t-and-f: Bret Schoolmeester Interview
"I think the main thing [to which] I would attribute any sort of success I've had is that I've been able to stay healthy and I've been able to stay serious. So, durability and attention span are two things that are really important in college. A lot of people get sidetracked by a lot of other endeavors and there is nothing wrong with that, but this is the kind of sport that takes years of commitment to get a lot better." http://www.mensracing.com/athletes/interviews/2005/bretschoolmeester.html _ Dont just search. t-and-f: 2006 Edition of Florida Relays Canceled
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA SPORTS INFORMATION Wednesday, August 24, 2005 CONTACT: CHRIS RUSHING 352-375-4683 EXT. 6121 OR MIKE VIETTI EXT. 6120 2006 EDITION OF PEPSI FLORIDA RELAYS CANCELED GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Due to ongoing and anticipated construction surrounding James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track, the 2006 Pepsi Florida Relays have been canceled. The University of Florida is currently in the midst of a multi-phased expansion and renovation project to McKethan Stadium and the Lemerand Center, which both adjoin Percy Beard Track. The project, which began July 7, 2005, involves the expansion of McKethan Stadium, the construction of new baseball facilities and the renovation of team locker rooms in the Lemerand Center. The project is slated to be completed by the end of August in 2006. "We have to do what is best for this program," Florida women's track and field coach Tom Jones said. "We will have a large amount of construction going on at Lemerand and to put on an event of this magnitude, it would be difficult with the lack of space available. We know that this cancellation will leave a large void, especially with the high school programs that make the trip here every year for this event." The Pepsi Florida Relays began in 1939 and have been held every year since with the exception of years during World War II (1942-46). At the 62nd edition of the event in 2005, more than 3,000 athletes from more than 300 high schools and universities were set to compete before inclement weather forced the final day to be canceled. "This wasn't an easy decision," Florida men's track and field coach Mike Holloway said. "The coaching staffs and the administration felt that it was the right decision to make given the circumstances. We're looking forward to making the Florida Relays bigger and better in 2007." Typically one of the nation's largest opening meets of the outdoor track and field season, the 2006 Pepsi Florida Relays were slated to be held March 23-25. t-and-f: Lananna Named Associate AD/Director of Oregon Track and Field
Lananna Named Associate AD/Director of Oregon Track and Field EUGENE, Ore. Vin Lananna, who owns a distinguished reputation as one of the nations top collegiate track and field coaches, has been named Associate Athletic Director/Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at the University of Oregon, Ducks Athletics Director Bill Moos announced at a press conference Wednesday at Hayward Field. I am thrilled with Vin's decision to join the University of Oregon's intercollegiate athletic program, Moos said. His tremendous success in coaching, along with his experience in collegiate administration, makes him the perfect person to lead Oregon's track and field and cross country programs. During all of our conversations, I could tell that Vin has a genuine respect for the Oregon tradition and legacy and shares with me, and many others, the vision of what our program is capable of achieving." In his 11-year career at Stanford that began in July 1992, Lananna quickly built the Cardinal into the sports top combined mens and womens program. His cross country and track and field squads claimed four NCAA team titles (3 mens/1 womens) among their 36 top-10 NCAA finishes (21 mens/15 womens), and Stanford athletes won 22 NCAA track and field individual titles. At the Pacific-10 Conference level, the Cardinal men and women racked up 17 team titles (8 mens/9 womens) and 45 individual crowns (25 mens/20 womens). In return for Stanfords excellence, he was a multiple honoree as NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year (1986, 96, 97, 2002), NCAA West Region Cross Country Coach of the Year (1995, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2002), Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year (1994, 95, 96, 98, 99, 2001, 02) and Pac-10 Track and Field Coach of the Year (2000, 01). He has served as director of athletics and physical education at Oberlin College (Ohio) since July 2003. After listening to the vision that Bill has about what the American track and field capital can be and should be, theres no other place better to do it than Eugene, Lananna said. Theres an amazing love of the sport in this community that you cant find anywhere else. Im excited about extending the programs tradition of excellence at the national level year-in and year-out so it spills over to the national arena. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, Lananna was tabbed as track and field head coach at Dartmouth College in 1980 and was later promoted to assistant athletic director for track and field and cross country in 1985. At the NCAA level, his Dartmouth teams posted six top-20 cross country finishes including runner-up efforts in 1986 and 87 to go along with two top-20 womens placings, and more than 25 combined All-America honors in track and field and cross country. His mens squads also captured eight consecutive Heptagonal League cross country titles (1984-91) and one Heptagonal League track and field crown (1988), and his womens squad claimed four Heptagonal track and field runner-up finishes in cross country and two in track and field (1988, 89). In return for their success at the Hanover, N.H. institution, he was selected as NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year (1986), District Cross Country Coach of the Year (1983-87, 89, 90) and District Track and Field Coach of the Year (1985, 87, 88, 91). At the U.S. and international levels, he was appointed mens assistant coach for the 2004 Olympic Games and 1999 World Championships, as well as junior coach for the 1990 and 1996 World Cross Country Championships. His Stanford pupils have also shined at the national and international levels a list that includes 2000 Olympians Brad Hauser (5,000), Gabe Jennings (1,500) and Michael Stember (1,500), 1999 and 2003 World Championships qualifiers Hauser (10,000) and Lauren Fleshman (5,000), and Dartmouth graduate and two-time Olympic marathoner Bob Kempanien (1996, 00). He began his coaching career as cross country head coach at C.W. Post College in Greenvale, N.Y., in the fall of 1975 after graduating from the institution with a bachelor of arts degree in history and psychology in the spring. As a track and field athlete from 1971-75, he ran cross country and track and was captain of the 1974 harrier team that finished fourth in the NCAA Division II Championships. He added a masters of science degree in education from Long Island University in 1989. Lananna (6-17-53) and his wife Elizabeth have two sons Brian (21) and Scott (19). t-and-f: Viktoria Andonova Signs with Miami
Andonova signs with Miami http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-localprepsigning16jun16,0,3173669.story By Sharon Robb STAFF WRITER Posted June 16 2005 CORAL SPRINGS · Viktoria Andonova, one of the nation's best jumpers, signed with Miami. Ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of last year and earlier this season in the high jump, the Coral Springs grad swept district and region titles this season despite a knee injury that forced her out of her third and final state meet. Andonova won four state titles her sophomore and junior years -- two in the high jump and two in the triple jump -- and broke the state record (6-0) last year. She set school records in the high, triple and long jumps. Her personal best in the high jump is 6-1½, which already ranks among the nation's top college jumpers. The honors student was recruited by most of the top track programs, including UCLA and Florida. "She has already jumped heights that are scoring at the national meets," Coral Springs track coach Brantley Barr said. "She can step right in there and compete at the national level for them. It's nice she stayed close to home so we can go down and watch her. I will not be surprised if she is an NCAA champion and at the next level before she leaves UM." Her mother and coach, Lyudmila, is a former world-record holder and Olympian from Bulgaria. She is expected to help coach the jumpers at UM. The family moved from Bulgaria five years ago. Andonova is working on her U.S. citizenship so she can compete for the United States. _ Don?t just search. Find. t-and-f: NCAA SID Round-Up
Ark Arkansas Claims National Title No. 41; Spearmon Defends NCAA 200 Crown SACRAMENTO, Calif. Arkansas reigned supreme once again as the Razorbacks captured their third-straight NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship and 12th outdoor national crown in front of a crowd of 10,200 at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. Arkansas now owns an unprecedented 41 NCAA titles, the most of any NCAA Division I track program. The Razorbacks outstanding performances racked up 60 points for the first-place team trophy, while Southeastern Conference opponents Florida and LSU finished second (49) and third (36), respectively. BYU and Florida State rounded out the top five and tied with 34 points each. Its nice to have No. 41, Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. Florida gave us a great meet and really pushed us with everything they had. I would rank this meet as a close second to the NCAA indoor meet (earlier this year). We were so well-balanced and everyone gave a 100 percent, but thats what Ive come to expect. We dont like to lose. Its a tradition thats been handed down by teams from the past. I think this team is one of the great ones and people will compare them to the squads from 1984-85 and 1994-95. The convincing victory came after the 200-meter dash when UAs trio of fantastic sprinters earned 17 points with a 1-3-8 finish and clinched the meet. Sophomore Wallace Spearmon Jr., led the crew as he successfully defended his 200-meter title and reclaimed the school record from senior Tyson Gay with a new world-leading time of 19.91. The winning time is seventh on the all-time collegiate list and is the third-fastest ever run at an NCAA meet. I knew I had to get out, so once I came around that turn I knew I had it, Spearmon said. I had to step up when it counted and help the team. On the straight-away I looked over and saw Tyson and (Xavier) Carter, so I knew I was in a good spot. I couldnt have asked for a better ending. Its like a Disney movie. It was awesome and it sealed the meet, Brauman exclaimed. Wallace has been banged up for the past month and he was able to put a good one together in the finals of the NCAA Championships. Spearmon is now a four-time NCAA champion and seven-time All-American. There is little doubt that the Fayetteville, Ark., native will leave an indelible mark on the University of Arkansas as he announced after his performance that he would more than likely turn professional based on the advice of his coaches, McDonnell and Brauman. Gay had recorded the previous school record on Thursday night when he put up a 19.93 in the semifinals, besting Spearmons 19.97 from April. During Saturday nights final he finished third with a time of 20.16, while LSUs Xavier Carter took second place (20.08). I wasnt shocked at all that Wallace won, Gay said. He has a tendency to put it together when it counts. Im happy for him. Senior Omar Brown was the next Hog to finish when he came in eighth. Brown turned in a time of 22.38 after he cramped up towards the end of the race. All three runners earned All-America honors by virtue of their finishes in their final races in an Arkansas jersey. Gay closed his career as a two-time NCAA champion and seven-time All-American, while Omar will go away as a member of the national championship relay team and a four-time All-American. That was terrific, McDonnell said. Ill remember those guys for a long time. They are great athletes and great friends. Senior Terry Gatson picked up Arkansas first two points of the day when he finished in seventh place in the 400-meter dash with a clocking of 45.68. It was Gatsons fourth-career All-American honor. In the semis he registered the second-fastest overall time and a career-best clocking of 44.93 and was hoping to carry that performance over to the finals, but it was Baylors Darold Williamson who took the tape with a time of 44.51. The 1,500 meters was next on the schedule and sophomore Adam Perkins was coming off a five-second personal-best time of 3:39.82 from the prelims on Thursday. The Liberty, Mo., native put up a strong performance down the final stretch and passed four runners to finish in fourth place with another career-best time of 3:38.54. More importantly, he crossed the line one place ahead of Floridas Shane Stroup (3:38.57), while the winning time of 3:37.13 was turned in by Texas freshman Leonel Manzano. Perkins time finally placed him in UAs all-time outdoor top list at ninth, slightly ahead of former Razorback great Alistair Cragg (3:39.24). I went out hard and I felt it, Perkins said. I saw the guys from Florida (Shane Stroup) and Florida State (Tom Lancashire) and knew I had to finish ahead of them, so I gave it one last lean at the end. I haven't forgotten. Dodler is on all-time list that John Sullivan posted once and to which I have kept updating. Not that Sully hasn't. He has way more info than I and doesn't need any help. Dodler also ran a fast mile on that day too. 4:54 and some change which converts to 4:53.1 which puts her at #9. Parrish stands #6 with her 4:49.19 from NIN this past March and also has a superior 3200m/2mile time from Arcadia 10:24.01/10:27.65. She also has one year remaining and based on her training, she should be dipping below those times in upcoming post season meets. t-and-f: NCAA reports from school SID's
TN Women The day started in disappointing fashion, though, as senior Nicole Cook, the meet favorite and defending NCAA champion, struggled in the 800-meter prelims and was unable to advance to the finals. The Petersburg, Va., native, who strained her right hamstring in practice on Sunday and did not run all week in hopes of being well enough to compete, finished last of eight runners in heat two and wound up 12th overall in 2:08.25. Cook, who two weeks ago at the Southeastern Conference meet set the collegiate record in the 800m at 2:00.75 on this very track, went out conservatively before rallying on the final lap to briefly take the lead. As she made the final turn toward the finish line, however, the rest of the pack closed in and overtook her 12 meters from the tape as she was unable to find the speed and power necessary to fend them off. Aneita Denton of Arkansas, whom Cook defeated for the SEC title, advances to the finals with the fastest qualifying time at 2:04.70. It is amazing that she ran at all today, Clark said of his 10-time All-American. She didnt run a step all week and was just a warrior the whole way out there today. She did the best she could; she just couldnt open up when she wanted. It was a long shot. She warmed up and only did two strides. She said she wanted to give it a shot, and she almost pulled it off. Obviously, it hurts, because it is possibly 10 points, but were going to put our heads down and run until the meet is over. LSU Men The LSU men missed securing any points in the first day of action after an unfortunate disqualification of freshman Xavier Carter in the 200 meters. Carter clocked 20.65 to finish seventh in the finals, but was later disqualified for a lane violation. Arkansas Men The DMR immediately followed the 200-meter dash. The Arkansas team was comprised of sophomore Adam Perkins, senior Terry Gatson, junior Harun Iman and junior Said Ahmed. The Hogs ran a close race with UCLA and Stanford for a majority of the event. Perkins led from the get go with a split of 2:55, but handed off to Gatson in second place. Gatson held steady with the leading Stanford runner as he passed the baton to Iman in a time of 46.8. Iman also maintained the second place position with a split of 1:50. Ahmed handled anchor duties and continued to stay of the shoulder of the UCLA competitor. In the final lap the finish came down to defending NCAA champion Michigan and Arkansas. UMs Nate Brannen gained ground on Ahmed coming off the last turn. It was a desperate dive by Ahmed at the tape that gave Arkansas the victory with a time of 9:30.79, while the Wolverines were very close behind with a 9:30.82. The Razorbacks didnt have long to celebrate after they learned a protest regarding the physical finish had been filed by a meet referee. Arkansas put in an appeal, but it was overturned by the NCAA Track and Field Committee. The 10 points Arkansas thought it had earned with the win were taken away and Michigan was given the national crown. The University of Arkansas Distance Medley Relay team was disqualified by the referee, Donna Thomas (Chair of NCAA Division I Mens and Womens Track and Field Committee) said. The referees interpretation of the rule (Rule 5-5-3b) was that the young man from Arkansas impeded the progress of the runner from Michigan. Arkansas appealed the ruling and the ruling was upheld. No video tape was used. According to NCAA rules, the use of video is not allowed. As it stands, Michigan is the winner of the Mens Distance Medley Relay. Earlier in the evening Arkansas looked to score big in the 5,000 meters, but fell slightly short of expectations when the Hogs were only able to score five points. Junior Josphat Boit and sophomore Peter Kosgei finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Boit ran a season-best time of 13:47.99, while Kosgei turned in a 13:48.26, allowing the Kenyan duo to pick up their first-career indoor track All-America honors. In the prelims of the 800 meters senior All-American James Hatch advanced to the finals by virtue of his second-place finish. Hatch staged a smart race and recorded a time of 1:49.27, placing him seventh overall. Before the DMR Ahmed turned in the fastest qualifying time in the prelims of the mile as he held off Michigans Nick Willis (4:03.90) to take the tape with a time of 4:03.60. In the 400 meters Gatson registered a new career-best time of 46.23 as he took the tape in the fourth and final heat. His excellent time placed him second overall and pushed him through to the finals. Gatsons performance also placed him second on UAs all-time indoor top 10 list. Unfortunately, the 60-meter dash was missing junior Tyson Gay. The NCAA 100-meter dash champion was scratched from the event after it was determined that he was not 100 percent recovered from an injured right hamstring. FL Men and Women "I thought we did a pretty good job today," Florida men's coach Mike

t-and-f: NIKE Indoor National High School Track and Field Champs Preview
NIN Girls Preview by Ricky Quintana Landover, MD- This years indoor championships may have a new name, but expect the same high level of competition to torch the track at the Prince George Countys Sports and Learning Complex. Events begin on Saturday, March 12 and finish on Sunday, March 13. Comcast CN8 Sports will have 2-hours of coverage on March 20 at 9 pm and on March 26 at 3 pm. People outside the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions can see the show on the Internet at www.cn8.tv. Up to date results, stories, quotes and picutres can be found at http://nikeindoor.nationalscholastic.org/index.php Sprints 60 meter dash None of this years competitors made it past the first round in last years star studded final. This years group is tightly packed and any one of four could win the title. US # 3 55m ranked Sarah Matthews (Colorado Flyers, Longmont, CO) figures to be the top seed by a scant margin. Hot on her heels should be USATF JO YW 100m 5th placer Tenille Wilson (Foley HS, Summerdale, AL) who comes in ranked US # 4 in the 60m. Francena McCorory (Bethel TC, Hampton, VA), US #5 in the 55m, could also be vying for a top spot on the podium. Frosh Clarenchell Tate (Simon Gratz, Philadelphia, PA), ranked US #5 in the 60m, has a shot at the frosh record of 7.50 set in 1999 by Zenobia Reed (Lamar, Houston, TX). She has run a converted 60m best of 7.53 this season. 200m dash Sophomore Bianca Knight ( Ridgeland TC, Ridgeland, MS) comes in as the heavy favorite and has the accolades of a veteran. After setting a blazing best of 23.06 last summer in winning the USATF JO IG 200m championship, T& F news # 3 ranked 200m runner recorded an indoor best of 23.70A at the Simplot Games on February 19. That was good enough for 11th fastest runner of All-Time. Pretty good for someone who has only two years of experience undercover. Before the season, she said that Simplot and NIN were the two races she was pointing towards this season, so expect a sizzling performance from her in Landover. Her biggest threats will come from US # 4 Krista Simkins (Wissahickon TC, Ambler, PA), US #5 Clarenchal Tate (Simon Gratz, Phildelphia, PA) and fellow soph and US # 6, Sade Williams ( Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma, CA). The meet record of 23.78 set in 2001 by Erica Whipple (Palm Beach Lakes, West Palm Beach, FL) may be in jeopardy. Ebony Collins (Wilson, Long Beach, CA) frosh record of 24.47 could fall to Tate who has a best of 24.26 this season. 400m dash Bianca Knights (Ridgeland TC, Ridgeland, MS) efforts in the 400m last outdoor season earned her T & F News # 3 ranking. Indoors, she has yet to find her groove, but with a personal best of 52.96 set last summer, she will toe the line as the favorite. Sade Williams ( Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma, CA) finished 7th in the highly competitive CA State meet and should pose a threat to Knights sprint sweep attempt. Andria Smallwood (Ballou HS, Washington, DC) will be a strong contender also. Middle Distances/Distances 800m One of the marquee events of the meet. Last June, Sarah Bowman (Fauquier, Warrenton, VA) recorded the fastest time since 1996 in winning 800 meter run at the adidas Outdoor Championships in Raleigh, NC. Her 2:04.94 outdistanced the next best outdoor performance by more than two seconds and earned her T & F News #1 ranked 800m runner, After a tepid start to this indoor season, she set the high school track world on its ear by crushing Arianna Lambies ( Bromfield School, Harvard, Ma) US 1k record by whopping two seconds with her 2:43.40 at the Virginia State meet. Reports had her coming through the 800m in 2:08.2, the third fastest 800m time in the nation. She enters as the odds on favorite. At NIN, she will be challenged by surprising junior Katie Doswell( St. Catherines, Richmond, VA). At the same adidas Outdoor Championship meet where Bowman scorched the field, Doswell recorded a modest 2:13.4 relay split in the 4 x800m relay for her 17th place St. Catherines team. After a solid fall in cross country, Doswell has seen an alarming improvement recording bests of 2:08.86(US # 5) in the 800m and 2:47.21 (US #2). She will definitely be in the hunt. Adding spice to the field, US # 4 Geena Gall (Detroit Cheetahs TC, Flint MI) and 1k US #5 performer Brittany Sheffey (Bellport TC, Bay Shore, NY) have PRs of under 2:09.01. With 90 minutes between the mile and 800m, Doswell and Bowman will have little time to rest. The meet record of 2:09.52 set by Katya Kostetskaya (Jonesboro, AR) in 2003 could be broken if not smashed by any of the top four. The junior record of 2:06.60 by Joetta Clark (Columbia, Maplewood, NJ) and the senior record of 2:04.90 set by Tamieka Grizzle (George Washington, NYC) could also go. 1 mile Nicole Blood(Kinetic RC, Ganesvoort, NY) sped to the fastest sophomore mile time ever undercover, 4:46.13, in finishing second to Katelyn Kaltenbachs(Smoky Hill TC, Aurora, CO) meet recor

t-and-f: Ken Cormier- Lydiard influence propels him to Foot Locker National Title
By Ricky Quintana Interviewed on December 17, 2004 It seemed apropos that in the same weekend of Arthur Lydiards death, Ken Cormier of Douglas, AZ(population, 14,000) would be the one in the hunt for the title in the final 200 meters at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego, CA on Dec. 11. Cormier, the west region champion, had taken a page from the Lydiard method putting together three successive 100+ miles per week during the summer and maintaining high mileage throughout the cross country season. Using a potent finish, Cormier powered past a tiring Andrew Bumbalough, the south champion, to win the race in 15:22; just two seconds up on Bumbalough. For the second year, an unheralded newcomer had burst on to the high school distance running scene in a thrilling win. Cormiers path to success reads like a made for TV movie. After finishing a dismal 79th place finish at the West Regional, 1:26 behind the race winner, last year, Cormier vowed to win the region and the national title this year. Training in the hills around his isolated Mexican border town, the home schooled Cormier ran night in day during the summer reaching a peak of hitting a peak of 120 miles per week late in the summer. Unchallenged in Arizona during the cross country regular season, Cormier won the state championship, improving by over one minute over his junior time. He, then made due on his pledge, winning the West Region on the hilly and challenging Mt. Sac course and the national title in San Diego, CA. RQ: After finishing 79th last year at the west regional, how do you feel after reaching your goal of winning Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals? Cormier: It's kind of weird. It's been like a week. It's kind of weird to look back and say ' Wow, I did that. I won the national championship.' It feels great. I've been on cloud nine all week. I really haven't done that much. I've been happy all the time no matter what. RQ: When you were coming back that last 200 or so and you were behind Andrew Bumbalough, what were you thinking? Cormier: When I started my kick, 200 meters out, I felt that I was going to win it. I felt so strong and I was feeling so fast. I just thought I was going to win that final 200 meters. I just felt I could out kick him. It was kind of weird. When you start to run really fast in competition, you just kind of black out for a while. It started to come to me and I was like ' Wow, I won.' What was going through my mind was ' I could do this. It's just right there.' RQ: When you were coming down the final 200m, you kind of drifted over. Do you and Andrew collide at all? Cormier: On no. I really felt I was in front of him. You have to veer off the right to get to the finish line. I really didn't feel like running a whole lot of distance. I felt like I was ahead of him. I saw the tape and I was. I moved to the inside because I knew it was the shortest distance. I had made that decision the day before when I was looking at the course. It would almost be a straight line to the finish. RQ: It seems that you didn't have that much competition during the course of the year. Cormier: No, I didn't here in Arizona. I think my closest race was like 22 seconds. In a way that was good. It really helped me to build up my confidence. I would have liked to have run some faster races in my season. I probably would have run faster at nationals. It would have been just a better run. But you know, it's just something you have to live with. RQ: What were you thoughts going into the West regional not having raced against some of these kids? Cormier: Going into the West regional, I knew I could qualify. That was my only goal. That was undoubtedly the best I ever felt during a race. Ever. When we hit two miles, I felt like we were jogging. I was so controlled. I just felt so good. So that race really really helped my confidence for nationals. RQ: What were your PR's in track? Cormier: 9:20 and 4:18. RQ: Were those at altitude? Cormier: No, those were actually at 1,000 feet. I was sick when I ran those though. I was sick at my state meet. Actually, my 4:18 came two weeks into the track season. And then at state, I got really sick and I had to drop all my races except the 3200m. I ran 9:20. RQ: I guess there were no post season races for you. Cormier: No, no post season races. RQ: What were your cross country PR's last year? Cormier: I think I ran 16:18 on basically the same state course. This year, I ran 15:10. I think I took off about a minute for 5k from last year. RQ: Did you have an opportunity to see last year's race? Cormier: Friday afternoon, me and a bunch of other guys watched the tapes from 2000 to last year. RQ: Did you have any flashback's to last year's race? Cormier: Yeah, it was kind of like that. Withrow and me weren't expected to win so it was kind of the same thing again. RQ: You're

t-and-f: George Kersh Interview
In 1987, George Kersh dominated the high school 800m. The lanky senior from Pearl, MS broke the national high school record twice finally lowering the 800m to a then best of 1:46.58. His 0.73 second lowering of the record is the largest margin listed in Jack Shepards 2004 high school track annual that dates back to 1963. Kersh still owns 4 of the top ten 800m All-Time performances (his slowest being 1:47.84) from that season. From 1987 to 1994, he earned 7 US top ten 800m rankings; his highest ranking being 2nd in 1990 in 1991. His best of 1:44.00 set on June 24,1992 in New Orleans at the Olympic trials ranks him 11th among Americans All-Time. In that race, Kersh finished a heartbreaking 4th behind Johnny Gray (1:42.80), Mark Everett (1:43.67) and Jose Parilla(1:43.97) to just miss a trip to Barcelona, Spain. Now 35 (Almost 36. July 3, 1968 birthdate), Kersh is an assistant coach at his alma mater, Pearl, MS. Kershs former coach, Woody Barnett, has amassed a dynasty there, accumulating a staggering 5 state titles and going undefeated against Mississippi competition since 1999. The team also boasts 100 members, grades 7-12, including Kershs son, a seventh grader last year. He spoke during one of the rain delays at the Golden South Classic in Orlando, June 5. One of his track stars, Raymond Newell won the high jump there with a clearance of 6-08. Kersh still holds the Golden South mile record of 4:08.91 set in 1987. RQ: What have you been up to all these years? Kersh: Nothing much. Doing a little coaching. Doing a little running. Nothing major. Just running with my cross country and a few of my track kids. Thats about it. RQ: You ended up back in your hometown, Pearl, MS. Kersh: Oh yeah. Yeah. Back home. I have a family. Ive been married for several years. I have a twelve year old son and an eight year old daughter. Im enjoying being a father and my family. Im slowly getting them involved with running. Thats what Ive been doing. RQ: Any potential in your kids? Kersh: Maybe. You never know. My son is a jack of all trades. He can pretty much do anything. He had a pretty successful cross country season as a seventh grader. He did a pretty good job for his first time running. Hopefully, my girl will do some running in the near future. Slowly, trying to get them there. Not a rush. Im letting them enjoy themselves also. RQ: What kind of times did your son run last season? Kersh: He ran 19:08 for 5k. Not bad for a seventh grader. We were pleased with it. He was always one of the top guys on the junior varsity. He was always there. He gets after it and works hard so you never know. You just never know. Im just going to work with him every year and hopefully, hell become a good runner. RQ: What do you try and tell these younger kids? Kersh: Oh man . I tell you what, focus. Stay focused and dedicate yourself to the sport. If you want to be successful, you got to dedicate yourself. Theres going to be some ups and downs and you have to take the good with the bad. Thats basically it. You have to stay strong. You may not have a successful year the first year, but if you hang with it, youre going to have some good races. Those good races are going to outweigh the bad by far. So just hang in there, knowing you are going to do well. RQ: You must be a household name in Pearl. Do these kids know who you are? Kersh: Yeah, they do. They do (laughing). We show them a few tapes and these kids, they dont remember. Most werent even born when I was running. Well go and show them some tapes when I was running. Their eyes will pop. Theyre shocked. I get out there and run with them and they say, Ok, he can still run. RQ: What got you back to Pearl? Kersh: I was out in Santa Monica and I just missed home. I went back and trained a little bit. I ran for a couple of more years. My coach got me out there to help the Pearl team a little bit. I got the hang of it and started to loving it. I got on and have been on it ever since. Its been wonderful to get out there and run with the kids and see them develop year after year and get faster and faster. Just try and motivate them and teach them a few things. As a matter of fact, for cross country next year, just in the junior high alone, we have 80 to 90 signed up. We had a lot of runners last year and we only lost about 5 guys. Keep them motivated and keep it fun. Do things for them and hopefully keep building. We won the state cross country meet this year, both boys and girls and also won the boys track. We had an outstanding track and cross country season this year. RQ: As an African American male, do you carry a different perspective into cross country and distance running that you can share with the kids? Kersh: With the distance runners, you dont get many blacks out. We do get a few of them out. Especially junior high kids. Well slowly get them out. They see that its for everybody. Anybody can do it, if

t-and-f: Adidas Outdoor Championships Girls Preview-Distances
Adidas Outdoor Championships Raleigh, NC- The girls distances are certain to be a highlight as a bevy of nationally ranked middle distance and distance athletes descend on Raleigh, N.C. for 16th addition of Adidas Outdoor Championships at Paul Derr Track on the North Carolina State University campus June 18 and 19th. Heres an event by event preview of each of the distance races. Girls 800m Last year, North Carolinian, Mackenzie Pierce(Pfafftown, NC) was set to race Russian exchange student, Katya Kostetskaya(Jonesboro, AR) and the long legged and super fast Heidi Magill(Mountain View, UT) in one of the most anticipated match-ups of the meet. But, as luck would have it, Pierce slipped and suffered an injury to her knee that required stitches. The 6-0 junior has since recovered taking second at the NIKE Indoor Championships. She also led her high school team to a runner-up finish by posting wins in the 200m, 25.51, 400m, 56.49, 800m, 2:20.77, and the 1600m, 5:12.48 at the NCISA 3A State championships in a two hour span. She enters with the fastest time, 2:06.97, of all the entrants. At the Golden West Invitational this past weekend, Pierce did not finish. Her main challengers will be the following: Sarah Bowman(Fauquier, Warrenton, VA) posted a quick 2:07.69 at the Taco Bell Classic which ranks her second among the 800m entrants. Bowman has shown a good turn of speed for a miler and should be able to match the towering Pierce. Geena Gall(Grand Blanc, Detroit, MI) posted a come from behind win over Pierce at this past winters NIKE Indoor Championships. Gall, a junior who is an all-conference point guard and honor roll student, has since won the Div I 800m title in an all division state record time of 2:08.00. Janine Davis( Queen of Peace, North Arlington, NJ) won the NJ ALL-Group championships in her best time of the season, 2:07.82. She finished 11th at last years AOC. Girls Mile One week prior to AOC mile final, several of the entrants produced some tremendous times swelling the field and lifting the girls field status to the BEST ALL-TIME girls mile. In what has been an incredible year, a staggering 27 girls have run under 4:50 for the 1600m in the indoor and outdoor seasons(using 1500m, 1600m, and mile conversions). That number is the most ever and surpasses the previous high of 13 in 1998 according to track and field girls high school pundit, Mike Kennedy. 15 of those girls are currently entered in the AOC mile. The meet record of 4:39.05 set by Ari Lambie(Bromfeld, Harvard, MA)will get a test from a field like none other. The list of 15 under 4:50 are as follows: Katelyn Kaltenbach(Smoky Hill, Aurora, CO.)- Arguably the best distance runner in the nation was handed her first defeat, cross country or track, of the year by Texas state champion Erin Bedell(Plano West, TX) at the Golden West Invitational. Her time of 4:45.97 for the mile is an outdoor best and is the fastest of all the entrants. Kaltenbach has been nearly unbeatable traveling posting wins that include The 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, the NIKE Indoor Championships mile(meet record time of 4:45.32), The Arcadia Invitational. She has also won the state cross country championships and four state track titles this season. For her achievements this past fall, Kaltenbach, only a junior, was awarded the named the Sportswomen of Colorado 2003 Sportswomen of the Year on March 14, flying from Landover, MD after her mile victory to Colorado for the awards ceremony that evening. Caitlin Chock (Roseville, CA)- Chock ran to the US#3 All-Time performance for 3200m, 9:58.51, to run away from a select field at the Golden West Invitational, June 12. She also has posted US#2 time of 4:25.01 for 1500m earlier this track season. Chock, a Foot Locker National finalist in 2002, has rebounded stronger than ever after much publicized bout with an eating disorder. She won the Div II California cross country championships, but decided not to run for her team, Granite Bay, this track season. Chock will attend the University of Richmond next year. Nicole Blood (Saratoga Springs, NY)- Blood posted the leading time in the country in the 3,000m in winning the NYSPHSAA title on June 3 in 9:24.03. Bloods only loss this track season was to Kaltenbach in the mile at the NIKE Indoor Championships. There she ran all-time sophomore indoor record of 4:46.13. Francis Koons(Central Catholic, Allentown, PA) ran to a 3rd place finish a the very fast Golden West Invitational mile on June 12. Her time of 4:47.90(4:46.34c) improved upon her 1600m best of 4:48.78 at the Class 2A state championships by 2.44 seconds. The Villanova signee finished 24th in last years mile race. Alicia Follmar, Saratoga HS(Saratoga, CA)- Follmar clocked an impressive 4:46.47 to win the California state championships June 5 against a very tough field. Her come from behind victory was good enough to get her a second consecu
t-and-f: Adidas Outdoor Championship Preview- Hurdles
Adidas Outdoor Championships by Ricky Quintana Raleigh, NC- The girls hurdle races will have plenty of competition as some of the nations top ranked hurdlers vie for the national high school championship title at the Adidas Outdoor Championships at Paul Derr Track on the North Carolina State University campus June 18 and 19th. Heres an event by event preview of each of the hurdle races. 100m Girls Hurdles The 100m hurdles will bring together the three of the top six hurdlers in the country. Florida seems to be the hotbed for hurdling this year and the two leaders will meet for the fourth time this season. A few Texans are entered for good measure. Shantia Moss(Pompano Beach,FL)- Moss finished the season undefeated in the 100m hurdles, but a stumble in the 300m hurdles at the Great Southwest has left her slightly injured. She still has had a dominant season, winning the 60m hurdles at the NIKE Indoor Championships, the Florida Relays and 2A Florida state championships where she set a state meet record of 13.53. She has pinned three losses against Florida rival and second fastest hurdler in the nation, PaviElle James (Northwestern, Miami, FL), and at the Great Southwest lowered the national leading time to 13.51. Last year, she was runner-up.. PaviElle James(Northwestern, Miami, FL)- James won the 4A state title for the second year in a row with a state meet record tying 13.53. The diminutive junior will have one more year to lower the state record. James finished 5th last year at AOC and then went on to finish 6th at the World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada. Jessica Ohanaja(Westbury, Houston, TX)-Ohanja placed 4th at the Texas 5A state championships in a time of 14.10. She has a best of 13.85 this year. The Louisiana State signee finished 8th in last years final. LeeAndrea Robinson(Kimball, Dallas, TX)- Robinson,a junior, won the Texas 4A state championship in a season best time of 13.66 which is US#5. She finished 3rd at the Great Southwest. April Williams(Skyline, Dallas, TX)- The frosh lived up to her billing taking 3rd at the Texas 5A state championships. At the Great Southwest Classic, she DNFed. 400m Hurdles In the rarely run 400m hurdles, it is often unpredicted how high schoolers can handle the additional 100m of hurdles. With only one runner entered at under 60 seconds, this race could be wide open. The top entrants are: Selena Sappleton(AP Randolph,NY)- Pittsburgh bound Sappleton finished 5th in time of 1:01.53 at the prestigious Penn Relays. She improved on that time twice at the NYSPHSAA to win in a personal best of 58.94. That time is the fastest of all the entrants and the second fastest time in the nation. Lizzie Harris(Northwestern, Miami, FL)- Frosh Harris came up big placing 2nd at the Florida 4A state championships in a time of 42.58. Krystal Cantey(Winslow Township,Sickersville, NJ)- Sophomore Cantey placed second in both the group championships and the All Group Championships. Her best time this season was a 60.97. She finished 7th last year. Deandra Doyley(Ft. Lauderdale HS,Coral Springs, FL)- Doyley ran a quick 42.58 to finish 2nd in the Florida 3A state championships. Doyley will have less duties required by running for team. That should leave the sophomore well rested and able to challenge for All-American. Adidas Outdoor Championships By Ricky Quintana Raleigh, NC- The girls sprints will provide plenty of entertainment as athletes vie for the national high school championship title at the adidas Outdoor Championships at Paul Derr Track on the North Carolina State University campus June 18 and 19th. Heres an event by event preview of each of the sprint races. 100m Dash Alex the Great and Speedy will be the headliners for what promises to be a meet record-threatening race. Three of the top four nationally ranked 100m sprinters will be on hand to earn the coveted national championship ring given to all the adidas Outdoor Champions. World Junior 400m record holder, Texas and Olympic team favorite, Sanya Richards(St. Thomas Aquinas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) set the record of 11.39 in 2002. Heres a listing of the top competitors. Alexandria Anderson( Morgan Park, Chicago, IL) got her moniker after splendid quadruple performance at the Illinois Class 2A state championships. There she recorded wins in the in the 100m, 11.41, a 24.11 in the 200m, a 53.13 in the 400m, and finished runner-up in the long jump, 19 feet 11 inches. In all, the junior has collected 9 state championships and two runner-ups. She will be focusing on just two events here, the 100m and the 200m. She has bests of 11.14 and 23.74 in those two events. Ranking: US#3tie Shalonda Solomon (Poly, Long Beach, CA) will be looking for that elusive individual title that escaped her at the California state championships last weekend. Hard sprinting Speedy has a best of 11.41 this season and a best of 11.35. She will have no relay chores at the AOC which should improve her prospects drastically. This will also be the first appearance at AOC for the coast hopping Solomon. College Choice: University of South Carolina Ranking: US #3 tie Cleo Tyson(Huntsville, TX) has finished second in each of her two past championship races. She was runner-up at the TX 5A state meet to Krystin Lacy(Skyline, Dallas, TX) and runner-up to national leading Ashley Owens( Liberty, Colorado Springs, CO) at the Great Southwest Championships in Albuquerque, NM June 5. The University of Tennessee signee will try and reverse that trend at AOC. Ranking: US #5 2003 AOC Finish: 4th Courtney Champion( Collins Hill, Suwanee, GA) won her fourth straight championship in the 200m at the GA State championships. This despite a hamstring and groin injuries that plagued her in the early part of the season. She also won the 100m in a quick 11.53. In all, she collected 6 individual titles in her career and just missed completing the 100m/200m 4 time double sweep after placing 2nd in the 100m her freshman and sophomore years. College Choice: University of Tennessee Girls 200m Almost an identical line-up as the 100m, but with some added spice. The only missing entrant from last years final is the winner, Shana Cox. The meet record is 23.03, again held by Sanya Richards. This surely will be threatened as three of the top five nationally ranked runners are entered. Shalonda Solomon( Poly, Long Beach, CA) enters with the best time after her sizzling 22.92 runner-up at the California State Championships. It was an improvement over last years time by a scant 0.01. Rank US #2 Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, TX) sped to an all time best of 23.36 behind Ashley Owens at the Great Southwest Classis June 5. At the Texas 4A state meet she won both the 100m and 200m titles in scorching times, 11.51 and 23.41(which broke an 8 year old state record). It was the second year in a row that she completed the trick. Tyson earned the bronze medal at the World Youth Championships last summer in Sherbrooke, Canada. Ranking US # 4 2003 AOC : 3rd Alexandria Anderson( Morgan Park,Chicago, IL) best in the 200m, 23.48, was set last summer at the USATF Junior Olympics in hot Miami. Her best FAT(Fully automatic time) this season, 24.11, was set while competing in 4 events. With less events to compete in, she should improve on last years 6th place AOC finish. Krystin Lacy(Skyline , Dallas, TX) won the Texas state championship with a sizzling 23.45. It was the third state individual title for the junior in sprint deep Texas. The 200m will be the only individual event Lacy will run at AOC which should make a difference for last years 5th placer. Courtney Champion (Collins Hill, Suwanee, GA) earned her 4th straight title in the 200m running 23.84. Last years AOC runner-up has improved to 23.44 this season, a .09 improvement. Champion earned the silver medal at the World Youth Championships last summer in Sherbrooke, Canada. Bianca Knight( Ridgeland, Pearl, MS) claimed her 8th individual state titles by posting an impressive 11.56, 23.98, and 55.63 for her new school, Ridgeland and helped them win the Mississippi 4A state team championship. After a long layoff, Knight, only a freshman, posted a 3rd place finish in the 100m, 11.82 and a 2nd place finish in the 400m
t-and-f: Katelyn Kaltenbach Aiming for Great Times this Weekend at AOC
Kaltenbach Aiming for Great Times this Weekend by Ricky Quintana June 14, 2004 This past weekend at the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento, CA, Katelyn Kaltenbach (Smoky Hill, Aurora, CO.), was handed her first defeat in 51 weeks by Texas state mile champion Erin Bedell(Plano West, TX). Her time of 4:45.97 for the mile was her outdoor best and came despite slowing the final 10 meters because of leg cramps. Kaltenbach has been nearly unbeatable this season posting wins over the best high schoolers at the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, the NIKE Indoor Championships mile (meet record time of 4:45.32), and Arcadia Invitational. She also won her first state cross country championship and four state track titles at the Colorado State championships. She will be competing in the two-mile and mile at the Adidas Outdoor Championships in Raleigh, N.C. this weeeknd. The Adidas Outdoor Championship serve as the unofficial national high school championships and will feature one of the strongest fields in the history of girls distance running. The two mile will be contested on Friday evening and the mile on Saturday afternoon. Kaltenbach spoke Monday night on her chances in each of the two events, her training and her loss this past weekend. RQ: How did Golden West go for you? Kaltenbach: It was OK. I got overheated though. It wasnt too good. I felt really strong throughout the race. My breathing felt great. Then, when I went at 200 meters and I started closing on Erin [Bedell]. Then, with 100 meters left, my hamstrings cramped. Actually, I pretty much walked the last ten meters or so. I figured out what happened afterwards. I wasnt hydrated. Normally when I run mile races in Colorado, I dont need to hydrate much, but with the intense heat, I need to learn to hydrate more. It was a good experience to not run well and still run 4:45. It just shows that Im on the right track. RQ: Its been a long time since you lost. Is that something that you think about? Kaltenbach: Yes. I always thought it was cool to keep winning, but I knew I was going to lose sometime. My coach figured its been 51 weeks since I lost [Last loss was at last years AOC where she placed 4th]. Hopefully, Ill have another 51 week streak. RQ: Its been a long time since youve raced. Kaltenbach: Yes, it has. Its been about three to four weeks. Ill probably be ready for this weekend. RQ: What is going to be your focus for this weekend? Kaltenbach: I know both fields are really good. In the two mile, I just want to go out and try to win. In the mile, Im just hoping to get a really good time. Ill see how I feel after the two mile to see how I race. See how my legs feel after the two mile. RQ: Youve committed to full time running this year. How has that gone? Kaltenbach: I love it. Its obviously helped a lot. Ive run a lot better times than I would have. I won four events at states which is exciting. So its going great. I love it and Im used to it now. RQ: Do you still get inklings to play soccer? Kaltenbach: Not really anymore. Im over soccer. RQ: How has the season gone for you? Are you happy with it? Kaltenbach: Im really happy. Its been a really good season. I got my 800m time down to 2:09 so that was exciting. I won the four state titles which was a big goal. I got some school records that I was going for. Its been great. RQ: So, you got one of your sisters[Megan Kaltenbach who is now a freshman at North Carolina] school records? Kaltenbach: Yeah, I got her 800m school record which I was going for because at the beginning of the season, I was running 2:12. I hadnt really run an 800m fresh. I got to [run fresh] at my region race and I ended up running 2:09.01. RQ: What kind of workouts have you been doing? Youve run two miles and miles. Thats a pretty good range. Kaltenbach: I know. Thats been kind of crazy. I wasnt really planning on running a 5k at the Penn Relays. I got the opportunity so I kind of just did it. Ive just been doing two speed workouts a week. One has been longer intervals and the other one has been shorter, like 300s and 200s just to keep my speed up. Then, once every other week, Ill do a long run. RQ: So, what kind of mileage are you putting in? Kaltenbach: The thing is, I dont know the exact mileage because I run minutes, not miles. My coach does everything. Probably like 35 miles per week. Its going down because its the end of the season. RQ: What kind of times do you run in the workouts? Kaltenbach: Like, last week, I was doing 600s. I was going through the quarter in like 63. I was running 1:36s. And then I do 200s. I do two sets of four. My first set, Ill average 30 and then the following set Ill average 28. Normally, throughout the workout, I get faster. RQ: Have you eve done an all out 200 or 400? Kaltenbach: No, I really havent this year. Next year, Im going to do some open quarters because in that practice

Girls Mile at the Adidas Outdoor Championship to feature one the best fields ever. By Ricky Quintana Copyright- National Scholastic Sports Foundation Raleigh, NC- 10 state champions. 10 runners under 4:49.74 seconds for the 1600m. 5 of the top eight nationally ranked milers in the nation. Those are just some of the credentials of one of the deepest girls mile fields in high school history. The winner will be decided on June 19 at the Adidas Outdoor Championships at Paul Derr Track on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. The two day event that begins on June 18th is in its fourteenth year and will feature some of the best high school track and field athletes in the nation. Leading the way will be Katelyn Kaltenbach of Smoky Hill High in Aurora, CO., arguably the best distance runner in the nation. The 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Champion has continued to roll this track season winning the NIKE Indoor mile in a meet record time of 4:45.32(the best mile time indoor and outdoors) and collecting her fourth state track title at the Colorado State high school track and field championships. Kaltenbach who's racing schedule has had her compete on each coast, has not lost all year long, cross country or track. For her achievements this past fall, Kaltenbach, only a junior, was awarded the named the Sportswomen of Colorado 2003 Sportswomen of the Year on March 14, flying from Landover, MD after her mile victory to Colorado for the awards ceremony that evening. The field will be tough though. Any one of the several of the nation's top middle distance runners could win the title. They include: Alicia Follmar, Saratoga HS(Saratoga, CA)- Follmar clocked an impressive 4:46.47 to win the California state championships June 5 against a very tough field. Her come from behind victory was good enough to get her a second consecutive state title. Her outdoor 1600m time is the best among the entrants. Sarah Bowman, Fauquier(Warrenton, VA)- Bowman ran away from the field at the Penn Relays this season to clock the seasons fastest mile time of 4:48.55. She owns the 4th fastest time in the nation in the 800m, 2:07.69 and the fastest 1500m time, 4:23.8, in the nation. At the VA state championships, the versatile Bowman led her team to the runner-up trophy by winning the mile in 4:51.11(a state record), the 800m in 2:10.44(a state record), placing 2nd in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet 3 inches and running a leg on the 4 x 400m championship team. Since her surprise victory in the mile at the 2003 NIC Championships, Bowman has suffered ailments that have left her below par the past two championships. A sore back kept her from defending her NIC mile title this year(11th place) and at last years AOC(16th place), sickness kept her from performing at her best. Shes on schedule to reverse that trend this year. Jennifer Barringer, Oviedo, FL- Barringer has emerged as one fot he top distance runners this year. At the FL 4A state championships on May 9, she set two state meet records, 4:48.90 for the 1600m and 10:35.36 for the 3200m. On May 22, she ran a personal best of 4:49.01 for the mile; the best time ever for the distance in Florida history. She also finished 3rd at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego in December. A front runner, Barringer will be sure to make the pace quick. Maggie Infeld, Beaumont(Cleveland Heights, OH)- This year, Ohio is nations girls miling hotbed and Infeld is the best of the lot. Infeld set the state meet record with her 4:47.79 in the Division I championships. She also ran 2:10.83 to win the 800m title. It was the third time she has won both. Infeld is the top returnee after last years 3rd place finish, 4:51.86. A very tenacious competitor, count on her to be there late. Shell run for the Georgetown Hoyas next year. Magin Kebert, West Lafayette, IN- Kebert finished third behind open runners at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN on May 7. Her time of 4:27.94 ranks her 3rd nationally. Kebert did not compete for her high school this year. A North Carolina State signee, shell be running on her future home track. Jacqueline Areson, Pope John Paul II(Boca Raton, FL)- The fastest soph in the field posted a best of 4:49.53 using a stinging kick to nearly hand Jenny Barringer her first defeat on the track this season. She was disqualified from the 1600m at her region meet for a uniform violation, but qualified and eventually won the 800m at the Florida 2A state championships. She placed 5th at the NIKE indoor Championships in time of 4:55.37. Areson ran 5:07 last year for the 1600m and is possibly the most improved runner in the nation. Her late quick finishes may surprise so keep an eye on her. Sunni Olding, Minster, OH- The Notre Dame signee and the defending AOC two mile champ won the Div. III (smallest schools) state championship in a fast
t-and-f: Golden South Preview- Fast 800's and girls sprints
By Ricky Quintana Last years Golden South had a smattering of top performances. This years should be no different as some of the best in the nation gather on the speedy Payne Stewart Complexs MONDO track in Orlando, FL. Girls Highlights 100m Frosh Bianca Knight (Ridgeland, MS) was just nipped at the line at last years champs by senior Juanita Broaddus( William Penn, Philadelphia, PA). On May 7-8, Knight claimed her 8th individual state titles by posting an impressive 11.56, 23.98, and 55.63 for her new school, Ridgeland and helped them win the Mississippi 4A state team championship. Local, Lauren Austin(Orlando, Oak Ridge) will provide a challenge after winning the FL state title in the 100m in a personal best of 11.68. She also tripled at state posting marks of 24.20(2nd) and 54.36(1st). 400m dasher, Natasha Hastings(Randolph, NY), and BAYTF winner (11.86) Tianna Fisher(FL Elite) should also complete a solid field. 200m Junior Britney Wilson(Orlando, Oak Ridge) blasted to the only sub 24 performance of the Florida State meets with her 23.98 to win the 4A state title. UM bound teammate, Lauren Austin(Orlando, Oak Ridge) has improved her speed this season and managed a PR of 24.20; possibly the result of her 5th place finish(145 pound bench/175 pound clean) in 154 pound class at the state weightlifting championships, February 7. 3A FL state champion and sophomore, Galyn Iloka (Rockledge,FL) posted a quick 24.39 into a 1.0m headwind and should be even quicker on the ultra quick Payne Stewart track. 400m Some young guns, froshes Bianca Knight (Ridgeland, MS) and Devon Williams (Towson Catholic, Baltimore, MD) will challenge USA World Indoor Team member, and University of South Carolina signee, Natasha Hastings(AP Randolph, NY) in the 400m. Hastings posted a best of 52.09 at the USATF Junior Champs in 2003 to finish 3rd. Bianca Knights best is 53.81 set last summer . Wunderkind, Devon Williams ran a national indoor record of 1:11.53 for 500m this past indoor season and as well as a US #1 in the 800m(2:06.48), and a US #2 in the mile, 4:50.76 for the mile. Williams also beat Hastings in setting the 500m record. This should be an amazing competition. 800m Arcadia Invite winner and sophomore, Latavia Thomas (West Catholic, PA) posted an outdoor season best of 2:07.21, the US#3 time. Devon Williams ran a 2:06.48 indoors;a US#1. Lavera Morris(Orlando Oak Ridge) ran a FL state meet record setting time of 2:09.90 to win the state championships. She preceeded that with a 5:03.76, 1600m 2nd place finish. The additional rest should help her in her quest to repeat as champion. 5A GA state champion, SW Deklabs (Powder Springs, GA)Brittany Robbins(2:12.41PR), 1A FL State Champion, soph, Danielle Bradley(Kings Academy), 2A 1600m/3200m FL State Champion, junior Nicole Schappert(Boca Raton, Pope John Paul II), 2:10.89 performer, senior Alondra Cooper( Suncoast, FL), 2:13.54 performer, and Jessica Smith( Harrison, Powder Springs, GA) complete a very deep fast field. 400mH Nicole Leach( AP Randolph, NY) is the class of the field after setting the Penn relays record and US#11 time of 57.84 on April 22. Two others could also challenge the sub 60-second barrier; Holly Hardy (Anderson, SC) 1:04.35 and Rokesha Williams( Towson Catholic, Batlimor,e MD), 62. 3000m Jenny Barringer(Oviedo, FL) will tune up for AOC championships with a 3000m effort. Barringer posted a US#2 time, 4:49.01, in the mile on May 22. Her best this season in the 3200m, 10:35.21, a FL state meet record setting time, came after a 4:48.90 FL state meet record time in the 1600m. She should be fresh and shell need it to get the national leading 9:27.4 run by Nicole Blood in the NY sectionals last week. Barringers 3200m best, 10:18.84, is equivalent to the 9:37.60. Anissa Angeosante(Kingsland, TX ), Jacy Kruzel(Cooper City, FL) and Amanda Hahn(Gainesville, FL) should also make for a fairly deep competition. LJ Four 18+ footers will be looking to g beyond 19 feet. Surprise 4A FL state champion(18-07.75), Zurina Suluki Drakes( Colonial, Orlando, FL) will get challenge from 3A FL state champion(18-06.75) Deandra Doyley ( Ft. Lauderdale, FL), 18-08.5 performer, Jenna Utecht(St. Thomas Aquinas, Ft. Luaderdale, FL) and unknown quantity, Taniesha Brangman (Pembroke Pines, FL) who has entered at 18-8. 100mH Clemson signee, Polly Hardy has posted a quick 13.77 at her region meet. Her next best times are 14.02, 14.23, and 14.41. 3A FL state champion, Jenna Utrecht(St. Thomas Aquinas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL). 14.18 performer, Simone Clark (Rickards, Tallahassee, FL), and Holly Hardy9Anderson, SC), a 14.58 performer and Wallace State signee will make the field very competitive. SP Discus Senior Misti Barber( Miami,Carol City) set a state meet record of 49-09.75 to break Olympian Seilala Suas 1996 state meet mark of 49-05.25 May 8. She also came back to win the discus with a platter toss of 152-05

I ask him if running the 20.49 (FAT) last week at the AAU Qualifier in Orlando (at First Academy) made him want to run. He said yeah, but it's time to get into the LSU summer football program and summer school. He said LSU told him he needed to put on some weight for football. I asked if that would affect his speed. t-and-f: Anti-Doping Agency Enters a Gray Area By JERE LONGMAN
May 27, 2004 NEWS ANALYSIS Anti-Doping Agency Enters a Gray Area By JERE LONGMAN SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 - When the United States Anti-Doping Agency was created in October 2000 to oversee drug testing in Olympic sports, it was largely hailed as an independent body that would aggressively nab cheaters and dampen international allegations of foot-dragging or cover-ups on the part of American officials. Four years later, the anti-doping agency is treading new ground in the Balco steroids case - trying to bar athletes if sufficient evidence indicates that they have used banned substances, even if they have not failed a conventional drug test. With the Olympic track trials set to begin July 9, and the Athens Olympics to start Aug. 13, this novel effort to ensnare cheaters is being tested under tremendous time constraints, in a high-pressure atmosphere where questions of fairness, evidentiary proof and due process will be fiercely debated. Already, some harsh if unintended consequences have been created, lawyers and anti-doping experts say. The reputation of track and field, the showcase event of the Summer Olympics, has suffered greatly, they say, as has the reputation of Marion Jones, the Olympic sprint champion, who is being investigated but has not been formally accused of doping and has repeatedly said that she does not take banned substances. "Marion's in a terrible position," said Jim Coleman, senior associate dean of the Duke law school, who has both prosecuted and defended athletes in doping cases. "I think her reputation has been destroyed." No one is arguing against making track and field as clean as possible. But in the coming weeks, the anti-doping agency will essentially face a referendum on the legitimacy of its own actions, just as some athletes will potentially face judgment before the agency and the arbitrators on the legitimacy of their own performances. "This seems to be headed quickly for a confrontation on the appropriateness of potentially disqualifying athletes who have not had a positive test," said Edward Williams, a New York lawyer who represents several athletes on Balco-related issues. The anti-doping agency has not said whether it will seek to bar Jones from the Olympics. If it does, its case would be based, in part, on documentary evidence obtained in a file bearing her name taken from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. The lab was raided last September by federal authorities, who recently turned over documents to the Senate Commerce Committee, which gave them to the anti-doping agency. On Wednesday, Joseph Burton, a lawyer with the San Francisco firm of Duane Morris who represents Jones, called for the anti-doping agency to make a quick decision about Jones, one he believes should be a public exoneration. "I think it's unfair to let her twist in the wind in a public way," Burton said. "I think it's bad for track and field in general to have this negative atmosphere surrounding one of the most important people in the sport, shortly before the most important event in the sport." Officials of the anti-doping agency have declined to speak publicly about Jones or any other athlete, except to say they are acting appropriately and fairly. Dick Pound, chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency, praised the American agency, saying, "For the first time in many, many years, the U.S. is taking a leadership role in this fight." The legal and public-relations team representing Jones has taken an aggressive public stance, threatening to sue if she is barred from the Olympics on any evidence short of a failed drug test. Jones's representatives asked for a meeting with anti-doping officials, which occurred Monday. Burton then criticized the evidence provided them by the American anti-doping agency as feeble and far below the standard of beyond a reasonable doubt that is being used to disqualify athletes who have not failed a drug test. "So far, he's doing an excellent P.R. job," David Ulich, a Los Angeles lawyer familiar with doping cases, said of Burton. "I think he's putting U.S.A.D.A. on the defensive. He's making such convincing statements to the press regarding the lack of evidence, U.S.A.D.A. would have to come out with something determinative." Others have questioned whether Jones's lawyers should have shown to reporters the evidence given to them by the anti-doping agency. Her representatives said they preferred making the documents public on their own terms, rather than hazard the possibility that they would be leaked by others. The risk, some lawyers said, is that this attempt to clear Jones's name might have increased the level of suspicion about her. "It permits the public to speculate that documents refer to her and somehow may indicate steroids she took," Coleman said. "No matter what comes out later, some people will believe she committed a doping violation and everything she accomplished is a fraud. That's too bad." Documents shown

He was 71. The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Jean, said. Woodley's athletes who won Olympic gold medals included Paul Drayton, Steve Riddick, Charlie Greene, Mel Pender, Herman Frazier and Hasely Crawford. Other leading athletes from the club included John Carlos, Ivory Crockett, Curtis Mills, Edwin Roberts, Tom McLean and Benn Fields. In an era when meet directors often gave modest appearance fees, which were illegal, to white track and field athletes, few black athletes so benefited. Riddick said Woodley changed that. "In 1973," Riddick said by telephone, "seven or eight of us from the club were spending the summer running in Europe." "We were just getting by on expense money," he said. "At the Bislett Games in Norway, Alex told them we wouldn't run unless we got $1,000 apiece. We got it. We gave him 10 percent, and all of us had a little money in our pockets. It was the first time I was ever paid to run." Alexander Jiminez Woodley was born April 30, 1933, in Philadelphia. He earned a degree in biology from La Salle University, where he was a premed student and journeyman high jumper. Later, he coached the Pioneer Club team, which did not pay him a salary. He taught English and African-American studies at a high school from 1963 to 1996. He is survived by his second wife, the former Jean Dicks; two sons, Alexander III of Dallas and Jeffrey of New York; two daughters, Dr. Aminta Breaux of North Wales, Pa., and Alicia Woodley of Philadelphia; two brothers, Fernando of Philadelphia and Dr. William Rodgers of Blue Bell, Pa.; two sisters, Aminta Burnett and Micalena Carter, both of Philadelphia; his mother, Micaela Woodley, of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In 1980, Woodley told The Philadelphia Bulletin about a lesson in life in 1950, when he was a freshman in college. When the La Salle track team arrived in Baltimore for a meet, the white athletes went to a hotel and Woodley and other black athletes were sent to private homes. "Was I that different?" Woodley recalled thinking. "Did they have to separate me from that group? Would I taint somebody? Afterward I wanted to make sure that this never happened to a kid. It's been my life's work. I'd probably be a millionaire right now if I'd put these hours in private business." _ MSN Toolbar provides one-click access to Hotmail from any Web page FREE download! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200413ave/direct/01/

" I finished and then Jackie comes in right after me." " My coach says I need to work on drifting out to the 2nd and 3rd lanes in the final staright," she says with a laugh. " I don't know where that came from," Areson says of her finish. " I didn't go out with them because it was way too fast."
