We could probably quite easily generate a comparison between OSM and OS
streetnames, matching similarly named streets within the same vicinity in both
datasets. This could pick up quite a few useful things like disagreements
between spelling.

[Talk-GB] OS Locator - using in JOSM

2010-04-21 Thread David Dixon
I've been playing with the OS OpenData Locator dataset, which contains
the XY coordinates for the ends & midpoint of many of the UK's roads.
This gazetteer appears to complement the StreetView data - some (short)
streets whose names are absent from StreetView are included in OS
Locator. Conversely, some streets named in StreetView are absent from OS
Locator.

I've come up with a relatively painless way of getting the midpoint data
into an overlay in JOSM - see the wiki for details:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ordnance_Survey_Opendata#OS_Locator

If anyone can't get this working, I might be persuaded to format a
county or two - do get in touch. I can't guarantee a quick turnaround
though!

Re: [Talk-GB] Workington Bridges

2010-04-21 Thread Gregory
This is kind of the idea I had, but I don't think anyone really has the
ability to be on task force. Often my only barrier would be travel(public
transport) and accommodation costs. For others there are work and family
commitments.

I think I might do some Workington OS tracing around the bridges/river yet
clearly leave most of the town untouched. I have a friend who lives locally
that I want to brag about the bridges too and it might get her interested.
I'll document anything I do on the Cumbria wiki page:

I have a web page that contains all OSM route and boundary relations
in a browsable, sortable, map enabled viewer. It can also tell you
about some of their interesting tags, their length, their shape
(closed loop or not) and the number of nodes and ways they contain.

http://www.gedanken.org.uk/mapping/osm-boundaries/
http://www.gedanken.org.uk/mapping/osm-routes/

I also have similar pages for certain types of nodes (amenity, shop,
tourism, historic) which are linked from the above.

The data is extracted from OSM twice a week and covers the UK.

This may be tantamount to hijacking a perfectly good forum post, and
for that I apologise, but how's this for an idea:

Form a mapping taskforce -- a group of dedicated seasoned mapping
party attendants. When an area is put forward for requiring imediate
attention (workington being a suitable example) the area is imediatly
updated to the best level of information avilaable from any available
source, then the task force arainges a mapping party in the area a
short period (months or weeks) later to perfect it, spreading into
neighboring areas where time allows.

Locals would be pulled in to the effort through local media advertising.

It's an interesting point about OS. There's a mapping party in Andover
(Hants) in a few weeks and my own feeling is that it would be more "fun"
to do on the ground surveying at a pre-arranged party rather than just
copying from OS Street View. I suppose for pure "getting the mapping done"
one should use OS but my own preference is just to use it to check whether
GPS trace artefacts were artefacts(e.g. a kink in a street I surveyed at
Haslemere last week) and to check for blank streets - particularly as one
cannot guarantee the accuracy of the OS data anyway.

We had a discussion about this point during the Kidderminster mapping party
on Saturday. Our decision (relating to the Black Country in our case) was
that we would use OS OpenData StreetView, especially in partly mapped areas,
but we would record some info on the wiki for each area covered so that we
know which locations (slices of the cake) need still to have a ground
survey. It also permits a local mapper to bag a spot for ground surveying if
they would prefer to work with a blank canvas. I'd encourage mappers who are
tempted to map "off-piste" to document what they are doing on an appropriate
wiki page for the area in question. That at least informs others that come
along later.

As for Workington, I'm up in the area in a couple of weeks and if I have
time I'll drop by and do a check of the bridges if someone hasn't got there
before me.

The bridges look good, but the town is clearly lacking.
Now we have OS Street View, we could quickly respond to natural disasters by
improving the mappedness of the area.

Of course the argument still remains that it can mean the area never gets
well mapped. But think, if people see their local bridges in a news story
about the fastest responding map, and then just out of town their street is
missing or they go for walks in the Cumbria countryside, they could be
encouraged to get adding to the amazing OSM.
Even better would be if 1-2 months later a mapping party, or just a
talk/workshop was held locally, but I don't know that anyone is around or
able to travel there to do so.
