The Talk2 List Fw: [access-uk] Loadstone GPS - free accessible GPS navigation for your mobile

2006-07-17 Thread Vanja Sudar
This seems very accessible, in fact way more accessible than other project
like wayfinder.

However, problems with this is that it's a counity based project and POV-s
are based on user imput rather than on propper developped maps, so in way of
accuracy it's years behind paied for products. So, sure, it's accessible,
it's free, but how reliable it is is another issue. Of course, the main
reason it's free is because it doesn't use propper projected maps because in
order to use them they'd have to pay for rights to use them, which, of
course would make product not be free any more. I guess, as it always was,
you get what you pay for.

From: "Monty Lilburn" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello all,

I just wanted to let everyone know about a new free GPS navigation
application called Loadstone GPS. It works on mobile phones and is
compatible with the various screen readers such as Talks and Mobile Speak.

To find out more information, visit:

http://www.loadstone-gps.com

Admittedly it may not be suitable for everyone but it's worth checking out
if you are interested in having accessible GPS navigation that works on
your mobile phone.

There is a mailing list set up for Loadstone GPS specific discussion as
well as general GPS navigation discussion. More info on the web site.

Re: The Talk2 List Publick Schools Suck

2006-07-17 Thread Vanja Sudar
Having gone to both blind and public school I would chose public school any
times. Sure both got it's advantages and disadvantages. Blind school
probablly make it easier for blind people for learning independent skills
and things that are more relevant to blind people only, but academicly
you'll definitely succeed better at a public school. Also socialy you'll do
better in a public school, unless your aim in life si to only always hang
out with blind people in whcih case imo you're just a sad loser. Also
schools for blind most of the time seem to give you this faulce sense of
reality, that everything will be OK, that life after school will be easy,
that world owes you things, that you'll haveeverything handed on the plate
for you because you're blind, that everyone'll love you because you're
blind, that everyone will respect you and be nice to you because you're
blind. Real world doesn't work like that.
Don't get me wrong, there are people who only went to aschools for the blind
and turned to be great people, but if I had a choice and if I ever have a
kid I'll do my best to make sure that it goes to a public school for reason
stated above.

Unfortunately in the case of public schools, a lot of stuff is going to
have to be dealt with by parents. The administrations don't know what to
do or expect with a blind student, so parents need to be the informed
ones and also to help provide information and support for it to work.
I'd send my blind kid to public school definitely over US blind schools,
but that's just me.
(Please note the US, from everything I've heard, overseas schools are
very different.)

The Talk2 List Ofcom allows iPods as personal radio stations

2006-07-17 Thread Vanja Sudar

Saturday July 15, 2006The GuardianBy Bobbie
Johnson, technology correspondent

A law banning gadgets that let iPod users listen to
their music over FMradio is to be overturned, it has been
revealed.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, said yesterday
that it wanted to liftBritain's ban on the gizmos, which can be used to
listen to digital music incars or around the home.

Devices such as Griffin Technology's iTrip are
hugely popular in the US andEurope, but using them is illegal in the UK.
Thousands of British consumersalready have the devices, however, thanks to a
legal loophole that lets thecountry's retailers sell them.

The gizmos work by allowing car radios or household
stereos to tune in toiPod signals and play music, using the same wavelengths
as radio stations.Although the devices only broadcast their FM radio signals
over distances ofa few metres, they were ruled illegal because of fears they
would interferewith commercial radio.

Despite the ban, thousands of people use the iTrip
or Belkin's TuneCastwireless transmitter to listen to their music on the
move. "The iTrip isactually our biggest-selling hardware accessory," said
Jonathan Cole, managing director of the iPod retailer
PopXpress.com.

"But we're in the strange position where it is
legal for us to sell itwithin the European Union, but customers can only use
it in other Europeancountries. I think it's all a bit silly really." Mr Cole
said hooking musicplayers up to other devices was one of customers' most
common requirements:"We must get 20 people a day in our shops asking how to
connect an iPod totheir radio or hi-fi."

Ofcom officials said yesterday that the popularity
of the devices had ledthem to reconsider the ban. "Low-power FM radio
transmitters for MP3 playersare currently unauthorised for use in the UK and
parts of Europe because ofthe potential to cause interference to broadcast
services," the regulatorsaid in a statement. "Ofcom is responding to growing
consumer demand for theuse of these devices and has led negotiations in
Europe to develop aharmonised approached to their use."

As part of the review, Ofcom could also broaden the
scope of CB radio andlift restrictions on other low-power radio devices such
as hearing aids, alarm systems and meter readers. If the consultation goes
smoothly the bancould be lifted by Christmas. Owners of FM-enabled MP3
players will not needa licence to operate the devices.

"I am delighted that Ofcom have ended this
ludicrous ban based on 1940slegislation," said Don Foster, the Liberal
Democrat culture, media and sportspokesman.A spokeswoman for the iPod
maker Apple refused to comment, saying theCalifornia company would only
speak publicly once the ban was lifted.

Meanwhile yesterday one of Britain's leading
charities issued new warningsabout potential hearing damage caused by MP3
players. The Royal NationalInstitute for Deaf People warned that youngsters
were risking prematurehearing loss by listening to their music at high
volume through headphones. The charity said 16- to 30-year-olds were largely
unaware of the possiblerisk to their hearing.

Hi Sam:

I am contacting you in a non-private manner, as I am interested in
obtaining a non-losey copy of Foobar. I've tried version 0.9, and yesw,
it does lose. You can't even stream stuff by default without downloading
some plugins. Er, bad?

I'm really getting annoyed with Winamp, ya know. Every version uses
loads and lots more memory, and has tons of unnecessary stuff. At the
moment, I'm running Winamp version 2.80 with some of the newer plugins
for compatibility of formats that it doesn't support by default, such as
AAC+, and the adition of the Global Hotkeys plugin, which sort of
half-way works on this here old version of winamp.

I want to eventually broadcast using Foobar, assuming a better way to
crossfade is found since the default one, at least according to a very
old instance of you, seems to lose.

I really didn't notice the digital signed mail, just because i'm strange and
really don't pay attention.

Then how about you get a digital ID, like the rest of us in the 21st century,
and not use a mail client that's a complete and utter peace of shit? The fact
that you obviously don't give a damn about the security of your email is not
my, or anyone elses, problem. Your options include using a better mail client,
installing software to filter out digital signatures, sucking it up and pushing
okay, or writing a script to press okay for you. Your options do *NOT* include
pretending to be the fucking list administrator when you're obviously not, and
trying to tell everyone else how they should send there email, for the
exclusive purpose of making you happy. Oh, and your one-line "read the help"
excuse for instructions do not qualify as helpful; if you want other people to
solve your problems for you, the least you can do is tell them how. I disabled
digital signatures, exclusively for email to the talk2 list, because Andre
asked me to and was willing to help me diagnose the problem, instead of giving
off bullshit and aditude, and telling people to disable digital signatures for
all there email everywhere, and refusing to tell them how (or eeven explain
what digital signatures are or who the problem effects). A mature way to
handle this problem would have been:
1. contact, privately, the people who's email is giving you issues, with full
and complete instructions on how to fix the problem.
2. sending a copy of this to Andre, and requesting a new rule for the talk2
mailing list, that he could either agree with or not.
3. Allowing him to inform the list at his disgression.

Your next steps include:
1. a private apology to Andre for attempting to pass yourself off as some sort
of list administrator.
2. A public apology to the list for the unwanted one line messages, aditude,
and spam telling us how to send our email.
3. A private apology to anyone using digital signatures on this list for being
a jerk, and failing to provide adiquit instructions to solve the problem.

One line messages, especially one line messages in defence of an action I
already disagree with, really, really, really, really piss me off.

Can we get back to discussing spam, dead braille women, stupidity, and
randomness, now?

I would just like to ask anybody on this list who sends mail that contains
Digital id's to disable them please because it makes reading the mail a bit
more of a pain and also stops people from easily being able to reply.

I'd about say that sums it up rather
nicely.
Girls perhaps are not worthy of attention in this
poor sheltered boy's life, we feel sorry for him in his days of
need.
Actually we don't.  Never mind.

tbrn, otherwise known to you as the site/host of
things and stuff will be back as soon as it gets its harddrive
  reinstalled.
After that point, and then after everything else
is installed, you can download more of your idle? idol, ital. or whichever you
like; but at least one or more of those is true for you.  As it stands,
as a loyal things and stuff fan, you should have every single bit that Patrick
has ever been a part of, and with shows alone, you could start a patrick fest
that would last you for many ages.
The only problem with that would be that with all
that Patrick in your life, you may not have anything left for a girl, should
you be interested in such things.

Yes, and yes.  But 0.9 sucks; email me
privately for an earlier version.  The advantages of foobar
include:
1.  no AOL nonsense
2.  no spyware
3.  better sound quality
4.  dsp stacking without a third party
plugin
5.  less memory use
6.  better playlist handling

  Hi,
I was wondering, does anyone here use foobar2000?
  Is it better than winamp?
  Thanks, Ray.
