Sea Battle Game caused WE app sounds to be lost

2015-07-08 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hello to everyone who installed the Sea Battle Game recently,

I am forwarding a message sent to me by the developer of the Sea Battle
Game, which you will find at the end of this message, as he is not
subscribed to the talk list.

You may have noticed that after installing the initial release of the Sea
Battle Game, certain WE app sounds such as the progress indicator beeps were
lost; in fact, any apps which use .wav files to produce sound became silent.
This happened because of a bug in the Sea Battle installer which caused all
audio files with the .wav extension to be renamed with the .ogg extension,
and so the apps could not find their associated audio files.

This is to inform you that the newest version of the Sea Battle Game
contains an option which allows you to restore the original names of your
audio files and so to restore the sounds for your apps.

The app author wishes to apologize for any inconvenience caused by this
glitch.

Thank you,

Rod Hutton, writing on behalf of Bruce Babcock, the developer of the Sea
Battle Game, since he is not subscribed to the talk list

Subject: Re: Rename .ogg files back to .wav files

Hi Rod,

Before you posted I decided to upgrade the game to have it in the menu
for the game posting.
The new version is 1.0.2 and has the Rename files option under the Num
Lock setting in the menu.
It will rename any files that got changed and count the number of changes
and post the result after they are renamed.

It is sad that I should have realized that my progress bar was not
beeping but did not. The option is there and for only default folder files.

The fix is in and will move on to the next problem.

Bruce

I use the newest version of Window-Eyes, Windows 7, and IE 11. Speech has

frustrating. After deleting a shortcut for IE on the desktop, so far there

I am trying to keep track of situations and one that appears to be happening
about half the time is launching URLs from the Qube.

I press control+Windows Key+up or down arrow keys to read the tweets in my
home buffer. When there is a link to call up a web page I will press
control+Windows Key+B. Right now I have IE 11 set as my default browser.

Roughly half the time the dialogue Window-Eyes has stopped working will pop
up. This is after IE is launched. No error report is generated.

That is very strange! I have a shortcut for Internet explorer, and that has
never caused a problem. I found a way to make the speech come back when it
freezes when I get another message while I'm doing email. I alt tab to
something else, and the trick is, when I am in whatever other rwindow is
open, I have to move the cursor and make it speak, then alt tab back to the
open message and speech is back. I think I said that didn't work before,
even though I could make it read whatever the title of the window was I alt
tabbed to. But I didn't realize that when I was there, I had to move the
cursor around a little before I went back to the window I had open when it
stopped speaking. Then it would talk and read that window. I hope what
I've said makes any sense. Pam.

Oh yes, I was wondering about the slight punctuation bugs. Even though I've
got my punctuation set to none, Eloquence still reads out occasional commas
and full stops and its favourite is reading the closing quotation mark of
any speech as apostrophe, so, for example, you'd get: today is Wednesday,
apostrophe! Minor irritations as I think the Sapi five eloquence is
brilliant!

Cheers,

Hi Robin,

Okay, you press Control-F to begin a search in Word.
Once you type in the search phrase, press Enter to start the search.
Assuming you don't get a message that it's not found, then you can assume that
it was found.
Press Shift-F6 to jump back to the document pane, and the search text will be
highlighted, which you could read with Control-Shift-M, but who cares, since
you know what you searched for.
At this point, what I do is press Control-LeftArrow to move the cursor back a
word and this automatically unselects the highlight and you can navigate back
and forth and get a sense of the context of the search text within the document.
If you want to jump back into the search pane, then F6 will do this.
Also, the Word shortcut key to find the next occurrence in the forward
direction in your document is Control-Alt-Y.

a lesson or a resource? Thanks! (My workaround at the moment is to use the Go

Hi Bryan,
Yes, financial barriers to access technology is still a problem for many
people across the globe. This is one of the reasons we partnered with
Microsoft to make Window-Eyes available at no additional cost if you have a
computer running Office 2010 or newer. If you don't already own Office, you
can get it via an Office 365 subscription for as little as $6.99 per month
(https://products.office.com/en-us/compare-microsoft-office-products). This
offer gives people access to the latest version of Window-Eyes. You can
obtain this free version of Window-Eyes at www.WindowEyesForOffice.com.

Hi Hui,
Regretfully, Ai Squared is unable to provide any support for Windows XP and
this is the type of situation that can occur when using an unsupported
operating system with a very old version of Window-Eyes. I am confident that
if you were to use a modern operating system and a more up to date version

I took the survey. However, on last webaim survey, Window-Eyes was at 6.5,
JAWS at 50%, NVDA at 20%, and voice over and zoomtext decreasing in usage.
This was on the last survey, so things might have changed.

Greetings Ai Squared Customers,

Make sure that your voice is heard in the latest WebAIM survey. Since
this is the only survey of its kind, many organizations often use it to
determine which screen reader and magnifier they will support. You will
find both Window-Eyes and ZoomText on the survey list regarding what
technology you use. If you have not already done so, we highly encourage
you to take a few minutes today to complete the survey, which is located
at http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey6/.

If you know a Window-Eyes or ZoomText user, please help spread the word.

Thanks!

about half the time is launching URLs from the Qube.

I press control+Windows Key+up or down arrow keys to read the tweets in my

control+Windows Key+B. Right now I have IE 11 set as my default browser.

Roughly half the time the dialogue Window-Eyes has stopped working will pop

RE: Have you taken the WebAIM survey? Make sure your voice is heard!

2015-07-08 Thread Marc Solomon via Talk
Hi Bryan,
Yes, financial barriers to access technology is still a problem for many people
across the globe. This is one of the reasons we partnered with Microsoft to
make Window-Eyes available at no additional cost if you have a computer running
Office 2010 or newer. If you don't already own Office, you can get it via an
Office 365 subscription for as little as $6.99 per month
(https://products.office.com/en-us/compare-microsoft-office-products). This
offer gives people access to the latest version of Window-Eyes. You can obtain
this free version of Window-Eyes at www.WindowEyesForOffice.com. There are also
ways of raising funds to pay for access technology by working with charitable
organizations or creating your own grassroots fundraisers. Try talking to your
local Lions Club, Rotary Club or religious institution to find out if they
would be willing to help.

I've been trying to read a file with acrobat reader using the "left to
right" option and come up with a blank screen. Has something changed?
Using the regular options simply gives garbage and using the option I
mentioned used to work consistently with these documents.

Hi Hui,
Regretfully, Ai Squared is unable to provide any support for Windows XP and
this is the type of situation that can occur when using an unsupported
operating system with a very old version of Window-Eyes. I am confident that
if you were to use a modern operating system and a more up to date version
of Window-Eyes the issues you are experiencing would be corrected.

Regards,
Marc

You pointed out the reason that it is very important everyone take the
survey. We know that our number of users is much higher than we have seen
in the past on this survey, so we encourage everyone to take it.

Thanks!

Hello, can anyone recommend a speech friendly way to play mp4 files. I
have never used mp4 files before, so I'm assuming I will need a certain
kind of program to do this on a laptop. Thanks.

Hi Grant,
If you don't think that your results were recorded, we would encourage you
to try to complete the survey again. Here are a few tips that might help.
After you activate the Submit button, a new web page will be loaded. On
this page there is a button that you need to activate to confirm that you
want to submit your survey. So, in essence there are two submit buttons in
the process. After activating the second button, a new page will load with
a confirmation message and the title of this page will indicate that you
completed the process. Just hit Control-Shift-T to reread the title bar.

Re: mp4 files

2015-07-08 Thread Chris Gilland via Talk
The only thing that I would say regarding WinAmp is that I think you have to
have QuickTime, or iTunes, preferably both, installed in order for WinAmp to be
able to play these files correctly. It needs something to backbone off of. I
could possibly be incorrect on this, but at least that is what I am told.

now, this however being said, VLC media player should be able to play these
files with no problem. Regardless, if you have QuickTime, or iTunes installed.
so, that might be another possibility worth looking into.

Chris.

Hi Hui,
Regretfully, Ai Squared is unable to provide any support for Windows XP and
this is the type of situation that can occur when using an unsupported
operating system with a very old version of Window-Eyes. I am confident that if
you were to use a modern operating system and a more up to date version of
Window-Eyes the issues you are experiencing would be corrected.

Re: sapi5 eloquence now available

2015-07-08 Thread Whizza via Talk
Oh yes, I was wondering about the slight punctuation bugs. Even though I've
got my punctuation set to none, Eloquence still reads out occasional commas
and full stops and its favourite is reading the closing quotation mark of
any speech as apostrophe, so, for example, you'd get: today is Wednesday,
apostrophe! Minor irritations as I think the Sapi five eloquence is
brilliant!

Cheers,
Sandra.

Re: Messages being bounced

2015-07-08 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland via Talk
As far as I know, we haven't even had this list running for 3 weeks. We're
barely going on 2 and a half.

Are you sure you're thinking of the correct list that is bouncing? Yes,
generally if you reply to one of those messages it should prevent things
from getting worse on your end, but that still doesn't explain why this is
happenning for some people.

I dono what to say more than please check your e-mail settings and make sure
everything is configured correctly on your end. I know that isn't probably
the answer you want to hear, but at this time, Maheen and I both are
clueless. Folks, I've spent the last 3 hours almost trying to figure this
out. Believe me. If there was something wrong on our end, by now, I would
have found it. Especially considerring I've read every page cover to cover
of the Mailman manual/documentation at least 10 times through. I've
checked, double checked, tripple checked, and quadruple checked everything,
and I do? mean, every! thing! on the list admin side of things. I don't see
even one single thing on the back end that would be causing this.

The only explaination I have is either your e-mail client is set incorrectly
in one factor or another, or your ISP is doing something willy milly, or a
combination of both.

While we have a few members who are bouncing, we have even more who are not.
This is why, though I don't totally doubt things, I do ask that you look
carefully at all, and I do mean, all! your e-mail settings, and make sure
all is set correctly 100% according to the help docs found by your e-mail
provider.

I know it might make some of you mad, and maybe even so much so you leave
the list. Maheen nor I have any control over that, and can't force you to
stay, nor leave, but we'd hope! as all of us being adults, that you all
would trust Maheen and I enough to realize that we're not kidding when we
say we've done literally everything we know that there is to do. I even
called my hosting provider that hosts the server which our list is being ran
on. They! don't even have a slightest idea, more so than what I've already
indicated.

Also, without me seeing the actual bounce messages, please don't send them
to the list by the way, send them to me privately, my e-mail address is at
the bottom of this message... it's a bit difficult for me to addiquitly
track things down.

Realize that I am trying, but we can only do so much.

Chris.

RE: question on new browse mode

2015-07-08 Thread Marc Solomon via Talk
Hi Robin,
By default, Window-Eyes 9.1 will speak the control's label prior to its type.
For example, "Other, unchecked check box". The logic behind the design is that
we had to choose a default order and most people seem to prefer to hear the
name of the field before the type. There is a verbosity setting that allows you
to configure Window-Eyes to speak the control's label after its type. For
example, "check box, Other unchecked". If this is your preference on the web,
you can make this change program specific for Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.
In the Settings tree in the Window-Eyes control panel, go to Verbosity, Common,
and select Focused. Then press F6 and Tab until you find the Speak Window Types
combo box. Select the Before Window Data open. If you want this change to only
apply to your web browser, make sure that your web browser's set file is the
active set file and change the Scope to Program using the Toggle Scope button
found just before the combo box. Don't forget to sav
e your settings after making this change.
Web authors can assign an onClick attribute to any element on the page and when
the element is clicked a corresponding script will be executed. For example,
there might be a custom designed sign in element that when clicked, causes a
pop-up to be dynamically displayed with username and password fields. So,
Window-Eyes is just telling you that something will happen if you activate the
element and this verbosity option is turned on by default. This information is
most useful when you encounter a custom control that you wouldn't necessarily
know is interactive as you would with a standard link or button. For those who
are familiar with HTML, authors often use and tags to create
custom elements that look and behave like standard controls. This isn't a best
practice for accessibility, but it is a common technique used by web designers
to gain full control over the visual appearance of the element. You can turn
off the announcement of clickables and mouseOvers if you d
on't want to hear them. Go to the Settings tree in the control panel,
Verbosity, Browse Mode, Actions. I hope you find this info helpful.
Kind Regards,
Marc

Subject: question on new browse mode

Hi,
I just switched from WE 8.4 to WE 9.1 at work, so I'm really starting to notice
the differences in how the browse modes function. I just listen to Marc's
great webinars on complex webpages and learned some useful tips. I still have
a couple questions

1) Checkboxes; It seems that, when using X to move to the next checkbox,
I'm hearing some text before the work checkbox, whereas it was the reverse in
the old browse mode. I have an approval system I use at work where I go to the
checkbox, then move down to hear the name of the person the request is
associated with. Using X worked beautifully in WE 8.4, but now, when I hit X I
heard a long winded line of text before hearing the work checkbox. I think I
also heard it work this way on Marc's webinar. Is this what you are finding
to? Any logic in this over the old way of just saying checkbox first?

2) Why am I hearing "mouseover" and "clickable" now? I do not recall
hearing this at all on Marc's webinar and think I saw something in verbosity
for turning these on or off. What do these indicate and what is the benefit of
having them turned on? Is a clickable different from a link? It's feeling
distracting now.

I took the survey. However, on last webaim survey, Window-Eyes was at 6.5,
JAWS at 50%, NVDA at 20%, and voice over and zoomtext decreasing in usage.

This was on the last survey, so things might have changed.

Subject: Have you taken the WebAIM survey? Make sure your voice is heard!

Thanks!

Jeremy

Using VLC Media Player to watch a sitcom. How can I advance to the next
