I can't say I quite agree with the whole idea of not using your full
name, because there's no way of people to access your email unless
there's a deeper issue.

Best thing you can do is register your phone number with the do-not-call
database, located at

http://www.donotcall.gov

Ok, now back to Window-eyes discussion for me!

there are hackers that compile hundreds of thousands of names and

they get thousands of dollars per month when they sell other hackers

and have you noticed how paypal uses your full name every month when

if you also use your full name on your paypal account they would only
have to guess your password if they don't have it already from
facebook or twitter because most people use one password for everything.

the most popular password people use is password, or 1 2 3 4 5 etc.

Hi. My advice: call the Federal Trade Commision and REPORT IT, REPORT IT,
REPORT IT! If your caller ID gives a phone number, note it down and tell
the Trade Commission that in their complaint system, NEVER, EVER,
EVER!! play along with those birds; they're scammers out to
 get any poor schmoe who plays along with their calls.  They must be stopped;
that's my 2 cents worth; thanks.

 Dave,

When you played along with them, you probably got upgraded to their "Call
more often" list. If you just start hanging up on them, they will probably
downgrade you to a "Call now and then" list and eventually they will stop.
I think it is unlikely that they are calling because they get notified when
you start your system, it is probably just coincidence, but it can't hurt to
do a full virus and malware scan if you feel strongly that they are somehow
being notified. They are going to try to call when they think they are most
likely going to get a human being answering.

In general, I don't play along with any scammers or spammers, even when it
is tempting. At the very least, you may indicate to them that you are worth
contacting again, and you could give information to them without meaning to.

 Best regards,

 Steve Jacobson

When I first got these calls they said they were from Microsoft but with
later calls they did not make that claim. If you let them have a remote

to remove them.

Hello,

Looks like most here have had to deal with these guys as well. Some of
your responses were quite good!A couple of them had me laughing.
Had me wishing they would call me back again so I could pull the same
stunts.

I did respond one time where I completely had the guy speechless.

Idiot Caller: Hello this is Windows Technical Support. We have detected
a

problem with your computer.

Grumpy Dave: Sorry, but I use an Apple System. Apples do not run MS
Windows.

The guy didn't know what to say to that one.

Actually, I think Apple systems can run MS Windows, but if you have an
Apple, why put MS Windows on it? Well, I can see needing to run some
software that is only made for Windows. But even then, I think I would
just

buy a cheap MS Windows System, rather than having a Dual-Boot Mac.

But thanks for the feed back for the question. I am not as concerned
about these calls now.

Troublesome Web Sites

2016-06-27 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I have recently written about some troublesome web sites: Audible, Kindle,
Delta Airlines, etc. Thanks to Mark Solomon’s testing, he found that the Delta
site works better with Firefox than with Internet Explorer. He indicated that
there may be a bug with browse mode which he will investigate. I hve found that
the Audible site also works much better with Firefox. I haven’t tested Kindle
yet, but it may be the same. I have actually been able to access the download
options for Audible books using Firefox. I can also display all the titles in
my library as before. It’s good to realize that not everything is as bad as it
seems.

We have detected a
problem with your computer.

But even then, I think I would just
buy a cheap MS Windows System, rather than having a Dual-Boot Mac.

But thanks for the feed back for the question. I am not as concerned
about these calls now.

I had a friend who got one of these calls and he doesn't even have a
computer. They know nothing except that they will manage to find a
few suckers in every so many that they call. That can reap them a
lot of money even if it's only one in a thousand. If I have the
time, I like to waste their time. Otherwise, I tell them that I have
no computer so it's obviously a scam. It generally leaves them
dumbfounded. Then I hang up.

RE: Kronos Time system access

2016-06-27 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
My update today is that the tech team was able to get me into the HTML version
of the site for Kronos, but the problem is something with the corporate user
authentication process. They are hoping to get me clearance to use this login
work around. For now, I'm really glad to know the HTML version still works!
The new version the rest of the company is using only allows me to click
through some links on the top of the page. If I move the physical mouse over
the rest of the screen it will read some of the information, such as my
employees' names, but arrowing down through the content and using the mouse
pointer keys reads nothing.

month, with a lot of cool features. I hope we can still use it. I'll believe it

Good luck on getting your HTML access re-established. Hopefully this was just
an oversight in the IT department and not something more systemic.

Hoping those 1 or 2 of you out there using Kronos Time keeper at your company
will see this. We've talked about access in the past to this time card system
with WE. Until now, I've had access to a link into Kronos that provided an HTML
based version of the time card. All the rest of my colleague go into a Java
based version that will not read at all with WE.
Last weekend, Kronos did an update to our system and now my URL for the HTML
version will not work. I'm working through internal channels to find out if a
new link to this HTML version still exists. Are any of you experiencing
something similar? Maybe the upgrade was only done for my company's instance
of the software, but I'm trying to arm myself with any other user information.

Dave,

When you played along with them, you probably got upgraded to their "Call more
often" list. If you just start hanging up on them, they will probably
downgrade you to a "Call now and then" list and eventually they will stop.
I think it is unlikely that they are calling because they get notified when you
start your system, it is probably just coincidence, but it can't hurt to do a
full virus and malware scan if you feel strongly that they are somehow being
notified. They are going to try to call when they think they are most likely
going to get a human being answering.

In general, I don't play along with any scammers or spammers, even when it is
tempting. At the very least, you may indicate to them that you are worth
contacting again, and you could give information to them without meaning to.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

So far, every call, which are probably two or three dozen by now, have

I know about these calls. The guys have white-bread names like Peter or Jim,
but their accents indicate India.
I haven't received calls like this for some time now. Maybe that's because
before they can say much, I say quickly, "My computer is fine, thank you.,"
and then hang up.
I'me had the urge, however, to say in my best East Indian accent, "Hello,
Peter. My name is Priya." But if I tried, I'd probably start laughing.

Peace.

It's not worth bothering with all that. I just hang up. It seems like the

any for a while, then you get another bunch of them. One guy asked for my
husband by name. I said he was dead, and slammed the phone down. He called

I like to act like I'm going along with them, I say just a minute, or if
they ask me for my name or my wife's name, I say hold on or I'll get him or
her, then I lay the phone down and let them wait until they give up. I
figure after a while they'll get tired of wasting all that time on hold.

If you google this subject you will see this a wide spread scam. I have
gotten the same call numerous times.

On 6/27/2016 4:11 PM, David via Talk wrote:

May not have anything to do with your system restart. Once they've got
your phone number, they can go on for ages. One idea could be to get a
caller-ID unit, and when you hear the number spoken out to you,
determine whether you will pick up the phone or not. OK, likely they may
be prepared, and have made their number not show up on caller-IDs, but
in such cases, you will hear the unit saying something like "number not
available", whenever they call. You then would refrain from answering
the call. Do they get enough unanswered calls, they may eventually give
up. This kind of prank-calls, are much like spam-mails.

Should you get hold of the phone number they are using, you could of
course contact Microsoft customer service, and let them be aware of the
thing. Not sure if they would follow up on it too much, but definitely
worth a try.

In case you really can confirm it has to do with your system startup,
there could be a couple of suggestions to consider. One thing is that
you may want to run another virus/spyware/malware scanner. No scanner is
perfect, and sometimes using an extra scanner has proven helpful in
getting rid of things. You may also want to have two eyes assist you, in
running a Bootup-scan, from either of your your anti-scanners. This
would get deeper into the OS, and may grasp hold of something before it
gets started.

Does this only happen if you awake your system from sleep or hibernation
mode? In such cases it could be worth to check what software is actually
running at the moment.

Do you use any cloud services, that automatically starts up with your
system? Try turning them off and determine if the calls still keep
coming in. Someone may have hacked your online-services. Changing your
login information on the service in question, may be one way to prevent
them from seeing when you are online.

If possible, perhaps try starting your system, disconnected from the
internet. Let it run for an hour, and see if they call you. Reconnect
the internet, and see what happens. You may of course have to repeat
such testing over a few days.

And finally, someone may have managed to hack your internet connection,
or your ISP account. If possible, change the password on your internet
connection. Is your router running in OPEN mode, try to apply some
security settings from within the router itself. If you are on a
wireless connection, make sure you are behind proper protection, and
even try change the very network name, to something you only would know
to recognize.

As you can see, not an easy task. And like I introduced, them first
having your phone number, it is hard to get rid of them. Should you be
able to catch their number, try contacting your phone company, and ask
if they provide number blocking services, that you can have them block
the actual number from calling you in the future.

Hope any of this proves helpful to you, and others who experience this
kind of prank. Of course, if nothing else works, never give ear to them
- not even to play fun. That only encourages them. It's like if you
reply on a spam-mail. Once you hear their introduction, and know it is
prank, simply just disconnect. Even if it so happened that Microsoft
ever would call you as a private individual, my guess is that they will
never offer you something you cannot do without. Microsoft, like most
other big companies today, have far more efficient ways of reaching
their customers. Unless you have specifically made an apointment with
them to call you back, you should consider any such calls pure prank.

2016-06-27 Thread John Farley via Talk
I have also suffered from these calls.
They simply kept on coming back even though it was clear I wasn't
interested.

I found a technique which worked in the end, see the conversation below.
Me "Please give me your name and the company you work for"
Them "Why"
Me "Because I am going to call the police on my other phone while you are on
my line"

That did it.

And it happens when you turn on your computer? I don't like that. That
sounds like somebody has gotten into your computer, somehow. Most of those
calls come randomly, not like yours. The people don't know if your computer
is on or not, usually. Pam.

I tell them that's a pretty good trick, considering I don't even have a
computer connected to the internet, grin. They usually hang up and only
call back occasionally. My sister played along with them one time and
kept them on the phone for 20 minutes. After one step, he asked her what
was on her computer screen. She told them nothing. The man was puzzled
for a minute. She replied that she didn't have a computer and that she
just had a desire to annoy him the same way he had annoyed her. He
never called back. I hope this gives at least one person a smile.

Hi.

I called WE Support about this same problem earlier today.
I am using a new Windows10 (not an upgrade from Windows7), WE 9.4, and I
bypass the logon screen when I start up the machine.

Check to see if video support for WE has been lost. Do this by opening
WE control panel, going to the Help menue, and pressing enter on "About...".
If you hear that the video driver is missing, close WE completely and
then launch WE. Then try tabbing to the message window in BECKY! If
you still don't hear the message, close BECKY! and launch it again.

gotten the same call numerous times.

be prepared, and have made their number not show up on caller-IDs, but
in such cases, you will hear the unit saying something like "number not
available", whenever they call.

Unless you have specifically made an apointment with
them to call you back, you should consider any such calls pure prank.

I know about these calls. The guys have white-bread names like Peter or
Jim, but their accents indicate India.
I haven't received calls like this for some time now. Maybe that's
because before they can say much, I say quickly, "My computer is fine,
thank you.," and then hang up.
I'me had the urge, however, to say in my best East Indian accent,
"Hello, Peter. My name is Priya." But if I tried, I'd probably start
laughing.

Peace.

Hello, until a couple days ago, I would tab from the message list to a
message in Becky, and wineyes would read it. Now when I tab to the
message window, wineyes says, vertical, vertical, edit box. I can't even
arrow up and down through the message. All I get is blank blank. I know
there is text there because I turn on NVDA and it reads it. Has anyone
experienced this, or have an answer to this puzzle? Any help is
appreciated.

Butch

RE: Delta Airlines. Another Site Harder to Use For Sake of New Technology

2016-06-27 Thread Marc Solomon via Talk
Hi Tom,
I just got a chance to do some testing on the Delta home page. I focused my
testing on the Passengers combo box/drop down that is used to select how many
tickets you want to purchase. I found that user experience is much better in
Firefox than in Internet Explorer. This is because Firefox and Window-Eyes
currently do a better job of handling custom controls that are implemented
using the Accessible Rich Information Application (ARIA) specification. And,
this particular Passengers combo box was built using ARIA.
Using Windows 8.1, Window-Eyes 9.4 and the latest version of Firefox I was able
to successfully locate the Passengers combo box, and after turning browse mode
off, I was able to select the number of passengers using Up and Down Arrow. The
only information that isn't announced by Window-Eyes is the name of the combo
box when Browse Mode is on. So, I just heard "combo box" after I landed on the
Passengers combo box when navigating with single letter navigation in Browse
Mode. For example, the second time I pressed C, I just heard Combo Box. As soon
as I turned Browse Mode off, Window-Eyes properly announced the name of the
combo box when I moved focus to it with Tab or Shift-Tab. I think this issue
might be a bug in Browse Mode and will report it to the Window-Eyes engineering
team.
So, I would recommend using Firefox when trying to interact with the Delta
website as well as others that use ARIA to implement custom form controls.
Regarding the Delta text-only website, in my experience text-only sites don't
always offer the same content and features as the main site. My hope is that
you will be able to successfully complete your tasks on the main site using
Firefox and Window-Eyes.
HTH,
Marc

I am using Windows 7 64-bit Pro, IE 11, and WE 9.4. Once on the site, I go
to "Skip to Flight Search" and press enter. From there, you can enter data
to select flights. You can check one-way or round-trip. There are combo
boxes for number of passenters and surrounding airports for example. Using
down arrow doesn't cause them to speak with browse mode off. The only way I
can find out what is going on is by turning browse mode back on and pressing
c to go to the combo boxand finally pressing Control+Numpad+5 to read the
line. Note that I haven't even tried to select a flight yet. On top of all
this, Delta claims to have a text-only site that can be found by pressing
something in the banner at the top of the screen. . I have not been able to
locate this. I have E-mailed them to see if they can send me a link. I'm not
holding my breath for a reply.

Can you provide exact steps to get to these combo boxes? Also, what browser
and operating system are you using?
Best,
Marc

Their comboboxes and pull-downs are a mess. I can’t get them to reliably
expand or talk. I have to go in and out of browse mode to get any
information at all, e.g., passengers and surrounding airport comboboxes,
etc. They say that they have a text-only version available, but I can’t seem
to find out how to access it. Has anyone tried it?

If you are using the Microsoft speech platform synthesizer, it isn't as
responsive as something like eSpeak.

Good to hear the news about the new version of Window-Eyes screen reading
software coming out, or rather, the update coming out.

I hope that The new Window-Eyes update has the bug fixed in it for reading
email and Microsoft Office Outlook 2013. I have been having trouble with that
issue, and also when I type into a search edit field, I have trouble because it
will only speak certain letters when I type a word into it. I have The NVDA
screen reader and it does not do that. Also, I have jaws 15 demo and it reads
fine so I assume from what I can find out and from what I am hearing, that's a
problem is with the Window-Eyes software possibly.

Anyway, hopefully it will be remedied, or fixed in this new release.

Cheers!
