Re: switch to Jaws
Hi David, Nothing to be ashamed of. Call yourself "Practical" rather than Cheap, Old Fashioned or Flat Broke. I too have a working XP system, running Window Eyes 8.4, and and several programs that frankly get the job done easier and better than their updated and upgraded offerings. That system is no longer on the Internet, that is why I have this here Windows 10 system. Although, I will have some disagree and roll their eyes, but I am starting to enjoy Windows 10 as much as I like the old Windows XP. Re: switch to Jaws
Guess I would have to ask what you mean by "Secure". I would say it as secure as any other program on the System. The Average System suffers more from its Operator, than from any attack from outside the system. Sure, there are Viruses, and Malware, and if you are careless, and some what Unlucky, you may fall to such a thing. My observations over the years is that many System troubles are not caused by Viruses, or Malware, but from some mishap caused by the System owner, or someone they allowed to use the System. Again, I am not saying that Viruses and other Bad Malware doesn't exist, but when the normal precautions are taken, violations from such Beasts are not usually the cause of System problems. So if Microsoft will Authenticate your Copy of Office 2003, then by all means, use it. RE: switch to Jaws
Yes, using the old with the new is the best experience. For example, I have a Windows XP computer hiding in the closet LOL! I use JAWS 13 on it, and I use programs on that computer that I cannot use on my win10 computers LOL! I am afraid to tell people this on other lists, because I might be a sinner in their eyes LOL! I love windows 10 and JAWS 18, but I can get certain jobs done better with the XP computer and JAWS 13 some times LOL! Well, are you experiencing any issues with Office 2003? If the answer is NO, I believe in leaving what's working great alone! Re: switch to Jaws
I agree with Mr. Vaughan. Before everyone starts fighting like kids here for no reason, go pay a listen to the podcast he's refering to. Most if not all of your questions are answered there, as well as there are two folks, one of them being Vaughan who give their viewpoints in regards to this. alot of this bickering and nonsense is getting anyone no where. VFO made decision to pull the plug, you can take it or leave it when it comes to the jaws offer, simple as that. Great contribution you did Vaughan an keep up the good work. Re: switch to Jaws
Bryan, it's too bad you feel this way. I think that perhaps you are associating Jaws with Freedom Scientific, meaning that if there were things that Freedom Scientific did, not VFO, you might be thinking that all the same bad experiences may happen again, or continue to happen. In any case, it's not FS, (Freedom Scientific) who is giving out free copies of Jaws. So, you are right about that. It's VFO who is doing this. can tell you that this is no scam. If you hold a retail license of Window-Eyes, you will get a license for Jaws. Maybe you think that the folks from the former GW Micro / Ai Squared are lying? I don't think so. *smile*. -- Raul A. I'm not altogether optimistic about the future of Window-Eyes, but at the same time I'm not going to stop using it unless I absolutely have to. As for this supposed offer of free copies of JFW for WE users I'm pretty sure it's a scam. I have a hard time imagining FS giving anyone free copies of JAWS under any circumstances. As for which screen reader I might switch to it probably wouldn't be JAWS, partly because I can't seem to download a demo of the latest version to try before I buy, but also because it's an absolute resource hog. I remember that from the twelve years I used it before switching to WE. Hi Steve, Up to quite recently, Window-Eyes used to do that as well. Since Microsoft made some significant accessibility updates, this stopped happening. I'm surprised Jaws does this. Hi Bob, Well, there's no need to let ButchTimer stop you from switching to another screen reader. In fact, I'm planning to migrate all of my apps to stand-alone programs, that is, they could be run with any screen reader, at least those apps which people want to continue to use with other screen readers. Re: switch to Jaws
I agree, unless a technology comes along that Window-eyes 9.5 simply will not handle, I see absolutely no reason to just quit using a program that I know works. That's kind of like Winamp. I've been using Winamp for almost 20 years and it hasn't seen much active development lately, but I still keep using it because it does everything I need it to do, and it does it very well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. On 5/14/2017 4:47 PM, Butch Bussen via Talk wrote: I plan to keep using window-eyes as long as it works. They're not going to make it diappear. Re: switch to Jaws
Most definitely, because for the foreseeable future, it is being developed. However: be prepared for something of a learning curve. Lots of help and training resources. Verbosity can be highly customised, but perhaps not as easily as with Window-eyes. A major part of learning JAWS are its tutor messages, which prompt for keys to activate as part of getting the job done. And if you are learning specific applications, you can create your own custom tutor messages. The main training resource is in the form of a daisy structured component within JAWS. And you can buy extra stuff as well - although I haven't. Best. Vaughan. RE: switch to Jaws
Hi: If Window-Eyes is doing what you want, use it all you want, for now. Even if there is an announcement about phasing it out, it shouldn’t be obsolete any time soon. Just keep an eye out for things like Edge support. There will be a time when you’ll need support for the Edge browser. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to switch until that comes to fruition. Again, if it’s working for you, keep using it for all it’s worth. RE: switch to Jaws
Lets just wait and see what happens. There is no official announcement yet about what is going to happen to Window-Eyes. Its all just speculation. That is what it is. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+skyt=shaw...@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Charles Short via Talk Sent: Sunday, May 14, 2017 11:53 AM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Subject: switch to Jaws Hello everybody on the list, should I make the switch to Jaws since Window-Eyes is going away? Does Jaws have a control panel, you know where you can allow jaws to not say blank when arrowing down or also from read to end? Thanks very much.
