban setting in Des Moines into some of Iowa's classic rural landscape of rolling hills, small fields and farms, and wooded river valleys. The smooth, crushed_limestone surface with periodic rest shelters and numerous access points allows for some easy out_and _back rides of various lengths. The original railroad bed dates back almost 100 years to the Chicago, St. Paul and Kansas City railroad. A bit of the history of the area can be seen at a rest stop along the trail where you can read about the life of the now defunct town of Lida. The northern end of the trail shows the growth of modern Des Moines as it meanders past suburban homes and through a golf course. At the North River crossing, the trail passes through a heavily wooded corridor that is a haven for wildlife. CHICHAQUA VALLEY RECREATION TRAIL __ The trail runs from near Bondurant, about 5 miles outside of Des Moines, to Baxter, in Jasper County. This classic 20 _mile railroad_grade trail crosses through a forested river valley and some open farm country in central Iowa's rich agricultural setting. The trail opened in 1987 and was built with a finely crushed limestone surface on the abandoned roadbed of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. The railroad whistle_stop towns, Valeria, Mingo, Ira, and Baxter, provide trailside services for hikers and bikers. The proximity to Des Moines and the presence of good trail facilities make this a popular bicycling route in the summer months, good for family outings and easy touring. -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

t-and-f: media gripes about sacramento
most people probably don't (and shouldn't since media have a tendency to complain) care too much about someone's recent remarks about sacramento's ability to accommodate working media at the olympic trials... as a photographer/reporter/and mixed zone manager, i'll agree that sacramento was deficient in a few ways for media coverage, but to be honest, media are always complaining about accommodations, even in tracktown usa... no venue, esp. a football stadium, is going to be 'perfect' for media, but it's the effort that counts...head media coordinator bob burns did a splendid job of trying (and correcting nearly everything) to address every situation that popped up during the trials...his hard work and cordial relations were the best i've seen stateside in my decade of work in the field...he should be applauded for making the best of the situation as possible... obviously, facility improvements could make things easier, but they did a wonderful job, especially since 90 percent of the workforce was volunteers and the rest sorely underpaid... comparing that stadium to a track-only hayward field in eugene is not fair...as the media relations director for the duck venue, i get inadequacies all the time from our media about our so-called 'mecca', especially its stairway to heaven (approx. 43 steps worth)... nice effort sacto! g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
t-and-f: training questions for diabetics
one of our coaches on our staff has found out in the past year that he's a diabetic and his training has really started to be effected... he's a NIDD (non-insulin dependent diabetic) and really goes after the stadium stair/stair machine types of workouts for 50 min. to upwards of an hour, so i assume he does a fairly large share of his volume near or above his threshold (if that has anything to do with it), and i'm guessing a weekly workload/intensity/training profile most comparable to an elite 800-meter or 1,500-meter runner... does anybody have any resources (books, published articles, web sites) where he can go to find out where to better coordinate his body & his training? thanks, g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

t-and-f: cross country all-america awards in the 60s, 70s and 80s?
attention collegiate cross country stat geeks (like myself) i'm trying to confirm the accuracy of all-america awards for our historical purposes and was hoping somebody could confirm the determining criteria in previous decades, going back to the early 60s i know in the 90s it was the top 25 overall (regardless of citizenship), and any additional americans constituting the top 25 u.s. citizens...then, when they expanded the fields from 182 runners to its current 255 size, they supposedly upped each awards' size to the top 30 in each classification (overall/americans) the ducks have only been competing on the men's side since 1963 (bowerman refused to participated until then, which robbed several greats, including dellinger, of some hardware), so if somebody knows any info since then, that would be great i especially would be interested in knowing when the two-headed (overall & 'additional americans') rule was instituted sincerely, g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

since dave was my neighbor in eugene for at least 4-5 months last year, here's all i know he's living in portland right now with his parents trying to save money and train, since he couldn't find a job in eugene that he could do both last winter/spring...last outdoor season he ran 5k's at mt. sac, and at least one stanford race, but could never get in a fast heat and kept winning b and c races in times between 14-14:10 he trained with the eugene nike guys under bill dellinger - nick rogers, nolan swanson, ray hughes and rick fuller - when he was in town last year before he moved back to portland...since he's moved back, he's basically self-coached another recent big race was as an alternate for the the chiba ekiden relay team in nov. - since everybody ran their legs in the relay, he was offered the chance to run a concurrent 5k on the track for all the alternates, and won that in around 13:52 or so...he then followed a few weeks later with a strong performance at the 10k road champs (4th? 5th?) in field that had abdi, nick and dan browne in it his only affiliation is with a small running group in portland for his gear, but he obviously is being wooed by the major shoe companies now as far as university of oregon affiliation, he might have spoken to our coaches about using a last track season of eligibility in '01, but it didn't work out g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

i just got a call from a friend friday night who had said that he had heard from a farm team member that former UConn All-America distance runner Travis Landreth collapsed on a tempo run today and passed away from what may have been a massive heart attack... that same friend who told me, said that Travis had indicated when he temporarily trained in Eugene three years ago that he knew he had a heart murmur back then... if somebody could pass along an address where cards could be sent to, it would be appreciated... sincerely, g Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

t-and-f: ap style for field event agate results
i just called hytek software and they revealed that nobody had ever informed them that their 'AP format' of results in their track software was actually slightly incorrect i know an agate format for a running event should look like this (100 - 1, Joe Smith, Oregon, 10.01. 2, ..) but i wasn't sure about the field/combined events (i.e. would they include both english and metric marks, if they'd use 1/4 or .25 for a fraction, lowercase or uppercase w for wind-aided marks with or without reading, decathlons/heptathlons (include the word 'points' or not), etc.) i checked the ap style guides in our media services office, but they don't have answers to the above examples (only running events) also, some newspapers alter the style a little here and there to suit their needs (that's why i don't want to rely solely on what my local paper does) if somebody could pass along a sample of an OFFICIAL AP style guideline for all types of events, it'd be much appreciated, and i'll forward it to the correct person at hytek for any future software updates g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
t-and-f: in the crosshairs - men's us american 10k record
after interviewing kennedy, abdi and culpepper at the finish line after usa xc's, it sounds like the american 10k record should be erased sometime this year since all three have their eyes on it (i would assume meb, brad hauser and nick rogers could take equal aim if they wanted to, but i didn't talk to/ask them sunday) although the usa finale in eugene may not be as ideal as oslo or other european sites, it'll should still be an interesting head-to-head meeting, with the track record of 27:50 by former duck bill mc chesney jr. likely in jeopardy g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

list member steve dinitale wins the 's.i.d. for a day contest' (feel free to take over for any of the major meets this season) for a grievous error on my part when i mentioned the potential for a fast us 10k champs at hayward field, i listed the oregon school record (27:50.82 oops!) as the track record -- a time that is 21 seconds slower than the ACTUAL track record (henry rono, 27:29.90) if they break that one, they might as well keep going for nenow's 27:20.56 g -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!

t-and-f: american men's 10k record in jeopardy at friday's cardinal invite
alert: all distance geeks - if you haven't heard, the american 10k will be under assault this weekend in palo alto, so get your butt to stanford to cheer them on (ps i talked to meb friday and he's planning on running, too) Kennedy to run 10k at Stanford Bob Kennedy, the American record holder at 5,000 meters, next month will tackle the 10,000 meters for the first time since his debut at this distance two years ago. Kennedy is entered in the 10,000 at the Cardinal Invitational on May 4, held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. It was on the Stanford track in 1999 that he ran 28:38.37 in his first and only attempt at the distance, and his return to the 6.2-mile race has been highly anticipated ever since. Kennedy has spoken openly about concentrating on the 10k this season and his desire to break Mark Nenow's American record of 27:20.56, set in 1986. His fitness in 2001 is very sharp, according to Kennedy. Coming off of a 12th-place finish in the 12k at the World Cross Country Championships in March, his fitness has only improved. "Ever since World Cross, my workouts have gone to another level," said Kennedy, who lives and trains in Indianapolis. "I haven't been as happy with my fitness in the last three years as I am right now." Three years ago, in 1998, Kennedy broke his own American record in the 3,000 with a time of 7:30.84. He will by no means be running alone at Stanford. Other Americans expected in the race are Olympic 10,000 finalist Abdi Abdirahman, 10k Olympian Alan Culpepper, and 5,000-meter Olympians Nick Rogers and Brad Hauser, among other top runners. A host of world-class Kenyan distance runners are entered as well, including Luke Kipkosgei and Albert Chepkurui, both of whom have run under 13 minutes for 5k. -------- Geoff Thurner Assistant Director/Publications Coordinator University of Oregon Media Services - Athletics Len Casanova Center 2727 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR 97401 Phone: (541) 346-2250 Fax: (541) 346-5449 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.goducks.com GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!! - GO DUCKS!!
