My idea was to write letters to the editors of all the local
newspapers, in each letter we would tell the about the map and invite
them to look at the local map of thier area

I wrote a script to automate the usage of the press center :
http://capwiz.com/aauw/dbq/media/

here is the code, you can use that to send ca. 5000 letters

There is at least one English language flyer around.  If I recall the

Sounds like a good idea. But wouldn't it better to make it a bit more
distributed and personal? To my experience the local reporters like
personal stories and somebody as main actor for the whoel story
('somebody out of our middles does this and that').

For that kind of working, we created a german press kit, that reporters
like very much (got some feedback). If you would say that PR works
similar in US, I might ask the folks to translate the press kit to
english, so you can adapt it.

(still not sure if this might get in conflict with a personal press
portal for GB for instance...)

Hi,

I'm willing to either (a) take suggestions on what should be changed
(note that for the English-language flyer we already rotated the globe
on the front page to show the US, assuming that the flyer would be used
on both sides of the Atlantic...) and make the changes myself, or (b)
send someone the SVG and let them work it in Inkscape (I believe it's in
SVN already but would have to check if that is the latest version).

Then, for producing the flyer, there's the option of having our
publisher sponsor it (condition - our book mentioned in about the same
way it is now); this would mean that someone in the US would have the
flyer printed (I'd advise on which online print shop to use and so on),
take delivery of the goods, invoice our publisher for printing cost plus
a shipping advance, then send out the flyers in small(er) quantities to
interested members of the US community - all the operational details
e.g. how often shipped, what quantities etc. would be at the discretion
of whoever does it. - This is the mode we're using in England.

Or alternatively, do it without our publisher, just print whatever you
want, wherever you want, and let OSMF-US pay for it. I have nothing
against the original flyer being used as a basis for that if someone
wants to.

Frederik

I have room at my house and plenty of experience mailing OSM swag out to
people. I guess I should have been more clear. I totally would not have
suggested we get swag and mail it to people if I wasn't willing to do the
bulk of the heavy lifting. Though I do think it would be nice if we had a
few volunteers from around the country shipping regionally. But we'll handle
that farther down the road. Right now I just want to focus on picking
awesome swag that people think will help mappers grow their local
communities.

Also, just to be clear, OSM-US can only afford to mail swag to people in the
US. International postage rates end up making the cost of shipping more than
the stuff we are sending.

My two cents about the flyers. I really like the one produced by GeoFabrik.
However, it might be nice to make a few tweeks to that model so its more US
centric and plays better in this market. But thats just me...

Yes. The flyer is a direct translation of the German one. It is
distributed in the UK by Andy Allan through his OpenCycleMap shop, free
of charge for everyone; printing and shipping are sponsored by the
publisher of our OSM book which gets a mention in the flyer.

Our publisher is willing to do the same but it would need one person in
the US to take delivery of the flyers and distribute them further. If
anyone is interested, please get in touch. - Of course, OSMF US is also
free to style their own flyer based on our layout and not use the
publisher's sponsoring offer; I can make the SVGs available if anyone
is interested.

[Talk-us] Ideas for OSMF US Swag

2011-05-26 Thread Thea Aldrich
Hi US Mappers,

We are looking for ways OSMF US can help mappers who are interested in
throwing mapping parties, conducting outreach activities and bringing more
people into the community. The most frequent request we get is for OSM
branded materials that can be given out at mapping and speaking events. We
have obtained a great discount from a vendor and would like to purchase
things like pens, stickers, etc.

Our idea is that when a community member throws an event, they can contact
us and we will mail the supplies to them free of charge. Our question to the
community is: If you like this idea, what types of branded materials would
you like?

Thanks,

Thea Clay,
