Hi, I don’t write to this list that often, However, I feel I need to write now.
I’ve been using Window Eyes pretty much from the beginning. I’ve heard that
when companies merge the quality goes down. I hope this doesn’t happen. Also,
I’ve heard that companies outsource, the quality and also in some cases the
language barrior happens. I’m very happy that GW Micro hasn’t thought of such
things. I also like the fact that I can call and have quality help from a very
capable staff. Thanks much for that and keep up the good work. Gayle

Exactly. I bought my copy on the payment plan back in 2007. My concern with
this murger is that we'll see a drop in quality and an increase in price for
those who, like me, would prefer to purchase their software and have the
free tech support that entails.

That's the only way I got my very own copy of window eyes. Before then, I
borrowed somebody else's. But when the installment plan came in, I made it
legal and bought my own. The original computer was bought from a guy who
used to sell high tech, and I got window bridge with it. So, I had to
choose something else. And jaws was too expensive. Pam.

One thing I can say for GW Micro was that when I needed a new screen reader
back in 2007, GW Micro let me pay for Window Eyes on installments. I could
never have afforded it otherwise. As far as I know, Freedom Scientific does
not, and never has given people that option.

First of all I am not sure where the idea of SMA for Window Eyes is cheaper
than the SMA for JAWS. I had a choice of either paying fifty dollars for the
newest Window Eyes of buying an SMA for two hundred dollars and getting the
last update free. Window Eyes SMA is good for two versions. JAWS SMA for two
versions is one hundred eighty dollars if you use citrix metaframe or one
hundred twenty dollars for Home Version of JAWS which is good for two
upgrades. Freedom Scientific has never said you pay for an upgrade between
major versions or buy an SMA. An SMA for window eyes is two hundred dollars
for two upgrades.

Second of all Window Eyes has gotten rid of what I thought two of the best
features were. The first is the creation of set files and the second is to
be able to use the Window Eyes mouse more proficiently.

Third JAWS runs more smoothly than does Window Eyes at this point. It can
also start up in Windows 7 without messing up the video display and making
the screen unseeable.

Fourth while there are still issues with Window Eyes crashing Explorer and
other programs JAWS does not seem to have that issue.

Fifth I have been a Window Eyes user for better than ten years. I switched
to it from JAWS and at that time was very pleased but since version 9 there
seems to be more problems that do not get fixed. To avoid dealing with the
crashes I did renew my JAWS to current.

Sixth As to tech support most of the time lately you get the same from
either company. "It is your computer" Ok so sometimes that could be true but
it is also an easy out.

Seventh It is fine to support a company but one also needs to be honest
about things. Right now my number one recommendation would be NVDA. No
screen reader will ever be perfect but when one pays for an SMA one should
be able to expect improvements that can be noticed.

I can understand why the deal was made. It is indeed about profit for your
products but maybe Window Eyes should never have had a free version. Maybe
we should have seen at that time there would be other major changes that we
might not like.

Hopefully both programs will be available so that a person can choose which
problems they wish to deal with. So yes JAWS does have some issues but all
screen readers always will

One of the things that I've noticed with the new tech-support, is that I get
responses to my emails that one in the morning my time. How in my supposed to

2016-06-14 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Karyn,

Don't bank on my stupidity for your retort. I have an iPhone. No one
puts "Sent from my iPhone" on the bottom of their messages so people
will know they dictated. Apple puts it there by default as an
advertisement. Users have to figure out how to change or remove it. Most
don't. That's why you see it on virtually all messages sent from iPhones.

When I dictate I don't want to sound like an idiot. So I check and
correct. But that's just me. If you don't care, well, that's your choice.

Don't worry, Nick. There's still a stack of folks having a coronary over
Windows 10. But this is how soap operas work: one tragedy trumps the
previous one, and on and on it goes.

First of all I am not sure where the idea of SMA for Window Eyes is
cheaper than the SMA for JAWS. I had a choice of either paying fifty
dollars for the newest Window Eyes of buying an SMA for two hundred
dollars and getting the last update free. Window Eyes SMA is good for
two versions. JAWS SMA for two versions is one hundred eighty dollars
if you use citrix metaframe or one hundred twenty dollars for Home
Version of JAWS which is good for two upgrades. Freedom Scientific
has
never said you pay for an upgrade between major versions or buy an
SMA. An SMA for window eyes is two hundred dollars for two upgrades.

Second of all Window Eyes has gotten rid of what I thought two of the
best features were. The first is the creation of set files and the
second is to be able to use the Window Eyes mouse more proficiently.

Third JAWS runs more smoothly than does Window Eyes at this point. It
can also start up in Windows 7 without messing up the video display
and making the screen unseeable.

Fourth while there are still issues with Window Eyes crashing
Explorer
and other programs JAWS does not seem to have that issue.

Fifth I have been a Window Eyes user for better than ten years. I
switched to it from JAWS and at that time was very pleased but since
version 9 there seems to be more problems that do not get fixed. To
avoid dealing with the crashes I did renew my JAWS to current.

Sixth As to tech support most of the time lately you get the same
from
either company. "It is your computer" Ok so sometimes that could be
true but it is also an easy out.

Seventh It is fine to support a company but one also needs to be
honest about things. Right now my number one recommendation would be
NVDA. No screen reader will ever be perfect but when one pays for an
SMA one should be able to expect improvements that can be noticed.

I can understand why the deal was made. It is indeed about profit for
your products but maybe Window Eyes should never have had a free
version. Maybe we should have seen at that time there would be other
major changes that we might not like.

Hopefully both programs will be available so that a person can choose
which problems they wish to deal with. So yes JAWS does have some
issues but all screen readers always will

I think due to uia, and osm issues, set files are less useful than they used to
be, not anyones fault, just the way things are being displayed with no osm
makes a lot of what is in a set file much less valuable than it used to be.

Freedom Scientific has
never said you pay for an upgrade between major versions or buy an

Fourth while there are still issues with Window Eyes crashing Explorer
and other programs JAWS does not seem to have that issue.

Fifth I have been a Window Eyes user for better than ten years. I
switched to it from JAWS and at that time was very pleased but since
version 9 there seems to be more problems that do not get fixed. To
avoid dealing with the crashes I did renew my JAWS to current.

Sixth As to tech support most of the time lately you get the same from
either company.

Hi Chris: It was my fault mentioning trade regulations - didn't think about
the possibility they were in financial trouble - should have since I have
thought that for several years now but panic seems to temporarily block
rational thinking sometimes.
I said it would likely do no good contacting government in my last post
after a calmer reflection on the situation.
Had the folks at WindowEyes not done this they may have had to just turn off
the lights, lock the door and go home sooner rather than later.
At least this way there may be a smooth transition for us clients into
whatever the future will hold.
Doug, Aaron and Dan will do what they can - of that I am confident.
We have known them for many, many years and they are pretty good people me
thinks and quite professional.

RE: My Take On things.

2016-06-14 Thread Steve Clower via Talk
Thanks for that, Chris.

Two thoughts that I'd like to throw out there for consideration are these:

1. we now have the top talent in the AT industry working under one umbrella.
Thus, instead of competing, we have the opportunity to cooperate with each
other. Yes; this means the Window-Eyes and JAWS groups could potentially
collaborate on projects, sharing the expertise and knowledge we have eachgained
over the past 20+ years. From that standpoint, all of our customers benefit.

2. VFO combined really does have accessibility covered across the entire low
vision/blind spectrum. Not only do we have the best magnification and screen
reading products, but hardware as well. As a staunch supporter of Braille, I
personally am excited that we once more have Braille display technology
expertise in-house.

Some of you have already assumed the worst that this entire venture was done to
kill off the Window-Eyes and ZoomText brands. While only time can tell when and
how our product lines evolve, VFO has recognized that each product fills a
certain nitch. People choose Window-Eyes over JAWS for a reason; likewise MagIC
versus ZoomText. These reasons are important, and I'm confident they will be
considered as our leadership moves forward. But let's give them a chance to do
that.

Finally, while I can understand and sympathize with how much of a shock this
news brings, yelling and writing angry messages (while everyone's right) isn't
productive. I would ask that we get back to helping one another with
Window-Eyes, as this is the main purpose of the Talk list. Rest assured that
the appropriate people have read your thoughts, both positive and negative.

Thanks,
Steve

I think due to uia, and osm issues, set files are less useful than they
used to be, not anyones fault, just the way things are being displayed
with no osm makes a lot of what is in a set file much less valuable than
it used to be.

Hi,

I'm not certain precisely what you mean when you say that the creation of
set files was taken away.
Set files are still used and can be created in Window-Eyes to the present
day.

be able to expect improvements that can be noticed.

I can understand why the deal was made. It is indeed about profit for your
products but maybe Window Eyes should never have had a free version. Maybe
we should have seen at that time there would be other major changes that we
might not like.

Hopefully both programs will be available so that a person can choose which

Hi, Evan,

Someone on this list told about contacting FS for the same
