A classic case was when Norton issued a bug ridden database update at the end of business at the start of a long weekend. We were plagued with false positives for days. They are still broken in .23 and I have reverted to .20 for now, which is the last time they worked. From .21 onwards, I am unable to reply without spending time manually rewriting the sig and top sections. This feel like it may relate to a changed inheritance of the %ISSIGNATURE status? I, too, have seen the "Cannot write to canvas" errors and have seen "out of resources" errors, empty pop-up error boxes, empty new message windows (where empty = just the window border drawn with system icon at the left and no content - just transparency to desktop or TB main window). In fact, I got these errors within 1 minute of loading up the .23 build. -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.1.11.20 on Windows Vista 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 ' pgphSBcbERPi6.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.1.11.23 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

But there are safer ways of telling TB to set the address for you that don't make it replace valid addressing by "accident". I see Roelof has given you the folder template "safe" TO changer. That will fix the problem for you. G> At my action before, I choose an ACCOUNT, not a folder! Indeed. And TB has no instructions to change the "current folder" selection. Which mean that TB is forced to use the selected folder's new message template. G> That message should have been written to that site, using my G> choosen account-address. Okay, but it's only doing what you told it to. Folder Templates *can* cause apparently weird behaviour and should be used with care. That macro that Roelof gave you should be used (with suitable modifications) in *all* folder templates that set a TO address. -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.1.9.1 on Windows Vista 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 ' pgp0LkauikQWH.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.1.9.1 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Or should we wait for Ritlabs to confirm TF> whether this is a bug or WAD? It's really a bug. There's clearly an internal a flag that says "Body has been edited - do not re-apply template". There clearly should be a similar flag for the address. Having said that, I think Stef tried to get it sorted out once but it ended up worse. Some address changes *do* require a body re-evaluation since, e.g., you may be intending to trigger a specific address book template to reformat the message body. A balance is what we need. Separate evaluation of the manual modification state of the address headers and to ignore recipient changes when re-evaluating the template. Perhaps it's to do with timing. The template is being re-evaluated when moving into the body edit window. I can see the logic there too - all header changes are complete - it's the best time to re-evaluate the body content. But if the template used calls for a change to manually edited headers - that should be protected somehow. Bugs I've noticed recently
Hi TB Beta list members, The current release, 4.0.20.0, is behaving here in 2 ways: 1) The auto backup backs up to the default location (a drive short of space) despite having been told to store elsewhere in another file on a drive with much more room. Nasty! 2) TB is freezing. It is usually minimised to the tool tray. Sometimes there may be new mail in the ticker, in which case I can right click the ticker and get into the Vista program restart. Otherwise, I have to terminate the task and restart. Has anyone else experienced this? Did I miss a bug report or two? Can I do anything to better document this last issue to get it pinpointed. Besides these, I still have no way to send mass mail nor any working "Create message from filter" since moving to this new Vista laptop last July. This last pair of issues are major for me. I beg anyone who has any such issues or any suggestions to un-constipate my mass mailing and my filtering to help me out here! -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.0.20 on Windows Vista 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 pgppCDdBWNu3I.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.0.18.7 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Dear Paul, @5-Mar-2008, 07:14 -0500 (05-Mar 12:14 here) Paul Van Noord [PVN] in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck: ... PVN> years. The "Parked in Outbox" concept is not intuitive and I cannot PVN> recall a single user figuring this out on their own. I don't actually buy that. Fact: you are editing a message. You have 4 disposition buttons at the top (and menu options). Hover help tells you "Save as draft" on the 3rd button. Every single user can figure that much out. It is a totally minor reach to discover the saved draft message in the outbox. The default column configuration shows the parked flag. What's to figure out? Fact: hit F1 while editing a message - even a novice user knows how to get help. There it is, plain English (or whatever is the language used in the translation being run), in the help: ,--/ From TB help \-- Save message as draft 1. Go to Message 2. Select Save message as draft Note: Your message will be put in the Outbox, flagged as draft preventing The Bat! from sending it `--\ End /-- While I accept that conceptually a user may not come up with the "Parked in Outbox" blindly, I do not accept that it is not obvious when you need to use it. I don't have a problem with the request for the feature. I have a real problem with the weak arguments and flawed logic used to support the request. PVN> Some struggle with it constantly. I monitor these lists and the forums - I get full email feeds as an admin. This is not even an FAQ let alone a "constant" gripe. If you want to argue a point, facts help. I accept that you may have a different source of user enquiry and I'm only talking about the official TB support channels. PVN> As with you I appreciate TB's way but as a trainer of new users I PVN> assure you a Drafts folder is far more intuitive. Only if you came from software that had one and, as a new user, you are looking for the feature without actually trying to use it. PVN> The argument that it is redundant is invalid as there are many of PVN> those in TB and most software. If it were valid why are there PVN> formatting buttons in the editor? We already have the menus and PVN> hot keys! Here, you are talking about 2 routes to the same functionality - standard throughout just about every windows application - menu functions replicated in handy toolbars. That argument has no connection to the request for a separate drafts folder. It's a whole different scale of work involved. Most IDEs have a very simple mechanism for tying menu functions to toolbars. The kind of redundancy I'm talking about means having to write reams of new code to support something that adds nothing new. It may happen - I don't know. I know that, as a programmer I wouldn't like to do it. For all I know, it may even require a complete re-write of the outbox functionality. Like I say - you, and others, may want the feature and I don't actually object to the request. I just object that nobody seems to be able to make a sensible argument in favour of it without using flawed logic and exaggeration. That's not a challenge, btw. I've said all I'm going to say on this topic. Over to the wishlist and the whim of the RITs. ;-) -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.0.14.9 on Windows Vista 6.0.6000 ' pgpAXe10TVpPd.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.0.14.9 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

DC> That is what they said about an HTML viewer, an HTML editor, etc. That existing HTML support worked well? Erm ... no that's not what was said. But it *is* what I'm saying about the handling of drafts in TB. ... DC> Certainly the minority need the bloat related to dealing with PGP. PGP bloat would only have been bloat had it been added later. It was part of the *original* TB design and implementation - pre version 1. If you are going to take the route of calling innate functionality "bloat" then your argument becomes fundamentally flawed. DC> There may be good reasons/excuses, but this isn't one of them. "Like with like" is the best way to compare. You've managed to not do that by only focusing on the last sentence of my post (which maybe I shouldn't even have bothered to say) and not the meaning. I think that the above quote from my post - the meat of what I was actually saying - *is* very far from what was said about HTML support. Yes the "no bloat here" is always a poor excuse when a feature is entirely lacking or the way of getting the functionality is convoluted. But my point was not about minority requests but about requests for functionality that already exists and works well. I accept that you (and others) like the idea of having a separate drafts folder. A folder you can edit messages in and they would never be sent. I personally don't think this idea offers any *new* functionality. I like keeping my drafts in the outbox, neatly parked, all in one place. Colour coding works well for differentiation if needed. if Stef or Max want to add a folder in which you could edit messages without them being sent ... up to them really. What *could* be useful, and would make my initial suggestion of a "roll your own drafts folder" workable (I accept that it won't actually work as stands) would be making the "Parked" flag sticky across folders, so that messages can be moved in and out of the outbox without losing their parked status. That could help. -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.0.14.9 on Windows Vista 6.0.6000 ' pgpBqMKQjMYSd.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.0.14.9 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

The fact remains it is a minority request for which there is already sufficient functionality implemented in the software. The "Parked in outbox" method works superbly and the majority do NOT want to see TB bloated with redundant features to please the minority. The fact remains, parking remains the method used in *this* client for keeping drafts and postponed sends alike. The account does not have "Use S/MIME" ticked in the account properties - options settings. The QT used for the mailing asks for UsePGP and SignComplete. So, to humour it, I generated a new S/MIME certificate when prompted to provide one. Here, a side issue / bug was exposed. Even though I generated a brand new valid certificate (and added the certifier to the cert root address book), the OK button remained firmly disabled. I had to cancel the operation and restart it to get to use the new certificate. All academic really - I didn't ask to use S/MIME at all!! Then, having got everything in place, the operation was thwarted by another error - "No certificate for (first recipient)", Now when I try to do the mass mail, all I get is: Could not create a message for Recip Name <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Please check your free disk space and file system integrity. The hard drive has only 7.2gb free. Would it need more than that? I think not. The file system integrity is fine. It's been quite a while since I have been able to mass mail. Message creation from filters is also still a no-go for me from a non-primary account. MM> Anybody can check it yet? It's a tough one to check completely until the next MSI build is out, since that is responsible for the primary associations and client registry settings. I used the "Associate now" options and they no longer break the manually corrected registry data for the TB email client in the latest builds. But the original reports from Charles were about the Installer and not simply the file associations. -- Cheers -- //.arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator and fellow end user TB! v4.0.14.5 on Windows Vista 6.0.6000 ' pgpiUmmEi5iqL.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 4.0.14.4 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
