Peter Miller's colour scheme which should work for most of the UK (please tell me if you rather not have the colour scheme named after you) These colour schemes should work but they might need some fine tuning. Additional colour schemes can easily be added. If you are interested in writing one have a look at [1]. Christoph [1] http://mappa-mercia.org/novam/scripts/Novam/Schemes.js Thanks Christoph, I like my eponymous scheme - it does just what I need it to do. Luc / Speedy ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

OSM has no problem with that, and your delivery company probably hasn't either (remember, CC-BY-SA does not mean you have to put it up on a web site or something, just that anyone who legally gets hold of such a printout may do whatever he or she likes with it). Ok, this is also what I understood. But as far as I'm informed the OSM project will change it's licensing soon (ODbl) - will it then still be legal to use the OSM data the way we want to use it? yes. if the change to ODbL goes through it is likely that the OSM tiles will remain CC BY-SA, or possibly move to a less restrictive license. in either case, what you are proposing will still be legal - and i think we want it to always stay that way. cheers, matt ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

('You may use and copy the database as long as you distribute the result under CC-BY-SA, and grant this same database permission to the recipient.') ODbL does exactly this: it is a copyright and database rights license, in addition to being a contract. the contractual part is necessary because copyright + database rights almost certainly doesn't give enough protection in most of the non-EU world, e.g: USA. Clearly there is a tradeoff to be made between simplicity and covering every possible theoretical case where somebody in some jurisdiction might possibly be able to persuade a court that they can copy OSM's data. It seems that the ODBL optimizes for the latter. ODbL optimises for a trade-off of simplicity and completeness. it has been through several comment stages and, at each stage, people said it was too complex. however, when you dig into any particular clause you'll find that they are necessarily complex. i'm not saying it can't be shortened - just that most of the unnecessary complexity has already been removed. lawyers don't revel in complexity for complexity's sake - they deal with it because it's an unavoidable part of the legal system. even if you were to optimise for size over coverage, you'd still want it to work in at least the EU and USA. the EU needs the bits about database rights, the USA needs the bits about contract. throw in the bits about copyright in an attempt to cover that base as well; that's the ODbL! here is my rationale for moving away from CC BY-SA http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/License/Why_CC_BY-SA_is_Unsuitable Thanks. Those are indeed problems with the licence. But only the first one is a reason to *drop* CC-BY-SA; the remaining ones are just as easily addressed by dual-licensing under both Creative Commons and some other, more permissive (and acceptable-to-some-lawyers) licence. Hi, (me) Assuming for a moment that my contributions to OSM are copyrightable and the CC-BY-SA license is valid, then if I license my data CC-BY-SA I have the right to request anyone using my data, or building or using derived versions thereof, to provide attribution in the form I believe is required, and I can drag them to court if they don't. (Ævar) No you don't. You've just given them permission to use your works under a license which dictates that distributors must attribute you within the limited scope demanded of them by the license. As long as they're otherwise in compliance you have no right to demand additional attribution not required by the license. (Martin) could you point me to the limitation part of the attribution in cc-by-sa? AFAIK you have to attribute all contributors. Multiple misunderstandings here. What I wanted to say, initially, was that the contributor decides which form of attribution he finds appropriate. Ævar interpreted this as the contributor can demand any kind of attribution and said that I was wrong. Ævar is right in saying that the license does not allow the contributor to demand ANY kind of attribution. In fact it says: You must keep intact all copyright notices for the Work and give the Original Author credit reasonable to the medium or means You are utilizing by conveying the name (or pseudonym if applicable) of the Original Author if supplied; the title of the Work if supplied; to the extent reasonably practicable, the Uniform Resource Identifier, if any, that Licensor specifies to be associated with the Work, unless such URI does not refer to the copyright notice or licensing information for the Work... So the author may only request that his name/pseudonym, the title of the work, and an URL that he specifies are used as credits. (Still this is vastly more than supported by OSM.) There is of course the soft factor of reasonable to the medium or means, and it is always the licensor who has to find it reasonable. If you make a TV production and only list the licensor's name in the credits at the end, and the licensor then says that it would have been perfectly reasonable to show his name in the picture while his work was shown, then he *can* drag you to court over this - and whether he will win is anyone's guess. Now you again misunderstood Ævar to say that a collective attribution is allowed. Ævar never said that. There is an opt-out clause for attribution, where CC-BY-SA says: If You create a Derivative Work, upon notice from any Licensor You must, to the extent practicable, remove from the Derivative Work any reference to such Licensor or the Original Author, as requested. So the licensors have the right to request that you remove the attribution; but it would be a far stretch to claim that by taking part in OSM licensors automatically do so. Some questions: - Do you think it is better to use a namespaced tag (mineshaft:type) or a normal tag (mineshaft_type)? In the current proposal the first one is used. But looking at other features i think that in this case a normal tag would be better. It's also bunker_type for example: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:military%3Dbunker. - In the forum somebody has suggested to add a tag for the name of the mine the mineshaft belongs to. Hi, Dave F. wrote: I was under the impression that anybody with the relevant skills would be able to contribute not just two Maybe we should have a second cyclemap the styles of which are not determined by just two people but by a democratically elected committee of Wikifid^H^H^H contributors! Remember that it's done by people in their spare time, using resources they've begged, borrowed and stolen for themselves. If you think you have a need for a similar, but different map you're free to make one. So we'd have a proliferation of cycle maps. That would be a waste of time effort. OpenStreetMap is, first and foremost, not a project to produce maps - but to produce a database from which maps can be made (and in another post you write that you're doing your fair share of collecting that data which shows you're as much part of it as anyone else). I think that we should encourage diversity. Let the makers of opencyclemap.org make *their* cycle map, and let someone else steal their ideas, avoid their mistakes, and make a better (or different) cycle map, and so on. There's nothing like a bit of friendly competition to get people to revisit and improve their work. We should try to lower the entry barrier for people creating their own maps, and of course once a map is reasonably stable it must be given equal prominence to OpenCycleMap and all others on our web site. At the moment there is only one cycle map but this is not the official cycle map - if someone else made a different one, it would deserve the same treatment. Whenever I go shopping I think what a waste of time and effort it is to have three different supermarkets close by, each of which offering me almost everything I need. But at the end of the day I'm happy to have a choice. 2009/10/27 Shaun McDonald sh...@shaunmcdonald.me.uk I'm aware of the mapnik-stylesheet, but the question was for the cyclemap-stylesheet. The cycle map and nonames stylesheets are not publicly available. so maybe free cyclemap would be a better name than open? Not that I have any problem with the stylesheet not beeing released, but I find it somehow strange to promote it on the main project website/map, as open in Openstreetmap has a different meaning than free in free beer, as we like to say to everyone interested. The other two styles are publicly available and can be modified and improved by everyone. IMHO that should be the condition for being on the main map. cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

how do you define main area? Aren't the shafts vertical access / ventilation shafts that lead to the inner mine? IMHO that defines them as part of the mine (and indicates that they should be comprised). The main area is the area where all the bigger buildings of the mine are. An airshaft could be a single node outside of this area and that's why a polygon can not express that the mineshaft is part of the mine. But perhaps you meant something different with polygon. or the company provides you the information, or you work there. That's anyway not a problem to discuss: either you have the info and put it or you don't and will most likely not put it. You almost always know the name of the mine. A problem might arise if the mineshaft has a name itself and/or if there is more than one mineshaft. In these cases I'd still opt for the relation. All mineshafts i know have their own name. That's why you cannot use the name-tag for the name of the mine. What I do find a lot of, particularly in very old, small towns is that the basic layout is straight streets and right angle intersections, and many of these towns physically dont have the outer most streets, ie never existed, or are barely visible wheel tracks. (or fenced off by locals and running goats and chooks etc) but they exist on the Garmin Nuvi - whereis.com thingie and this is what I want OSM to avoid. The level of map I need is just a mud map with only what really exists. Going back a bit, could gazetted roads that dont exist or are yet to be made be coloured/thickness altered/dashed or signified differently if they are going to be displayed. Going back a bit, could gazetted roads that dont exist or are yet to be made be coloured/thickness altered/dashed or signified differently if they are going to be displayed. I don't think anyone wants these to render on a regular map, but several of us want them to be in the OSM database so then it comes back to filing bugs against editors to have them shown in a particular way, but that's a different issue.
Vandalen) könnte man deren Edits ausblenden.
