Re: [OSM-talk] Deleted Place names in the Philippines

2008-01-15 Thread Ian Haylock
Hi,

Still no reply from this message ?

Surely someone with osm database access can just roll back the edits in the
time frame jan 14th 2008 9pm-12am (3 hours)

The area in question should be covered by these lats' / lon's

top left : lat 19.9325 lon 115.6431

bottom right : lat 5.3102 lon 127.9038

I have trashed parts of Manila as well so there is far too much to put back
manually.

I don't know how it happened. I was using the latest version of josm, and had
loaded the above coordinates. Then I was fixing errors and uploading them to
the database. I finished some fixes, then went out leaving josm uploading. Only
to come back home to find out it had deleted LOADS and I mean LOADS of data in
the Philippines.

I also have an osm file of the philippines that I saved before the error. If
someone can tell me how to use that to fix the mistake I will do so myself.

Cheers, Ian

[OSM-talk] voting ended? - population

2008-01-15 Thread Robin Paulson
does anyone know what's happening with this tag?

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Proposed_features/Population

it appears to have been voted on, but it isn't really clear what, the
tags were only added after voting had completed. i think it's rejected
(11 yes to one no), but the last comment implies not. also, there are
lots of questions in the comments that are unanswered. anyone? it
wasn't announced on talk

personally, i think this is a good candidate for data to include in
wikipedia and link to with some sort of on-screen tag, as has been
discussed recently

As of tonight Alaska is fully uploaded (the last bit thats going right
now is the panhandle that stretches to the southwest). There aren't too
many breaks in it overall, especially compared to the west coast of BC,
though most of the errors showing there are reversed single way islands
that need to be cleaned up yet, see
http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/coastlines.html?lat=65.56080039181714&lon=-149.433288568253&zoom=4.

And cleaning those up are fairly quick and easy if you want to compile
the newest validator plugin that has the way direction checker code in
it (I haven't uploaded a jar of it yet as I haven't got the detection
for islands that are made up multiple ways done)

I will look at getting Newfoundland done tonight and probably Hudson bay
as well, then start wrapping back south along Labrador and Quebec.

Hi,

Well for some reason PGS often has coastlines like

--+
  +--+
 +--+
+--+
   +--+

using a lot of points, where in OSM you can just do

  +
   \
\
 \
  \
   +

so it should well be possible to have the whole PGS coastline with 14
million points... but obviously we haven't simplified enough.

No need to run any scripts:

I try to keep what I'm working on updated within a day or two, currently
I'm finishing off the uploads for the northern edges of Alaska and
starting to move east along the Yukon and Northwest Territories of
Canada, but a lot of this will need to be manually done since the ice
tends to interfere with the PGS data as I've been seeing.

see http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/coastlines.html for current coastline
status

anyone who wants to help with the coastline import, but feels unable or
unwilling to upload an area themselves, might want to consider cleaning up
some of the errors shown on the above map.

I'm uploading India at present (have done west coast of India, Pakistan),
and am in process of uploading and checking East Coast of India.

I've noticed that Australia has been completed in the last day or so.

You might want to look at :
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Almien_coastlines_%28PGS%29

Sometimes people keep that updated as they go, sometimes not.

It made my recent upload of Eastern India look terrible (loads of errors),
but I've now deleted the low res tracing for the affected area.

Coastline uploads should be tracked here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Almien_coastlines_%28PGS%29

How up to date it is I have no idea...

I was doing some coastlines for the Carolinas region. If all you want
is the coastline uploaded without special checking, I can do a lot
more. I stopped running it because I ran into a potlache user in
Charleston, SC that was hot to delete stuff and I ended up having to
readd coastline several times.

Out of interest, how many automated imports are running at the moment,
and where? I've been watching your checker and hoping that the Eastern
Seaboard of the US would appear, so that we can use the improved
shapefiles asap, but it doesn't look like anyone is running
almein_coastlines or similar for that area. Are they running anywhere
else? Is someone willing to do so?

Rather than immediately belittle someone's effort, how about turn it into an
education opportunity. I'm sure there will be plenty of new users who have
no idea that we have a coastline import process available at all. An update
on the import and adjustments might be handy right now.

The easiest way to fix this is to cut the phillipines out of the last
planet dump and load it into JOSM, pick all the deleted objects and
add and remove a dummy tag and hit upload. I've consider setting up a
server deliberatly a week out of date to make this easier, but you
should be able to do this by hand.

You can also try extracting them out of the planet diffs but that's harder...

Hope this helps,

[OSM-talk] Tracing coastline by hand unnecessarily

2008-01-15 Thread Martijn van Oosterhout
Hi,

To my surprise this morning I opened up the coastline checker and saw
that south east asia had been done. Yay! I thought, until I noticed
the resolution was complete crap. Segment lengths of 50km not at all
uncommon. I'd be surprised if osmarender will display it properly at
all.

To anyone thinking of doing this, please don't. We have reasonably
high quality coastline data, please use it. Use landsat to fix any
gaps. But segments like that just ask to be deleted and redone. This
kind of bad data is worse than none at all...

1. Open Potlatch
2. Go to the area you want
3. Press 'U' (for undelete)
4. Select a red line denoting a deleted way
5. Click the little padlock in the bottom left to unlock it
6. Deselect to upload

Repeat steps 4-6 for every way.

If all the nodes from the way are still there, but the way itself has
been deleted, Potlatch won't pick it up in step 3. Instead you'll need
to delete one of the nodes yourself first, then press 'U'.

You can't undelete POI nodes yet. If svn remains stable enough that I
can spend some time coding rather than repeatedly upgrading my Rails
install then I'll fix that. ;)

cheers
Richard

I've now implemented an algorithm for finding a good center-point for
areas. It's already commited to svn as revision 6390.

The algorithm is explained in human-readable form at
http://bob.cakebox.net/poly-center.php

I haven't yet implemented handling of areas with holes, though I think
I know how to handle it.

I also have some ideas on how to further improve the last part of the
algorithm, going from a set of points inside the polygon to a single
center point, though I'm unsure how easy it will be to implement these
in xslt. Suggestions welcome!
