RE: Off topic, pdf documents, WE 9? shshsh, maybe the owners won't know!

2015-03-04 Thread via Talk
Just last month, I received an invoice from Fender instruments on pdf. I got
stuck at the alert document being processed twice. On the second attempt,
though, I decided to change the infer reading order setting in the combo box
to, I think it was, top to bottom, left to right. When I pressed the Start
button, things moved along quickly.

I don't know why it hung up.

I'm really frustrated with pdf documents. I use WE 9, Windows 7
64-bit on a laptop, have Adobe Reader xi and I'm not sure of the correct
settings for reading without sight. I've tried using the setup assistant
which helps some but I also realize that scanned documents won't read at
all. Do I need Acrobat.com or not and how might I convert a document or
newsletter into a Word document for Office 2010?
Adobe Reader often says, Alert, document being processed! And never does
anything but sit there! I don't know if there are helpful apps for this or
something else but I should be able to at least read the text even with some
images in the document, right? I mean, if it's not a scanned document.
I thank you for help from snowy MN,
Jo Taliaferro

Dear List, especially XP users:
Until I can get a newer computer, I am still using Windows XP. I realize it

Jo,

The Adobe Reader won't do anything with scanned PDF documents. If a document
is accessible, you can save the
document to text, but this won't work on scanned documents.

I don't wish to buy the Readit Air as it's very expensive and does multiple

It might be that the document is in protected view. I've not found any way
to fix that accept to press F6 until you hear protected view and then you
need to find the button that will let you enable it for that document. This
seems to happen with any PDF file you try to open rather than saving to your

Hi

why would this be considered off-topic, and why would we want to hide this
from the AI Squared guys? These are important questions that I
seriously think they need to see and pay attention to,
because it is a legitimate concern. Anymore, pdf is a popular document on
the web, and I think Window-eyes 9 should support it to the best of its
abilities, as much as Adobe and other creators of PDF documents will allow
it to. From what I can tell, it depends largely on the way the document is
created. There accessibility tools that document creators can add to their
documents and some people just don't even realize they exist. So I do
believe this is actually a pretty important ddiscussion, lets not hide this.

still have windows xp

Ted: Perhaps consider whether your Windows XP box can be upgraded to at
least Windows 7. In the perfect world, my preference would be to go for
brand new Windows 8.1, but personal budgets do matter.

Then: with either seven or 8.1, Window-Eyes is a better animal with
Version

9.

This is particulalry so with respect to web access. My sense is that you
will get instability issues running Window-Eyes 9 on top of XP, but it
definitely performs well on later Windows releases and is a significant
improvement with respect to stability over 8.4.

Best.

Vaughan.

Dear List, especially XP users:
Until I can get a newer computer, I am still using Windows XP. I realize
it
has not been tested for Window-eyes nine. Those who are still using
windows

XP, have you stayed with window-eyes 8.4 or have you taken a chance with
version nine. Your answers will help me decide whether to wait or upgrade
to the newest window-eyes. Thanks for your experiences regarding this.

I bought a Dell tower computer and got one of these keyboards without a
numlock key. I called them and explained that visually impaired people,
especially, need the numlock key so that we can switch back and forth as
needed.Dell sent me a replacement keyboard for free.

It has a numlock and works just fine.

the problem is not all keyboards have a numlock key. some dell computers are
one of them and are on by default. so w e would be rendered useless unless
you use the laptop layout.

Hi,
If using the Window-eyes default layout, just toggle on numlock with the
numlock key.

I have Abby FineReader and I can right click on a pdf file choose to
convert the file to a word document. FineReader is a little expensive if you
don't need it for other things.$129 at Amazon. OmniPage OCR software is a
lot cheaper and probably would do the same.

Hi all,
I have been reading everything I could find on the Adobe website so I do
understand that pdf documents can't be read if they're sent as scanned
documents. I know that authors are not always conscious about making
their

documents accessible and using the WCAG guidelines. I am asking about my
own settings and whether I have them set optimally for a blind user. Do I
need Adobe Acrobat to convert to Word, etc.? I have the WE app. But I
believe it's fairly old.
I don't wish to buy the Readit Air as it's very expensive and does
multiple

things I don't need. Yes, I can read pdfs on my iPhone but that doesn't
always fit for me.
I appreciate all the wisdom here. I've been screaming at my church about
their pdf newsletter but... (sigh)...someday!

Hello Ted,

No matter what version of Windows I was running, I would wait
for Win Eyes 9 to clear up some of the Bugs it suffers from.

I have two systems with Win XP, and I am sticking with 8.4.

I have another system with Win 7, and there too, at least for now, am
sticking with 8.4. maybe 6 months from now, there night be a 9.1 or
a 9.2, and I'll perhaps upgrade then. I do not have the money I once
had, due to a cut back in my employment. So now, I don't have the
money to experiment with New Software.

I would urge all users of office 2007 and later who don't like the ribbon to
check out classic menus for office. This is a ribbon add on that gives you
back your classic menu interface. While I have no problem with the ribbon
I must confess that I don't understand the layout meaning why things were
put where they were. With classic menu for office just press alt+q twice
and you will get everything you need in a vertical menu.
This app is not free how-ever.
There is a free alternative but I don't remember the name of it at the
moment, and I did not like it as well.
