Re: Major Panic

2000-10-07 Thread Thomas Fernandez

Hallo Thomas,

On Sat, 7 Oct 2000 10:04:23 +0800 GMT (07/10/2000, 10:04 +0800 GMT),
I wrote:

JS>> I'll also point out that the above generalisation does not always

Which is:

"A system resource is anything that is needed by a process for its
computation to progress; in addition, the resource might be changed as
the computation proceeds. Examples of physical resources include the
processor, I/O devices, and memory. Examples of logical resources
include files, variables, and virtual devices."

Therefore, the file (bank account in your example) is a resource, the
record (account balance) is not.

JS>> As is "operating system".

TF> Again I was taught something different.

This is what the book says:

"1.2 What is an Operating System?

[...] An operating system, broadly defined, manages a computer system's
hardware, the application program, the data and any communication with
the user or the outside world, all in accordance with the policies
chosen by the operating system's designer. In other words, an operating
system controls the resources of a computer system and the
communications between elements of the computing system. [...]"

I will not write down the whole section 1.2, but you do get an idea
what the job of an operating system is, as opposed to an application
program like TB. Each member of the MS-Windows family is an operating
system, so are the unix variants. A kernel is part of an operating
system, but some computer systems might have only a kernel, which will
function as a "light-weight" OS.

No way will an application be allowed to fiddle around on the
harddisk. It will call a service of the OS, called an interrupt, and
ask the OS to handle disk I/O (reading/writing). Same with the memory
management: an app will request memory space from the memory manager
(part of the OS), and that one will decide what to do: swap, assign,
fragment, whatever, or say "no free memory available". As you pointed
out correctly, the error message from the OS to TB must be handled in
such a way that TB will report this error; right now it seems TB is
surprised, violates access (i.e. attempts to write to a sector of the
memory that is assigned otherwise), or simply loses the data. This, I
agree, must be dealt with, and this is a job for our two developers.
;-)

I think we should continue any discussions about OS's and resources on
TBOT.

Tony included a ShockWave flash graphic in the page header. It works

there was a problem with your installation of SWF and a reinstall

Try VMware under Linux (http://www.vmware.com) - you'll need Windows
install CD (9x , NT or 2000), but Wine also emulates better with
orginal dll files from Windows.

Hi Marck,

Yes, I've tried a new install of the Flash Player, both off of my Win 98
SE CD, and off of the Macromedia site itself. Even the Macromedia example
on their site crashes, but at least now all that crashes is IE. Last
night, my whole computer crashed. I have the page printed out now, so it's
best now just to avoid the page.

It might have something specifically to do with my computer... Video card,
etc.

I had problems downloading the nsproto.exe file but found one

Frankly, items steps 3 to 7 make no sense until you actually execute
the file at which time the directions in the program setup will
clarify those steps.

Good luck.

Go to: Options-> Editor Preferences-> Select the "Display" tab.
From this window you can change the font, for another fixed width
Font. Hit "Change" button (top right), and select your preferences.

The Bat! uses a plain text editor with unusual but powerful features
which unfortunately restricts us to using a monospaced or fixed-width
font. The majority of fonts in windows are variable-width fonts and
are therefore not included in TB!'s font list.

3 quickies

2000-10-07 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello BatListers,

 1. Is it possible to attach an address to a folder when
"create new msg" is selected? For example, I have a folder
that gets all the msgs filtered from this list, If I click on
the "create a new msg" with my cursor on TBUDL folder, the
correct template appears but I still have to enter the
address manually. Not that I'm that lazy, just curious.

 2. What do TB! mavens suggest is the best format to use when
importing an address book from Outlook Express. I see
specific formats set out for Pegasus & Eurdora but not
Outlook Express which is probably the most widely used
emailer [ at least in the U.S. ]

 3. Am I the only person who finds TB! address book a little
squirrely? For example, when searching for a name it doesn't
seem to include the separate sub-folders in the search. Is
there a setting that I've missed perhaps?

 Thanks & regards,

Yes. In the new message template for the folder insert the following:
%To="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Watch out however when hitting mailto: links in messages residing in
this folder. They will be addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well.

A more foolproof method would be to create an address book entry for
TBUDL, define templates for it and include it in your favourites menu by
ticking the favourites column box in the address book. Whenever you wish
to write a new message to the list, select TBUDL from your favourites
menu elicited by either hitting the little arrow on the new message
toolbar button or right clicking on the To: field in the editor window.

Please can you MIME forward this message to me (off-list). I'd be very
interested to see it. To MIME forward the message you first have to
select "Use mime standard for forwarding" under the Account properties
== Templates == Forward. When you have done that forward that message
to me. Don't forget to turn it off when you're done ;-).

Done. (from my other account).

Let me know if you come up with an explanation for this.

I don't know why your message says From: Marck, I guess you hit
"redirect" instead of "reply". Otherwise wrong subjects and wrong
from's may be a problem of your box - ?

I have another explanation too: do you read in thread mode? Almost
every time I reply to a message while in thread mode, two replies with
identical messages bodies are generated, but with differnt To
recipients. I didn't look at the subjects, though.

2000-10-07 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Um, Kitty, I think your template has a slight mistake. Your reply
address is Marck's address. You probably have something like:

%From="%OFromName <%OFromAddr>"

I'm not sure what you intended to do, so I can't suggest any
corrections.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Moving a folder into another?

2000-10-07 Thread Oliver Sturm

Hi there,

I know I can move around folders using the ALT key. But how can I move
a folder into another? Is that possible or do I have to create a new
folder and move the messages over?

Thanks!

Oliver Sturm

Exception EAccessViolation

2000-10-07 Thread Jerry S.

Howdy ,

I recently upgraded from 1.44 to 1.46d. No the first time I launch
TheBat, I get the following error:

Application Error
Exception Exception EAccessViolation in module thebat.exe at 0006653C.
Access violation at address 00467780. Write of address 006BE984.
[OK]

The initial graphics never actually appears on the screeen, just the
squarea outline. Clicking the OK results in the error reappering.
The only thing I can do is:
CTRL-ALT-DEL, Task Manager, Select TheBat and End Task. Attempting to
open or work with any other apps while this error is on the screen
results in more of the same error messages appearing. The error HAS
to be cleared before anything else can be done.

I can now launch TheBat without error. This only happens the first
time that I attempt to launch TheBat after the computer is booted.
After clearing the initial error via End Task, I can open and close
and use TheBat without further error.

I am running:
WinNT4 Workstation
ServicePack 6a installed
Dual PIII 450, 512MB RAM
Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro video
Registered version of TheBat.

Any ideas on what is causing this? I have searched all of the
Archives without success.

Ciao for now,
