An add in TF News reminded me of something... sorry GH. My hope is that everyone here boycotts the Worlds in Paris, in addition to any other French products, until Chirac and his socialist cronies get out of town... I'll enjoy watching the athletes on TV. Try setting the format of your messages to PLAIN TEXT, as opposed to HTML or Rich Text. This situation is REALLY BAD, but as Bob said this may be the ONE time that the NJSIAA has tried to do something to help the sport and kids. Being a former Gr. IV Head Coach I know the frustrations of trying to get a team ready to compete early then late of the M of C. One solution could be instead of just switching the groups around time wise (Group IV had a 9am start this year but will start at 1pm next year) switch what groups compete on the early dates and who competes on the late dates (i.e. - next year Gr. I IV have relays on the Jan. 18th weekend and indiv. on the Feb. 2nd weekend). Also, I'm sure someone has looked into it, but what about The Peddie School or Lawrencevill Prep School (they have a 200 meter Mondo banked, but I do not know the seating). Finally, someone may need to CONVINCE Princeton officials of the value and importance of athletics in kids lives and hopefully they will soften their position and let the kids play! But they have to deal with whatever dates Princeton gives them. Each year those dates are less and less desirable. Years ago, we had a better choice and the setup was State Relay Championships on the first Weekend in February ( Two Groups Saturday, Two Groups Sunday) - State Individual Championship Meets two weekends later, all on the same weekend ( Two Groups Saturday, Two Groups Sunday) - and the weekend after that was the Meet of Champions. It was great, but impossible to do now. Because of the number of Athletes and Spectators involved, there is no other place in the State to hold the meet. Princeton almost through out the whole program a few years ago and Boyd Sands and to do a lot of negotiating just to keep us in - and this is while we pay them $1100 an hour. I am now coaching at a Group IV school and am not happy about the situation, but I also know that the powers that be did not DO this to us. They know that no one is happy, but unless a place an be found to run that can also hold a couple of thousand people ( spectators and runners) we are stuck. One of these years Princeton is going to give us dates in December and tell the NJSIAA to take it or leave it. Guess what, we will be having State Meets in December. There just is no choice. The other thing is that is if we are out of Princeton, which can happen, there will be NO State Meets and watch as schools all over the State use that as an excuse to cancel Winter Track. You can complain all that you want, but what everyone needs is another AVAILABLE Site. The 168th Street Armory is out as they are booked every minute during the winter. And remember, it has to be available for two weekends all day Saturday Sunday and another weekend day for half a day, all of this in February. It has to sit a few thousand people and have a 200 meter track. There is no place in New Jersey that can meet the physical requirements not to mention the dates. In South Jersey, we run ALL of our meets in Pennsylvania. I know that even in North Jersey, which does have number of tracks that some conference meets are run at the Armory in New York City ( Out of State). If you can solve all of these problems, you will be the hero in New Jersey among the track people forever. You have no idea how many people have tried to address your concerns every year. But if you have the solution, we are willing to take it. The NJSIAA Committee has said that for years. In South Jersey we have tried to solve our smaller scale problems for years. Is the State relay meet still in Princeton? I know that Princeton hasn't been thrilled with having the high schoolers there to begin with, so maybe meet officials are taking extra care to avoid an incident that will give the school further grounds to recind their welcome. Yep. I've seen school record boards where separate records are kept for 200m, 220y, 400m 440y, 800m, 880y, 1600m, the mile, 3200m and 2 miles. When metrics were introduced here in 1980, they promptly threw out all the previous records---including those for field events! It had taken quite a while to get all of them restored. Best example of this is the indoor mile all-group mark of 4;06.6, set in 1973 by Vince Cartier. On several occasions it was announced at the indoor state meet that the 1600-meter mark was broken, once by a Scotch Plains coach serving as announcer. What's sad is that Ed is talking about a state association of high schools. It seems to me that anybody who is too stupid or too ignorant to understand that a metric distance cannot be treated as superior to a distance that is a foot longer (measured in feet), or that a 4:06.6 mile must be the 1600m record at least until someone runs faster for 1600m, should not be permitted to do anything on behalf of an educational institution or an association of educational institutions, other than sweeping the floors or cooking lunch. If everyone ran for their sponsors, there would be more Kenyan and Moroccan runners allowed, therfore improving the comepetition. Another solution could be to allow B and C teams. Unfortunately that would be too upsetting for many. If you think about it, the present setup really just holds many great runners back. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mcewen, Brian T Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 10:28 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: t-and-f: Good show by Moroccan B team at XC Worlds Careful where you throw a stone The U.S. has a few notables that weren't born here and grew up most of their early years elsewhere; like Keflezghi, Abdirahman, and DeReuck. /Brian -Original Message- From: Rich Harrington [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, March 24, 2002 10:14 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: t-and-f: Good show by Morroccan B team at XC Worlds Look at those French names. It looks like Morroccan B team to me, though maybe there's an Algian or Tunisian athlete there. It's time to do it like US Nationals. Athletes here don't represent their states. They represent New Balance, Adidas, Puma, Nike, etc. The last summer Olympics moved me to form this opinion, when I saw that one of the small oil countries from the Middle East (UAE ?) had gone out and recruited some Slavic athletes for their weightlifting team. It somehow renders the concept of nationality irrelevant. This doesn't apply to many nations yet, but things are certainly moving in that direction. 4 France 71 390 Sghyr Ismaïl13 386 Essaïd Mustapha15 388 Lahssini El Hassan23 389 Serbouti Mohammed33 384 El Ahmadi El Hassan(75) 391 Zoubaa Khalid(76) Rich Harrington [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: t-and-f: Borzov and misunderstanding population genetics
Perhaps, Mr Entine, "they" (runners of West African ancestry) use drugs too... since corruption is certainly NOT limited to any race. Speculation without PROOF is dangerous and irresponsible Mr. Entine. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jon Entine Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2000 7:39 PM To: Conway Cc: Track and Field List Subject: Re: t-and-f: Borzov and misunderstanding population genetics Mr. Entine .. \ I have not denigrated any of your hypotheses regarding genetics .. What I merely stated was that your hypothesis is narrow in scope dearly ONLY with genetics and leaving out other scientific areas such as sociology, economics and the like EXCEPT Mr. Hill, if you had read my book, instead of attacking it without having read it, you would recognize that I do NO such thing. In fact, 80 percent of my book deals with social and cultural issues. .. (and yes As for your request of me to provide an explanation regarding "And if you have a powerful explanation for why runners of West African ancestry have been over-represented by population and usually dominated the 100 meter since the early part of the century (even when the number of black participants could be counted in the dozens worldwide), yet have never been even adequate at long distances, let's have it." that answer lies within the reason why any group of people dominate any event - fins the javelin, Finns don't dominate the javelin. North Africans the distances North Africans don't dominate the distances.. Americans the sprints "America" is not a coherent, genetically based population shaped over thousands, or even hundreds, of years. In contrast, many sub-populations in Africa are. As I wrote, you seem to ignore the genetics for a popular, folkloric argument. And if you would like a more detailed explanation then I suggest you first un-sidestep the question that I asked as to why there are no West Africans among the sprint leaders now or ever Apparently you haven't looked very closely at the list of the top 500 all times sprinters, 494 of them who trace their primary ancestry to West Africa. Considering the lack of opportunity, coaching, etc. in the region of West Africa today, West African participation and success in sports that demand quick burst energy and jumping ability, and are widely accessible (running, basketball) is remarkable, even higher per capita than American blacks. In football, which basically no one plays in West Africa, it's off the charts. Since you seem to like to address only those things for which you have immediate answers and ignore those for which you have no answers at all .. And if you knew much about track at all you would realize that Borzov's still wind sea level performances at Munich on its relatively soft track equate quite well in conversion to today's times 1) Mr. Conway, what's the Borzov obsession you have. I don't even mention him in Taboo. And as I have written many times, whether he is good or great or whatever is totally irrelevant to the issue at hand. And even on face value he would have won this years Olympic 200 with his hands still raised in the air !!! And as for your statement about one pretty good soviet sprinter I named several white sprinters and could name more to which you again ignored the statement and had no reply .. AS you made no reference at all to the plethora of female white sprinters that have and continue to be among the worlds best in the sprints .. So no not hyperventilating Mr. Entine just calling you to task and responding to the aura of arrogance that you routinely bring to this list .. Mr. Hill... Again, such an outburst. I recommend, rather than exploding yet again across the Internet, you might check out the three chapters in which I discuss in some detail black and white female sprinters. On page 323 (updated in the paperback), women of West African ancestry have swept 85 percent of the 100 meters, 90 percent of the 200 meters and 65 percent of the 400 meter all time best times over the past decade WHEN you factor out performances by Chinese drug users and pre-fall of the Berlin Wall East Europeans. Even without the drug filters, West African blacks have swept 81 percent of all time 100 meter races, 64 percent of 200 meters, and 22 percent of 400 meters -- that is remarkable considering competing females of West African ancestry represent about 2-3 percent of the competing population, virtually all from Western countries since West African women are by and large not permitted to participate in elite sports.
