Good Morning,

Thanks for the several suggestions.

Here's a bit more on what I am doing:

The Company's Voice Mail has been acting up for a couple of months now.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. And lately, it hasn't.

So when customers call in, if all Customer Service people are busy, the
caller should go to voice mail. Well, they don't. they just go away.

The phone system does record all numbers calling in, so there is a list
of phone numbers. But we have no way of knowing the name of the
customer calling, just their number. And some people call every day, or
multiple times per day. So in the record there are going to be
duplicates.

2. How do I find out which version of WLM I am using?

3. If I want to request an automatic reply to a particular message but not

RE: Finding all Duplicates II

2016-12-06 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
I agree that the Excel function to remove duplicates would be my approach.
I've used it several times recently on large data files. As long as you are
typing the numbers consistently, e.g., with the same punctuation, this will
work. Simply select all the numbers in your word document, then put your
cursor in the first cell in a blank worksheet in Excel. Hit Control V to paste
and each number should get pasted as a new row in Excel. Then, go to the Data
ribbon and tab over to Remove duplicates. When you click on that, a dialog box
will appear. Tab through the options. By default, the single column with your
phone numbers in it will be checked and you may need to check or uncheck the
box for whether your data has a header row. Hit OK and Excel will do the work
for you, plus tell you how many rows were removed. Just as an FYI for anyone
curious, the dialog box allows you to select the columns so that, for example,
if your data could have duplicates in column A that you w
ant to remove, but you do not want it to filter any duplicates from column C,
you can specify that.

Pivot tables is another way I'd handle this, but that's pretty complex for
explaining.

Good luck. Other than the typing of all those numbers, this sound like a fun
research project to me, but I'm a geek for Excel sometimes.

RE: Finding all Duplicates II

2016-12-06 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Dave,

Here's what I feel is the simplest solution using only Notepad or a similar
simple text editor.
If all of yor data is in a simple text file, then all you'd have to do is go to
a line containing any phone number, and alter the number in any way which seems
convenient in order to make it unique.
For example, if the phone number was:
(123) 456-7890
Then you could alter it like this:
(123)a456-7890
What I did was to replace the space in the phone number with a lower-case
letter a.
Then, using the Replace feature of the text editor, as Notepad has, in the Find
field place the phone number in the form in which it was originally written,
that is, with the space between the area code and the phone number.
You would then tab to the Replace with field, and ensure that it is blank.
Finally, tab over to the Replace All button, and, presto, all the duplicates of
that phone number would be removed.
You would then repeat these steps with each unique phone number in order to
remove the duplicates.
After all the duplicates for each phone number have been removed, you could
then do another Replace, and, using the example above, you could replace the
characters:
)a
that is, a right parenthesis followed by the lower-case a
with the characters:
)
that is, a right parenthesis followed by a space, in order to put all of the
phone numbers back into their original form.

Admittedly, this is a manual method, but, if the job isn't too big, it wouldn't
take that long.
It also has the advantage of allowing you to monitor your data in great detail,
rather than relying on an algorithm which can sometimes make you lose data.

Good luck,

Rod

Hi,
Over the years, I have used both the external Double Talk and the
Tripple Talk syns and would never bother with an external unit again.
These units were of the serial type and both were quite expensive for
what they were.

The Double talk needed to be turned off with the on off volume switch at
the end of each session to save the internal battery. In time, the
volume control became quite scratchy and eventually I gave it up.

The Tripple Talk went the same way but in a much shorter time frame. In
comparison, I found the Tripple Talk to be not worth the money. Maybe
the later versions have improved.

For some time now I have used a Creative usb external sound card costing
around $60 connected to a pair of speakers with a volume control. If the
volume ever becomes scratchy, it is an inexpensive solution just to
replace the speakers. This setup has been working for years without any
problems.

I mainly use Eloquence as my software syn and find it very responsive.
The other benefit to using a software syn is that there are many good
free voices which can be easily obtained.

Currently I have WE and Eloquence running through the external sound
card and have another voice setup to run through the internal sound
card if required. NVDA also is setup to run through the internal
cardwhich gives me a way of tracing any problems if WE will not talk
through the external card.

In short, save your money and get an external sound card as mentioned
above. With the modern fast computers, lack of responsiveness is not a
big a problem as it once was.

The newer Tripletalk mini doesn't have a built in battery and turns on when
the computer turns on and off when it goes off. It also has a slide switch
for volume. No power switch.

I think it is around $200.

RE: Finding all Duplicates II

2016-12-06 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
There is a remove duplicates option on the Data tab in Excel. It should
work to just paste all numbers into Excel if there is one number per line
and then sort the column and then remove duplicates. I think this would be
worth a try before writing a program. Also, the sort in excel is generally
easy to use, so I would consider sorting there even if one does not want to
remove duplicates automatically.

If a word document is needed, one could just select the entire column with
CONTROL-SPACE and copy it back into word. Doing this may create a table in
word, so one might want to use the "Paste" option on the HOME tab on the
ribbon and choose text only. Another approach to avoid creating a table is
to copy the column into NotePad and then copying the NotePad data into word.
You don't have to even save the NotePad document, just use it as a holding
area. Of course, there are other ways of doing this as well, this is just
one approach.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

The phone system does record all numbers calling in, so there is a list
of phone numbers. But we have no way of knowing the name of the
customer calling, just their number. And some people call every day, or
multiple times per day. So in the record there are going to be duplicates.

--
And the crazy thing is that there is no way that anyone knows, as how to get
this list of numbers out of the Phone Systems records.

Now, I am sure there is a file some where on the systems storage, but those
who know something about the phone system have no idea where that file would
be, or what it would be called.

So, the Boss has someone reading me these phone numbers out of the phone
system. I then have been typing them out in a Document, as in a long list.

Just by hearing the numbers, I can tell when I hear a duplicate number, but
this is not fool proof.

So I have these phone numbers, in a Word File. Hundreds of phone numbers,
and I am to remove the duplicates, because the Boss intends for Customer
Service to call all of these numbers back.

The Company already looks like idiots since customers are not getting called
back, and then to have the poor souls in Customer Service call a customer
twice, three times or more, isn't going to look great either.

So, I and another have been tasked with getting all of these numbers into a
file, to be given to customer service, and with no duplicates.

Welcome to the Real World when it comes to problem solving.

Butch's Sorting in DOS sounds like a possible solution. I can save my
document as a Text file. I'll give this a try.

Since I have hundreds of numbers to weed through, I was trying to use the
power of the computer to strip out the duplicates, rather than having me and
this other person go through them one at a time and hoping to remove all
duplicates.

So thought I would ask the list here, since we have some smart folks here.

AS I suggested, save to a standard text file with one number per line
and sort with the dos sort program. All duplicates should be together.

Re: OT: Looking for duplicates

2016-12-06 Thread Butch Bussen via Talk
If these numbers are one to a line and in a text file, you could use the
old sort program from dos at a command prompt. I know dos is dead, but
I still use it for some stuff. If you sorted the file, all of the same
numbers should be grouped together and you could delete all but one.
You can tell it what column to sort on also. I used it recently to sort
the lilst of songs in my juke box. I wanted one one list by letter and
another list by the name of the song. Just a thought.

I'd say, this whole thing would be quickly and easily done, by a few
lines of scripting. It is but one example, where scripting takes the
bigger bite, over any full-fledged piece of software, simply because you
can make the script do it the way you want.

Without promising anything further, you are welcome to get in touch
OFF-LIST, to discuss further scripting solution. Until I know more
details on the project, I am not going to promise anything at all.

Hello, Maybe someone here can give me an easier solution?

At my work, the Customer Service department has had a huge break down of
their Phone system. Voice mail is gone, but the system does record the
callers number.

I've been given almost two months worth of calls that have come in and
they want me to work with this list to remove all duplicates. There
are Hundreds of phone numbers in this list.

These numbers need to be Hand Typed into something, such as MS Word, so
they can be printed out and then Customer Service can call them back.

I am thinking there must be some way to detect duplicate numbers,
meaning someone has called in multiple times attempting to get to
someone in Customer Service.

Since these numbers will be getting manually typed into something, I am
open to any suggestions as to what would work for removing duplicate
numbers.

I thought of a Database, but Win eyes doesn't seem to work that well
with a Database. I could type them all into a Spread sheet, but I am
not familiar with all the features in spread sheets. Is there one that
would detect and tell me the duplications?

Anyone have any suggestions how to solve this problem?
