Re: [OSM-talk] Subway Routing in Maps.Me

2017-12-25 Thread Jan Martinec
Hello, same issue here: retagging a single, multi-purpose heavy rail line
(out of tens of similar others) to light rail (which it is not) so that
one data consumer picks up on it? That is blatant mapping for a renderer,
and was reverted by locals who actually have OTG knowledge (in this case,
yours truly).

Also, not related just to that mass retagging: if you're armchair mapping,
great! But please, do respond to changeset comments - maintaining radio
silence, especially on questions about an unusual edit, is somewhat
suspicious (and in this specific case, it was one of the reasons for a
revert).

Other than that, I like the feature - a lot; didn't have time yet to bring
the local metro up to speed, but it's one of my goals for the new year :)

Thanks for your work and best of luck,
Jan "Piskvor" Martinec

why not real rail as well? E.g. in Berlin it is much more convenient to take a
normal train from the airport (SXF) to the centre than it is to take a light
rail train (too many stops). Similarly in Rome, most local trains aren’t light
rail and you’d miss a lot of connections if ignoring railways.

Ilya, it’s great to see intermodal routing implemented in maps.me.

Still this recent concerted action showed yet another time the problems with
people editing out of their familiar local context, and I’d like to use the
opportunity of this thread to point this out and invite other mappers to check
for similar problems in their area (and fix them).
Some months ago a user with a non-local locale had changed a lot of regional
railway routes from rail to light rail in “my area”. Problem is, those are real
railway lines, not light rail. You and some people who follow you have then
used the presence of (only) light rail routes as indication that also the
stations should be light rail stations. This led to nice consistency, different
users mapping different objects (routes and stations) in a consistent way -
just that it was blatantly wrong.

Please, don’t do it. Do not perform edits that require local knowledge in areas
where you don’t have this knowledge. Do not assume you can deduct missing data
from other map data, especially in a field like public transport, where few
mappers are active, and where bugs and errors might sleep for longer than in
other fields (this point actually might improve with more people using the
data, and this is of course a very positive aspect of maps.me using this data
for routing).

Again, great to see this now implemented in maps.me.

Cheers,

[OSM-talk] Subway Routing in Maps.Me

2017-12-25 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi,

You might have noticed an unusually high attention to public transport mapping
in OpenStreetMap recently. There was a validator, a big proposal that got
rejected, and another one that isn't yet. You might have seen subway route
relations in your city edited, to better conform to the PTv2 schema. Why? What
was all that for?

Last week we have published MAPS.ME 8.0 for Android and iOS. If you plan a
route in one of 74 cities, it will suggest using a subway or a light rail
network. That includes London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Moscow, Yokohama, Dubai,
Lima and many others. What I'd like to highlight, is that zero GTFS feeds were
used for that. All the data comes from OpenStreetMap.

http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Zverik/diary/43020

This is without doubt the first time somebody has used public transport
relations from OSM for routing, considering the state of these relations three
months ago. I see the development of the public transport schemas being tied to
just rendering, and maybe this would make them better. Who knows, maybe in a
year even overground routes in OSM could be used for anything other than
highlighting roads.

I'd like to thank you for discussing the proposal and mapping, and to ask you
for help mapping the rest of the cities. Especially the United States and asian
countries. I am willing to explain anything that is unclear, possibly improving
the Metro Mapping page.

Thanks,
Ilya

currently the most effective way is to mention the problem in #osm-dev

As I'm not on IRC, I'll cc the dev list in (not sure if that is the same
entity).

In Brazil we call such marketing advert "a shot in the foot" (sorry for the
