An add in TF News reminded me of something... sorry GH.

My hope is that everyone here boycotts the Worlds in Paris, in addition to
any other French products, until Chirac and his socialist cronies get out of

I'll enjoy watching the athletes on TV.

BTW - I've also cancelled a trip to Montreal this summer, after hearing

no need to apologize to me, but if you were truly thinking of going and have
now changed your mind, I think you should apologize to yourself. As my
mother would say, this is a classic case of cutting off your nose to spite
your face.

If you're a member of this list, obviously track is a very central part of
your life. Don't know if you've ever been to a World Champs, but track just
doesn't get any better than that. To allow the actions of a few members of
the booboisie to steal that from you means they win.

Boycott whatever French products you want, but why deprive yourself of
something so wonderful, to so little effect. The U.S. team will welcome your
presence in Stade de France.

Try setting the format of your messages to PLAIN TEXT, as opposed to HTML

For example, your reply and Larry's initial message from (I'm assuming) his

on what e-mail software you're using.

Hope that helps,

This situation is REALLY BAD, but as Bob said this may be the ONE time that
the NJSIAA has tried to do something to help the sport and kids. Being a
former Gr. IV Head Coach I know the frustrations of trying to get a team
ready to compete early then late of the M of C. One solution could be
instead of just switching the groups around time wise (Group IV had a 9am
start this year but will start at 1pm next year) switch what groups compete
on the early dates and who competes on the late dates (i.e. - next year Gr.
I IV have relays on the Jan. 18th weekend and indiv. on the Feb. 2nd
weekend).

Also, I'm sure someone has looked into it, but what about The Peddie School
or Lawrencevill Prep School (they have a 200 meter Mondo banked, but I do
not know the seating). Finally, someone may need to CONVINCE Princeton
officials of the value and importance of athletics in kids lives and
hopefully they will soften their position and let the kids play!

It stinks but what else can be done?

Larry: I can tell you, based on inside knowledge, that this situation is
not one that the NJSIAA has chosen voluntarily. They and the Winter
Track Committee know the whole scenario is unfair.
But they have to deal with whatever dates Princeton gives them. Each
year those dates are less and less desirable. Years ago, we had a better
choice and the setup was State Relay Championships on the first Weekend
in February ( Two Groups Saturday, Two Groups Sunday) - State Individual
Championship Meets two weekends later, all on the same weekend ( Two
Groups Saturday, Two Groups Sunday) - and the weekend after that was the
Meet of Champions. It was great, but impossible to do now. Because of
the number of Athletes and Spectators involved, there is no other place
in the State to hold the meet. Princeton almost through out the whole
program a few years ago and Boyd Sands and to do a lot of negotiating
just to keep us in - and this is while we pay them $1100 an hour.
I am now coaching at a Group IV school and am not happy about the
situation, but I also know that the powers that be did not DO this to
us. They know that no one is happy, but unless a place an be found to
run that can also hold a couple of thousand people ( spectators and
runners) we are stuck.
One of these years Princeton is going to give us dates in December and
tell the NJSIAA to take it or leave it. Guess what, we will be having
State Meets in December. There just is no choice. The other thing is
that is if we are out of Princeton, which can happen, there will be NO
State Meets and watch as schools all over the State use that as an
excuse to cancel Winter Track.
You can complain all that you want, but what everyone needs is another
AVAILABLE Site. The 168th Street Armory is out as they are booked every
minute during the winter. And remember, it has to be available for two
weekends all day Saturday Sunday and another weekend day for half a
day, all of this in February. It has to sit a few thousand people and
have a 200 meter track. There is no place in New Jersey that can meet
the physical requirements not to mention the dates.
In South Jersey, we run ALL of our meets in Pennsylvania. I know that
even in North Jersey, which does have number of tracks that some
conference meets are run at the Armory in New York City ( Out of State).

If you can solve all of these problems, you will be the hero in New
Jersey among the track people forever. You have no idea how many people
have tried to address your concerns every year. But if you have the
solution, we are willing to take it. The NJSIAA Committee has said that
for years. In South Jersey we have tried to solve our smaller scale
problems for years. We have no viable indoor tracks for very large scale
competitions. that is the problem. What is the answer unless someone
contacts Bill Gates to build and maintain one for us?

Well, you have to remember that Jadwin Gym isn't just a track - it's also
Princeton's home venue for Basketball:

Home games on Saturdays:
2/1 (men)
2/8 (women)
2/15(men)
2/22(women)
3/8 (men)

Varsity Track
1/25 Princeton Relays
2/8 Penn State/Penn Triangular Meet (Women's)

So, it's already got a pretty crowded schedule. I think that in the past,
the Women's team used to play up in Dillon Gym, which alleviated some of
that schedule crunch, though I'm not sure when the switch occurred.

Is the State relay meet still in Princeton? I know that Princeton hasn't
been thrilled with having the high schoolers there to begin with, so maybe
meet officials are taking extra care to avoid an incident that will give the
school further grounds to recind their welcome.

In the end Dan is right. It's still essential for kids to be respectful to
officials' instructions, whether they agree with them or not.

Almost as ridiculous is refusing to leave the unsanctioned facility when
told repeatedly to do so by officials with a history of harshly enforced
rules. Doesn't justify the rule, but it also doesn't reflect all that
well on the intelligence of the athletes in question.

 was
not present) who said they heard both sides of the story and decided to
 DQ
the kids anyway. WHO IN THE HELL ARE THESE PEOPLE, AND WHY IS THEIR WORD

hurdler, who claimed she entered her seed card, and an NJSIAA official
 said
she didn't. The word of the official was law, and the girl was not
 allowed to
run. I'm trying to figure out the intent of the NJSIAA. Is it to uplift
 the
integrity of scholastic sports in NJ, or ego trip? I can understand a
repremand, but to DQ runners outside the realm of competition is
 ridiculous.
The team, without 3 of it's top runners, ended up losing the meet by 1

Blinn's finest hour was one of its last. At the Texas Relays one year, the
USA 4x100 team was the featured attraction -- Carl Lewis and his crew. At
the end of the meet, they had a match race in the 4x4 with Blinn -- and
Blinn won by a nose. The times were actually a bit slower than Baylor ran in
the main division, and of course none of the guys on Team USA were
quarter-milers. Still it was darn entertaining.

Texas would schedule a dual with Blinn every now and again, more or less
just so they could get stomped and Stan Huntsman could use that as proof
that Division I schools need more scholarships. I'm tired of seeing 23-foot
long jumper, was how he famously put it one year.

Regarding another post on this thread, I do imagine the foreigners/local
kids angle with regard to the tennis program played a factor. Probably a big
one. Still, Blinndergarden acting like academics and image are a big deal is
kind of ludicrous.

not just dual meets, either. barton was/is good, but blinn was just
dominant, period - they were the arkansas of juco tf and they had a winning
streak at juco nationals to back it up. rumor has it that the major relay
meets created the current competition divisions (i.e. 'university'
'college open') specifically because blinn would roll into town and make
the big, bad university boys look bad by thumping them around the track.

- a san jacinto college ex
(another good program (both men's and women's) scuttled)

p.s. i really have to wonder why in the hell a juco is concerned
with 'quality of students' when all you really have to do to get accepted is
to graduate from high school - simple solution, raise the entrance
requirements, if the stated aim is indeed a sincere one. if i had to guess,
i would say that higher educational opportunities (any) for black youth are
at much more of a premium than those for rich white kids (due to following
reasons) - who i would venture to say are just coasting through because they
did not have the game for d1, d2, d3, naia - if they do not have the head
for it, either, then i would also have to question the worth of their
scholarships, and would then have to go into the considerations of the major
discrepancies in education (and therefore opportunities) which exist between
products of rich white suburban school districts and poor inner city
primarily minority school districts as well as poor rural school districts,
etc. but that is just my opinion, i could be wrong . . . did not mean to
get off on a rant there.

Ed,

Fortunately, the real NY State meet, or Federation meet, (which allows
wild card teams and parochial schools) is held at the same site each year,
at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
It is held a week after the NYSPHSAA meet, which excludes most parochial and

At Wariananco park, Elizabeth, there is a line which marks the
course from start to ffinish. But we still put marshals out at crucial
points for two purposes: 1) to make sure no one cuts the course; 2) to make
sure that they go the right way.

It makes no differenece how many athlketes go off course, what makes
the difference is that crucial points are properly covered by officials.
Look at what happened in a big college race several years ago---a coach
(Mike Brady of princeton) hyad to run down the leaders who hade made a
mistake on what is evidently a compliated course. When are people going to
realize that someone running a tough CC race is not out for a walk in the
park.

One problem with NY is that they change the site of the state meet
every year. We had a four-course cycle in NJ some years back, but then
decided it would be best to put the last two weeks of the state meet at the
same course every year---and, ion addiion, there is a major invitation meet
there earlier in the year which is attended by rwo-thirds of the
state;teams, including mosat of the teams and athletes who have a shot at
state honors. The course is also open to practice runs every daym as are two
of our other sectional sites. In a small state like ours, and with a
central site like Holmdel, no one is all that far away.

Well, perhaps I can be excused for overlooking someone who dropped out of

almost immediately after becoming a U.S. citizen and winning the World
Championships. Perhaps I should have said native born.

Not much on the list about Golden West! Some great times (a little problem
with the clock) but some fast running in a lot of events. Anyway, besides
Kim Mortenson's National 3200 record of 9:49.59, who are the top five girls
HS 3200/2mile time. One of the Shea sisters in there? # 4 all time last
night.
But who had the top 5, after Mortenson? help guys.

RE: t-and-f: On state records

2002-05-26 Thread Rich Harrington

Yep.

I've seen school record boards where separate records are kept for 200m,
220y, 400m 440y, 800m, 880y, 1600m, the mile, 3200m and 2 miles. In most
cases the records for the imperial distances are substantially superior.
Coaches seem to do this so that they can show that the athletes that they've
coached in more recent years get on the board.

Message text written by Ed Grant
Our state association keeps no records outside of its own
championship meets. When metrics were introduced here in 1980, they
promptly
threw out all the previous records---including those for field events! It
had taken quite a while to get all of them restored. Best example of this
is
the indoor mile all-group mark of 4;06.6, set in 1973 by Vince Cartier. On
several occasions it was announced at the indoor state meet that the
1600-meter mark was broken, once by a Scotch Plains coach serving as
announcer.

What's sad is that Ed is talking about a state association of high schools.
It seems to me that anybody who is too stupid or too ignorant to
understand that a metric distance cannot be treated as superior to a
distance that is a foot longer (measured in feet), or that a 4:06.6 mile
must be the 1600m record at least until someone runs faster for 1600m,
should not be permitted to do anything on behalf of an educational
institution or an association of educational institutions, other than
sweeping the floors or cooking lunch. If this sort of thing is tolerated
in and by those schools, you have to wonder what else is being taught
there. That the earth is flat, perhaps? That 2+2 = 5?

RE: t-and-f: Good show by Moroccan B team at XC Worlds

2002-03-26 Thread Rich Harrington

No stone throwing here. I'm just trying to look at it from a practical point
of view.
If everyone ran for their sponsors, there would be more Kenyan and Moroccan
runners allowed, therfore improving the comepetition.

Another solution could be to allow B and C teams.
Unfortunately that would be too upsetting for many. If you think about it,
the present setup really just holds many great runners back.

Careful where you throw a stone

The U.S. has a few notables that weren't born here and grew up most of their
early years elsewhere; like Keflezghi, Abdirahman, and DeReuck.

Look at those French names. It looks like Morroccan B team to me, though
maybe there's an Algian or Tunisian athlete there.

It's time to do it like US Nationals. Athletes here don't represent their
states. They represent New Balance, Adidas, Puma, Nike, etc.

The last summer Olympics moved me to form this opinion, when I saw that one
of the small oil countries from the Middle East (UAE ?) had gone out and
recruited some Slavic athletes for their weightlifting team.

It somehow renders the concept of nationality irrelevant. This doesn't apply
to many nations yet, but things are certainly moving in that direction.

Perhaps, Mr Entine, "they" (runners of West African ancestry) use drugs
too... since corruption is certainly NOT limited to any race.

Speculation without PROOF is dangerous and irresponsible Mr. Entine.

 Mr. Entine ..
\
I have not denigrated any of your
hypotheses regarding genetics .. What I merely stated was that your
hypothesis is narrow in scope dearly ONLY with genetics and leaving out
other scientific areas such as sociology, economics and the like

EXCEPT Mr. Hill, if you had read my book, instead of attacking it without
having read it, you would recognize that I do NO such thing. In fact, 80
percent of my book deals with social and cultural issues.

.. (and yes

As for your request of me to provide an
explanation regarding "And if you have a powerful explanation for why
runners of West African ancestry have been over-represented by population
and usually dominated the 100 meter since the early part of the century
(even when the number of black participants could be counted in the
dozens
worldwide), yet have never been even adequate at long distances, let's
have
it." that answer lies within the reason why any group of people dominate
any
 event - fins the javelin,

Finns don't dominate the javelin.

North Africans the distances

North Africans don't dominate the distances..

 Americans the sprints

"America" is not a coherent, genetically based population shaped over
thousands, or even hundreds, of years. In contrast, many sub-populations in
Africa are. As I wrote, you seem to ignore the genetics for a popular,
folkloric argument.

And if you would like a more detailed explanation then I suggest
you first un-sidestep the question that I asked as to why there are no
West
Africans among the sprint leaders now or ever

Apparently you haven't looked very closely at the list of the top 500 all
times sprinters, 494 of them who trace their primary ancestry to West
Africa. Considering the lack of opportunity, coaching, etc. in the region of
West Africa today, West African participation and success in sports that
demand quick burst energy and jumping ability, and are widely accessible
(running, basketball) is remarkable, even higher per capita than American
blacks. In football, which basically no one plays in West Africa, it's off
the charts.

Since you seem to like to
address only those things for which you have immediate answers and ignore
those for which you have no answers at all .. And if you knew much about
track at all you would realize that Borzov's still wind sea level
performances at Munich on its relatively soft track equate quite well in
 conversion to today's times

1) Mr. Conway, what's the Borzov obsession you have. I don't even mention
him in Taboo. And as I have written many times, whether he is good or great
or whatever is totally irrelevant to the issue at hand.

And even on face value he would have won this
years Olympic 200 with his hands still raised in the air !!! And as for
your
statement about one pretty good soviet sprinter I named several white
sprinters and could name more to which you again ignored the statement and
had no reply .. AS you made no reference at all to the plethora of female
white sprinters that have and continue to be among the worlds best in the
sprints .. So no not hyperventilating Mr. Entine just calling you to task
and responding to the aura of arrogance that you routinely bring to this
 list ..

Mr. Hill... Again, such an outburst. I recommend, rather than exploding yet
again across the Internet, you might check out the three chapters in which I
discuss in some detail black and white female sprinters. On page 323
(updated in the paperback), women of West African ancestry have swept 85
percent of the 100 meters, 90 percent of the 200 meters and 65 percent of
the 400 meter all time best times over the past decade WHEN you factor out
performances by Chinese drug users and pre-fall of the Berlin Wall East
Europeans. Even without the drug filters, West African blacks have swept 81
percent of all time 100 meter races, 64 percent of 200 meters, and 22
percent of 400 meters -- that is remarkable considering competing females of
West African ancestry represent about 2-3 percent of the competing
population, virtually all from Western countries since West African women
are by and large not permitted to participate in elite sports.
