how unfortunate. i ride with a bunch of motorcyclists that
aren't averse to dirt roads, but who like to know where they are --
20, or even 50, miles of dirt in a day is one thing, but 150 is
another. nice to know for planning, but you can't avoid dirt in
new england if you want to do any exploring at all. and while as
a group i think we have a large body of knowledge about what's
dirt and what's not in new england, no one person knows it all,
of course.

i have a message all prepared for that mailing list, extolling
the grandeurs of OSM mapping, and how they should all start
recording their knowledge in OSM. but if the renderers don't
show it, there's not much point in asking them to help add the
data.

tracktype and surface tags to differentiate between them.

No, neither Mapnik nor Osmarender draw surface=unpaved differently. I
assume the same goes for the more detailed values (gravel, dirt, ...).

For example, part of East 600 South here is tagged as surface=unpaved,

The best info I found:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:Manitoba
A tag is listed as a draft in
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MassGis_to_OSM_Attribute_Map used SurfaceType

I can see a real need for this like you mentioned.

I agree. I'll make them thinner, and adjust the width properly for all
zoom levels.

One problem is that the current width may be somewhat accurate for large
airports like Boston Logan, whose runways are between 100 and 150 ft
wide, but way too wide for smaller airports whose runways are often 75
ft wide or less. And even if the OSM data *had* the width for all
runways (which I'm sure it doesn't), hacking the mapnik style files to
create different cases based on width tends to quickly make them very
complicated.

I copied the runway style from the standard OSM mapnik style file, btw.

in new england (and i assume in other parts of the country)
it's not uncommon to have unpaved state numbered routes. or
unpaved residential areas.

i turned to the wiki, but i find i need some interpretive help. the

which seems like far too big a bucket for the roads i'm thinking

and finally, if i _did_ want to use "highway=track", shouldn't

Hey, Lars! The map looks really nice. One minor suggestion: you may
want to consider using the outline-style U.S. highway shield like most
commercial maps use instead of the black-background U.S. highway

contrast from the surroundings but not so well on a map.

[Talk-us] Toronto Mapping party this Sunday 03 May 2009

2009-04-29 Thread Richard Weait
Hi All,

How about a spur of the moment mapping party in Toronto this Sunday? I
know! What a great idea! And the weather promises to be perfect
too.

The goal is to "Clean up" the aerial-mapped area in Bayview Village by
getting the rest of the street names, local POIs including parks,
schools and shops. And hopefully we'll be able to add the Karsruhe
addressing schema information in this area as well.

More details and updates here:
http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Toronto/calendar/10288135/

It's going to be a tonne of funne.

Best regards,
Richard

P.S. Our Niagara region US neighbours, er, "neighbors" are welcome to
join us as well!
