Re: [Talk-ca] Ottawa Missing Map Event In November Planning
Hi John, Good points. We talked abit about this at our meeting last Friday and decided that we'll have a quick introduction to OSM and a beginners "get going" walk through. Thinking max 30 minutes for this. We'll ensure we have folks wandering around or that can be flagged down for help. Many of us, including myself are still learning (lots of detail with OSM) but we want to pass on what we can:) We'll primarily focus on using iD to keep it simple plus use a tasking manager (assuming the HOT one). We're thinking of printing a few large maps that we can use as discussion points for teaching. Cheers, Richard -- Please note: I only check email a few times during business hours. Re: [Talk-ca] Ottawa Missing Map Event In November Planning
We don't have a venue yet. One of our members is looking into several options that we we'll select from but definitely open to suggestions. At this point, free or a minimum cost would be ideal. We'd like to see grow this into a more regular occurring event. Cheers, Richard -- Please note: I only check email a few times during business hours. [Talk-ca] Adding Buildings + Leisure + Corrections To Ottawa Map Over Holiday Season
Hi Folks, I've created a new mapping task for the Ottawa area [1]. I really want to make our local map super awesome:) I see adding buildings as one of the biggest projects we can undertake, so that local mappers like myself could start adding address data from local surveys. The task focuses on buildings and leisure areas but also asks those mapping to correct any obvious issues encountered. I understand it's a large area to map but I see this as a long term project. It's also something I'd like to use to encourage new local mappers to get involved with through our monthly meetups. Let me know what you think and if I'm missing anything in the instructions to make this easier to work with! Join me over the holidays:) Cheers, Richard [1] http://tasks.osmcanada.ca/project/9 -- Please note: I only check email a few times during business hours. Re: [Talk-ca] Adding Buildings + Leisure + Corrections To Ottawa Map Over Holiday Season
Hi Folks, Thanks so much for the great feedback! Update: - I've removed the mention of postcode collection. I'm not sure of the legal aspect of collection as raised in an earlier thread. - Add several priority areas to help focus the mapping. - The generated tiles are the smallest the task manager will provide through the interface. There is an option to further split the tiles when a task is selected for editing. When you click Start Mapping, underneath the drop down for editor of choice is Task to big? Split. Click this to subdivide the tile further. Really excited for this:) Again, thanks for your feedback and help! Have a great afternoon! [Talk-ca] Updating the Wiki Page for Ottawa and Ontario
Hi Folks, I've started to clean up the Ottawa wiki page [1]. I'd really like to use this space for the local community to learn, share and work together to improve our map. The page hasn't been touched since late 2013 (before I found it). My initial approach is one of keeping the older information; when I have more time or others want to jump in and review the older material we can figure out how best to work/reorganize it. For the moment I've been adding links and information that has come up at the monthly Ottawa meetups. I've also pointed the domain www.osmottawa.ca to point to the Ottawa wiki page. Was pointing the address to the GitHub hosted page we had set up initially to make it easier for folks to find us. If nothing else at this point, the shorter domain is so much easier to remember:) Longer term, I would love to figure out how we in Ontario could make better use of the Ontario wiki page [2]. These town/city focused sub pages are great and I'd love to really make use of them to improve our map! At this point I would love to start the discussion of how we can revamp the wiki pages, what's the best approach; how do we get more folks involved etc. Really looking forward to hearing back from you:) Cheers, Richard [1] https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:Ontario:Ottawa [2] https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:Ontario -- Please note: I only check email a few times during business hours.
