[OSM-legal-talk] TeleAtlas data in OSM
Hi, I tried to send this to the foundation but I got no response, so I'm trying here. During an edit session I noticed a number of errors near my living area [1]. Comparing the area with GMaps [2] reveals too many similiraties. I have compared the OSM data with a dump of TeleAtlas DB which I use for work and I discovered that ways and nodes are exactly the same so I'm pretty sure that this data was uploaded from a similar dump. The changesets are all of the user moleilbevi [3]. Other users have mapped the area before this disaster so is not easy for me deleting only the ways copied. I've heard that commercial map data providers are asking up to 100 (depending on quantity) per end-user per year for their data licenses (for navigation purposes). So you need to have solid business case how to cover it (with advertisments) and a lot of money to cover the costs until you have enough revenues. Basically there should be way to show ads to each end-user in the average value of at least 100 EUR/year to break even. This sum cannot be more than a fraction of profit what is earned by the ad buyers, so considering all intermediates the total value of goods sold via the ads should be ~100 times larger than cost of the ads, i.e. 10.000 EUR/year, as average. Can you imagine that ads just in your mobile navigation software (what is typically used couple of times per month) can sell any goods for 10.000 EUR/year? You download first free (and really not so user-friendly) navigation app, and then every time you use it you also see some ads, and based on these make a purchase in the value of 100-1000 EUR, each time. This does not sound very probable to me. So the ad-supported commercial navigation business model just cannot work. I'm expecting that also Locationet's free Amaze will also shut down, or switches to to OSM or turns out to be mostly paid application. The data is so expensive, that for Nokia it was cheaper to buy whole Navteq to get it, and even for Google it was more reasonable to collect own database before they could meet their target price (zero). Of course Nav4all was not paying 100 EUR/year to Navteq for the 27 million end-users, they had to be negotiated significantly better deal, I guess next to zero. Navteq, due to demands from Nokia, or maybe even without it, was not interested to continue it this way. And it was definitely unfair for other their customers who had to pay the full price. Re: [OSM-talk] Request for user block
Is blocking the account going to be enough to prevent someone from simply signing up for a new account and continuing to do what they were unabbated, seems like a cat and mouse game and the cat is really slow to keep tabs on the mouse. Maybe a more subtle approach would work, i.e., have a bot remove his edits x days after they are saved. That way he can make his changes, show his similarly idiotic friends what he has done, and they will be deleted when he no longer has an interest in them. Every project that allows unlimited registration has this problem. It is not unique to OpenStreetMap. But in a lot of cases it won't be possible to delete changes after seven days as hundreds (in extreme cases) of people may have altered the same data. Either way I'm strongly against _any_ bot that automatically removes data and I very much doubt that will happen. A few ways that other deal with this are moderation of new accounts (this was also discussed previously), E-Mail ban (not very useful), IP ban (might work), just deleting or blocking the user or no-oping all the actions by blocked users. The last proposal in our case would mean that every write access to the API would work (it returns a success code) but all the changes are immediately discarded in the hopes that he won't notice. I don't propose any of those as the solution to use, I merely list what I have seen in other projects in the past and I bet there are more I haven't thought of. IP blocks can be very effective. I'm crewmember on one of the biggest Dutch forums and that is the most effective block we have. And it sometimes goes so far that we block an entire company/organization from even accessing our site. The effect then is that someone in the organization picks up on this and with sufficient evidence from our site takes action on the offender, at which point the block is lifted. But this does take up quite some resources. It is not 1 or even 5 people who moderate this. This of course comes after blocking on email address proves ineffective. Re: [OSM-talk] Fwd: Nav4All navigation shut down by Navteq
Hello Jaak, I think your price of E100 per user for map data is much too high. Remember that you can buy a new WinCE based GPS with touchscreen, processor, flash memory and maps for that kind of money and the device will last you a couple of years. Navteq may also (try to) segment the market: If your company distributes their maps to a segment of the market they are not currently tapping into, you will get the licenses for cheap. If you supply to the top end user (e.g. iPhone app), they will charge you much more. If you look at the Tom Tom financial statements, they have significantly written down their TeleAtlas asset. Likewise, Nokia must be regretting their purchase of Navteq. Intellectual property's real value can be multiples of replacement cost (like when these mapping companies were bought), or it can be a fraction of replacement cost. Google certainly has been the disruptor, by building their own maps for the US so quickly. Going down this path did cause extra labour as we've had a number requests to allow free domain emails because their ISP didn't offer email addresses, so this could potentially increase labour, allowing individual email addresses and/or just replying to emails about it. There are many small cheap ISP's here who don't give email addresses at all (you have freemail, so there is not great demand on this service), some of larger ISP's have their own freemail and they give paid customers also emails from same domain, so essentially, same situation as freemail (anybody can get freemail). Some ISP's give email account for extra money or their account is so limited, that it is basically useless (1 MB mailbox, etc ...) Also, some better ISP's will give you more than one mailbox (sometimes you can get dozens of mailboxes, sometimes only aliases, sometimes real mailboxes, often you can remove unused aliases and create new ones, so the amount of mail accounts is practically infinite), so even blocking nonfree emails may not always work. I don't think this is good idea. While this would reduce chance of some idiots for signing up for new account if they are blocked, this would affect also many innocent people who have just their freemail account and some people may still get around this quite easily. I think blocking IP addresses would be more effective (with most ISP's you get only one), though the block should be applied carefully and probably not permanently (shared or dynamic IP's) I think similar blocking scheme that is on wikipedia (when blocking IP's you can choose whether to block also already registered accounts or not, whether to block creation of new accounts and you can choose block duration) should be good enough. No. Free means free, and that includes people and organisations that you don't agree with. Some software in the 80s and 90s had in the license that it couldn't be used in South Africa due to apartheid. Now apartheid is over, and they still can't use the software. How silly. Also, let's not begin to be moralistic with information that is supposed to be freely available. Much like the software, OSM data is free to everyone. I would not feel comfortable if those I disagreed with began not letting me use their data, after all. OSM should not be punitive. The only requirements are those put forth in the license. 2) Most governments have far better data than what's in OSM. When you're a military, things like centimeter accuracy really matter. [OSM-talk] In-vehicle tracking and editing software for tablet computers?
Hullo, Does any one have any ideas about what programs I could use on tablet computers in vehicles for navigation and tracking, and possibly editing? The situation is this: We have a fleet of 15 or 20 vehicles traveling all over the state (Western Australia), each equipped with a tablet computer with a GPS and 3G modem (coverage for the latter is patchy). I need to track where they go, primarily; that's not really anything to do with OSM, I realise. However, the users also need to draw maps of various things (gates, creeks, power poles, fire tracks, etc.). And they already use various sorts of maps for navigation (from printed street directories to Google Earth). What I'm looking for is something -- I'm playing with Traveling Salesman at the moment -- that could combine all of these things, navigation, tracking, and editing. Any ideas? The annoying thing that I keep coming up against is the fact that the system needs to work offline for days at a time. I just thought I'd ask here, as if I can get this thing going well then it could be a good source of map data for out-of-the-way parts of WA. ___ Talk-nl mailing list Talk-nl@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-nl

Re: [Talk-de] Roll-Up für Messe
