Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Elmley/Hockley Brook

2023-04-05 Thread Andy Robinson
H Alex,

Welcome to OSM.

You could start with https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide
as well as other great information contained on the OSM wiki.

The main thing to remember is that unlike Google, OSM cannot accept any data
from copyrighted sources or data that sits under a licence that is not
compatible with OSM. Our main mapping sources are the imagery layers
available through the various OSM editing software and personal knowledge or
survey.

Happy mapping

Cheers

Andy (blackadder)

Hi

I am a experienced Google Mapper with two million views of my edits of our
local Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals. However I now need to concentrate
on making changes to OSM.

Is their any guides to starting out in OSM or local workshops to assist
those starting out?

Thank you in advance for any advice given

Hi,

It is about the place where the Hockley Brook takes the name of Elmley
Brook.

On osm I have created this relation :

on my screen, I hope it will work for you).

So I was thinking the node of the changing name was at the confluence with
this stream :

Can someone confirm that ?

And do you know the name of this stream r15652436 (perhaps Elmley Brook ?)

I'm trying to determine the western extent and source of Langley Brook,
which runs eastwards to join the Tame at RSPB Middleton Lakes.

I have created this relation:

and it seems this unnamed way:

and those linking the two might be the same, but there are intermediate
pools. Can anyone advise, please?

Ray,

Back in 2009/10 OSMers, myself included, added route details for Birmingham’s
gritting from information supplied by BCC and created routes in OSM. We also
made the BBC news with our then gritting map as the council didn’t have their
own.

https://www.mappa-mercia.org/2010/02/true-grit.html

Its very likely that Birmingham’s current gritting routes and bin locations are
historically similar to those we worked with all those years ago. Ideally we
would get an update from them so that we can verify/fix the OSM data.

We know from past experience that location data for objects within BCC’s data
sets can be off, especially if it was collected by third parties. Therefore
their locations of bins is a useful aid for locating them on the ground but
unwise to consider an import per se even if the licence on the data turns out
to be acceptable to OSM.

Cheers

To my surprise there is nothing on the wiki about how to do so, and I
can find no JSOM preset.

What do folk suggest?

I would like to add the inscription, for each of the three fingers,
with their comaps points, something like:

   inscription:NW=foo

or, using degrees:

   inscription:315:=foo

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] HS2 phase 1 updates - Solihull interchange station

2019-12-18 Thread Andy Robinson
Brian,

Still a bit early to mobilise the troops for general HS2 related mapping.
Clearance, demolition, utility diversions and compound establishment is still
the focus along with infrastructure that facilitates HS2 like the work near the
NEC. The main construction should get underway next year but it could be 2021
in some areas. The first signs will be when fencing contractors start to fence
off either side of the land take for the main linear construction works.

There is a wiki page at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/High_Speed_2 but
it’s probably time to create a new page specifically for the Phase 1
construction so I’ve added an empty stub link at the top of the High Speed 2
page if anyone fancies dropping in any text/info. Folks who are keeping an eye
on their patch can if they like add their name and any notes to the
construction page to save duplication of mapping effort and improve
communication.

As for site entrances & references etc, useful to have them in OSM but note
some may change as the project moves from enabling works to full HS2
construction. Not all compounds are the responsibility of the main HS2
contractors.

Cheers

Andy

Thanks for the update Andy: drove past there on Sunday and things have moved on
considerably. I've updated appropriately. Do you think it's necessary to have
the compounds identified by name and entrance? They're going to be around for a
couple of years and folk will need to get to them. I've also updated some
demolition areas in Birmingham. I'm on the updates list for HS2 for Warwicks
and Birmingham now. Do you think it would be a good idea for OSMers to adopt a
stretch of the HS2 route and keep an eye on it - possible set HS2 up as a UK
OSM national project with its own wiki page ( you might already have done
this). Thanks for all your sterling efforts in getting the data in.

Regards and Merry Xmas

As a follow-up, it would be great to update the Dudley No.2 canal work
across the Sainsbury site. They haven't raised all the money to complete but
the developers have done a load already and this way needs updating to
reflect progress: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/573536067

If anyone is in Selly Oak can they update the new Sainsbury development &
surrounds etc. Brian, I see you were there doing just that three weeks ago.
The new store opened last week (my daughter says she got "lost" in there on
Saturday :-) ). I assume the old store is now shut? And is the fuel station
open too? The new store is "experimental" and incorporates a food court,
Oasis concession, and fully integrated Habitat and Argos. I see the Argos

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Chad Brook at Edgabton

2017-12-08 Thread Andy Robinson
Andy,

As a possible future aid I added some pre M6 alignment for the Holbrook
drainage area using the 1947 OOC OS 1:25k. The ways only have a note tag on
them of "Drainage courses associated with Holbrook from circa 1947 OS 1:25k
mapping". Even in 1947 the thin blue lines are not continuous and was not even
present on the mapping from just north of the now Perry Beeches campus right
down to the Perry reservoir by the canal. The Holbrook name doesn’t even appear
anywhere on the map so perhaps it’s a modern name. It's also possible that
there was little more than a drainage route back before the landscape was
concreted. The Thornbridge Avenue area was already built out by 1947 of course.
A tall order to find the culverted route. Old construction plans for the M6
would probably show it.

Cheers
Andy

Also I've screwed up my calendar so Thursday 5th October isn't looking that
great for me :-( I might have to skip it but throwing the idea of a one off
Wednesday meeting out there if that works for others. If not the go ahead
without me on Thursday.

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Sept Meeting

2017-09-05 Thread Andy Robinson
Those that know it’s now September would not have been put off by my
suggestion that we were meeting last week! Anyway, I had a brain fart and did a
little mapping over there anyway before realising my error! I mapped some of
the town centre and the roads on the new housing estate on the south of the
town.

Having been there we need to change pub as the Star probably won’t have food
on. So instead the suggestion would be the Littleton Arms on the Clay Street

http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/306301414

http://www.thelittletonarms.com/

Is anyone else planning on being there THIS Thursday eve?

No weatherspoons in Penkridge so can I suggest we meet in the Star on the

They serve food till 8:30pm.

See those who can make it tomorrow. I’ll be in the pub probably by 7:30pm as

I'll concentrate on fixing as many OSM Notes as I can ( many left by Christophe

the works on the new water pipeline are progressing. See you in the Black

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Block request - Reverted edits done

2017-07-10 Thread Andy Robinson
I've just reverted all edits from two new user accounts in Coventry and one
further set of edits from I think the same new user that started editing 18
days ago. I think all three were the same person(s) as the edits are all
similar (changing road names and adding other Asian related spam, mostly to
existing objects or new random nodes).

User names that ideally should receive a block are:
zaib666
zain666
zaibz

I would have added a block myself but I see the moderator facility has been
removed from my account. Might have been nice if someone had let me know

HI everyone

We decided at our last meeting to meet in Wednesbury on Thursday June 1st.
Usual practice of mapping in the early evening and meetup at 8pm.

I've consulted CAMRA's good beer guide and the Bellwether looks the best of the
bunch. Its at 3-4 Walsall St WS10 9BZ, close to the main shopping centre and
market (not mapped as yet!). Unless of course anyone has local knowledge and
knows a better pub.

Wednesbury is on the Metro line. It's faster to catch a train to the Hawthorns
and then get the Metro.

Ooh er. That’s rather nice. Thanks DG.

No real improvement in resolution, in fact what we had was perhaps better in
the areas I’m looking at, but it is more up to date and the benefit of two

and vegetation.

Didn't need to find the URLs as JOSM already had these new layers available.
But if for some reason your JOSM does not update then the URLs are available:

1. Go to https://github.com/osmlab/editor-layer-index/pull/323/files

2. Click load diff on the sources/world/DigitalGlobegeojsons
3. The URLs are shown

Harry, and everyone else,
I'm sure Brian will get back to everyone on all of this when he's back in

obviously a lot to digest and clearly there are some specific points to take on

I've created a wiki page specifically about the tree data import.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Birmingham_City_Council_trees_data

It would be better if somebody involved in running the import, would do this
(per the Import Guidelines), but I've drawn together various info I could find
from Brian's blog posts, and from poking at the data myself.

I didn't poke at the origin data. We could document the complete list of fields
they provide.
Also is the whole data set is now imported? I count ~43000 nodes, but Brian's
blog mentions 76,000 trees. How many changesets was that? To what extent has
the data now been modified after import? What is 'usrn'?

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Import Progress

2017-03-19 Thread Andy Robinson
Like all good OSM activity, discussion occurred in the pub. We may or may not
have got our knickers in a twist when we did but usually we get the things
sorted out. The Naptan and tree updates were discussed at length within our
small west mids group and I was (and am) happy to support. Brian has been doing
a fantastic job working with local groups who have data and the last thing I
would want to see is his efforts squashed. It's quite possible that some of
what gets added is crap and its also possible we have some inappropriate tags,
but let us get the stuff into OSM and we can sort it out where it's not
perfect. As a local group we generally know what we are doing, we've been doing
it now for over 10 years!

Cheers

No, he was sent this message:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/user_blocks/1271

because it appeared that the link between changeset discussions and his email
inbox was broken.

> There is clearly consensus for them in the local mapping community,

That was one of the questions asked in changeset discussions - can you please
link to where the "well-defined and transparent plan" for the "trees" import
was published, and where discussion took place?

> A well-respected member of the community should not be treated this way.

No-one doubts that Brian is well-respected member of the OSM community - few if
any have put in as much effort as him over the years.
Unfortunately even well-respected community members can have email filters go
rogue on them - it's not the first time that it's happened and I'm sure it
won't be the last :)

Best Regards,

Andy

(cc:ing talk@ because I know there's been discussion, including on IRC, outside
the West Mids about the trees import and as similar sort of council work is
being outsourced elsewhere, it's useful to discuss it more widely).

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] [Talk-GB] New editors working on parks

2017-02-02 Thread Andy Robinson
Mark, Welcome :-)

Probably not really a problem here in the UK because there are enough editors
watching over the data to spot big issues. Thus far any inappropriate additions
to the database have mostly been very local to the specific user, like adding
extra bits to parks, creating new ones in their area or the odd change of tag
to a water feature. They are easily reverted when spotted as these Pokémon
users don’t seem to be going on to continually add stuff. Hopefully it will
stay that way.

Hi Andy,

These are Pokemon Go edits driven by the fact that the South Korea release of
the game is definitely using OSM as the base map.

Total number of editors has picked up massively worldwide in the past few days
with a ridiculous peak of 3000 new users a minute sometime this afternoon
(although this may be a SEO-driven peak in the US).

Certainly whatever the basis of the influx its quite a lot to handle for
existing 'data curators'. See the current range of changeset discussions. It's
difficult to be sure, but I think there's an uptick in other edits too.

Hi OSM-GB,

The Environment Agency recently release a massive trove of Open Data, which I
am slowly started to process.

One of the smaller and quicker to process datasets is the Night Time aerial
imagery which I've now tiled and put online here:
http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/

Birmingham: http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/#zoom=12=52.4831=-1.8772
Peterborough: http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/#zoom=13=52.5743=-0.2588
Northhampton: http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/#zoom=13=52.2458=-0.8871
Swindon: http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/#zoom=13=51.5793=-1.7931
London (Mostly South):
http://ea.openstreetmap.org.uk/#zoom=11=51.5266=-0.0636

Unsure how useful the Night Time aerial imagery is for OpenStreetMap proposes,
but it sure does look good ;-)

Kind regards,

Grant

Tracing from an overzoomed Z18 is possible, especially when you swap

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] [Talk-GB] New St station platform alignments

2015-09-28 Thread Andy Robinson
I think it’s likely the only possible changes since New Street was built would
be at the throats between the ends of the various tunnels and the start of each
platform. There is little if any scope for change along the lengths of the
platforms themselves because the supporting columns for the upper structure all
pass through them.

I recall tweaking the tracks some years ago to better fit imagery as they were
definitely rough drawn before that but I expect with different imagery now and
folks messing about over that couple of years of changing its all got a bit
messy. Part of the problem is that a lot of the track radius is out of view. I
expect by using the NR concourse plan as a starting point you would get a
better alignment using the escalator locations.

Does anyone know whether the alignment of the platforms under the concourse is
based on anything other than pure guesswork? The alignment at either end where
they can be seen in Bing doesn't look right either. I'm trying to get the
concourse layout to match the platforms for lifts and escalators and they're
not quite matching currently.

I've seen the follow up emails, but I have gps traces of A14 to M6 from 8pm
Friday and now don't know whether it is worth using them to update the (then)
current arrangement which takes M6 bound cars onto the old carriageway that
used to be for cars in the opposite direction for a time (cars heading the
other way are on a newer carriageway that I think I've updated previously from
traces taken when heading home to Clacton).

This month's meeting will be on Saturday 4th July, so we can do some
serious mapping in Telford. Current suggested venue for lunch is The

4th July is their Annual Carnival so getting a pub where we can chat
might be a bit difficult! You can still map Oakengates as it needs
some attention and then move the couple of kilometres to Wellington.
Both Oakengates and Wellington have train stations. It might be an
idea to know who's coming and what areas you intend to survey. Phil's

I have the dining room at The Cock Inn, Wellington booked. Its a nice room, I

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Etrex Legend hcx - still the best in price range

2015-06-05 Thread Andy Robinson
There are some resources on the net that tell you how to refurbish an etrex
when the rubber has come off. Haven't tried it myself but have a unit that will
need doing soon. Basically involves a cleaner and some double sided tape.
Does the unit power up ok if you push the switch behind the rubber band, if so
a refurb should work if Garmin are not forthcoming?

Hi everyone
My trusty Legend hcx has just stopped working - Rubber protection band loose

repair - they've been good in the past !

But if I need to replace it what would you recommend ?
How does the Etrex 30 perform ?

I've changed all the boundary relations in the former county of the West

massive job. I think that we really don't need the ways any longer as the
