Re: [talk-ph] new high-res images available from digitalglobe
Kai and all, Yes we have secured a space in the OSM-dev server. I have been uploading the files for generation of a mapnik like tiles which everyone can use in any OSM editor. Almost halfway the uploading process. Will keep you updated for progress. One option to host the images might be on the OSM-dev server. It has a fair amount of space and can be used for projects to help expand OSM, so hosting aerial imagery from which one can trace for OSM seems well within its intended purposes. It currently also hosts some out-of-copyright maps of the UK for tracing, which is similar in nature. I guess it will depend a bit on how large the images are and under what conditions they are allowed to be used, but it is worth asking the server admins for a dev-account. Another alternative could potentially be the new dev server Strato donated to the German OSM-chapter.
Or can I compare topology of the streets with the external map? See if I got the village placement right and adjust it? IMHO (IANAL) you can always compare your map to others, but if the don't match, you will not know, who's right, unless you recontroll. i'd agree - it's OK to compare OSM to proprietary maps and use that to figure out where needs surveying. but it's not OK to take information from that proprietary map - if there is a difference then you'll have to go out and survey the difference. so (imho) it wouldn't be OK to adjust village placement based on proprietary maps; if there's a difference you'd have to look at other allowable sources like Y! aerial imagery or out-of-copyright maps, or go out and survey it with a GPS. cheers, matt Thanks. The reason I asked that was that I frequently forget where the GPS trace was taken - was it a road or a track, which village or whatever else. Re: [OSM-talk] Merchandise
Well, wikipedia have now instaled extension that allows you to order printed books via pediapress - you pick up some articles, then you see how many pages it is and you can download it as PDF or order printed copy. We could perhaps do something similar with OSM - someone chooses scale and area, then atlas is created. OK, this would probably be computationally more intensive per page than just some article with some words and few pictures - question is, can we offload this task to user machines? Some java applet, that will download OSM XML, then let user customize it (whether to have a legend or not, street index, whether to include more detailed plan of some interesting areas in the atlas, etc ...) and generate the PDF and send it back for printing could do the job, while keeping server load at acceptable values (since whoever wants the PDF will use his/her CPU power to generate it :). The only caveat is that pediapress now only prints in black and white - color is planned for future. So either push them to make also colored books, or find some other company that can do this :) Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

One of the options i was thinking of is lulu.com where you can self-publish books... as well as multiple editors. (and they print colour) :-) So i was thinking that all those interested in the publishing of a book could be listed as editors, and working on a wikmapbo...@openstreetmap.orgdiscussion list, create the book. And just upload and update the pages. mediafire.com is a good place to store the png files or openoffice draw files. www.lulu.com ... as once the template that everyone likes is done... it can be shared and we all use it. (a template per type of map we want) (btw, my $ making book (story book) would be self published that way, having friends family help edit) BTW, maposmatic WILL become international :) and thanks John, that looks cool. Hi, I meant Do all the polygon parts get their correct names in rendering, that is, lake the name given for the outer ring and each islands the name given for the inner ring. Maybe also Can export utilities make a correct output of a lake polygon as a polygon with holes and islands as separate polygons for non-OSM programs which cannot handle polygon holes as separate features. I believe that for example PostGIS used for Mapnik rendering belongs to those non-OSM programs which might have troubles with inner rings having just a name tag. Re: [talk-au] How to tag a non-existent road
I would rather that we don't have non existant roads on OSM. Twenty plus years ago, I heard a comment that maps had deliberate errors in them so that the mapmakers could find if others were copying their work. In my job of driving around Australia checking mobile phone coverage, I am constantly reading maps (provided by the company) to work out a driving plan, and relying on a Garmin Nuvi to confirm where I am. I did 193,000 km in 18 months in my first car and now I do about 100,000 km per year (in my second car) because our driving is now concentrated on city and suburban areas. (where people live, work and play) I work out driving plans that can take weeks to complete ie, all of NSW west of the Great Divide, and all of SW Western Australia. Both took about 8 weeks to complete. I take great pride in doing what I call efficient driving where I cover the greatest distance and area in the least time and fuel used. I used $22,000 plus worth of fuel in the first 12 months. I also 'cut it fine' a lot of the time with no buffer for time if there is an error. I go out for 10 working days straight, then fly back to Canberra for a 4 day weekend, then go out again. If I have been delayed anywhere, then the driving plan gets mucked up because I dont want to miss my flight and when I return I may have to take another day to drive back to the area that I should have completed, finish the job, then drive to the new area. Again, more time lost and fuel used. Two of the greatest, most hair tearing and frustrating things that can scuttle my driving plan are non existant roads and no through roads that are not marked as such. Now some of these non existant roads are not a real problem if they are in a small out back town with only a few hundred people in them and I can quickly alter the plan and work around it, and I have found places where the roads are obviously gazetted and therefore appear on the Garmin Nuvi, but the locals have fenced the streets off and run goats and chooks there. Squatting, in other words. But if a road does not exist but is marked on my maps or appears in the Garmin Nuvi, then I have to drive back over roads that I have already driven on which makes the job take longer and uses more fuel. There is a good example north of Penrith heading for Castlereigh. A road is gazetted and the farms either side have been cleared and fenced, but the road is virgin bush. Stuffed my plan right up. Another place where non existant roads turned my hair white is Katoomba. If you rely on the Garmin Nuvi it will take you over a cliff in several places. I looked up whereis.com and found where I could make complaints, but decided that it would be a near full time job correcting their errors. No through roads are another bane. I don't know if OSM has a function to tag no through roads, but if they dont, then could we have it please. NTR No Through Road. There are many instances of intersections that have been converted to T junctions and one no thru road. One suburb in Cairns in particular (Edge Hill), and Salisbury in Adelaide have lots. It's obviously been done as a road safety initiative and I will not critisize this decision. The printed company maps that I get generally can't show some no thru roads because the scale is too small to see that the intersection has been converted, and the Nuvi again has to have the scale set right down to see it, which takes my focus off to road. When I first started on OSM, I wanted to have altitude data in with the lat lon info, and was told bluntly that OSM is a street map, not a GIS. So, my bottom line is: Don't have non existant roads. Twenty plus years ago, I heard a comment that maps had deliberate errors in them so that the mapmakers could find if others were copying their work. This has nothing to do with copyright, it has everything to do with seeing roads blanks on OSM and non-blanks on other maps and wasting time trying to constantly re-map non-existent features time and time again. In this instance we are trying to determine if something is blank because it hasn't been surveyed or because it's truly blank. snip Two of the greatest, most hair tearing and frustrating things that can scuttle my driving plan are non existant roads and no through roads that are not marked as such. This is exactly what we're trying to address, showing others the difference between non-existent and non-mapped. snip, snip, snippity snip So, my bottom line is: Don't have non existant roads. OSM is a street map displaying roads that do exist! OSM is a lot more than what is only rendered, just because the data exists doesn't mean it should always be rendered or will be useful to everyone all the time, and this is one very good example of where OSM becomes very useful to a diverse group of people. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

I believe the intention of the discussion we are having here is that we want to mark non-existant roads in such a way that we won't accidently introduce them to OSM again if we get data from a source that may be outdated or intentionally misleading (just like those copying fearful mapmakers). It will of course be essential that these are not displayed in a misleading way (or not displayed at all) and are not suggested as possible routes. We do have a way of marking no through roads via the access=no tag so while whichever tag is chosen for nonexistent roads is being adopted worldwide, we can still ensure that there will not be any confusion. Re: [talk-au] How to tag a non-existent road
I agree with Graeme Wilson. OSM should not include non-existent roads. The only convincing argument I have seen put so far by the minority who want to show them is that it will save other mappers from wasted time. Given that mappers are the minority and people like Graeme in the majority I think it is there needs that should be given priority. Further, there is still the unresolved problem of what to tag these roads. Non-existent is unhelpful and ambiguous as many people have pointed out here. As far as I am concerned non-existent roads are in the same category as childrens' imaginary friends, important to the individual but not of much interest to anyone else. Let's face it. There is so much that really does exist left to be mapped we hardly need to put effort, particularly given the problems, into what does not. 2009/10/26 John Smith deltafoxtrot...@gmail.com 2009/10/25 Alex (Maxious) Sadleir maxi...@gmail.com: It will of course be essential that these are not displayed in a misleading way (or not displayed at all) and are not suggested as possible routes.
Also Spezialist.

Looking at my local map in Orleans Ontario noticed that Merkley Drive does not connect up to Charlemagne. Merkley Drive is tagged Geobase_import_2009 and all sorts of interesting things. Charlemagne is just tagged potlach and residential road. Is there an easy way to extend Merkley Drive so it does connect? ie add another node but copy the attributes of the existing road? Should I simply hold off until I know that the Geobase_import_2009 has been completed? Is there a way to submit a GPS trace into Geobase to get their base map corrected? Re: [Talk-ca] Correcting Geobase_import_2009
Hi, just use potlatch connect the roads. No harm done :-) The OSM changeset history keeps track of attribution and such. If you want a copy of where the geobase version of that road is, i can provide that. The system that imported the roads didnt want to interfeer with what work previous people did. Re: [Talk-ca] Correcting Geobase_import_2009
Yes I'm new and my background is red tape. I understand there is a lot going on and I appreciate the work that has been done. My background is in databases etc. If you ask clients what they want they always rate reliability above anything else. To me the data from geobase is good high quality data with input from multiple sources including municipal governments. Talk to them nicely and we can get all sorts of high quality things like bus stops, speed limits etc direct from the municipalities. What appears to have happened is where the data has been merged roads that are in the geobase database no longer connect to roads that have been put in via potlatch. I think the end point is dropped. The older potlatch roads do not have the same depth of tags as the geobase data. Not only that but roads that run close to the old roads appear to be deleted for the section close to the potlatch inputted roads. Oh and my WAAS enabled GPS thinks at least one Potlatch inputted road is in the wrong place. My personal view is that we should go with the geobase database and see if we can layer on tags etc. That way we can update the database from time to time by replacing the entire geobase data layer. I think OSM can add value in Canada basically by tagging and enhancing data already there, if a client can get geobase data elsewhere that actually has connecting roads and complete roads they may prefer that to OSM where the data quality isn't so consistent. Oh and I prefer JOSM to potlatch for some reason. Thoughts? Cheerio John 2009/10/25 Sam Vekemans acrosscanadatra...@gmail.com: Hi, just use potlatch connect the roads. Yes, in places where a road already existed in OSM the software we used to avoid duplicating the road with the geobase version sometimes results in missing the connecting segment or other segments of the geobase road close to an existing OSM road. If you see places like this it is best to just fix things up. Steve ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
