I understand the concern however I feel a balance has to be struck. We are
aiming to provide a "SotM cookbook" but this is stalled since September due
to lack of resource.

Having ran 2013 in the open and published 2015 meeting minutes, my view is
that you gain valuable support by good project management, breaking work
down in to small chunks and providing short summaries of tasks. People are
generally too busy to read reams and reams of meeting notes. I expect you
often come across this in your day job ("why am I being asked this/why has
someone done that - clearly they didn't read the notes"!!).

I don't get project management right all the time but I'm trying to
improve. Hopefully the plans for 2017 demonstrate an improvement.

If there is a specific thing that you are missing then we could try to
prioritise that. Just ask :-)

Well - in my eyes transparency is not something optional that can be
added when time permits in case of a working group of the OSMF.

Also keep in mind that you are probably depriving yourselves from a lot
of valuable support this way. I for example would never participate in
such a process from either the bidding side or the evaluation/decision
side without at least basic transparency in the decision making
process.

And the presence of confidential information somewhere is usually a
straw man argument in transparency cases. Confidential data is almost
never required to make a decision process transparent.

But this is just my personal view of course and i am not in a position
to impose this on anyone so it is safe to just ignore my opinion here.

The process of bidding is described at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_of_the_Map_2017/Call_for_venues

The SotM working group switched to using GitHub as a way of tracking our
work (we use it for the Issues/Ticket system rather than code) and this is
available to all SotM WG members and all OSMF Board members. We have it set
to private due to the fact that it includes financial information and
personal information (contact details, and info required for the
scholarship programme). Making this available would likely breach data
protection and would expose the contracts/finances of our suppliers.

Having said that, we remain open to people joining the Working Group, am
happy to share info with those organising other OSM events (e.g. regional
SotMs) and are currently investigating how to facilitate knowledge share
across the Local Chapters and Regional Events.

Becoming more transparent would require extra admin work, and given that
our working group members already commit a huge amount of volunteer hours
to the planning of SotM, this is something that we would need help with.

I'm sorry this is not the answer you were hoping for.

Re: [OSM-talk] SOTM EU

2017-01-31 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

As noted it's not possible to give a negative response as SotM EU is much
more fluid than the OSMF SotM (there is not a designated group of people to
ask - it just happens when their is appetite).

I can however give the response from the OSMF SotM Working Group as such:

- We received 2 bids this year; one from Japan the other from Italy.
- We worked with both teams to fully explore the options; at times this
included an ambitious programme of two events in one year (comprising a
traditional SotM in Japan and an "unconference" style event in Italy.
- Ultimately this fell through and as such there is no planned European
event from the OSMF SotM Working group.
- As always we are grateful for the bids to host State of the Map (OSMF)
and we are happy to help interested groups prepare future bids.

I hope this clarifies things a bit. I will follow up with a separate emails
on the Japan event and the process for 2018.

Best regards,

You're asking a simple question of an undefined group of people.

I would suggest that the lack of an answer is equivalent to the answer
being negative - any one person could answer positively but nobody can
answer negatively without knows the state of mind of every other person.

[OSM-talk] SOTM-EU 2014 visitors by car from outside of Germany: environment stickers

2014-06-11 Thread steggink

Hi,

For those who are coming by car to SOTM-EU 2014 in Karlsruhe, and
especially for those who do not come from Germany, please be aware
that in many cities you need an environmental sticker. See [1] for
more information, and see [2] for a basic map. It also includes the
conference area.

Nowadays, you need a green sticker for Karlsruhe, so if you currently
have a yellow or even a red one, you're out of luck.

My experience is that at a TüV-office it is no problem to get a
sticker for a foreign car. It took only 15 to 30 minutes or so. If you
apply for a sticker in your own country, it might take a little
longer, so your best bet is to look for a TüV-office in Germany.

Regards,

Frank

True, but a better map is of course

http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/61348

If you didn't have a sticker and wanted to be 100% legal then you could
park just outside the zone and walk five minutes to the conference location.

Having said that, there's quite a number of cars on the roads here
without a green sticker and nobody seems to give a damn. Might be
different for foreign cars though.

My experience is that at a TüV-office it is no problem to get a sticker
 for a foreign car.

Provided the car meets the environmental standards, which is generally a
non-issue for petrol cars but if you have a diesel that's older than
about 10 years or so, you might not be so lucky. My car required an EUR
2000 investment before I could sign up for a green sticker ;)

If you have been considering attending an OpenStreetMap conference,
and you can't get to State of the Map in Argentina this November,
consider SotM-EU in Germany, in June.

Previous SotM-EU were wonderful. Well worth the trip.

[OSM-talk] SOTM-EU talk submission extended

2014-02-26 Thread Christoph Hormann

Hello everyone,

the Call for Presentations for the SOTM EU conference taking place in
Karlsruhe in June is extended until March 17.

We have already received a lot of interesting talks and would like to
give everyone who is preparing a submission a bit more time. Also if
you have not yet planned to submit something or maybe have missed the
previous announcements now is your chance.

We specifically want to invite OSM contributors from all over Europe
(and beyond) to participate and submit their topics. Talks can be
submitted on the conference website:

http://sotm-eu.org/en/presentations/new

where you can also find further information on the event.

[OSM-talk] SotM-EU 2014 - Call for Presentations

2013-12-17 Thread Christoph Hormann

Hello everyone,

i am pleased to announce the Call for Presentations for the SOTM-EU 2014
in June next year. Please communicate this to anyone who might might
be interested in presenting something at the conference. The full text
and links can also be found at the conference website
(http://sotm-eu.org/en/pages/cfp)

Call for Presentations

Now as the cold time of the year is approaching many of you are spending
the long and dark evenings working on some OpenStreetMap related
projects like some tool, some mapping project or some creative use of
the OpenStreetMap data. Maybe you think it would be nice to share your
work with a larger European community next summer? Then we invite you
to submit a presentation to the State of the Map Europe (SOTM-EU)
conference in Karlsruhe, Germany in June next year.
Where and when

The SOTM-EU 2014 will take place in Karlsruhe from June 13-15, 2014. The
conference will be hosted at Hochschule Karlsruhe. On Friday and
Saturday there will be talks, and Sunday will be a hack day for
practical work and discussion.
Your presentation

We would like SOTM-EU to be a platform for OpenStreetMap communities
from across Europe, as well as for geodata professionals, cartographers
and researchers, for sharing experiences, stories and knowledge around
the OpenStreetMap project. In case

* you are developing a tool related to OpenStreetMap for mapping, data
processing, visualization or other applications
* you have some mapping project, ideas on tagging or an innovative
mapping technique
* you are using OpenStreetMap data in a business project
* you are doing research based on OpenStreetMap data
* you are working on something else related to OpenStreetMap or that
will be of interest for the community

we invite you to submit a presentation proposal to the SOTM-EU programme
committee. Are you involved with a local project anywhere in Europe?
SOTM-EU is a great opportunity to present it to a Europe-wide audience.
Regular talks will be 20 minutes long with five minutes for discussion.
In addition we will offer the opportunity for shorter five minute
lightning talks. You can submit both types of presentation in advance
on the website. However, for the lightning talks there will also be the
possibility of spontaneous registration at the conference. The
conference language is English.

Your submissions will be reviewed by a programme committee consisting of
OpenStreetMap community members from various parts of Europe as well
from the Hochschule Karlsruhe.
Talk submission

Talks can be submitted on the SOTM-EU web site
(http://sotm-eu.org/en/presentations/new) where you will also find more
information and updates on the conference. You should submit by
February 28.

We're looking forward to seeing you in Karlsruhe in June!

On behalf of the SOTM-EU 2014 program committee,

i...@sotm-eu.org. Same if you have any ideas that you'd like the
 organisers to consider.

We'll be distributing this announcement to the dev and talk lists
as well as to talk-fr and talk-de. If you are on one of the other
regional European lists, we would be grateful if you could forward
 the announcement.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Karlsruhe next year!

Hi,

today I have the pleasure to announce that we'll be holding SotM-EU
2014 in Karlsruhe, on 13-15 June. We've set up the web page at
www.sotm-eu.org and we'll be posting news there and on @sotmeu on Twitter.

We'll be trying to emulate the success of the 2011 Vienna conference,
bringing together everyone who does anything interesting in with
OpenStreetMap in Europe.

The call for papers will be out soon, with registration to open early
2014. We already have a good international programme committee preparing
that but if you'd like to join the programme committee or otherwise help
organising the conference (or aspects of it), don't be shy and write to
i...@sotm-eu.org.

[OSM-talk] SOTM-EU 2014

2013-09-18 Thread Frederik Ramm
Hi,

tonight at the Karlsruhe pub meet we discussed a potential SOTM-EU
2014. (Nothing's public about SOTM 2014 yet but it is unlikely to be in
Europe again.)

There was some enthusiasm about doing it in Karslruhe in Germany. We
have a large local team and considerable conference experience through
past Linux conferences, and there's enough tech companies around to go
looking for sponsors.

Is anyone planning anything similar, or any smaller conferences in
Europe that might clash with an Europe-wide event in Karlsruhe?

Nobody has made any plans about dates yet but it would probably rather
be before the summer than after, and if we went ahead with the plan we'd
of course want to avoid any schedule trouble.

Bye
Frederik

(Just to make this clear, I am writing this solely in my capacity as a
Karlsruhe pub meet regular; it has nothing to do with OSMF.)

[OSM-talk] SOTM-EU 2012 ???

2012-01-23 Thread Michael Kugelmann

[Deutsch unterhalb]
Hello,

after a great SOTM-EU in Vienna in 2011 and the decission to host the
SOTM 2012 in Tokio:

are there any ideas/plans for a SOTM-EU 2012?

I really hope that the SOTM in Tokio has a good sucess and lots of
participants. But for some people from the big mapper community in
Europe Japan might be too far (and Tokio is not cheap).

Best regards,
Michael.

PS: sorry for crossposting, but I hope to start a discussion within the
European community about this issue. And if we want to do a conference
we might need to start soon with the preparation.

[English above]
Hallo,

I'd be interested in attending such a meeting; possibly in helping to
organize, depending on where it's hosted.

[OSM-talk] SOTM-EU starts in Vienna on Friday / Lightning Talks

2011-07-09 Thread Frederik Ramm

Hi,

in 6 days (or make that 5.5), SOTM-EU is going to open in Vienna.
Here's the list of attendees http://sotm-eu.org/attendees, here's the
schedule http://sotm-eu.org/schedule, and here's the registration URL if
you spontaneously decide to come: https://sotm-eu.org/registration

I'll be hosting the Lightning Talks sessions. If you already know that
you're planning to hold one of those 5-minute talks presenting your pet
project, software, or new tagging schema to an interested audience, it
would make my work easier if you email me in advance.

I'm excited to be meeting many of you in Vienna. The talk lineup is
great - for example, it'll be the first time for me to hear first-hand
from the authors of Maperitive, Keepright, Overpass (was Server Side
Script) or Mapnik Metawriters.

Bye
Frederik
