Re: [Talk-us] TIGER 2008 Data is Out

2008-12-25 Thread Justin Adler
Hi folks,

quick question about this Tiger lines and OSM.

1) Are there any import scripts out there which are not rails or php? something
in .NET maybe?
2) Do the tiger lines have the following data (which could then be imported
into OSM) :
   a) State shapes (eg. California, New York (state), Illinois, etc)
   b) County shapes (eg. Cook County (IL), DuPage County (IL) etc)
   c) City shapes (eg. San Fran, Boston, Chicago, etc.)
   d) Suburbs (eg. Oak Brook (Chicago), Naperville (Chicago), etc)
   e) Neighbourhoods (eg. Tribeca (NYC), Chelsea (NYC)

Actually, are suburbs and neighbourhoods the same thing?

3) Does OSM have this data?

thanks heaps for any help :)

I really haven't looked at the conversion scripts in a bit. Has anyone
else?

LOL.I am looking forward to taking a look at the data to see if
it's an improvement for my part of Texas & to see what can be done
conversion-wise to get as much useful info as possible into OSM.

Not that I've seen. What they do publish is the TLID and TZID numbers in
their data. These are permanent segment and node numbers which do not
change from one Tiger release to the next, so you can do your own
comparisons and updates. It also means that if you want to synchronize
with them, you need to keep and maintain their TLID and TZID numbers.

yes -- i was really thinking of ongoing work, since you brought up 2008.
(it's not like this is the last time the to-import-or-not question will
come up.)

I don't think so, but since the data Dave imported into OSM was with the old
format (TIGER/Line) and the TIGER 2007/2008 data is in shapefile format, we
wouldn't really be able to use diff data anyway.

does the census bureau publish any sort of a "diff", or "delta" dataset?
i'd think that just in terms of raw crunching that having just the
differences from year to year would save a lot of work, both manual
and CPU-cycles.

[Talk-us] Tiger 2008 Data

2008-10-28 Thread Ian Dees
I just e-mailed the Census Bureau, and the friendly woman on the other end
told me that they were planning on releasing "TIGER/Line 2008" by the end of
this year. Keep that in mind when we are talking about importing 2007 data.
She said to keep an eye on the TIGER website (
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/) for updates about the 2008 data.
