I'll post a newer PDF later this weekend or the first part of the

Preliminary TB! Help File PDF

2005-05-10 Thread Dennis Hays
Batty Folk

As promised, I have uploaded a very preliminary PDF file (04
April 2005) showing some of the changes and additions to the
Help file Dierk Haasis and I have been working on.

This file shows new content towards the front of the PDF and
older, pre-existing content further back.

It's approximately 851kb and in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. There
are no security options enabled (as far as I know) and you can
feel free to print it, if desired (211 pages).

The Customise function, which brought on the witty comment
 alluding to
no documentation in the Help file for it, is extremely
 complex. All
sorts of hidden traps as well as bugs are being found in its
 lay-out
 and terminology.

Most of what we have done to date has been reading the old help
file and then poking around in TB to try and learn how it's
_supposed_ to work. When that fails, we send an email to Maxim
and he tries to send us in the proper direction. It may be
easier, sometimes, if I send a question here and solicit some
assistance...

BTW, I'd be more than willing to offer a PDF export of the help
text via a link if anyone wants to have a peek. At this point,
it may be preliminary, but by next week I think there will be
enough material to see where we are going with this.

Power comes at a cost. It's not acceptable to have limits because some
people just don't know any better. The car makers don't put speed

LG Now granted. IE made their primary mistake because everything was
LG on by default. But my point is that Microsoft gave the users
LG what they wanted without ever trying to tell them why it was
LG risky. The internet used to be a wonderful place, now you have to
LG check, double-check and triple check just about everything you do.
LG Popups were a great idea at first. A nice way to display

Firstly, speed limits in cars is a weak argument. People know their
cars can go faster, they don't often know where security exploits are
in any operating system. And, your retort about Microsoft not knowing
how their technology could be misused is also fairly weak. When MS
tied the browser to the operating system (Windows), it was a reaction
to their marketing goals of tying the personal computer to the
web--strictly networking. The reasons why their technology can be
misused is that the OS and IE are joined to such a degree that MS, in
a court deposition, said they couldn't be separated without losing the
OS integrity.

This, then is the rub. But then you could say if the browsers gain
popularity, then they too will be exploited. Yes, if they do it's
because of the holes in the OS... poor coding to rush a product to
market.

That Bill came out a year or so back and said he is making security a
priority begs the question, why now? --why not years ago?

And to bring this back to on-topic... designing a HTML interface to
TB! means making certain the doors between the client and os are
locked securely and then give the key to the user.

I like mine better! :) Kidding.
I guess the 'short list' can be quite different from video card to
 video card.

There is a set of resolution parameters that can be considered a set
of defaults:

800x600
1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200

Quite a few video card manufacturers use these, but that's not to say
that there isn't some other sizes that could be set by the user. But
for talking points, consider the above to be 'built in' where by TB!
can test for resultion and apply the last known (saved) or use the
next resolution down. What's the worst? The user will get a window
occupying less than a whole screen--much like mine is now (I'm running
2560x1200 on a Matrox Dual Head).

Maybe yours is better :)

I have to agree with Mary on this. I also consider any email

for me. From time to time, over the past years, I've evaluated
other programs and found them lacking in either feature sets or
in workflow. The price I have paid for TB!, including the recent

Most all the beta testers on this forum are customers of RitLabs,
as well. When they offer opinions as to bugs or feature
additions, they can't help but influence RitLabs.

While, from time to time, we differ with each other, all of us,
at the end of the day, are looking for one element: the
improvement of one product. Under normal circumstances it's a
symbiotic relationship.

I surmise that someone entering this discourse, with the sole
intent to denigrate the established relationship is doing so
with a separate agenda, especially if they prove, by actions and
testimony that they neither proffer working towards the common
goal or _buying into_ ownership--and, yes, the pun is intended.

The contributions on this list have been immeasurable over the
past years and we've seen a change in the working relationship
between beta testers and RitLabs in the recent past, due to
specific constructive comments hereon.

I'll say no more about this matter except to offer my respect to
both the developers and testers for what they've accomplished to
date.

Best,

I vote for encouraging RitLabs to hire a technical writing
 team with
an editorial staff and a line of organization which puts
 ultimate
responsibility for documentation on one person, the head of
 that
 editorial staff.

There has been communications on this list regarding TB!
documentation be it Help text, Acrobat PDF, hard copy, or other
form--as yet undecided. A sub-comment to the request alluded to
the membersip of this list having experience in technical
writing (I am also of that group).

Should TB! management consider these proposals, then I suggest it
look to the members of this forum that have both writing
experience and experience in using TB!. While that seems
obvious, I feel it worth mentioning as who better to address
this need than the users and testers hereon.

Should this proposal proceed further than the communication on
here, how should the tasks be broken out? Here's a first go at
it:

Basic Setup (including Accounts)
Account Properties
Templates QTs
POP Configuration
IMAP Configuration
Folder Maintenance
Network Administration
Preferences
PTV/RTV
Filters and Sorts
Address Book and Mailing Lists
Scheduler
Security
Anti-Spam

This is a gross overview and may represent personnel assignments,
with one person/group assigned one or more of the above and with
one person managing the flow and organization.

Yes, I know this is quite preliminary, but you (plural) raised
the issue and maybe some prodding in this direction is
necessary.

Comments?

Quoting MaXxX [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

On Friday, August 13, 2004, at 5:36:59 PM, time seemed to stop
 as 9Val
 uttered these words:

-snipped-
 1. There's only you, 9Val, who communicates in here - and you
 almost
save the day, but it still is too rarely. I don't mean it as
 an
attack on you - just a statement of fact: sometimes nobody
 from RIT
speaks for almost a week or so, right after releasing a new
 bug-loaded
beta... This, for a mature project, is unacceptable...

 2. The bug-hunting is not coordinated in any way. Even a bug
 that is
found, identified, and confirmed by multiple testers,
 sometimes simply
gets ignored, or the discussion about it changes topic, and
 everyone
 forgets about it.

--more snipped here--

MaXxX does bring up some valid points here and one, specifically,
I'd like to address. In more than one project, I've been a part
of a group called by some different names, but mostly by
_Configuration Management_.

This group worked with the developers to ensure packages
(software) were delivered with all parts: executable, help, and
documentation. But it was also responsible for publishing a
regular report, in most cases weekely, defining the state of
bugs, modifications, and enhancements. This report detailed each
reported item and said whether the line item was closed, in
progress, or open and also showed the date and/or release number
the item was scheduled for, if any.

The report is primarily a communications document produced from a
database that let all know whether or not a bug has been
reported (such as in bugtracker) and also whether or not the
testers comments, suggestions, and wishes had been duly noted
and either accepted or passed over.

I realize the current bugtracker has some of these parameters,
but it doesn't report whether a tester's comments, suggestions,
and wishes have been entertained and some, like MaXxX, can feel
slighted.

DH Sorry, that does not address the concerns I brought up.
`--[end quote]

All it does do is place the URL in front of the user prior to D/L. I can make an
initial assumption that there is 1 or 2 URLs known by TB and can be considered to be
valid, as far as a known location for smilies and Rogopics. Could the individual files
be compromised? Of course they can.

First, there's the issue of using these eye-candies. Those that want a semi-secure MUA
won't want to turn these on. That's step one; to enable or disable them (default to
disable?). Secondly, if the user does decide to enable one or both of these, then TB
allows the user to perform a semi-automatic D/L by putting the URL in front of his/her
face (and maybe a note to warn the user if the URL doesn't match the URL of record for
the eye-candy).

There is an element of personal responsibility. The only way to keep absolutely safe
is not to play (from WarGames, 1983).

`--[end quote]

After much thought, dinner with my wife and a Tanqueray and Tonic or 2 to mull this

While I'm not one to use smilies, as a general rule, I do understand their need/want
and how some may derive benefit from their use. Disabling the /Use smilie icons in the
HTML viewer/ disables *all* smilies.

What I think TB needs is a method to ensure (besides the check box above for those
that are anti-smilies) smiles appear when they're wanted and not as part of general
text where they weren't intended. So, if I use troops (\troops\), coops (\coops\),
hoops (\hoops\) and the like, I can be certain the reader of my missive see's the
words I used and not any icons replacing the text.

So, during the beta process, as we write back and forth, we should keep our eyes open
for unwanted text replacement (UTR). Then, the PDSF.MSL file can be adjusted
accordingly. Does that make sense?

font size, i.e., +1 and emboldened it to stress a phrase.

When I read the message, the font size will be 11 and the +1 font
size will be 12. Why? My default font size here is 11.

When another person who uses a smaller screen resolution and
therefore prefers to read with size 9 font. The font size for most
of the text will be size 9, and the +1 font size, size 10.

  etc. etc.

However, if you define an absolute size. I guess the word absolute
was bad. I do realize that the same font at size 10 will look
different on different monitors and at different resolutions. This
is exactly the reason why I believe it shouldn't be used. Let the
recipient determine what font sizes are readable for him/her. To do
this, don't define a font size and change font sizes only in a
  relative way.

---[END QUOTE]

Now, we're on the same frequency. Absolute font sizes are a
problem, but +1 is not absolute. It's relative to the user's
 setting.

I agree with you completely and, by doing this, the message
would be clear to all as to intent and as to any emphasis.

Anybody ever changed the colour of the MT font? It stays green here
   when I try.

To paraphrase Henry Ford, You can have any color you want as long
as it's green. Mine stays green as well--confirmed.

Re[3]: Kaspersky plug-in - working or not?

2002-03-28 Thread Dennis Hays

Hello Alexander,

I have PC-cillin 2002 set to examine my attachments folder. This
has quarantined a virus or two over the last week (stupid Outlook
Express client with a false return address of Screen Saver
[EMAIL PROTECTED]--WORM_YAHA.A virus).

As long as I have TB! set to dump attachments in the Attachments
folder, PC-cillin seems to work quite well.
