Re: [OSM-Talk-ZA] How to display paths on all layers?

2021-05-31 Thread Glen Wilson
Assuming this is not a caching problem as described in an earlier thread,
it's possible the other paths in your comparison have different tags that
those the layer will choose to include. Tags affecting paths could be
things like sac_scale=* or trail_visibility=*, or a layer could decide to
render highway=path but not highway=footway (general purpose paths vs
footpaths perhaps found in more urban areas).

The general rule is to map what's on the ground, don't tag something just
to get it to show on the map. Have a look at the tags used in the other
paths. If (and only if) they apply to your paths then happily go apply them
to yours, and wait for the caching to do it's thing.

I found the wiki a very useful source of what tags to use.

Note: each layer will only render the things chosen by its developers. That
explains why didn't layers

[OSM-Talk-ZA] Tagging ground signs

2013-05-19 Thread Glen Wilson

Hi everybody

It seems a not uncommon practice to for place names to be markedin huge
writing (on a hillside). They're very visible and have, I feel, some
cartographic value.

Below is the start of a new tagging proposal. I thought I'd throw it
open to the list first before going to all the effort of putting
something useless on the OSM Wiki
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features. This is just a
startand I'll probably add more detail and examples as time allows. I
haven't done much tagging of these objects because I've only just
figured out what to tag them with.

*Tagging*
I propose placing a way over the name from left to right (of the word,
so if it's upside down in you editor...) then tagging it with
tourism=ground_sign name=*. That would probably be sufficient for the
River
http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-34.1142101lon=21.2524555sdale
http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-34.1142101lon=21.2524555
example. For the Oord / Resort
http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-30.5875051lon=25.5080875
example, the way would simply contain multiple nodes to make it go around
the corner.

Often these the signs are pictures, or written in a weird font that a
renderer like Mapnik can't do justice to. For these I propose tracing
what you see on the ground and simply leaving the name=* tag blank. You
can still include the name by putting the letters you draw into a
relation and tagging that with name=* (all the better to be able to
search for it). The markings near Wakkerstroom
http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-27.3728169lon=30.1580294
might require this method.

Filled shapes can be created by using closed ways and multipolygon
relations. I haven't come across such examples, but I'm sure they're
out there.

*Supplementary tags*

 * width=* to specify how wide a line should be drawn
 * color=* (or colour=?) to specify what you think it specifies
 * surface=* or something similar to say what it's made of.

*Examples*

 * Riversdale near guess where:

http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-34.1142101lon=21.2524555
 * Oord/Resort marking near Gariep Dam:

http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-30.5875051lon=25.5080875
 * Voortrekker markings near Wakkerstroom:

http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=18layers=B0lat=-27.3728169lon=30.1580294

I'm curious if these appear anywhere else in the world, or if it's just
a local thing. There are other considerations too, like are
/ground_sign/ and /tourism/ the best tag names to use(think about
highway=road and highway=unclassified for an OSM newbie)

What'd'ya think about that?

Re: [OSM-Talk-ZA] Which base imagery to use

2013-05-16 Thread Glen Wilson
I'm also leaning towards the cd:ngi imagery because of more generally
consistant alignment. Whatever your preference, it's still a good idea to
check the alignment with (good quality) GPS traces (if available).

I have found having multiple sources available is useful for comparison
(e.g. that lake runs empty during the dry season, that road construction is
complete, or that amusement park used to be an airfield). Even though the
imagery date isn't available.you can often find clues as to which source
suits your purpose better.

Re: [OSM-Talk-ZA] Lepelle, Motlatse, etc.

2013-03-24 Thread Glen Wilson
Before going too far into this, take a look at the name key
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Name on the OSM wiki. Also take a
look at the on-the-ground rule
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Disputes#On_the_Ground_Rule. OSM
records what is - there's little scope for what was and will be.

Basically name=* is what displays on most of the renderers etc. If most
(local) people and (more importantly) road signs know it as the Blyde
River then that's what should be set in the name=* tag. In such a case
official_name=Motlatse River is useful.

alt_name=* would probably apply if it were also called Blyde Canyon River.

Of course if the local government's got lots of money for sign changes
(and the people want out with the old) then go ahead and use
name=Motlatse River; old_name=Blyde River.

Language variations (name:xx=*) might be useful in cases where the
official name is really just the same thing in a different language
(which seems to be the case for Levuvhu vs Levubu, but I'm no language
expert). In these cases it's still a good idea to use
name/official_name/old_name etc.

This naming stuff also applies to names of other things like places,
parks, and streets.

Include the suffix (River/Stream/Spruit etc) in the name if known.
It's quite possible to have Blyde River tagged as waterway=stream
(waterway=* is a physical/functional tag and would be relevant even if
it was called Motlatse Street).

go as far as having the old province borders imported as historical

[OSM-Talk-ZA] Tagging agricultural holdings/plots

2011-12-14 Thread Glen Wilson

Hi

I'm a little stuck on how to tag the place agricultural
holdings/plots. landuse=residential is too urban, landuse=farmland is
too rural, and the validator shouts at me if I use landuse=User
Defined. Tagwatch
http://tagwatch.stoecker.eu/South_africa_and_lesotho/En/tags.html
didn't shed any light either.

What's a plot?
It's a piece of privately owned land, usually 1-3ha in size. It's used
for residential *and* (recreational) agricultural use. Because of the
size of the properties, houses are sparsely spaced.

Some examples can be found at -26.093, 28.3458
http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=-26.093lon=28.3458zoom=15.

The best I can come up with is landuse=agricultural_holdings, but I'm
not sure if this will make sense in an international context (and surely
they have such things in other parts of the world). Use would be
similar to landuse=residential.

Re: [OSM-Talk-ZA] Capturing shopping centres

2011-08-24 Thread Glen Wilson
This seems like an interesting idea, although I think some parts are too
specific:

Why can't I use building=yes AND
shop=shopping_centre/shop=mall/shop=convenience/shop=* along with other tags
necessary for the building itself? Also some shopping complexes have
auxillary buildings which are part of the site but aren't shops (guard huts,
offices, generators etc).

On the relation side, I also think site=mall is too specific: a mall
(covered area with multiple shops including multiple big stores like
Game/Woolworths/Pick 'n Pay etc) is different to a shopping centre
(non-covered area, usually with only one major grocery store and multiple
smaller shops), which in turn is different from small (and generally)
stand-alone shops. A type=site relation works for all of them, but sizes
and purposes (and therefore customers) differ.

surface=* is usually used for the type of surface covering a feature (e.g.
surface=grass for a soccer pitch, or surface=asphalt for a parking area).
It might be a better idea to choose something else for the GLA (what about
surface_area or lettable_surface_area).

Good luck with your modelly shop mall thingy project. Say hi to Agent Smith
for me.

   - parking=surface (or multilevel, or covered, etc)

3. Next, add the internal service roads with tag
   - highway=service

   - service=parking_aisle

4. Add everything together by creating a relation with the following tags:
   - type=site
   - site=mall

[OSM-Talk-ZA] Fw: PlanetGIS announcement: Free routable GIS street map of SA?

2008-10-29 Thread Glen Wilson
Somebody's taken notice -- Glen
- Original Message -
From: Paul van Helden
To:

Subject: PlanetGIS announcement: Free routable GIS street map of SA?

Hi Glen,

Are you familiar with the OpenStreetMap project? OpenStreetMap is a project
aimed at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to
anyone who wants them. Contributors to OpenStreetMap take GPS devices with them
on journeys, or go out specially to record GPS tracks. They record street
names, place names and other features using notebooks, digital cameras, and
voice-recorders. Back at the computer, contributors upload those GPS logs
showing where they travelled, and trace-out the roads on OpenStreetMap's
collaborative database. Using their notes, contributors add the street names,
information such as the type of road or path, and the connections between
roads. That data is then processed to produce detailed street-level maps, which
can be published freely on sites such as Wikipedia, used to create handheld or
in-car navigation devices, or printed and copied without restriction.

I've known about this project for some time, but after watching its coverage
grow exponentially (click to see animation) for a while now, I eventually got
very excited about it. This project has become the Wikipedia of street maps and
has a real potential to surpass the accuracy and completeness of expensive
commercial street maps in the near future... sustainably. With this data you
can do whatever you like as long as you acknowledge the source, and you don't
ever have to pay for updates. The more people that get involved, the more
updates you'll see, and it's all free. It is very easy to add streets, change
streets (or any other type of feature) and change or add attributes like names.
Anyone can do it!

You can download this open and free street map of South Africa, as a PlanetGIS
map, now from our website. Because this is such a living map, I will post an
update on our website once per month. Your changes to the map will be included!
View it or download it here: www.planetgis.co.za/browsemap.php?id=15. You can
see how quickly the map is growing on this page:
www.planetgis.co.za/sa-osm-progress.php.

A lot of changes have been made to Planet over the past month and a half. You
have to get the latest version (3.0.5) to see this street map properly. Changes
include such things as multiple labels for features, boxed labels, prioritized
styles, and much much more. If you use 3.0.4 or earlier to view this street
map, it won't look anything like it should.

Other news is that the searchable cadastral map for KwaZulu Natal is now ready
for download.

Let me know if you would like to contribute to OSM, the Free Wiki World Map.

Best regards,

Paul van Helden
Planet GIS.
