David,
I would sum it up this way. The very nature of a screen reader inexorably ties
it to the operating system it was written to work on.
And that in and of itself precludes it from being ported to any other operating
system.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom and Anthony,

I've heard that Microsoft is improving the accessibility of Skype, but I'm
not sure which version this is.
I assume that they will be improving all versions on all platforms including
macOS.
Personally, I use Skype on IOS and, with patience, it is fully accessible.

Best,

Rod

David,
NVDA has nowhere near the control and flexibility of Window-Eyes. You can
read the entire user's guide pretty quickly. It's the first option in the
help pulldown.
Unless I somehow missed it there's no control over the cursor keys.
Configuration profiles are the equivalent of set files.
Hth,
Tom

Anthony,

When a message like that comes up, you can open the Action Center on the
System Tray and you will find that message there. If you press ENTER on the
message, you will be brought to a Window that shows information about
updates including the one that is not completing. There will be an error
code associated with that message but it isn't that easy to find or read,
and I don't know the best way to tell you how to find it with Window-eyes
since I don't have Window-Eyes on the computer that is giving me this
problem. If you get the error code, searching for it with Google might give
you information. I have to tell you, though, that doing all of this has not
helped me resolve the problem I am having. I am going to just wait a while
to see if Microsoft eventually figures out why the updates are failing on
certain computers. It is most likely that there is some incompatibility on
my computer and possibly on yours that they will have to address. Sorry I
can't be more helpful.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I have and use a Mac, but its not the be-all and end-all of accessibility.
In the Mac world, they have the idea that the app developer must conform to
their standards, if the developer does conform exactly, then the program is
usually accessible, if the developer does something unusual, then the
program is not accessible at all. So, certain programs work well, but its a
subset of what is available.

I hope this clarify things a bit.

RE: problems with the last updates

2018-05-18 Thread anthony borg via Talk
Hi tom
Many thanks for your prompt reply and your explanation.
After I do the update and restart from the desktop as usual, and then I do
it again manually. the notification I get only say that the updates couldn't
be finished.
It doesn't give a reason why.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Anthony,
Does the message saying the update couldn't be finished give any reason,
such as components missing, incompatibility, etc?
If not I would first try shutting your system down instead of rebooting.
Give it 5 or 10 minutes before powering back up. Once in a while this takes
care of strange problems.
If it doesn't I'd do a manual check for updates. That might take care of it
as well.
Hth,
Tom

Hi tom
Firstly thanks for the narrator explanation. Now I don't know if you can
help me.
I have been trying to do the last major updates since last week. By doing
the normal procedure.
First I'm doing the update by using the restart from the desktop as usual,
then after that I'm rebooting it from the secure updates. i have been doing
this evry ten minutes for the last few days.
Evrytime I do it, I get a notification saying that the updates couldn't be
finished.
I don't know what else I should do now.

Hi Anthony,
I don't use Outlook. But I just looked at the keyboard shortcuts page for
Outlook because I thought perhaps Control+Shift+B was in the Window-Eyes
scripts.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/keyboard-shortcuts-for-outlook-3cde
b221-7ae5-4c1d-8c1d-9e63216c1efd
But Control+Shift+B is the native Outlook shortcut for the address book.
I then loaded NVDA because I still use Window-Eyes. I pressed NVDA+1 for key
describer mode. And Control+Shift+B is not a NVDA key combination.
So you should be able to just press it without pressing the bypass
combination first.
Hth,
Tom

Hi Anthony,

I didn't look at your list of commands because it will depend on what
version of Windows you're using and what build. I haven't used Narrator
much. But I took a look and you can get a list of commands with Caps
lock+F1. I did that and the read line key is Control+Caps lock+O, not
Caps lock+O.
I tried it in Notepad and it said "command not available." So I hit Caps
lock+F1 to double check. And when I exited and returned to Notepad it
worked fine. So I have no idea what's up with that.

I don't understand your question on writing a sentence and the cursor
being at the end. That's where it should be when you're writing.

Regards,
Tom

Hi tom
I wonder if you can help me.
I'm trying to use narrator and I'm using the keyboard commands according to
the keyboard commands and it isn't working.
For example, when I press the capslock + o, to read current line, it isn't
doing so.
Besides that I'm noticing that when I I write a sentence on the notepad
the cursor doesn't go at the beginning of the sentence, but it remains at
the end of the sentence.
I will attaching you a copy of the keyboard commands to check it for me
please and explain to me if I have the right one.
Thanks in advance
Anthony

Subject: Re: Removing bookmarks in mozilla

OK, I will try to explain this.
First, with Firefox open, press alt plus B (as in Bookmarks.) Next, press
enter on "show all bookmarks."
You will now be in the bookmarks library.
You can right arrow to expand the bookmarks toolbar or the next item down.
In both of these groups, you can now tab to the list of available bookmarks.
From here, you are on the actual bookmark and can press either the delete
key or the context key and find delete with your down arrow and press enter.
If you tab around enough, you will be put back in the main link you started
it. Apparently, I don't have any marks in my unsorted bookmarks heading
because I can't expand that one, or there is nothing listed there if I tab.

The primary thing to remember is that you can not delete the bookmarks from
the bookmark menu.

I hope this is easy enough to understand. If you need other help, you can
write me back and I will see if I can figure out something else.

Carol

Hi,
Also make sure Outlook Enhance isn't disabled within Outlook.
alt-f, t, A twice, tab 4 times.
Down arrow to disabled and tab to go and press enter.
Next, arrow through, if something like Outlook Enhance is in the list, press
space on it.
Shift-tab to enable and press enter. Ok or close all dialogs you opened.

Restart outlook.

Hi Yusuf,

Just to be clear, you must reinstall the set files, then the Office Enhance,
and then the Outlook Enhance apps, in this order.
And a reboot is always required after installing Outlook Enhance.

Good luck,

Subject: Problem reading emails with Outlook2016 and latest WE

Hi, Up until this morning, when Office updated itself, I was able to press
enter on a message in Outlook2016 and listen to Window Eyes read it
automatically. Since the update this no longer works. I am running the
latest version of WE with the latest Outlook sets and the Outlook Enhanced
App.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be able to do to get WE
behaving the way I want?

I suppose this might involve waiting for an update to the Outlook Enhanced
App?

I tried restarting my PC and removing and reinstalling both Office Set Files
and the Outlook Enhanced App, and just to be sure the Office Enhanced App.

The only option was to delete it or go to the site to delete it - the
license that is.
Rod said they have trouble with their server but if that was the case I
think allot of others would be posting about the same problem.
Perhaps I will have to call them, sigh.

rick,

Try going to your license management dialog box in the WE help menu. You
should find an option to revalidate online. Give that a try. It may kick up
and tell you that you have to contact AI Squared, but keep looking for the
option to validate.

This just happened to me a few minutes ago, and has happened before, about a
year ago, and luckily, I ran across that set of options while desperately
looking for help at that time.

Really hope this helps,

Larry

Subject: EXPLANATION

Tony,
This sounds more like the alternative functions of the F-keys on your
keyboard got activated. The quickest way to check is to open the Window-Eyes
control panel and press F1. It should open the Window-Eyes manual. You can
also try F6 in IE. It should go from the content window to the address bar.
If these keys do something different or nothing you'll have to figure out
how to get them back on your keyboard.
Hth,
Tom

I like windows but I am leaning more towards a mac because of the things
that people have to go through for windows.

I mean, come on; I mean with the way that window eyes and jaws are competing
with each other even though that VFO has them both under their banner it is
very sad that things have come to this parting of the markets i mean that
since VFO has both jaws, window eyes, magic and zoomtext the markets aren't
going to be very friendly in the long run; and as to a mac you don't have to
worry about if your windows computer goes by the way side that you have to
re-register your copy of windows
10 with a mac all Mac OS versions are free and that the built in screen
reader "voiceover" is totally built into the OS.

that makes a mac a very viable option and yes they are mor expensive then a
window computer but they are built to last; also you can run windows on a
mac as well, so you do have the best of both worlds.

Sorry, was focused upon the Security issue, and failed to give credit where
credit is due. The instructions telling how to use the Chess Clock were
written by someone else. Although, the style of writing instructions is
very much like my own.

but these instructions were one of the files available after Un-Zipping
the Excel file.I did write the Warning about the Security, but the
actual instructions telling how to use the Timer was wonderfully done by
someone else who chose not to sign their work.

Just giving credit where credit is due.

Hello Anthony,

Of course you need to Un-Zip this Excel file.Once it is Un-Zipped,
you can Open it in Excel. To do this, you should move it to where ever
you store all of your Office Documents.Start up Excel and open the
Chess Clock file into Excel.

WARNING: I have a suspicion this Chess Clock was made in a much older
version of Excel, perhaps from as far back as Office 97, or 2000, or
2003. If you happen to have a newer edition from 2007 or newer, the
instructions to change the Security of the file may not be accomplished in
the same way as in earlier versions of Excel.

Perhaps someone else on the list may know how to lower the Security in newer
editions of Excel?

Perhaps this is where you are having problems?

Instructions to use the Excel clock for timing games in the French Skype
tournament

Here is a tutorial about how to use the Excel chess clock .
of course, you have to have Microsoft Excel running on your Computer to be
able to run this file.

After you open the file to start timing a game, You need to go to Security
options to modify it, as Excel automatically prevents this Macro from
working as it suspects it to be a Virus or any harmful file. And since it is
not, here is how you allow running this Macro:

1.. open the attached file entitled"ChessClock.xls", and press "ok"
for the message that will appear.
2.. within the Excel WorkSheet, press Alt+T to go to "tools" menu, then
press the litter O to open the "options" multi dialogue box.
3.. keep pressing control + tab until you reach the security tab, or I think
that pressing control +shift +tab once will put you on it.
4.. press Alt+S to activate the "macro security" dialogue box.
5.. press alt+l to activate the "low" radio button, and then move with the
tab key to press "ok".
6.. in this stage, and if you are a JAWS user, JAWS usually hangs up in this
dialogue, so you will need to rout the jaws cursor to the PC cursor, and
press the page down to reach the end of the page, then move with the left
arrow to the "ok" button, and press the left click on it to activate it, and
you are done.
7.. finally, close the file, and open it again, the security dialogue should
not appear, and the file should be running ok now.

After you finish timing your game, it is better to "save as" the file to a
new one, just to keep the master file without modifications for your next
games.
Pressing the f12 key should open the "save as" dialogue, give it a new name,
preferably the two players names, and save it.

timing the game:

when you open the file, The active cell will be 1001 A 1. To start the game,
press control + Shift + w.
White's clock will begin counting down in column c.
2. Type in white's move in the A column then press tab.
Black's clock will begin counting down in column d.
3. After typing in black's move in cell 1001 B, press enter and make the
active cell 1002 A for white's second move. The black's clock should stop
automatically and the white's will run.
4. type the white's second move in 1002A and press tab to stop the white's
clock, activate the black's clock, and to type his move.

And so on,

To pause the clocks, press control + shift +q.
To restart white's clock use control + shift + w again.
To restart black's clock press control + shift + e.

White's time will be displayed in column c.
Black's time will be displayed in column d.

If one of the players runs out of time, then the symbol ### appears in the
time Colum and the game is over.

When the game is over, pause the clocks.

To copy all the moves, press control+shift+home when you are in the cell
containing the last move of the game.

Then, once you paste the moves into a new email or word document, the move
numbers need to be placed in front of each line.

Back to the Excel document, and as i mentioned before, you can save the game
as a new file to keep the original file unmodified.

A message window will say that both clocks have been stopped, simply press
ok to dismiss it, and proceed with your normal saving steps.

These instructions came with the Chess Clock file, and were available once
the file you have is Un-Zipped.

Subject: Email programs, Your Choice?

Hello,

For those of you who have used more than one Email program, if you have an
opinion as to which program you like the best, would you share that opinion?

I currently use Becky, and it works, but it has its quirks.

I used Eudora a very long time, but grew tired of jumping through the
Hoops needed to make it work in the next version of MS Windows. And
the 7.1 version has a few Bugs that never were fixed before the Company
retired Eudora.

Windows Live Mail is used by some, but Microsoft has just said that Windows
Live Mail will no longer be supported,. I would still use it, if WLM is
quick and simple to use.

The Email program that comes in Win 10 is an alternative to Windows Live
Mail. I have not looked at it yet, but have listened to a video about it.
Kind of a functional no fancy features kind of program. I might check it
out, providing it works well enough with Window Eyes.

And then there is Thunderbird. I used Thunderbird about four years ago.
Had it at work and I never liked it much, especially the Spell Checker.
I like getting a list of word possibilities, and if I recall, Thunderbird
doesn't give much in the way of a list.

However, several updates have come and gone since I used it, and so if any
here use Thunderbird and love it. Tell me why you love it.
Also The Window Eyes Support for Thunderbird might be better today than in
the past. I like a program where the Screen Reader allows me to read the
screens well. Moving around with the Tab key doesn't take me into areas the
Screen Reader doesn't read etc.

And if there are any Email programs I haven't mentioned, and you use them,
and like them, would you tell me about them as well?

Thanks for any opinions.

Grumpy Dave
