RE: betrayal

2016-06-17 Thread Barbara via Talk
I was out-of-town when all this came out, so I am catching up now. OK I want
to comment on this below. I do not think the comparison is really
appropriate mostly because we are talking about screen readers which has a
very small market. I agree at some future time this company will have only
1 screen reader since it is unlikely that profits will be enough to maintain
both. Remember unlike the company mentioned below these companies are
operating with a lot less margin for error Unlike those fast food companies,
there is a very limited market which does not allow for much expansion. So
time will tell and we can look back at today and see how accurate each of us
was. Smile.

Pam,

You might think so and it's what I thought too.

However, think of this one for a moment. Yum Brands is a big holding company
in the fast-food industry. They own brands such as KFC, Taco Bell and, I
believe, Pizza Hut. I believe there are others in that brand holding
company but don't know them off-hand. A google search would get you all of
them, I'm sure.

My point in bringing them up is that there are several brands under that
name and all are indepednet. Even though the same holding company owns all
of them, they each put out their own type of food and are distinct chains.

I'm wondering if VFO now becomes a major holding company in the AT world
with each brand allowed to be independent but there is some sharing of
resources. We will have to see what happens.

BTW I don't know why I didn't think of the comparison last night but time

How are they not the same thing? Just because they are smaller, doesn't
mean they are not competitors. This is not an example of a monopoly.
If Microsoft came out with a version of Windows that forced you to use
their screen reader, then you would have a point.

Are you sure Darrell? Even though I'm not exactly happy about this, I
wouldn't say it is a monopoly. We must just make sure that colleges,
universities and governments know there are alternatives such as SA,
Baum Cobra, Dolphin screenreader and NVDA. The problem will be if the
company or screenreader becomes totally dominant in the open market
and puts others out of business, but until then, is this really
antitrust? Of course, I'm not in the US or know your laws, but they
will argue there is enough competition as far as what I can see.
Won't trade commission be waste of time for whatever objective you want?
Maybe they must just merge and we see if there might be interesting
new products, although I think large companies, if there is only one,
innovation could become slower.
We maybe all upset or worked up now, but when the dust settles, at
least it isn't a giant with no alternative for those of us who want
alternative.
The only thing scaring me is, I hope Microsoft will then not just work
with this company and will work with the other screenreaders and we
don't end up with monopoly mega.

That's a good example of YUM. And YUM itself is a spin-off of Pepsico
(pep) which, over the years, had bought up Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Pizza
Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, et al.
So what you have is a bunch of initially independent fast food chains
which end up being bought up and placed under the Pepsi corporate umbrella
and then Pepsico packages them together into a new spin-off company, Yum
Brands (yum).
So, I suppose, as an example, someone could come along, make an offer and
purchase GW-Micro from its new owner.
OR JFW, Zoom Text, whatever.
Not saying this would happen, but, in the business world, brand names can
and do change owners sometimes for the better and other times with no
consequence and sometimes for the worse.

Re: betrayal

2016-06-15 Thread Pamela Dominguez via Talk
I was talking to somebody about the government only buying jaws, and she
apparently looked up on a site to find out what the government would be able
to purchase. Window eyes was listed on there, too. I don't remember what
they call that contract, but even though they purchased jaws, they also had
window eyes on there. My husband was trying to get them to buy window eyes,
but they wouldn't. They said they didn't have a government contract. It
turned out not to be true. They just didn't want to do it for whatever
reason. Pam.

2016-06-15 Thread Darrell Bowles via Talk
That is what a monopoly is.
Freedom scientific, used to be three separate companies. Arkenstone, lazy
engineering, and Henter Joyce.

Serotek isn't so much famous for their screen reader, as much as they are
famous for making all of their software work on multiple platforms.
They are also famous for the very many ways you could purchase their software.
They are the only company, that do not have software maintenance agreements.

Are you sure Darrell? Even though I'm not exactly happy about this, I
wouldn't say it is a monopoly. We must just make sure that colleges,
universities and governments know there are alternatives such as SA,
Baum Cobra, Dolphin screenreader and NVDA. The problem will be if the
company or screenreader becomes totally dominant in the open market

antitrust? Of course, I'm not in the US or know your laws, but they

Maybe they must just merge and we see if there might be interesting

innovation could become slower.
We maybe all upset or worked up now, but when the dust settles, at

the days of GWMicro, no agency would fund Window-Eyes even though it had a
price tag similar to JAWS. As for NVDA, it's a great product as far as it
goes. However, there are business's and employment that I have come across
who don't like OpenSource. The reason is that they fear that OpenSource
solutions can affect their computers with virus's, spyware, etc. Thirdly, it
allows Window-Eyes to become embraced in schools, colleges, universities,
etc as for years it hasn't had a chance to become accepted in schools in the
US or in Canada. Also, there are also JAWS scripts that could easally be
modified to work with Window-Eyes. These include CakeTalking from Dancing
Dots, which I personally use in my recording studio to record music, as well
as the lime notation product to notate scores. All of these packages that I
use are essential for my work as a musician.

And add that hideous copy protection system.

The old GW Micro always behaved ethically in my opinion, and although I have
always been forthright regarding some aspects of how customer sales and service
is delivered to those of us outside the U.S., Window-eyes has always been a
good performer in my life since 1998.

Change is always inevitable - but squashing of competitors who try to provide
consumer choice, and who just have to also make a living seems destructive to
me.

what reason?

Geez! Some of you make me laugh!

because the Federal Government tends to make worse just about everything
it touches.

So do you really want to get the Government involved?

RE: betrayal

2016-06-14 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
Yes: and I suggest that people go and check out AI Squared presentation from
CSUN - url not readily available to me. Lots of optimism, and plenty of talk
about Fusion, and the rewriting of braille support. Good things: now possibly
trashed.

Against my better judgement, I renewed my SMA. I believed that supporting
Window-Eyes was still a good thing. Sometimes we make wrong purchasing
decisions.

There are glimpses of how Freedom Scientific will behave. They recently merged
with Optelec, but when I last looked less than a week ago, products off the
Main FS site did not draw me to Alva braille displays - one of which I have.
Why would FS promote Window-eyes alongside JAWS, when Window-Eyes's market
share is so small?  And: FS filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against GW Micro.;

This is the inevitable concentration of all resources available to a small
market place into the hands of a monopoly.

My perhaps forlorn hope is that maybe Humanware will launch a new screen
reader, because for me at least, NVDA doesn't cut it.

Window-eyes will clealry still function on existing instalations, but we
eventually replace our hardware and software, and things will just start to
break.

I guess we are all speculating, and maybe some positive things are just around
the corner, which for reasons of commercial sensitivity, cannot yet be
disclosed.

Vaughan.

Darrell: I'm thinking many of those same thoughts on initially
reading about this. Kind of looks on the surface like AT they were
broken up in the 80's because they were a monopoly, then have
gradually built themselves back into the huge company they were.
Looks on the surface, also, like typical business dealing, you can't
beat the competition, so you, in the case of Freedom/VFO, buy them out
to get rid of them.

Please, AI Squared staff, shed lite on why you're jumping in bed with

Hi Guys. I know that some of you guys are upset about this but here is my
thoughts on this. As we all know, Window-Eyes has been denied its
opertunity in mainstreme blind related computer programs, meaning that in
the days of GWMicro, no agency would fund Window-Eyes even though it had a
price tag similar to JAWS.

Re: betrayal

2016-06-14 Thread Edward Green via Talk
FS also prevented manufacturers from supporting JAWS with their older displays,
effectively rendering perfectly serviceable displays obsolete for JAWS users,
even though they still worked with other screen readers' latest versions.
Presumably this was designed to encourage people non too gently down the Focus
route.

We don't need to wait to see how this plays out to know that lower prices and
more innovation are seldom achieved through reduced competition, particularly
in such a small and overpriced market.

At least Microsoft appear finally to be taking Narrator development seriously,
and other platforms are becoming increasingly viable.

Cheers,

Re: betrayal

2016-06-14 Thread multi 85 via Talk

I actually like Jaws. You are finding more and more third party support
for Jaws.

I have been a Window-Eyes user since the days of Windows 95. When
Freedom Scientific began the HUP with my former employer, I bought a
Jaws license and now I use both.

With free or low-cost screen readers, the writing for two screen readers
was on the wall. We'll see what happens.

Darrell,

With all due respect, what is sitting there all day bombarding this list
with rants going to accomplish? Go out into the woods, scream, and
uproot a redwood to burn off your fury. There's nothing we can do about
this decision. It's a done deal. And speculating is a waste of time
because only time will tell.

Re: betrayal

2016-06-14 Thread multi 85 via Talk
I am not one, but also funny for the users of magnifiers. I mean,
Zoomtext and Magic both big names, now will innovation become less
because only one magnifier? We still have small companies competing,
brave NVDA, Dolphin and System Access. I wonder if any other hardware
will come out to challenge Hims and Humanware, since Pac Mate was dead
failure.

Exactly, that's exactly what I am saying. We as consumers must make things
change, and agreeing with a CEo of a company that he has just given up isn't
going to change anything.

Looks on the surface, also, like typical business dealing, you can't beat

Well, they may not be jumping in bed But as with so many things these
days, it may have something to do with money. usually lack of it.

Wonder if Window Eyes owners will be given a chance to upgrade to Jaws,
without having to pay full price.

I was sorry to see GW Micro get bought by A I Squared, and now if A I
Squared has been absorbed, this might become very interesting,
Interesting in a not so good way.

I have never been impressed with the quality of JAWS or their Tech
Support.

Guess we will all see in time.

Well, it is a legitimate question. Why would you keep two separate screen
readers going. Seems like a waste of resources to work on both. Would be
more efficient to just have one and devote the resources that the other one
would take up to something else.
