Re: [OSM-talk] MapRoulette - cryptic tasks

2020-02-27 Thread Blake Girardot
For what it might be worth.

I know nothing about this map roulette project, but in reading the
instructions, what jumps out to me is that imagery changes
dramatically between zoom levels, especially on the higher/more zoomed
in levels 17, 18, 19 range.

And often gets older the closer you zoom in. So even tracing with one
imagery URL, depending on what zoom level you are at, you will see
radically different age imagery and maybe different buildings, roads
etc.

That could be one reason someone cares what zoom level the tracing was done at.

Cheers,
Blake

Re: [OSM-talk] MapRoulette - cryptic tasks

2020-02-26 Thread Pierre Béland via talk
Hi Martin,

If we want to monitor revisions for a specific territory we take care of, I see
that Maproulette Challenge offers a map where we can see I suppose individual
objects/tasks for the area. Zooming in and out of the area, the numbers
constantly change.  If I zoom-in, I cannot see the individual tasks neither see
simply what is the object of the challenge for these tasks.

https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges?challengeSearch=-71.55601501464845%2C46.70691089512589%2C-70.99777221679689%2C46.908998382774506=intersectingMapBounds=created%2C

Could MapRoulette API help to monitor an area by rapidly providing  a list of
individual tasks + OSM object Id (ie. Challenge -OSM object id, problem / tag
to correct, solution / tag proposed )  ?

Could you give example of API call for this ?

Everything maproulette.org needs to function. (Generated) documentation is
here: https://maproulette.org/docs/swagger-ui/index.html . For some advanced
use cases, you may inspect the calls made to the API when running queries on
maproulette.org. The extendedFind call powers Challenge search and browsing.
Most GET requests including this one do not require an API key. If you do want
to use calls that require one, you would find yours at
https://maproulette.org/user/profile at the bottom.

Thanks.  What does that API do?

Sorry, that was incorrect, I misunderstood -- "Mapping Human" is the
MapRoulette project name[1]. Projects are a way to organize Challenges in
groups. Clicking on the 'Contact Owner' link reveals their username,
EditConscript in this case.

Hi,

This would be their OSM username. There is no internal messaging system in
MapRoulette, clicking the 'message' link would actually send you to the OSM
message screen.

There is ample documentation on how to create challenges and best practices for
doing so, but as with all things OSM, it is up to the community to maintain
quality standards in mapping. I have reached out to the community before asking
for volunteers to help monitor new challenges, there was no interest then,
perhaps this is a good time to ask again? You can see the newest created
challenges using https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges?sort=created, there
is also an API call you can use. Drop me a line if you want some more guidance.

AFAIK no.
I opened issue on maproulette GitHub
requesting taking down this task as
it is not something that improves OSM.
I also contacted main (sole?) editor
adding this tags, maybe (s)he also
created this mr task?___

In this particular example the person creating the task instructions and
the person doing the editing appear to be one and the same.

I don't think that the top level goal ("trace some imagery!") is a
problem here; it's the suggestion to add some crap to the changeset
comments that is - the user appears to be using maproulette as a way of
astroturfing their editing style.

That said, there have been some problem Maproulette tasks in the past* -
some just invite users to perform mechanical edits ("Change sub_station
to substation" https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=62996
was one example, one that resulted in lots of erroneous embassies was
another).

Presumably anyone can sign up at maproulette.org and create challenges,
just like they can sign up to edit in OSM?  Perhaps maproulette.org
challenges would benefit from similar feedback mechanisms so as a way of
people saying "I don't think that this challenge is a good idea as
written because...", in a similar way that people can comment to
changeset discussions?
