Very good news :)

By a donation we are able distribute data to osm, google and yahoo.

Is there a license text available somwehere?

How do we get further on uploading on osm?

The ortophotos could probably be uploaded to OpenAerialMap.

For the rest of the data, it would probably be best if someone made them
available for easy download?

Data are in DGN and TAB formats.

We might need help due to slow internet connections in the Arctic.

Hi Karl,

That's great news :-) The difficulty is that most often, organizations
who turn up with large amounts of data to import (as you have) get help
from an experienced local member of the community - because they are the
people with the most interest in the import happening. However, it's
quite possible that either there are no OSM people in Greenland or, if
there are, that they are not on this mailing list. And I don't think
there's a registry of where people live (odd for a mapping project...).

You could ask the wiki admins for a list of accounts who have set theit
default language to Kalaallisut, but it's quite possible that most
people leave it as the default of English. Or you could try contacting
WikiProject Denmark http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Denmark for help
- there's a list of people on that page.

2009-02-14 Thread Kærast
Hi,

I tried downloading shapefiles from the website, and all I was getting
was a message that the file was empty and there might not be any data.
The map data certainly looks very detailed, so it would be awesome if
we could get this imported.

By a donation we are able distribute data to osm, google and yahoo.

Does that mean we need to make a donation in order to receive the
data? I'm confused. If not, you need to confirm that licensing is all
ok.

If it's going to be a case of tracing the available imagery through
WMS then a josm plugin similar to the cadastre one is what is needed.
In which case talking to the people behind that would be a good idea.
Otherwise, I can handle shapefile imports (just about), but it needs
coordinating properly as there is rather a lot to import.

I'd suggest starting a page on the wiki to discuss how the import is to
happen, and if possible get all the data out of the arctic so that it
is available for fast download by OSM users. Looking at itoworld for
Nuuk there are a couple of people who have been mapping the area
recently, so there certainly are active mappers in the country.
