Yes, I am making the point that the wiki policy is not observed in Wales. If you do some simple replacements (s/London Road/Ffordd Caergybi/, s/Ffordd Lundain/Holyhead Road/, s/name:en/name:cy/) then this adequately summarises how roads in North Wales are tagged. Certainly in Bangor, the roads I have surveyed have the welsh name above the english name on street name plates (presumably policy for Gywnnedd). And although English is extremely widely spoken it is not the first language for the majority of people in the area. In Welsh speaking areas it is my experience that schoolchildren take until their mid-teens to feel confident in English. Personally I favour a name=Welsh Name / English Name, name:cy=Welsh Name, name:en=English Name approach, as used for instance in Brussels on OSM and officially in Biel / Bienne in Switzerland (one of the few places there which is truly bilingual). One place in Switzerland where there is some commonality with the situation in Wales is the Grisons, where Romansh is the language of the natives, but a lot of signage is often in German. Like Wales there are many incomers living the Grisons which tends to distort the actual cultural relationship of the languages spoken in the area: monoglot English speakers are often retirees or people running life-style businesses whose children left home before they moved to Wales. Similarly people with Welsh as first-language often have to use English for economic and (broader) cultural reasons, which also tends to downplay the languages significance in daily life. [Talk-GB] Surveying Private Roads
I would like to survey the house numbers for some private roads in Southampton, currently I have avoided the area as I am uncertain about the access restrictions. Does anyone have any generally applicable advice about this situation? Having done a fair bit of mapping around Criccieth and various walks around Snowdonia, I'd support this idea. I presume the order of the names in the main "name" tag would be the reverse if that was the order on the street sign? I presume, also, that we would add in simple translations even if they aren't shown on a road sign? I'm just thinking of very common straightforward cases like 'Stryd Fawr / High Street', and names that are known locally by an English name even if not signposted. I wouldn't want to start making up translations otherwise, no matter how obvious it might seem. There is a 'Ffordd y Castell' in Criccieth that translates to 'Castle Terrace' rather than the more obvious 'Castle Road'. Sometimes different sections of a road have the different languages, but I don't see that we need to reflect that where we know the name is a direct translation. It gets a bit more complicated where names aren't obviously direct translations. Are they the same name, or alternative names? Should we worry? I have come across streets signposted in Welsh, with a very different English name evident in the OS open data. In these instances I've tended to stick to names I can see on the ground.
