Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos via Talk
Hi, no, I didn't say that at all. The short answer is, if you use Office
2007, 2010, 2013, or 2016, they will all be accessible. I'm sorry for
making it sound confusing to you.

It's up to you on which one you want to use. However, 2016 will have the
so-called latest and greatest features. Only you can decide if you want
those new features. In terms of accessibility, Office 2010 will work
with Jaws 18.

It's unfortunate this is happening to Steve's setup. However, it doesn't
happen to me. I'm using Jaws current 18 and Office 2016 current on

Hi David,

Nothing to be ashamed of. Call yourself "Practical"
rather than Cheap, Old Fashioned or Flat Broke.

I too have a working XP system, running Window Eyes 8.4, and and several
programs that frankly get the job done easier and better than their
updated and upgraded offerings.

That system is no longer on the Internet, that is why I have this here
Windows 10 system.

Although, I will have some disagree and roll their eyes, but I am
starting to enjoy Windows 10 as much as I like the old Windows XP.

Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-20 Thread Dave via Talk
Guess I would have to ask what you mean by "Secure".

I would say it as secure as any other program on the System.

The Average System suffers more from its Operator, than from any attack
from outside the system.

Sure, there are Viruses, and Malware, and if you are careless, and some
what Unlucky, you may fall to such a thing.

My observations over the years is that many System troubles are not
caused by Viruses, or Malware, but from some mishap caused by the System
owner, or someone they allowed to use the System.

Again, I am not saying that Viruses and other Bad Malware doesn't exist,
but when the normal precautions are taken, violations from such Beasts
are not usually the cause of System problems.

So if Microsoft will Authenticate your Copy of Office 2003, then by all
means, use it.

It's unfortunate this is happening to Steve's setup. However, it doesn't
happen to me. I'm using Jaws current 18 and Office 2016 current on
Windows 10 and can switch between mail, contacts, and calendars with no
issues.

I agree with Mr. Vaughan. Before everyone starts fighting like kids here for
no reason, go pay a listen to the podcast he's refering to. Most if not all
of your questions are answered there, as well as there are two folks, one of
them being Vaughan who give their viewpoints in regards to this. alot of
this bickering and nonsense is getting anyone no where. VFO made decision to
pull the plug, you can take it or leave it when it comes to the jaws offer,
simple as that. Great contribution you did Vaughan an keep up the good work.

for this supposed offer of free copies of JFW for WE users I'm pretty
sure it's a scam. I have a hard time imagining FS giving anyone free
copies of JAWS under any circumstances. As for which screen reader I
might switch to it probably wouldn't be JAWS, partly because I can't seem
to download a demo of the latest version to try before I buy, but also
because it's an absolute resource hog. I remember that from the twelve
years I used it before switching to WE.

Hello Vaughn. Who else is on FSCast with you and Jonathan? Is Doug and

Brian: firstly - I'm reinforcing the points which others have made. This is
not a scam, and Doug and Aaron continue to lead support for Window-eyes at
VFO.

Now for the list.

I agreed with VFO (verbally) that I would not discuss this until VFO
released its official announcement.

I was not coerced into any such agreement, and for the events i'm about to
describe - I was not paid.

Some of you may remember that my third attempt at contactingt VFO was shared
with the list. I asked for my email to go to a senior person - Chief
Executive or similar.

Now: way back when, as early as July or August, staffers at VFO encouraged
us to write to VFO expressing our concerns, raising suggestions etc. How
many did that? And unlike me - how many of you were persistent?

Several days after sending my third email mentioned above, I received
constructive email feedback from Eric Damery, anbd we skyped for about
45 minutes so that VFO could be assured that I would accept its offer.

I was pleased to contribute to the latest FS Cast, in which this offer is
discussed, and i've commented on my early experiences with JAWS. A list
member took the time to thank me for taking a stand.

Brian and others: if you want to believe this is a scam - it is your
right to do so. However: you cannot get away with calling people
liars. In fact: I am satisfied that Doug fought the good fight on behalf of
long serving Window-Eyes customers. He at least should be respected for
doing so. Doug and Aaron seem likely to be continuing to work in this
industry.

Taking up the offer is voluntary and in the short term, if you meet its
conditions, JFW won't cost you a thing.

Nonetheless, this is where we are at, and at least VFO is letting us migrate

Bryan, it's too bad you feel this way. I think that perhaps you are associating
Jaws with Freedom Scientific, meaning that if there were things that Freedom
Scientific did, not VFO, you might be thinking that all the same bad
experiences may happen again, or continue to happen. In any case, it's not FS,
(Freedom Scientific) who is giving out free copies of Jaws. So, you are right
about that. It's VFO who is doing this. can tell you that this is no scam. If
you hold a retail license of Window-Eyes, you will get a license for Jaws.
Maybe you think that the folks from the former GW Micro / Ai Squared are lying?
I don't think so.

Downloading jaws Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-15 Thread Brenda via Talk

Hey Brian

Maybe the server is just busy. I remember for past Window-eyes updates
I would wait a few hours or a day or two until everyone had gotten their
downloads and then the W-e upgrade would download nicely. (Oh, that
makes meso sad to remember those days - must move forwazrd).

Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-15 Thread Bryan Peterson via Talk
Well I do have one, albeit not a current one, so I can't take advantage of
this. It's still back in 8.4. But for some reason I'm unable to download a
demo of JFW to see if I can justify scraping together the funds for it. I've
tried with both IE and Firefox and the download gets to a certain point,
usually one where it still says 0 percent downloaded, and just stops there
for a while before failing.

I disagree with Steve on this one. I use JAWS v18 at work as a Help Desk
Analyst and I have switched via CTRL-2 to CTRL-1 and so on and JAWS does not
crash. There are other issues regarding losing focus at times but I've
observed these in Window-Eyes as well so I'm curious if these are Windows
issues at the moment particularly in Windows 7.

I still prefer Window-Eyes and I will use it until it ceases to function. I
actually have the free version on my work PC and glad I was able to obtain
it prior to today.

Good luck to everyone as we undergo this transition.

Wonder if I can at some point speak to you about switching to jaws 18 as I have
never used it in my life. I would definitely probably get the pro version since
I would have to use it at work and since I have 2 sma's might as well get the
pro and use it at home and work. My contact info work 212-8021633 8:00 am

RE: switch to Jaws

2017-05-15 Thread Amanda Lee via Talk
I know this is difficult for us all to accept as we're very loyal to
Window-Eyes. However, this is not a scam. I have known Aaron Smith and
worked closely with him to beta test Window-Eyes in the past. I have also
received an acknowledgement from VFO per my own request to migrate. It is a
sad realization for us all.

Hi Bob,

Well, there's no need to let ButchTimer stop you from switching to another
screen reader.
In fact, I'm planning to migrate all of my apps to stand-alone programs, that
is, they could be run with any screen reader, at least those apps which people
want to continue to use with other screen readers.

Hth,

Rod

RE: switch to Jaws

2017-05-15 Thread Steve Nutt via Talk
It's also very buggy. Just open Outlook 2016 and press Control-2 or
Control-3 to go into Contacts or Calendar and watch JAWS die.

All the best

Hello everybody on the list, should I make the switch to Jaws since
Window-Eyes is going away? Does Jaws have a control panel, you know where
you can allow jaws to not say blank when arrowing down or also from read to
end? Thanks very much.

If you do get a offer to switch to JAWS free, it won’t hurt. You can install

the way Window-Eyes acts with a particular program.

But, again, I wouldn’t just say to throw your copy of Window-Eyes out the

Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-14 Thread Chris Skarstad via Talk
I agree, unless a technology comes along that Window-eyes 9.5 simply
will not handle, I see absolutely no reason to just quit using a program
that I know works. That's kind of like Winamp. I've been using Winamp
for almost 20 years and it hasn't seen much active development lately,
but I still keep using it because it does everything I need it to do,
and it does it very well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Re: switch to Jaws

2017-05-14 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk

Most definitely, because for the foreseeable future, it is being developed.

However: be prepared for something of a learning curve. Lots of help
and training resources. Verbosity can be highly customised, but perhaps
not as easily as with Window-eyes. A major part of learning JAWS are
its tutor messages, which prompt for keys to activate as part of getting
the job done. And if you are learning specific applications, you can
create your own custom tutor messages.

The main training resource is in the form of a daisy structured
component within JAWS. And you can buy extra stuff as well - although I
haven't.

Best.

Vaughan.

RE: switch to Jaws

2017-05-14 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

If Window-Eyes is doing what you want, use it all you want, for now. Even if
there is an announcement about phasing it out, it shouldn’t be obsolete any
time soon. Just keep an eye out for things like Edge support. There will be a
time when you’ll need support for the Edge browser. I wouldn’t be in a hurry
to switch until that comes to fruition.

Again, if it’s working for you, keep using it for all it’s worth.
