Re: [Talk-ca] CanTopo!

2010-06-23 Thread Sam Vekemans
Hi,
I'm cc'ing your notice to talk-ca.

So the CanMatrix TIFFs, although georeferenced, they are older.
However, they can still be used with Merkaarator.

For those of you who have been under a rock about Merkaarator, (like
me) the editing tool is very good.
It allows nice viewing of WMS layers, which seems to be better than JOSM.

Whats surprising, is that the area which is the Capital Region
District boundary, as well as the backroads are actually available.

This significant for ALL of Canada, because it means that there is no
need to approach the cities about data, until these CanTopo &
CanMatrix PDFs and TIFFs have been fully exhausted.

So on top of the CanVec data, that were all looking forward to seeing,
we can further detail the OSM map with this stuff.

Note: City Boundary data could very well be available as SHP files. If
anyone finds it, please do share :-), then we can create a rules.txt
and make the .osm files available.

Cheers,
Sam

Hi Sam,

In shapefile format, the natural choice is Statistics Canada Census
Subdivision boundaries (the most recent is for 2010). Census
subdivisions are typically municipalities or equivalents. Here is the
link:
http://geodepot.statcan.gc.ca/2006/040120011618150421032019/031904_05-eng.jsp

The data is under a similar (the same?) unlimited use license as the NRN.

Cool, that just added another todo list item :)

And so, the GeoTIFFs, albiet dated, can be used as a handy backdrop background.

Sorting the data by physical geographical area, seems to be what the
cool people does these days.
NTS grid is prefered.

So out of curiosity, does Markaator allow direct opening of the TIFF
files? JOSM doesn't seem to allow this.
What procedure would be involved in aligning these TIFFs to reality?

Would the CanVec data not include all of this data? Or is it a completely
separate data set?

I took at look at the TIFF for Portage La Prairie in MB (near me):
ftp://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/cantopo/50k_tif/062/g/cantopo_062g16_tif.zip
I did notice the city boundaries in there. Hmm, that's always good to
see... :) The data is out there, we just need to find it.

Re: [Talk-ca] CanTopo!

2010-06-23 Thread Russell P
Merkaartor has support for GeoTiffs (already rectified), and CanVec
definitely doesn't include all the data, although it has most of it.
CanMatrix seems to have the most park boundaries in it although some
are out of date. Basically if you are trying to get an area to a high
level of detail:
1. geobase import
2. Canvec import
3. NHN import in BC (included in canvec soon)
4. Cantopo/Canmatrix tracing
5. Yahoo tracing
5. Ground work

Of course you should try to verify all this data because I find a lot
of the NrCan data to be still a bit inaccurate.

Hmm, I just looked at this data in OpenJump and it looks like Winnipeg's
boundary is Winnipeg..
I think perhaps I'll give a shot at converting this to OSM format and see
what things look like.

I've worked with these layers a fair amount. Some things will throw you
off, such as First Nations reserves in and around urban areas, and
special districts (such as the UBC Pt. Grey campus and the University
Endowment lands which aren't technically in Vancouver, but in Electorial
District A, and the Census Subdivision boundaries place them in
Electorial District A along with the unpopulated water shed area above
North and West Van).

2010-06-23 Thread Sam Vekemans
JOSM is currently allergic to GeoTIFFs.
The only direct way around it is to use the PicLayer plugin and take a
screanshot view of an area and manually move it around.

An option is to use mapwarper to make a wms of it, that requires
making control points. So i dont know what is faster.

Russell knows the better method.

Jump on the #osm-ca IRC and bug me about the shp files for admin boundaries.
Lots of things going on, so todo items tend to get pushed to the side.

Cheers,
Sam

My aim is to import more aboriginal lands before working on this
stuff, so its a little easier to see.
And we also need to be careful to not merge nodes with residential
area or anything else.

Actually,
I just removed the sample area. that I made from the stats Can shp
files. As the license that listed in the PDF is for 'personal use
only', And the rest of that licence is not written in english eithor
lol :).
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1002082

Instead, as the alternate, we CAN trace from the pdf maps (cantopo &
canmatrix), to get these boundaries. Which might not be the most
current, but IS the most current that is 'freely available'. So
thats also good.

Fortunately, for the Province of Ontario, there is this data available
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Land_Information_Ontario#Administrative

[Talk-ca] CanTopo Product Review

2010-06-28 Thread Sam Vekemans
Hi all,

Last week i got re-aquanted with the CanMatrix & CanTopo PDF maps,
that are available for us to trace from.

Note: Once all of the CanVec data has been imported (manually
copying) we ask, whats next?

The CanTopo PDF maps are basically the newer version of CanMatrix.
Where there are GeoTIFFs created for the areas of most demand.
The CanMatrix pdfs were basically the scanned verson of the origional
paper maps.
Where CanTopo are the latest & Greatest.
Plus printed on a pritty map :)

The catelogue is familar to the CanVec set, but a few changes to note.

- the 'residential area' that we see in CanVec is now extrapolated
based on the GeoBase NRN, as it lists the road density. The more
concentration of little roads the bigger the grey area is.
So basically, we can use CanTopo to check the residential area and
make it bigger, based on this newer data.

For 'wooded_area' it now is from the Canadian Forestry Service
satelite imagery, were previously vineyards & Orchards were included.

-the map 'legend' is actually on the map, so you can basically look at
the map to understand what the symbols & Numbers are.

There is the map # (NTS tile) directly on the map, so it helps.
The map legend also has groovey pictographs of the symbols which make
it easier to understand.

The 'Tundra Ponds' and 'Palsa bog' and 'esker' are all listed, so
after some time using the maps, you'll recognize it.

Ideally, we want to have this entire mapset available on a single WMS layer.
Fortunatly, we have some awesome volunteers to make this happen. :)

James Dupont has offered to host samples of it, but since our volume
is big, we need a designated host.
James showed me the technical details (basically changing text & file names)

thats all for now,
Sam
