[Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
Dear talk-ca, There is a new secret demo of routing on OSM data for Canada. The demo server could go away without notice, and it doesn't update data regularly, but it seems to be blindingly fast. Also, it only works for part of Europe. Except it secretly works for part of Canada too! So far, I'm using this to test routing connectivity for the Trans Canada, and for major roads in my area. So far, i see that there is a continuity problem in Eastern Nova Scotia and I hear that there is a problem near the Manitoba / Ontario border. In both cases if you try a route, it looks funny or fails to route. Looking funny is often either a route that goes the long way 'round, or goes backwards, then forward, or past the destination then back. The fix is to go find the overlapping nodes that aren't connected, or the missing bridge or backwards oneway tag, and fix them. Great fun! It should help find import issues where we haven't properly stitched imports to existing data. Again, this router isn't yet updating often, so maybe we can put things we find and fix in this thread, so we don't chase our tails? Then maybe ask for an update after the weekend? What do you think? Feel like doing some secret routing repair? ;-) And thanks to Frederik at Geofabrik, for adding Canada to this demo. This is pretty cool. Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
The subject of people having problems routing because connections weren't made has been brought up before. Tried http://keepright.ipax.at ? I have, it got really depressing the number of roads and footpaths that just weren't connected. CANVEC at least is connected to other CANVEC roads so my personal view is if you want routing either accept a road system based on CANVEC or wait for CommonMap. Yes... I believe you have that correct now. No barrier as I remember. Thanks. The interchange at Highway 93 (Icefields Parkway) and the TransCanada was not routing correctly coming south off the Parkway. I made some minor edits there and hopefully that will fix it, but the Bing coverage is poor. Also, there has been a lot of construction through there as they twin the highway. Hwy 99, Sea-to-Sky section (North of Vancouver), just north of Sunset Bay, there's a short section, where it's a single carriageway, but motorway implies oneway. Since Sea-to-Sky has been upgraded (Olympics), it's now dual carriage. This site is great for finding route errors. OSM will really improve thanks to this. Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
In Vancouver, from Hwy 1 heading west onto Brunette Ave heading southwest, the routing software advises to take the offramp going north onto Brunette, then do a u-turn at the Brunette/Bernatchey intersection in order to head south on Brunette. However, if one were to continue along Hwy 1, there is a proper offramp to go south on Brunette. Judging by the map, it looks like the u-turn method is actually shorter in terms of distance, so this is what the routing software chooses to do! (plus the Brunette/Bernatchey intersection is an H style [Brunette being the dual-way], so the software doesn't see it as a u-turn). A no_u_turn relation would fix this issue, but I'm not sure if u-turns are actually restricted there. Also, the routing software attempts to use ferries if it needs to, but doesn't seem to be using the Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) <-> Departure Bay (Nanaimo) route even though it all seems okay in data. Adam P.S. pnorman is my hero for the following tag: note=Yes, this track does overlap a road It's nice when people explain their odd ways of mapping (a rail and a road overlapping ways in this case). Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
I think I have a note somewhere that says "This is confusing in OSM. It's worse on the ground". I try to include those when I map something that seems completely illogical, but is an accurate representation of reality. I fixed the Brunette/Bernatchey intersection - my imagery indicates that you can't get to that from the service lane, so you can't go from the middle of the H to westbound brunette and there's not enough room to do a u-turn. I also fixed up my UBC commute - unfortunately, the secondary/tertiary/primary designations don't mean as much in the city for travel time as the router thinks. It gets the work commute exactly right, in both directions. > -Original Message- > From: Adam Dunn [mailto:dunna...@gmail.com] > Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2011 10:03 PM > To: talk-ca > Subject: Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo. > > In Vancouver, from Hwy 1 heading west onto Brunette Ave heading > southwest, the routing software advises to take the offramp going north > onto Brunette, then do a u-turn at the Brunette/Bernatchey intersection > in order to head south on Brunette. I've tested a bunch of routing in & around vancouver island (and victoria). It looks pretty good. A few minor fixes to some of the highway interchanges around Victoria (mostly turn restrictions -- turning left out of a merge lane across the highway would be bad for your health) I fixed one issue with the TCH near Medicine Hat, and then found others. It's bedtime, though, so someone else gets to find & fix. > Thank you, Frederik! Indeed! -Austin ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
More fixes near Sydney, NS. This _will_ be routable. ;-) There are large sections of hwy 125 that are drawn as single carriageway and highway=motorway. This implies oneway=yes, so we can go to Sydney but never return. Nice place, I'm sure. It does appear to have grade separated interchanges. The "really right thing to do" is to survey it and determine if either: - there is a central barrier, and draw as dual carriageway - no barrier, and redefine as trunk I'm not there, so in the interest of doing the least damage, I'm going with a single carriageway, highway=motorway, oneway=no. There are lots of other little fixups here; correct direction of _link, add _links in places, grade separate and add layers for bridges (hello, PotM!) Now moving to Sydney Mines on 125. Fixed 125 and Seaview Drive interchange. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
