[OSM-talk-ie] Townland Sheets Request (Donegal West)

2014-11-04 Thread Conor Jones
Hi folks,

Requesting sheets:

- 14/39 SE
- 17/39 SW

If you want or have time, you could throw up all of sector 17/39, perhaps
sector 20/39 and any remaining in 14/39 and I'll work on getting them
rectified

Many thanks,

Conor / idnoc

Thanks very much for that rapid and helpful reply. The second link was
particularly impressive. Heck, all I have to do is click on the little "people"
icons to get full details.

Should I have been able to find those links myself ? I searched the wiki and a
couple of other places (I'm a "read the manual first" person) without success.

We have a list that ppl can add their name to:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ireland/Mapping_Townlands#Join_In

There's also a tool that will show mappers in your area.

http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/oooc?zoom=10&lat=52.80163&lon=-8.98625&layers=B00TFT

If you want to know who's mapping townlands in your county, rorym might be able
to add a feature to http://www.townlands.ie/ to list top 10 townland mappers in
each county.

He's created an issue to track this:
https://github.com/rory/osm-irish-townlands/issues/56

For new users it would be much easier if they map areas where there is not
a lot of existing mapping data.
ie - for mapping townlands they should probable pick rural areas where the
boundaries are easy to see as they usually involve old roads, streams and
field boundaries.

Mapping townlands in OSM-data dense urban areas is a lot trickier.

You'd also need to ensure that we have already uploaded any GSGS maps they
might require prior to the course starting.

Remember also the basic workflow is
1) Check/Fix alignment of existing OSM data so it can be used as a
reference for rectifying the GSGS sheets
2) Rectify the sheets on mapwarper using OSM data as the reference.
3) Start adding townlands in OSM using bing and gsgs sheets.
4) Have a few beers and pat your selves on the back.

2014-11-04 Thread Brian O'Hare
That's great Dave, many thanks. As I understand it they are quite
geographically spread, with a few coming from Cork. Would be great I think
to have them map their own areas to begin with. I plan to focus the
teaching on using qgis and other open source tools with some MapInfo thrown
in so hopefully consistency won't be a problem. Thanks for the feedback.

Brian.

I think this is a great idea. The only comments I personally would have are
to maybe spread their efforts around Munster a bit, that many people in one
county would possibly see editing conflicts due to the size of townland
areas. Also, so long as they follow the same steps I don't see any issues,
e.g. if they are going to be using something like ArcGIS to do editing then
there will likely be gaps in terms of consistency etc.

Other than that, encourage them to join the mailing list or Facebook group,

would be a founding piece of work in community advancement relative to GIS

We never did catch up after last time.

Hi all,

But we don't have a little logo for it. We have a few suggestions over

Does anyone have any suggestions for a logo? Any on that list that you like?

(P.S. We're over 12,500 townlands now with an ETA of just over a year!
Big pat on the back to all the mappers)
