Two Problems with 5.0.0.107

2010-11-24 Thread Morton A. Goldberg, DVM
Greetings --

After reading the recent reports by the brave souls who installed the
alpha when it was first released, I decided to take the plunge. For
the most part, so far so good -- but I have run into two problems.

  1) In order to try the new IMAP code, I deleted my (seldom-used) AIM
(AOL) account, including the mail files, and re-established it as an
IMAP account. While the basic IMAP and SMTP functions both worked, The
Bat's system resource use gradually climbed until it was using over
80% of my CPU power. Tried it twice to verify the problem, and finally
ended up deleting the IMAP account and reverting to POP.

By comparison, even with 7 POP email accounts all in use at once, The
Bat's CPU use runs about 2%.

  2) Version 5.0.0.107 ignores my choice to "Mark message as read only
when it is open in a separate window," and instead marks it as read as
soon as I select it for display in the preview window.

Confirmations, anyone? Should I file bug reports on either or both of
  these?

Incidentally, the (much-improved!) URL Manager, now apparently called the
Image Manager, has one Cyrillic label at the top of the menu to the
  right of the lower window.

I have only been using this new version for a few hours, but so far, I
have not run across any problems other than those already mentioned
here. Great job, RITLab programmers! IMHO this version looks very
  promising.

PNG Picture Import Problem

2009-07-28 Thread Morton A. Goldberg, DVM
I just ran into a problem I haven't seen reported yet. Tried importing a PNG
picture to one of my address book entries. Even though the PNG format is
supposed to be supported, I got an alert box with an error message:

"Unknown Graphics Stream Format"

So I converted the picture to a JPG and tried again. That time, it imported
normally.

Can anyone confirm? If so, I'll file a bug report.

SC> Sorry this question was meant for Morton.

No, it doesn't. I've been creating it by simply dragging over a copy of the
shortcut from the Start Menu --- the one created during the installation.
Therefore, it does not even include the full path name of the executable ---
just the greyed-out legend "The Bat! Professional Version 4.1.9"

I suspect that's why the QuickLaunch icon breaks with each new installation
--- because that version number changes, therefore the system "thinks" The
Bat! is no longer installed. If so, then the easiest way to fix the problem
would be for the installer to create shortcuts which include the full path
name --- which does not change with each upgrade.

Meanwhile, I suppose a workaround might be to manually create a QuickLaunch
icon which DOES include the full path name, and perhaps a "Start In"
directory, too. If the next MSI file doesn't corrupt it somehow, it ought to
work.

Installed with just one problem --- not a new one, but I've never seen it
mentioned before. Every time I run one of the MSI files, it breaks my
QuickLaunch icon. Instead of launching The Bat!, it brings up an alert box
that says the icon is only good for installed products (???). Only fix is to
delete the QuickLaunch icon and manually create a new one, which then works
fine until the next time I run an MSI file.

It would be nice if the MSI installer included the option of creating a
QuickLaunch icon by checking a box, but at the very least, it shouldn't break
one that's already there.

"Unread" Tab --- Finally Fixed!

2008-08-18 Thread Morton A. Goldberg, DVM
Version 4.0.28.3 is U&R. The first thing I did was to test the "Unread"
tab --- and found that the problem has indeed been fixed! The former
behavior, in which the name of a folder changing from "unread" to "read"
is un-bolded, but the folder stays put, has finally been restored.

Thank you, Stefan. IMHO, now that this annoyance has been resolved, the
new version of The Bat! is ready for prime time.

Please add a note about this to the bug tracker at

been marked as "Fixed" when it is anything but. Even Robert, who first

If those of us who care about this bug don't speak up and let Stefan and
the other programmers know that there's a serious problem here that requires

Please go re-read the Bug Report at
https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6632 --- specifically, the
numerous comments which have been left by others since you initially
made the report. I am by no means the only tester who has been
repeatedly bringing this bug to the programmers' attention.

Please pay special attention to comment (0021446) by tomtpe on 26 Mar
2008 17:17, in which he said in part:

"Also, when all messages in one folder are read, the order changes
again. I have the feeling that the folder with now no unread messages
jumps to the bottom. This again messes up the order, it is not as it in
All tab.

"The request was to make the order the same as under the All tab. It's
not fixed, IMHO. If it is, it is not apparent to me, and certainly not
as intuitive to a new user as was in the previous implementation."

I then added another note confirming his observation, (0021483) by
Morton A. Goldberg, DVM on 27 Mar 2008 20:57, in which I stated,

"I see exactly what tomtpe means. Problem is that when contents of one
folder have all been read, the old behavior was to un-bold the folder
label, but leave the folder in place. Now, the folder label is un-bolded
as before, but in addition, the folder jumps all the way to the bottom
of the stack, making it necessary to scroll all the way up to its old
location in order to resume where you left off. Very annoying, and I
hope you can restore the old behavior exactly as it used to be."

A few weeks later, Pat added this comment, (0021649) by Pat on
16 Apr 2008 06:38, confirming both of the previous observations:

"Please fix so that when in Unread folder tab, deleting or reading all
messages in a folder does not make the folder jump to the bottom of the
folder list, forcing the user to find his place again in the list."

In addition to the comments in the Bug Report, there has been a bit of
discussion of the problem on this list. This exchange took place on 12

Not here, I just checked:

1. Any folder in which all the unread messages have been read, jumps
to the bottom. This shouldn't happen - the order should be maintained.

"Which is not a big problem when there are only a few folders in which
there are unread messages, but becomes pretty annoying when there are
more than can be listed on one screen (whithout scrolling, that is)."

"The reason I depend heavily on the Unread Tab in the office is that
there are well over 100 folders, so scrolling would be necessary. The
introduction of the Unread Tab increased efficiency tremendously, as
only the folders with unread messages are shown. However, if there is
any "jumping around" and the folders don't stay on the order as in the
All view, the purpose is completely defeated. I am using 3.99.x in the
office until the behaviour of the Unread Tab is back to what it was in
that version. The current behaviour is a show-stopper for 4.x in the
office for me, despite all the other new goodies."

That last comment by Thomas expresses my view perfectly. I, too, have
well over 100 folders in my tree, and find the new behavior to be a
show-stopper.

Unlike Thomas, I have not dropped back to 3.99.x, because I am now
retired and no longer feel the time pressure I did while running a
veterinary practice. However, if I were still in practice, I would
almost certainly stop using the beta releases until this problem is
fixed.

I cannot imagine anyone with a large number of folders being satisfied
with the present behavior, particularly if they are upgrading from a
previous version in which the "Unread" folders stayed put, but became
"un-bolded," once all of their contents were read. If this problem is
not fixed before the forthcoming release, RITLabs should be prepared for
a deluge of complaints from disgruntled users.

There is one showstopper which has been reported many times before over
 the past 7 months, https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6632
(0006632: Impossible to use folder list sort order from 'All' on
 'Unread' tab).

With its present behavior, the "Unread" folder view is difficult and
awkward to use. Whenever the last unread message in a folder is opened,
that folder jumps to the bottom of the list, forcing the user to scroll
upward through the entire list in order to find his place.

Please restore the old behavior, in which the folder remains in the
same place, but its name is unbolded. That simple change would make the
"Unread" view far more useful and user-friendly than the present
 implementation.

New Editor Bug

2008-04-21 Thread Morton A. Goldberg, DVM
Since changing over to version 4.0.20.4, I have noticed an annoying new
bug in MicroEd. It has become very difficult to cut a paragraph and
paste it somewhere else. The reason is that when moving the cursor to
the new location, it highlights the underlying area as though the left
mouse button were depressed.

I think that what's happening is that for some reason, MicroEd is now
recognizing the mouse hover function.

To duplicate this bug, try this:

1) Open an ordinary text message in PTV.

2) Begin a reply to the opened message in MicroEd.

3) After writing some text, highlight a paragraph, release the left
mouse button normally, and cut the selected text to the clipboard.

4) Using the mouse, try to move the cursor to the new location into
which the selected text is to be pasted.

This bug will cause the entire area between the old and new locations to
be highlighted, and will also cause the cursor to scroll farther and
farther to the right in an uncontrolled manner.

Confirm?
