You are quite correct. I am leaving all messages retried with The
Bat! on the server and am periodically downloading them all to Eudora.
If I write a message that is important I forward a copy of it to
myself so I get with Eudora also.

Accordingly, I have now downloaded and installed the Beta...only
problem is that I don't see what is new. Is there some list of the
 new or different features?

That's because you don't want auto line wrapping when you're using a
long string of macros or regular expressions. One way to work around
this is to open a new message, type what you want in your template and
then copy and paste it into the quick template editor.

Note that even the new message editor may feel strange to someone new
to TB. You can make the editor behave more like a typical windows
editor by using the autoformat options. Be warned that this feature
has some oddities, so you may want to switch back and forth between
using it and disabling it. I would post more details, but I can not
beat the explanations Allie (aka Curtis) has given previously.
Unfortunately, I can not find one of his explanations right now. You
may have better luck searching the archives for this list.

Colour groups are essentially the same as labels in Eudora. TB also
lets you change the font as well as the color, however. You can choose
whether to view the label associated with each color or just the in
the list of message color (View > Message List Columns).

> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it

I use flags to mark messages that I want to get back to later for
various reasons. The big advantage of the flag is that I can search
for all my flagged messages, throughout my account, and thereby find
messages that I wanted to deal with but which may be tucked away in
various folders.

Color groups.

Assuming, of course, that all flagged messages are of a similar group. It
is just a bit with functionality that can be replicated a variety of different
ways. So far I've not found a single way of organizing the message list that
flags addresses any better than any other method.

Hello,

I am new , so forgive me asking a dumb question:

Is there a mail preview option ?
I have looking thru all the menu's and I can't find any.

I was looking for someting like 'Get mail'
but it stops after fetching mail headers and presents
you a tabel view of all the headers (from, to, subject, size)
after wich you can select the mails your interested in (or all)

This is especially handsome for if your trying to get an urgent

Is something like this avalaible or not ?

More newbie Questions

2000-07-13 Thread Katsmeow

Thought of two more.

1. Quick Templates look great to me and I want to use them. However,
when I start to type in one, it is all one line and the line does not
wrap. Also when I insert it in my message it does not wrap. It does
wrap for the recipient but that doesn't help me. I need to be able to
have it wrap on the screen for me as I need to customize the exact
language so need to be able to see it. For example, in Eudora I have
stationary where I have set up a form letter to send to people who buy
books. I fill in manually the amount. I am having problem setting up
a quick template as it is hard to do this when it won't wrap during
creation or when I insert it. I am sure I am doing something
wrong...but what?

2. If I want only unread messages displayed, do I have to manually
set that each time the program opens by going to View and then Display
or can I set a default for only unread messages to show?

Should be a bug since CNTL-+ and CNTL-- expand and contract the current

antithesis of CNTL-*, should contract all threads.

of "Newbie questions":

The Bat goes a step further even than that. By using Address Book
templates (which override folder templates) you can get specific
formats/sigs for specific destination addresses.

K> Also, Eudora gives me big resource problems.

You are coming to TB at a good time then. A lot of resource issues
were handled in the most recent mailbox database improvements.

K> 1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you

Colour groups are a fairly new feature. You can set them up in Options
... Message list colours. You can assign them to messages in messages
lists manually or through filter actions.

K> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
K> puts a red flag next to the message?

Yes. It can be used as a search / filter criterion too.

K> 3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
K> so, what?

Only colour groups and memos. It's a different universe.

K> 4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
K> Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
K> This is fairly easily done in Eudora.

Using the Message finder dialog (tools .. search). You can search a
specified folder, include sub folders, the whole account or all
accounts.

K> 5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw

K> is delayed.

The speculation was going on in February. The date speculated was end
of May.

K> Any ideas when the next version will be out and why it is held up?

We know that V2 is being worked on. We have no Beta (or even alpha)
launch dates. It'll be there when it appears, I suppose.

K> 6. Anyone know if additional font choices are expected for later
K> versions.

Please refer to the article on Fonts in the FAQ. There is good reason
for the restriction.

K> 7. Oh, when writing a message, is there any easy way to switch back
K> to the main The Bat page? I find myself needing to do so, and find

Use the "Options .. Define System Hot-Keys" settings to pervert a key
to your own design for this purpose.

Hello Katsmeow,

let me first ask you to not begin a new thread by replying to an
unrelated mail, because it messes up the threaded view. Thanks.

You wrote on 7/13/2000, 8:42 PM

K> Anyway, I've read the help files but still have questions (and
K> probably more to come):
Fine.

K> 1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you
K> create it?

You can assign each message in the message list to a "colour group".
It makes a better visual experience when navigating the folders.

You can create a colour group in Option -> Message List Colours.
You can set the font's script, style, and colour for read and unread
states separately.
In Sorting Office -> * -> Rule -> Actions you can set the colour
group, or you can filter on it (see the Advanced tab)

K> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
K> puts a red flag next to the message?
Yes. Before flagging I usually used parking to mark a message, but it
has the side effect that I cannot remove the message in one step, so I
better like flagging. (And I am still able to use parking for
important mail)

K> 3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
K> so, what?
I do not know Eudora, but maybe Memos worth a look.

K> 4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
There are three radiobuttons in the search dialog:
o search in folder
o search in current account
o search in all accounts
The latter two options are relevant.

K> Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
K> This is fairly easily done in Eudora.
Not one I know.

K> 5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw

I would not expect TB2 to appear in this year, maybe beta versions...

Really? I use it quite a lot. I might be visually less obvious than

to sort by flag (so all flagged messages would be presented

I would never presume to call the keymap "smart," nor would I presume
that people have a numpad, I was just trying to offer *the single way
available to do it*. I guess RIT figures if you can't do it, tough
luck.

Even reading messages is a major pain in the ass on my laptop 'cause I
have to use two hands to go to the next unread message since there's
only one "Control" key on my keyboard.

If only we didn't have to wait 'til v2 to have a useful keymapping.
:(

I'm not bitter today, I'm just in no-nonsense programming mode right
now; trying to get this stupid PlayStation2 renderer up and running.

Yes. Quite pointless to me, actually. I wish I could shut that off
completely on all new folders and folder views

Labels?

God, Eudora does it so poorly it isn't funny. In the search dialog you
have search specified folder, search subfolders, search account and search all
accounts. All are fairly self-explanatory.

v2.0? Feb of this year was when the interview about it was, nothing more.
It'll be out when it is out.

What fonts would you need? AFAIK all monospaced fonts are available and
proportional fonts in email are wrong.

The main The Bat page? Huh? You mean the main window. Click on it,
Alt-TAB to it. Just like any other application.

Confirmed.

To add to Steve's bug report:
If you keep pressing tab, the object focus does not go in a loop back
up to the top of the current tabbed view. Instead, it goes on to the
next tabbed view. Press it several more times, then go find the object
now focused in another tabbed view! Odd behavior.

Newbie questions

2000-07-13 Thread Katsmeow

I am a longtime Eudora user trying out The Bat. I decided to try it
out because I like the idea of templates for each mailbox (in Eudora I
always wanted to be able to have it automatically know which sig I
wanted to use for each list). Also, Eudora gives me big resource
problems.

Anyway, I've read the help files but still have questions (and
probably more to come):

1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you create
it? I feel like I must have missed this in the help file but have not
found anything so either it isn't there or I didn't know it when I
read about it.

2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
puts a red flag next to the message?

3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
so, what?

4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
This is fairly easily done in Eudora.

5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw
speculation that would be out in February this year but obviously that
is delayed. Any ideas when the next version will be out and why it is
held up?

6. Anyone know if additional font choices are expected for later
versions.

7. Oh, when writing a message, is there any easy way to switch back
to the main The Bat page? I find myself needing to do so, and find it
less than easy to do so.

Thanks for any help.

The Bat! - bug report

2000-07-13 Thread Steve Lamb

Hello The Bat! developers,

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.44
  Serial Number 03290604
under Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 5
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:
Filter dialog has inconsistent behavior when it comes to mouse and tabbing
through the fields. This requires both the mouse and keyboard to be used to
be able to create new filters.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:
Create a new filter. Try to use the mouse to enter the text box for the
string to search on. Will not work.

From that field (must be tabbed into) try to tab into the drop down boxes
next to it. Will not work.

bug report- idle looping window

2000-07-13 Thread Radek Pytlik

Hello The Bat! developers,

  I'm using The Bat! Version 1.45 Beta/7
  Serial Number D9D0157E
  under Windows 98 4.10 Build A
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:

A quite serious problem with retrieving messages using 'Mail
Dispatcher' has happened to me recently. It occurred to me when
'Invoke automatically on each email check' was enabled. First I was
able to see message headers being counted, next the 'Idle looping'
window appeared, but its 'Cancel' button was disabled. Finally, the
'Message Dispatcher' window did not pop up and TB! did not want to
shut down at all. So I had to close it by force using Ctrl+Alt+Del.

The problem has happened several times when using different
(earlier) versions of TB! The last time I experienced it was, while
using v1.45beta/6 .

Has anyone encountered a similar problem with this 'Idle looping'
window?

  Radek Pytlik

I don't think one can change to background of icons in TB. Have you
checked your Windows color/appearance settings as Thomas suggested?
Do you have any "theme" installed? Another possibility is Windows
messes up its icon cache. Try boot to DOS and delete the file
"ShellIconCache" in your Windows folder. (You'll have to unhide it
first with the attrib command.)

Disabling "New mail" sound for the Trash folder...?

2000-07-13 Thread Mark R Harding

Hi TBUDL,

Via filtering I direct certain messages directly into the Trash folder
just as I direct other messages, via other filters, into other
folders. For the other folders I can change or disable the 'new-mail'
sound that is player when an email is dropped directly into the
folder. However, I cannot seem to disable the new-mail sound for the
Trash folder - there being no appropriate menu tab on the folders
properties dialog.

Is there any way this can be achieved (besides filtering into another
'dummy' folder first of all) because I'd really like to switch this
off.

Cheers,

Mark

Hello Hans,

AFAIK this is not a easy Task

But have you tried the new lng file that can be fond at:
http://www.ritlabs.com/ftp/pub/the_bat/beta/lng.rar

I just check and there are still some of the newer Features not
translated maybe you can check back with Ritlabs and offer them to do
help with translations

There also was the Idea to release a Tool for translating menus
...but I never heard anything about this.

Re[2]: Importing messages from Outlook Express

2000-07-13 Thread Norman Lamont

Hello Ming-Li,

Cracked it eventually!

Using your suggestion about regedit I found where the one identity was
storing its mail.

Looking in Explorer I found that there were three similar folders with
different long-string names.

I also found there was another one, which had the same pathname
without the long-string name, in other words windows\application
data\microsoft\outlook express

It had some of the same dbx files but not all. There was a subfolder
'mail' which had them all. I copied the dbx files from the 'identity'
folder listed in regedit into this new outlook express folder and TB found them and
imported them!

Nothing's ever simple, is it?
So it seems I now have five more or less identical copies of all the
email and newsgroups I've stored - the three 'identity' folders plus
this 'non-identity' folder plus its subfolder 'mail'. No wonder
Windows takes up so much space!

Thanks to everyone at TBUDL for their help.

Why are all my icon background non-transparent?

2000-07-13 Thread Viboon Chaojirapant

Hi All,

I have just installed The Bat! upon recommendation from
my colleague. I think it is a great/powerful program.
However, I have a very frustrating thing which I can't
resolve:

Somehow, the background of all the icons in The Bat! turned
to grey color. This include folder icons, flag icons, park
icons, account icons etc. So instead of an icon on white
background, I am now looking at icons with grey opaque
background, which I think is really ugly. The frustrating
thing is that I can't find menu items to change this, and
I have no idea how this come about :(.

If you know what I should do to get transparent icon
background back, please advice.

Thank you.
